I agree totally.

Yet another reason why I fight so hard to defend the liberal label.

Here is a 67 year old grandmother, who has been a dyed-in-the-wool liberal and proud, all of my life, as far back as I can remember. I wouldn't have it any other way.

I've got four years on you and I've always been proud of my liberal and democratic roots.

Royko was a Chicago treasure, as was his mentor and predecessor, Studs Terkel - who proudly proclaimed his progressive roots - into his mid nineties. They are two of the reasons I don't equate aging as inevitably ascribing to reactionary conservatism.

Mike was a Chicago treasure. When you hired on at the Chicago Daily News, and later the Sun-Times, he took you for a beer at The Goat and told you that he paid your salary, meaning the paper sold because of his column. He gave me the lecture twice. The second time I drank tea.

Does anyone know when Royko wrote this?

Always loved his columns, even though I was a bit too young to fully appreciate them.

It didn't hurt that he was a nice Ukrainian boy! (we had distant cousins also named Royko, although they were, sadly, not related to him)

Thanks Gryphen, for sharing that sentiment by Mr. Royko.
