Former White House Chief of Staff points the finger of blame for the dysfunction in the GOP today right where it belongs. Directly at Sarah Palin.

William M. Daley makes some very salient points in this Washington Post article.

Here are a few of them:You can choose from a litany of insurrections, government shutdowns and other self-inflicted wounds. But this year’s carnival-like GOP presidential primary makes one event, in retrospect, stand out as a crucial turning point on the road to upheaval: the 2008 embrace of then-Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be a heartbeat from the presidency.

Palin’s blatant lack of competence and preparedness needs no belaboring. What’s critical is that substantive, serious Republican leaders either wouldn’t or couldn’t declare, before or after the election: “This is not what our party stands for. We can and must do better.”

Daley goes on to point out that by the end of the 2008 campaign many in the Republican party were relegated to defending  one of the dumbest people on the planet from criticism or from further media scrutiny.

After the election Palin actually ramped up the damage she had been doing to the Republican party:

Palin became a Fox News fixture, reinforcing the newly formed tea party’s “never compromise” demands. Bombast, not reason, reigned. Now the “settle for flash” aura of Palin’s candidacy looks like a warning that the party was prizing glib, red-meat rhetoric over reasoned solutions.

Palin, who back in those days still had great influence, helped to elect morons like Ted Cruz, and pave the way for disastrously unqualified folks such Christine O'Donnell and Todd Aikin.

Now those folks did not get elected but others such as Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, and Louie Gohmert did.

Now that tiger is devouring the GOP establishment. Party elders had hoped new presidential debate rules would give them greater control. But they are watching helplessly as Trump leads the pack and House Republicans engage in fratricide.

This is how Daley wraps up the article:

This isn’t to heap new scorn on Palin. But let’s not diminish the recklessness of those who championed her vice presidential candidacy. It was well known that McCain, 72 at the time of his nomination, had undergone surgery for skin cancer. It wasn’t preposterous to think Palin could become president.

Now Republicans ask Americans to give them full control of the government, adding the presidency to their House and Senate majorities. This comes as Trump and Carson consistently top the GOP polls. Republican leaders brought this on themselves. Trump calls Palin “a special person” he’d like in his Cabinet. That seems only fair, because he’s thriving in the same cynical value system that puts opportunistic soundbites above seriousness, preparedness and intellectual heft.

Amen to that.

I have to say that I probably received more links to this article than I have any other article in quite some time.

Part of the reason for that is likely because this Daley guy is singing my song.

I have been saying some version of this for coming up on seven years now.

I still remember that day after Palin resigned and my fellow Alaska bloggers were celebrating the possibility of never having to write about her again.

But not me. Somehow I knew that not only had we not heard the last of that lunatic, but that the REAL lunacy still lay ahead of us.

That may have been a moment of clairvoyance on my part, but even I could not have imagined just how much damage Palin would do to the GOP before people stopped listening to her.

In the old days I used Palin as a barometer to measure just how crazy the party was becoming, but these days even SHE is not batshit crazy enough to measure just how far the party has drifted into the weeds.

In 2009 one of the first books ever written about Palin was entitled  "Trailblazer." And as it turns out that title was prescient.

However the trail that Palin blazed was toward the destruction of the very party that rescued her from the near anonymity of Alaska and made her a household name.

And as we see that name is now not only synonymous with ignorance and stupidity, it is also linked forever to the dumbing down and disintegration of the Grand Old Party.

They refused to take responsibility for her then - wonder how long and how many will continue to beat the drum for her. The Repubs bought this one - they will go down with her.

They LOVED her back then. She galvanized the dumbass vote and legitimized "low-information opinionating". This is why we have geniuses like Bristol who believes she can outsmart science if she just squints real hard while she "thinks".

This is why we have epic dumbasses in government who think that a handful of snow debunks science because "common sense".

Palin was used by the GOP as "validation" for that "don't need no fancy book learnin'" dumbassery because it resonated with the Tea Party and evangelicals. And now they're paying the price. 2016 is NOT going to go well for the GOP.

The Hee-Haw-ification of our government is about to get shut down.

    6. The minute she walked on that stage with McCain for the first time, and opened her screech mouth, I thought -- mean girl from high school, popular because of her fuck-me heels and ass, brainless, got through school by prick-teasing the nerds who did her homework....

I was never fooled by her and wrote Andrew Sullivan (The Daily Dish) several times begging him not underestimate her dog-whistle "patriotic" call to the arrogantly & willfully ignorant, red-neck Americans who now -- in her -- had a public and vocal champion of their bigotry, fear of The Other and revenge mentality for being put down for the un-evolved, uneducated class they are.

Andrew is a Brit, a reasonable man, who wrote that the Americans would see through her and dismiss her quickly enough. (In all fairness, he did tackle her fake pregnancy when the rest of the journalists wouldn't touch it.)

Thank you, Gryph, for exposing her crap all these (disheartening) years. And, it's not over yet.

Until the GOP admits their mistake... but I fear it's too late -- the fringe Tea Party mentality is running circles around the comparably cooler heads of the party who are afraid to protest in any substantial way because they are short-sighted, greedy, Kock-owned politicians not statesmen. And I hope they don't -- more votes for Democrats that way.

This was probably NOT written by a Palin offspring! I'm suggesting someone else did it playing the part! Even her kids know their mother is retarded and never was qualified for the positions she was elected!

Remember - when she was elected Mayor of small-town Wasilla, Alaska that she hired someone that actually did all of the work.

Remember - she quit as gov of Alaska mid-way through her term.

Remember - the Alaska Legislature found her to be unethical.

Remember - when running for VP (second slot) with McCain - she was proven to be an idiot and not qualified for the position. McCain subsequently lost to our outstanding President Obama and a lot of the losing factor was due to Sarah Palin!

Remember - she is now irrelevant to Alaskans and holds little favorable ratings in their state!

Remember - the Alaska Republican party has nothing to do with her any longer.

Remember - the National Republican Party does not include her in anything at all and didn't when Mitt Romney ran (and lost, thank God!) for POTUS.

Remember - John McCain has nothing to do with her or her family members and hasn't for years!

The GOP and their clown car candidates have alienated women, blacks, Latinos, Asians, LGBT, Millennials - their only demographic that they are grappling for is the over 50, white, evangelicals. How's that workin' out for ya, GOP?

Actually, it started when a young Rush Limbaugh decided to embark on a career in talk radio. Everything that is wrong with the GOP today can be traced to Limbaugh's ascent and the dawn of the "dittoheads." Many other hate merchants followed, carrying water for the wealthy by whipping their unthinking minions into a froth of rage on a regular basis. This is where the culture was born, and where it has festered ever since.

Drug addict Limbaugh set the tone. The hypocrisy like saying "drug dealers should be killed" when he was sending his maid out to buy drugs for him.

Palin made it popular, you know, gave it style. Put the lipstick on the pig. And then gave the pig "star quality."

Plenty others bear blame-Rove, Alies, Murdoch Cruz, Coulter et al.

"This isn’t to heap new scorn on Palin. But let’s not diminish the recklessness of those who championed her vice presidential candidacy."

Sarah's fault was her own vanity, thinking that she could bluff her way through governing in any office. Her term as mayor was so "successful" that she had to hire a city manager, and she managed to leave Wasilla millions of dollars in debt. As governor, other people did the work and Sarah took the credit. Proof of how much Sarah really liked being governor-- she quit.

The people who are to blame are those who chose Sarah to be McCain's running mate. Shame on McCain for wanting to win so badly that he was willing to risk the future of the US on a pretty choice that might get him a few votes, wink wink. He and his staff knew that Sarah was totally unprepared for any high office, yet they were willing to use her in order to win.

Shame on Fox, Breitbart, all of the right wing conservative media who championed Sarah as the voice of the Tea Party and let her speak, unfiltered and unchallenged. It was only when Sarah went so completely off the rails that they realized that Sarah was more liability than asset. There is plenty of blame to go around.

    Hear Hear!!!

That's the simple truth, all that G. said. Yes, IM and IM'ers were on to this scamming Palin and those who supported her. We were the canaries in the mine, sucking in the vapors of Sarah, and coughing and choking on her scam, and no one would pay attention. Her supporters were rallying around a dictator, because they liked the idea of a dictator. Whatever the people want, they'll get.

The established GOP, the 'old boys club' didn't even come to their own defense. They knew they were elitist, but instead of handling the rebellious rogue wave of Palinism and nipping it in the bud, they cleverly said little, waiting to see where it might take them, and they thought Palinism would keep them in power. They thought they could get in bed with the lunatic Tea Party un-cinged. Now they're covered with ashes.

Now, the GOP are left holding a bag with nothing but Trump and Carson and a few other loons in it. Isn't it sad to hear Lindsay Graham whining about how he's the poor kid who never attacked anyone in the school yard and the big bullies are boss of him?

Uh speaking of mental health…ya all don’t know do you…yikes…ok…well to get some “solid evidence” to “legal reasoning” to that HUGE trust fund…at age 11 someone had to go to “Con-Air” in Los Anchorage in 1977…it housed the worst of the worst…a serial killer named Aleutian Al and from what I understand that kid had to listen to his crap at every meal…being as they all ate in the cafeteria…long story short…a serial killer got bitch beat by the kid and almost died…lol…oops…then on top of those daily meals of cannibalism…the poor kid had to keep a male aide from raping the boys on graveyard shift…fast forward 18 months later then when the limits of Medicaid – major fraud considering the “mother” owned 16 downtown blocks of Los Anchorage…and Heather has a gas station on one of em!
So then the poor kid gets sent to the Valley…and a brand new lake house gets built…hu? then it’s the kid’s fault a doctors kid gets into mischief…it’s all a part of the plan…so the kid leaves the state in 1982…money pours!
so then it back fires when the kid returns to Alaska in 1998…after that 1996 murder-suicide in Omak that started with cocaine to underage teens that turns into Todd’s KKK staging the events of it to “spook” the kid hu?
Gosh I could go on and on and on…but when the kid got Frank to reverse the Statues of Limitations in 2003 – then the Alaska Natives came forward!
Damn that Kid! HAHA…wanna know something else…when the Kid gets the legal matters settled…just like BIRTHRIGHT OWNER…the Natives will get the land and the oil and the trust fund taken from the legal owner…man I hate it when that happens…smirk! May be the kid should write a book!!!

PS that is the one that palin resigned over…the kid sent a note to “—” and it got to Sarah…and that non-stop domestic-terrorism since 1977…

Not sure what you mean by "but when the kid got Frank to reverse the Statues of Limitations in 2003 – then the Alaska Natives came forward!" But legally, that doesn't make sense. One does not "reverse" the statute of limitations as to any particular crime or civil cause of action. Typically, they are statutory, as in there is a statute that lays them out. That statute may be amended, but it will never be "reversed."

      Delete
    12. Anonymous2:42 PM

      BTW, it's "Statutes" not "Statues."

      Delete
    13. Anonymous2:49 PM

Having said that (about the law and statute of limitations), I did look and found that there was a law that Frank Murkowski, the governor of Alaska, signed into law, SB 93, in 2003 that changed the statute of limitations "on actions to quiet title to, eject a person from, or recover real property or the possession of it; and providing for an effective date," "giving private property owner's security in knowing their property can not be taken by squatters." It essentially did away with adverse possession. I cold see that would have some impact on Native Alaskans. Not sure how it would impact SP, however. http://www.akrepublicans.org/pastlegs/23rdleg/passedleg.php

    14. Anonymous2:55 PM

Just fact-checking the above, in case these tidbits are actually related to something involving SP. Apparently, there was a murder-suicide in Omak in 1996. It was apparently a dispute over property lines. Not much at the link, but see the comments. https://mylifeofcrime.wordpress.com/2015/04/19/murder-suicide-paul-crawford-killed-the-schloegl-family-and-then-himself-in-a-dispute-over-property-lines/

What continues to give me pause is knowing 1) what total sh*thead predators both Sarah and Todd are, and 2) that predatory types are known to choose their victims carefully.
Anyone who has read Shailey Tripp's book (as I have) will likely come away with the sense of her as a warm-hearted but extremely vulnerable person, probably not the ideal witness in any court of law. Who better to strong-arm into a prostitution racket, dangling promises of a big-money payout that never arrives?
I work in a male-dominated field, where old-fashioned sexual harassment went the way of the passenger pigeon years ago. But I've seen, more than once, how men in positions of power end up having flings with particularly needy, vulnerable women. If/when it comes down to he-said-she-said, who's going to believe what she said?
So, yeah, as much as The Kid rambles, a part of me has to wonder, is there some ugly germ of truth underneath it all? I really don't know.

      Delete
    17. Anonymous6:37 PM

But The Kid is not vulnerable, needy or any other such thing. Above, the poster says, "a serial killer got bitch beat by the kid and almost died…lol…oops…then on top of those daily meals of cannibalism…the poor kid had to keep a male aide from raping the boys on graveyard shift…"

Sarah has gotten to where she is because of her looks. Let's not mince words here: she's been given a pass by the media because she's a good looking woman - in the beginning. However, when it became clear that Palin was an intellectual light-weight, with absolutely no substantive critical thinking skills, then and only then did questions get asked about her credentials for high public office. Why do you think she went the reality TV route? She knows, deep down, that's she's not intelligent enough to withstand real vetting.
Listen: try for one minute to visualize Sarah Palin being grilled relentlessly for 11 hours under hostile cross examination. Can you? Can you really see it? That's the difference between a phony (Palin) and a real bonafide intelligent, skilled, knowledgeable individual (Clinton).

Many have been vindicated in some sort of way, from Daley's insight, but it's way too late. Writing about this now does no good. The country's been so riled up with hatred, conceit, mockery and divisiveness and Sarah Palin had everything to do with it.

She was the popular girl du jour, who dragged her screaming adoring fans into a cesspool of hate. She loved it, not for the politics, but for the popularity and her egotistical mind.

The next revelation of truth about Palin must come from John McCain himself. He needs to address her. He needs to admit he made a yuuuuge mistake and should apologize to the GOP and his friend Graham. He is partly responsible for the dumbing-down of elected Republican officials, who emulated Palin to get votes.

It's all come down to McCain now. Confession from him (about his mistake in choosing Palin) would be the turning point to a civilized discourse.

I read just today that the people of the United States are tired of stupid. Support for the tea party is at a record low of 17%. That is done from the high of 32% in 2009.

What I know is that Sarah Palin is the most ignorant politician to come down the pike in a long time. And she is proud of knowing nothing. So, I guess the Republicans have gone full circle back to their roots when they were the 'Know Nothing Party'.

We will find out in a year how all this shakes out. As for Sarah, it doesn't look like anyone wants to pay her to campaign for them. Unlike other politicians who have PACs that allow them to travel and not charge the candidate, Sarah does not work for free. Her PAC money is her personal piggy bank and candidates have to pay for her to campaign.

Palin could have been raking in millions by now, could have been the darling of the media.
If she just had one scintilla of humility.
If, after the election, she would have (could have) stepped back and said "whoa! I did not understand just how under prepared for that job I really was! Wow! Hey, forgive me, America - I'm really not that bad of a person, I just got swept up in the moment. I'm really sorry."

She could be working on the View, or maybe even hosting her own talk show on a major network by now, like Kelly Ripa.
She could be a favorite on the late-night talk shows...

But instead, she doubled-down on the viciousness and has become a joke instead of becoming a star.
She traded the adoration of millions for the adulation of a very few.

Yeah, that's what a normal person would have done. She just can't.

She couldn't have been on the View, or hosting her own talk show, because she can't hold up her end of an interesting conversation for 30 seconds. Not now, not in 2008, not ever. Go search for the interview she did with Charlie Rose back in 2007, before she was a household blight^H^H^H^H^H name. She appeared on the show along with Janet Napolitano, who is one smart cookie. Palin did nothing but spout simpleton platitudes in response to every question. It's amusing to watch Rose turn from her back to Napolitano for more intelligent conversation, without managing to actually roll his eyes.

Randall, you hit it on the head! I still think there was more behind all of this than we will ever know!

Well, the problem is that you're hypothesizing the actions and therefore options of a wholly different person than who Palin actually is.

Not only is she truly THAT stupid but she actually is SO ignorant, so ill-informed, and so poorly educated that she could not possibly keep up in the big leagues. I think it's a mistake to assume that the successful people on talk shows get by solely on charm and star power. Often, the good ones are deceptively sharp- and quick thinking, too. And they can string together a grammatically correct sentence.

Plus, you cannot make up for a lifetime of lack of curiosity and serious critical thinking by "boning up on issues" for a year or two. Your deficiencies will soon be apparent because you can fake it for only so long.

Palin had neither the education or talent to go anywhere. That fact that she winked her way to gov. doesn't say much for alaskan voters.

As much as Alaska is the new frontier one would think they would have run this scammer out of town on a rail.

They are still 'shifting money around' in the state coffers...I think they got audited and from what I know that's why the President made a trip to Alaska in August..Yikes! Lets hope 'you know who' had a new house by then...imagine the President walking into that house? Raised eyebrows...Run Sarah Run!!!

  44. Sorry, but I don't lay the entire blame at Palin's feet. She was the means.

It was JOHN MCCAIN and his staff who, 1. suggested her and 2. failed to vet her that foist her on the GOP and the U.S. and the rest of the World. Without them she would have been a no name Governor of Alaska who may or may not have lasted out her first and only term of office. Without them and the VP nomination she would have never had a public platform, never gained the attention of the media and never have provided the fodder for the skin head haters and mouth breathing knuckle draggers.

It is the fault of the GOP for choosing McCain and the fault of McCain and the GOP machine for being careless and irresponsible in allowing an unknown such as Palin to come to the attention of everyone.

And that asshole McCain still hasn't apologized for his massive and damaging error in judgement.

  45. When McCain dies his mistake of picking $arah for his VP will be discussed AGAIN over and over instead of any positive contributions he may have made to our country. And that is what he deserves for never admitting to us this huge mistake.

The blame? Lets not forget the man who bought Palin into national politics.

  48. The comments here about the GOP's Southern Strategy and about operatives like Lee Atwater are spot on. Atwater was one of the early proponents of the dog-whistle phrases which couched racism in innocuous-sounding concerns. Floyd Orr wrote a book about the development and implementing of the Southern Strategy, and Sarah's potential usefulness as a cog in the machine. But that cog wouldn't turn. She was just too willful and too ignorant.

As for Palin helping others get elected, the examples of Gohmert and Cruz don't hold water. Both men had the law degrees and political experience useful for the GOP agenda, before Palin appeared on the national scene. Gohmert was elected to Congress in 2005. He had been a district court judge, and a JAG officer, and is a dyed-in-the-wool Southern Baptist. Cruz was solicitor general in Texas from 2003 to 2008, and had also worked as an advisor at the FTC, worked a stint in the Justice Department, and was an advisor to Dubya's 2000 campaign.

These men owe little to nothing to Sarah Palin. I don't like their politics, but they each have educational and political chops Sarah Palin could never achieve. Whatever successes they've enjoyed, and however questionable their goals, they own them.
