In the exchange, Blair repeatedly says sorry for his conduct and even refers to claims that the invasion was a war 'crime' – while denying he committed one.
Blair is asked bluntly in the CNN interview, to be broadcast today: 'Was the Iraq War a mistake?'
He replies: 'I apologise for the fact that the intelligence we received was wrong.
'I also apologise for some of the mistakes in planning and, certainly, our mistake in our understanding of what would happen once you removed the regime.'
Challenged that the Iraq War was 'the principal cause' of the rise of Islamic State, he said: 'I think there are elements of truth in that.
'Of course you can't say those of us who removed Saddam in 2003 bear no responsibility for the situation in 2015.'
In the 'trial by TV', respected US political broadcaster Fareed Zakaria accuses him of being President Bush's 'poodle' over the conflict. Blair's confession comes a week after The Mail on Sunday published a bombshell White House memo revealing for the first time how Blair and Bush agreed a 'deal in blood' a year before the invasion.
Did that really just happen?
This is huge, and if the media in the United States were to take this to its next logical step they could start asking George W. Bush, or perhaps just his brother, if the American people deserve a similar apology as well.
I know that if I were part of a large media company I would want to hear what George W. had to say about this admission from Tony Blair, and if he was unavailable for comment, I would like to hear Jeb! offer his opinion instead.
After all we just watched seven different investigations into the deaths of four Americans in Benghazi, which cost the American people millions of tax dollars, how can we NOT justify taking a another hard long look at the Iraq War in light of these recent revelations?

DeleteSpot on Gryphen, how can we not deserve an answer from Bush and Chaney? Going into Iraq was a crime. I will never forget the day we were told the bombing had begun. And the horrible bragging about “Shock and Awe” against the Iraqi people by the administration. And the two-day war narrative. We need to remember and often.

ReplyDeleteAny 10th grade kid reading an hour of Mideast history could have predicted a TOTAL F*ing disaster for the "war" in Iraq, never mind the titanic fallout that has ensued since.
The intelligence was not only wrong but it was manipulated to lead America into the Iraq War. That this administration did not anticipate the horrors that were unleashed by Sadam's regine was an unconscionable error in their plans to "stabilize" Iraq and of course the oil.

War crimes are tried in the Hague. When will Blair and the bush administration be put on trial? It is not only up to Obama, but the world.
ReplyDeleteTo my knowledge, the US has not signed the documents to be a participant in the International Criminal Court. Perhaps Nefer or another legal reader can interpret what that means to us in terms of jurisdiction.
DeleteWhile it was nice of mr Blair to apologize NOW, it doesn't excuse nor negate his complicity in war crimes. They can blame, massage, lie, twist and cry "flawed intelligence" all they want, it's their actions before, during and since. Gryphen, your last paragraph nails it.
