Courtesy of the Guardian:
Almost a third of Americans could imagine supporting a military coup against their own government, according to a new poll.
The YouGov survey showed 29% of Americans could imagine supporting a coup. Yet, 41% said they could not imagine supporting such an event.
YouGov, which conducts internet polls about “politics, public affairs, products, brands and other topics of general interest”, surveyed 1,000 people online on the issue.
They found that 43% of Republicans would support a military coup in certain instances, while only 20% of Democrats and 29% of independents would.
The overall numbers increased when participants were “asked whether they would hypothetically support the military stepping in to take control from a civilian government which is beginning to violate the constitution”. 43% said yes to this, and 29% said no.
Well that's comforting.
And yet where were these people when the Bush administration lied us into an illegal war, started its own propaganda program to hide that fact, and created a program to spy on the American people?
Oh that's right. That was all done by a white guy in the White House.
The idea that these idiots want to overthrow THIS government, which has worked tirelessly to repair the damage left by the last administration, stop the wars, and create millions of new jobs, and not the one that almost bankrupted the country, and was responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans, is proof positive that their motivation has nothing to do with merit and everything to do with skin color.
Just wait until we have a white woman in charge (and not Florina.) The media has so demonized the Clintons that the rightwing will be even worse with Hillary. I wish that Ailes would go back where he came from (the pits of hell?) and take Rush, Beck, and all the rest with him. I wish the media would get some balls and become journalists again. When I watched Huntley and Brinkley and Cronkite as a kid (or even Peter Jennings,) we had had no idea which party they supported. They reported. Period. And the rare times they did 'commentary,' it was posted on the screen, so you knew they were doing an opinion piece. Those were the days. We need them back.
ReplyDeleteWord.
Delete>I wish the media would get some balls and become journalists again.<
DeleteWe can all think of one person who's grateful each and every day that they don't.
The first woman Prez will be Hillary Clinton and I can't wait for the day.
DeleteHillary will drop out before the end of the primaries.
DeleteWorst female candidate ever.
Well, 1000 people doesn't mean much and I'd like to know where the polling took place. Remember that the southern states already tried an armed overthrow of the government. Otherwise I think the poll simply shows that 21st century Democrats believe more in the democratic process and are, let's face it, less racist that modern Republicans. Military coups never work out very well, do they? But then, today's Republicans are not very thoughtful people; they don't know any history and they're easily swayed by Fox News.
ReplyDeleteBeaglemom
The key to this is: Internet poll. One thousand people online were "polled."
DeleteWhich means, 1000 Repubs were polled.
DeleteRemember? remember in 08. In 08 a pledge was made by the most corrupt and evil part of the Republican party. They pledge to continue their mental fight. A fight carried over from the 40's 50's 60's 70's and today. The lost war. These global clowns have sold America out. They are still alive and voting, but dying daily of hateful old age. MSNBC has allowed it to continue by employing loud mouth, big giant head blow hard to drown out common sense. It is sad that MSNBC sold out. The republican agenda is to infiltrate every city, county, state and federal public area with twisted lies. THEY WASTE OUR TIME, MONEY AND INTELLIGENCE with their dated old smelly politics of their yesteryear hayday. EXPOSE THESE UNAMERICAN HATEFUL DERANGED REPUBLICANS IN EVERY CITY, COUNTY, STATE AND FEDERAL AGENCY. Our government, we the people are not the enemy. The current republican party is.
ReplyDeleteWho are you? I am completely on board with every word you said.
DeleteYour explanation is why I could see a revolution, not a military coup. If the big money people who have "bought" our Congress continue on their way, We, the People, may have to overthrow our Congress. I would, of course, prefer a peaceful transition by overturning "Citizens United", and actually getting to vote for our representatives again. But, I can see the average citizens pushed down to the point, those millions of guns come out of the closet.

I fell in love with an Argentine and went there while the "Dirty War" was raging. Brought to you of course by the riech wing military. I said that would never happen here. Americans are nice. Boy was I wrong. Palin leads the monsters. She's one of the evil ones. LIke I keep saying the "modern" GOP, a gang of murderous thugs.
ReplyDeletePalin leads nobody.
DeleteNo need to be foolish with your exaggerations.
Yes use our military to round up the NRA members who support mental patients owing guns. Yes use our military to pay a visit to unauthorized militias and fruit cakes claiming any form of take over. It is time to officially expose the wacko's within the entire republican party of confirmed losers, liars and common crooks. Get to work everyone. Look for areas within your communities for redistricting, for bridge gates, for voter tampering. ask questions, expose the corruption and Trojan style campaign strategy. EXPOSE THE REPUBLICANS FOR WHAT THEY ARE.
ReplyDeleteLol. You are a moron, but funny.
DeleteGood luck.
Just fishing for a big um moron 10.25 and bingo.....got lucky. #$%^%$%$ relax.
DeleteI'm trying to think of a military coup that led to MORE democracy.
ReplyDeleteHmm...
You're correct, but sadly, the folks who would vote for a military coup are not interested in democracy.
DeleteNot entirely on topic, but about skin colour:

Why in hell would someone ask a question like that in a poll? I'm so sick of polls. Why are there so many of them and what use are they? Depending on who conducts the poll, the questions are biased one way or the other. Polls should never be reported on by the media since they are basically meaningless. Polls, pledges and political pundits should be banned.
ReplyDeleteBack in '04 I was called by the LA Times asking, if the election were held that day, who I would vote for. I answered "none of the above" and was promptly told that was not an acceptable answer. They were promptly hung up on.
DeleteIt's an "Internet" poll of a small group of people - not very "scientific."
DeleteGryphen linked to the Guardian article which links to YouGov. YouGov explains that the poll was inspired by an article written by a law professor at West Point prior to his being 'forced to hastily resign'.
Delete538 gives YouGov a C+ rating.

As I point out everywhere I go on the Web: There is no group in the U.S. more UNamerican than the TEAvangelicals. (Nor more UNchristian either, but that's a discussion for another day.)
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. The "Tea Party" is a creation of the Koch brothers along with a bunch of seditionist Republicans that has misinformed a segment of truly ignorant Americans into becoming truly anti- just about everything that matters in a democratic society.
DeleteBeaglemom
My Palin lovin' earthquakin' tea party sibling is a high school drop out, who has mooched off of relatives, has filed multiple bankruptcies, multiple marriages and yet is ready to climb on a soapbox and lead the charge! Fucking hilarious!
DeleteChin up, my president, you'll go down as one of the all time greats. I am so going to miss you.....
ReplyDeleteThe closer it gets to the end of his presidency, the sadder I get about him leaving. The time went so fast.
DeleteI don't think his chin has ever been down, except to pray and show respect in moments of silence.
DeleteThe ridiculous part----beside the coup thing (which is probably all of Trump's supporters) is that most of these poor dopes have absolutely no idea what is in the constitution. So--their support of a coup will probably be because they think the constitution says everyone should salute Jesus.
ReplyDeleteThey know as much about the constitution as they do about the Bible. Just enough to spew a few passages when making their point.
DeleteThe deviates who support things such as this have an idea that they'll be engaged in the fight they long for, they'll be shooting and blowing up things and finally they'll be victorious.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't occur to them that people fire back, kill them and their families, and blow up their homes. Also, once the dust has settled and victory declared, someone has to govern.
Wars and revolutions have consequences. And the results are rarely pretty.
Following a military coup, the military governs by setting up a Constitution-loving dictator.
Delete:-p
A military take-over of the government.
ReplyDeleteGee... historically that's always worked out really well, right?
sheesh
You can't get more unconstitutional than a military coup. Do the people who could imagine supporting a coup capable of logical thought?
ReplyDelete"YouGov's latest research shows, however, that officers in the military are held in much greater esteem than their civilian superiors,...."
ReplyDeletehttps://today.yougov.com/news/2015/09/09/could-coup-happen-in-united-states/
This indicates there's an ugly side to giving 'hero' status to our military to foster recruitment efforts.
It just goes to show those who control the message controls the mindset. If you just take the time to pull back the curtain, you will find that the polling data comes from sources that use phone lines or small samples to represent the thought processes of "some Americans". Most importantly, you will always find the rate of error to be high and the poll sample biased.
ReplyDeleteSo, technically, this poll does not reflect the collective thinking of the populous!
Sept. 30, 2013 Rick Joyner of MorningStar Ministries and the New Apostolic Reformation thinks only a military takeover and martial law will save U.S..
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oV_a-L82JT4
When push comes to shove they will take refuge in their backyard 'fraidy-hole' along with their cache of guns, survival kits and bible. The racist southern scum said the same thing during the Civil rights movement and except for an odd murder and lynching here or there, Jim Crow got dragged into the twentieth century anyway.
ReplyDeleteOne third of Americans would support the military overthrow of their own government?
ReplyDeleteDang it Gryph, now look what you have done. Sarah Palin just soaked her granny panties like a junior high Palin girl getting fingered for the first time by her cousins.
Sarah Palin is thinking she's the one who could lead these dumbfuck inbred rednecks in overthrowing President Obama.
I don't like Sarah or any of the Palins at all but your comment, 8:09, is just rude and gross. You are no better than a Palin when you write trash like that.
DeleteThank you, 8:58! I agree!
DeleteThanks to the likes of Palin and the tea party inspiring things like this is the reason Sarah Fraud Palin need to go down for all her criminal behavior.
ReplyDeleteCriminal behavior?
DeleteWhat crimes has she committed, and how exactly is Palin, a virtual nobody, with practically zero influence, that no-one cares about, going down?
Troopergate, dairygate, babygate, inciting violence against the president, etc. She still incites hatred against the president every chance she gets and idiots believe her. She still has influence and is still being asked to speak, still being covered by the media. Babygate could take her down or at least humiliate her. Of course narcissists never go away. Besides the fact that she is most likely responsible for the deaths of Menard and Miller. I think murder is a crime still.
DeleteYeah, so.... the 'crimes' she committed is murder (?) according to you? That is a pretty heavy accusation? Got any proof bucko, or are you just gonna insinuate a charge of murder with nothing?
DeleteShe never incited any violence to the President- you claiming that, is not the same as reality.
All the other 'gates' you are talking about either were resolved while she was governor or shortly thereafter. Done deals.
And babygate, it isn't happening.
If people decide they want to hear her speak, and she is willing to speak, well then why shouldn't she? Because you? You are a nobody. She is in the free and clear to do as she likes, and you nor anybody else on these boards is gonna stop her.
Merica.
A Palin fan on IM, how unoriginal.
Delete8:14 calling an IMer out on their stupidity or complete lack of reason combined with dumb conspiracy- does not make one a Palin fan.
DeleteSome of us just have higher brain function and don't have any desire or need to go along with the low flying grey matter that is so common around here.
Cretins ... the whole lot of them. Ship them of to Somalia with their guns. The quality of the gene pool will immediately improve. Good riddance.
ReplyDeletealas, not in Somalia.
DeleteThe other 2/3rds supports removing all the GOPTeaBags from office and put on trial for treason.
