House Republicans vote to defund Planned Parenthood. Government shutdown in 3..2..1

Courtesy of MSNBC:

The Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed on Friday the Defund Planned Parenthood Act, 248-177. The bill strips the women’s health provider of its funding for contraception, pap smears, and testing for sexually-transmitted infections, unless it stops performing abortions.

President Barack Obama has vowed to veto the bill, setting the stage for a possible government shutdown. Some congressional Republicans have vowed not to vote for any budget that includes funding for the organization.

“Planned Parenthood can get their money back if they fully commit to what they talk about, women’s healthcare, and stop performing abortions for this year,” said Rep. Diane Black. Her fellow Republican of Tennessee, Rep. Marsha Blackburn, also a vocal supporter of the bill, declared, “If there is reason to investigate, there is reason to withhold taxpayer funding during that time.”

Well actually there is no reason to investigate, as evidenced by the five investigations in five different states which found nothing wrong.

According to The Hill the vote went down mostly along party lines:

In a 241-187 vote, nearly all Republicans and two Democrats approved legislation that would block Planned Parenthood's federal funding for one year, giving time for Congress to fully investigate claims of wrongdoing by the provider.

Lawmakers also passed a bill tightening restrictions on abortion doctors who violate infant protections in a 248-177 vote.

“What we’ve learned about Planned Parenthood is appalling, barbaric and indefensible,” Rep. Keith Rothfus (R-Pa.) said.

What "we've learned" is that conservatives are easily manipulated by doctored video and hyperbolic posting on Facebook.

Of course this was the plan all long when that group, Center for Medical Progress, and their conservative backers, created those doctored videos in the first place.

They know full well they are dealing with a bunch of barely literate mouth breathers who will follow the shiny object every time. And so they have.

Give me a break! How many times have they attempted to repeal the ACA, how often have they threatened, and succeeded, at shutting down the govt. like that's the equivalent of closing a street in protest of something. IT IS THE US GOVT that these asshats have sworn to uphold. God I despise these small minded mouth breathers spearheaded by Cruz, Gohmert, etal.

The shutdown should hit just in time to shut down Alaskan crab fishing operations again.

Don't count on it. The two MI legislators (good GOP conservatives, of course) who were just expelled for lying, having an affair, asking their staffs to lie for them, and misusing state funds are BOTH going to run to get their seats back. Lord, this country is insane.

Who the friggin' Hell cares, 12:01 PM? We are seeing less and less in print about the Palins and it's outstanding!

Yeah, big family value news but it will remain secret. Poor J Loewe. She wanted to marry. Did she get knocked up and they had to take care of it? She first came off as someone that would not be pushed around and let the Palins take her freedom. Now she is just another loser. I wonder who is next?

It won't be Marina Lupas. She is in with Sarah Palin. The Alaskan Dermatology office is tight, they are loyal as Sarah likes it.

    3. Where are the photos of Bristol's big belly? She was so proud to be pregnant again out of wedlock with a different baby daddy? Where are the pics?

      Let her PROVE she's pregnant.

  5. The latest meme is that there are plenty of clinics, we don't actually need PP. Jeb! cited that at the Wed. debate when he said there were 13,000 clinics providing women's health care (in the US). I used my calculator, that's an average of 260 per state and not counting territories or DC.

Might sound like a lot, but just exactly how 'clinic' was defined in this statistic is completely unknown, and I'm betting a lot of those are pay-full-freight clinics (which poor people could never access) and I'm sure the geographical distribution of those clinics puts most of them in large population centers - meaning that if PP goes, so goes any local access for those in rural areas.

Does anyone know where that statistic came from? Or have any good links to data of this type? I will need to be writing Marco Rubio soon with what will probably be a failed attempt to get him to vote differently, but I'd at least like to make the best factual argument I can why he should not vote for this (it will start with something like "I respect your position on abortion, but defunding Planned Parenthood will not stop that organization from doing abortions since, as you know because of the hyde Amendment, no federal funds go towards abortion ...).

The clinic statistic came out of their lying a$$es like everything else.

Goobernor Bobby Jindull's Louisiana court filing:

      http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2015/09/louisiana-said-women-could-go-dentist-if-planned-parenthood-were-defunded

"The task seems straightforward: Make a list of health care providers that would fill the void if Louisiana succeeded in defunding Planned Parenthood. But the state, which is fighting a court battle to strip the group of hundreds of thousands of dollars in Medicaid funds, is struggling to figure out who would provide poor women with family planning care if not Planned Parenthood.

Nowhere is this struggle more apparent than in a recent declaration by Louisiana's attorneys that there are 2,000 family planning providers ready to accommodate new patients. A federal judge, reviewing the list in an early September court hearing, found hundreds of entries for specialists such as ophthalmologists; nursing homes caregivers; dentists; ear, nose, and throat doctors; and even cosmetic surgeons.

"It strikes me as extremely odd that you have a dermatologist, an audiologist, a dentist who are billing for family planning services," said the judge, John deGravelles, who will determine in the next week whether it is legal for the state to end Planned Parenthood's Medicaid contracts. "But that is what you're representing to the court? You're telling me that they can provide family planning and related services?"

His harsh questioning sent the state back to the drawing board. On Tuesday, the state's attorneys acknowledged that the dentists and other specialists didn't belong on the list. They filed a pared-down version that lists just 29 health care providers."

Some commandment that rebiblicans lying for jeebus is ok...forget the number...

Boehner and his House members waste their time and taxpayer's money with these idiotic votes.

Vote Republicans out of office across the nation, Americans!

The Senate will not pass this and even if they did, President Obama will veto it!

Once again, Republicans are NOT listening to their fellow Americans. Fu--ing assholes, every one of them!

Someone offer to tweak it so that if no wrongdoing is found, PP will get double the funding starting next year.

OT, President Obama is nominating Eric Fanning as the new Secretary of the Army. He is immensely qualified but he will also be the first openly gay person to serve as Secretary of a military branch. His senate hearings should be interesting. Like I said, he is immensely qualified but the fact that the president gets to stick a thumb in the eye of homophobes on the rich is priceless.

Great idea republicans. Because all your attempts to get Obama to fold to your blackmail have been so successful in the past.

You will fail...again. I don't blame your constituents for being so upset with you. You guys haven't accomplished a damn thing.

    Thank God for that!

Wow, they voted to defund PP based on a lie, just like they voted to go to war based on a lie.

Looks like the only time republicans do any work is if it is based on a lie. Note to dems, if you want something passed by the do-nothing party, lie.

I guess people's memories are short. Rethuglicans ALWAYS crank up the faux outrage machine over abortion before big elections. It's the wedge issue they love to exploit with their base...and then later on pass legislation favorable to their big $ donors while no one is paying attention.
