Since 1970 humans have wiped out fifty percent of the world's wildlife.

Walter J. Palmer showing off his machismo.
Courtesy of Vox:

In early July, a dentist from Minnesota named Walter James Palmer traveled to Zimbabwe, lured a male lion out of Hwange National Park, and shot him to death. The twist? This was no ordinary lion. No, Cecil the lion was a popular tourist attraction, and so now half the internet has erupted in outrage over his death.

It's a grisly tale. But it's also not an isolated case. Not even close. Over the past four decades, humans have managed to kill off a staggering number of wild animals worldwide — from charismatic lions and rhinos right down to lowly frogs. Most of these deaths don't spark anywhere near the furor that Cecil's did. But they certainly add up.

A major recent survey by the World Wildlife Fund estimated that the number of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish worldwide has declined a whopping 52 percent between 1970 and 2010. The main culprits? Humans. Mainly through hunting, fishing, deforestation, pollution, and other forms of habitat destruction. Statistically speaking, Cecil's death at the hands of a person was more likely than not.

When people refer to human beings as a cancer on this planet they could not be more accurate.

And the thing is that we know better, and yet we still cannot accept the responsibility of caring for the creatures whose lives are put into jeopardy by our very existence, much less by our need to demonstrate dominance over them.

I have to say that in this area my daughter is my moral superior, as she is a strict vegetarian who contributes time and money to conservation projects. Especially towards the protection of elephants who hold a special place in her heart.

We all have to do much, much better or else someday children will be learning about lions the same way that we all learned about the Dodo bird.

P.S. Speaking of big brave hunters killing animals the Zimbabwe officials are calling for the extradition of  Palmer to face charges for killing Cecil.

There were 13 ppl injured after shooting erupted at a party in Brooklyn. That's in New York. When are you going to write about that? Next week?

The great thing about google is that it is free to set up your own blog so you can write about whatever you like. Then you can write about the shooting and we can all decide whether or not to read it. This will save you from trolling other blogs and expecting those blog owners to cover your choice of topics. Such a great deal and a win/win. You get to focus on your interests and we don't have to deal with your inanity here on IM.

Here's all there is to know. Stop harassing Gryphen with your bullshit sniping.

Thirteen people were injured when gunmen opened fired outside a house party in New York City’s Brooklyn borough on Sunday, police said.

Nine people were struck by gunfire and four others suffered cuts and scrapes in the early morning shooting, according to the New York Police Department. Two victims were shot in the neck and the rest were hit in the arms or legs.

All of the gunshot victims, which included both men and women ranging in age from 19 to 38-years-old, were transported to local hospitals and are expected to survive, the NYPD said.

Police have not captured any of the suspects and it was not immediately clear what prompted the shooting.

Carefully read the article and Gryphen's commentary. Humans are a virus, a cancer on this planet. 13 less of us, regardless of the cause, is a small step towards solving the bigger problem of overpopulation and our decimation or resources and other species.

Barmaid: Lion killing dentist Walter Palmer shared photo and bragged about killing Cecil

Walter Palmer, the Minnesota dentist who became a worldwide pariah after killing Zimbabwe’s “Cecil the lion,” reportedly showed pictures of the dead animal and boasted about killing him to a barmaid he was trying to dazzle, the Mirror is reporting.

According to the Doolittle’s Woodfire Grill employee who identified herself as Danielle, the 55-year-old married dentist showed her pictures of the dead lion on his phone while claiming he had broken records with the kill.

‘I was just like, ‘Oh’ when he showed it to me – I pretended I was interested but I really wasn’t” Danielle explained before pointing out “He told me he had broken some kind of record for the biggest lion but I wasn’t really that interested – he’s old enough to be my dad.”

New lion poaching charge against 2nd American

Wildlife authorities in Zimbabwe on Sunday alleged that a second American killed a lion in an illegal hunt several months ago.

In a statement, officials said that a second person, Headman Sibanda, had been arrested in relation to a lion killing in April, and not the killing of Cecil the lion. They said Sibanda was taken into custody "for breaching hunting regulations in that he hunted without a quota and permit at his Railway Farm 31 and is also the owner of Nyala Safaris which conducted the hunt."

The Zimbabwe government said Sibanda has been helping police with their investigation, and they named Jan Casmir Sieski of Murrysville, Pa., as a suspect in the illegal lion hunt in April.

Isn't there a new TV series out called "ZOO" that reflects animals taking over the planet and putting 'people' in their places as to their being the ones hunted and overtaken?

It certainly fits in perfectly with our current news coverage of wealthy American hunters killing big game (only for trophies) throughout the world!

More people, less environment for our wildlife. And when you really think about it it isn’t just mammals but fish life, plankton, insects and reptiles. We humans usually just focus on mammals.

It is about damn time we started making stricter laws and enforcing them in trying to save these beautiful animals. People like Ted Nugent should be continuously shamed as well. What an insufferablle asshole. He is a pervert and indeed a cancer on the world. The sooner the likes of him and Walter Palmer are gone, the better. Ted Cruz is another punk ass bitch that kills these lovely animals. He is not only one of the ugliest men I have ever seen, he is also one of the biggest egomaniacs, along with Trump the Chump, his revolting sons and Sarah the ingnoramous. Society suffers because of them in so many ways and the animal populations suffers terribly because of them. Kerry Krottinger and his nasty wife, both nasty people, have a house full of stuffed endangered species. Why is it these rich assholes have to kill these magnificent creatures? They are desicable cretins and I wish they would be sent to Mars or the moon, nothing to kill there but one another.

Animal expert Jack Hanna calls for jail time for killer of Cecil the lion: ‘Something has to happen here’

Beloved animal expert Jack Hanna, emeritus director of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, called for the Walter Palmer to be punished for killing Cecil the Lion in Zimbabwe, and noted that Americans had been jailed for less severe poaching crimes.

During an interview on ABC’s This Week, Hanna explained that the world’s lion population was declining rapidly.

“In 1947 when I was born, there were about 450,000 lions, the mid-70s when my kids were born, there were about 100,000,” he told ABC’s Jonathan Karl. “Today, there are less than 30,000.”

Even though Hanna said that he was not there when the Minnesota dentist killed Cecil, he argued that there were four important facts that made the case particularly egregious.

He noted that the lion had been “habituated” by the researchers who had been studying him over the past 15 years: “It’s like a cow sitting in a field.”

“Number two, you drag a carcass over from the protected side of [Hwange National Park] over to the hunting side — and that was proven that they drug the carcass for the animal to be drug over to that area where he could be hunted by bow an arrow,” he continued. “Someone said the man might not have seen the collar on the lion. Well if that was a rifle, maybe that’s true — but I was there when they were collaring the lions, by the way — so therefore, you could see that collar if it was a bow and arrow.”

“Some people said they didn’t have the right permits, well that could be or not be. So, there’s so much stacked against him plus one illegal thing he had already done.”

In his gruesome death, Cecil has brought forth to the world
the destruction in every way, of innocent animals throughout
the world. How many animals are left in hot cars, some dumped by the side of a road to fend for themselves..
Dog and cock fighting. I could go on and on. Cecil
died a hero! He stands as the symbol for much harder laws
on the books , long prison sentences , the stoppage of
trophy hunting and life in prison for poaching and more.
There will be illustrated books now written about Cecil
for children that will teach the next generation
compassion ,and that they are the caretakers of all animals.
My great grandchildren are part of the next generation that
are being taught , for now, by example!

Omg. Ridiculous. No one should face charges for hunting lions. That is saying lions are superior to deer , elk, caribou and moose. Among others.
While some may not see a difference between a person taking a dogs head and bashing it to the ground, and shooting animals, one is societally acceptable.

So until hunting in general is outlawed and there are no longer culture where people kill lions to claim manhood, bug off and leave this dentist alone.

You are ignorant and understand nothing about African wildlife.

This hunt was not legal. There were no permits issued to hunt in the park as well as the private property where he slaughtered Cecil.

The Poacher, Big Bwana dentist has a long record of either hunting illegally or slaughtering endangered species, white rhino in South Africa, leopards, protected cape buffaloes, in fact he prides himself for killing endangered species. That is not a hunter or sportsman, that is a sadist.

I have read the transcript of the guide and the whole story sounds fishy. " They weren't suppose to be hunting there, but the dentist's luggage got lost, so they were late starting-why not wait til the next day.

When they found the collar, they hid it in a tree until the guide could talk to his lawyer.

Then Big Bwana wasn't satisfied with just slaughtering a lion knowing it was illegal because they lured him from the park and he was collared.

Did he have remorse and call the authorities, NO he wanted to continue by butchering an elephant, they guide seemed surprised, so who had the permit.

At this time there are only 30,000 lions left in the world. Not only did he butcher Cecil, but Cecil's offspring, which are the future generations are endangered.

I have been on safari in Kenya and Tanzania, the animals are not just sitting around like in the zoo waiting to have their photos taken, you have to find them in a vast area.

The dentist knew exactly what he was doing and could care less if it was illegal. He got off easy when he poached the bear with a fine and probation. Obviously he is a slow learner, so this time they should throw the book at him and I am elated that the researchers plan just that.

I have to apologize for my comment on a previous thread. The death of Cecil's brother never happened. He was tracked and sighted alive and well with lionesses and Cecil's cubs.
Today's Mellissa Harris Perry had an interesting take from a professor at NYU. We're not only wiping out protected species by these "poaching" incidents, we're raping Africa's land of heavy metals, precious metals and gems using poor African populations as cheap labor. These commodities are used in cell phones, televisions, the computer or tablet we're typing on, the auto industry, communications industries, pigments and solvents for artists, etc etc etc.
The White House Petition has more than enough signatures calling for extradition of this "Dentist" who "Didn't know the lion was Cecil and was being tracked by collar by the scientists studying wildlife,,,,," When he cut the head off and skinned him, did he happen to notice something around this lion's neck?? And why did he wait to get caught and not turn himself in????
Everyone involved, including the taxidermist, need to face extradition. Too bad the conditions in Zimbabwe's prisons are deplorable. The people whom he paid to "tour" are going there, and if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for the Dentist. I know I'll get flamed for saying that, and I really don't care. If a dentist is smart enough to find the right guides, he's smart enough to research penalties BEFORE he breaks laws.

I know somebody who claims to be a vegetarian but eats a lot of fish, clams etc. Frankly I don't get it, since plants are just as alive as animals, they just are not freely mobile. Killing a lion or any animal for sport is a whole different story. I'd go out and buy a crossbow or gun myself is I could hunt down this pos dentist. But would that make me any different from Eric Rudolph, etc? Probably not, but I'd still like a shot at the sob.
