In new ad the NRA finally admits that there is too much gun violence in this country. Blames Obama.

Can you believe that audacity of this son of a bitch?

Here is more from Media Matters:

LaPierre concluded with a false claim: "No organization has been louder, clearer or more consistent on the urgent need to enforce the federal gun laws than the NRA."

The NRA's lie is brazen given widespread reporting explaining how the gun group interferes with ATF operations. As USA Today reported in 2013, "lobbying records and interviews show the [NRA] has worked steadily to weaken existing gun laws and the federal agency charged with enforcing them."

According to The Washington Post, "the gun lobby has consistently outmaneuvered and hemmed in ATF, using political muscle to intimidate lawmakers and erect barriers to tougher gun laws. Over nearly four decades, the NRA has wielded remarkable influence over Congress, persuading lawmakers to curb ATF's budget and mission and to call agency officials to account at oversight hearings."

The NRA's opposition to the ATF has been extreme. The gun group has threatened to attempt to abolish the agency all together and LaPierre infamously called federal law enforcement agents "jack-booted government thugs" who wear "Nazi bucket helmets and black storm trooper uniforms."

This organization depends on their ignorance of their supporters.

They NEED people in this country to be confused by which facts to believe and who to trust.

THAT is why it is absolutely a must to keep calling them out on their bullshit and to publicize as many shootings as we can in the hopes that if the American people see enough that they will finally decide they can stand no more and actually help do something to solve the problem.

That may be a long shot but it is the only shot we have.

Damn, Gryphen, that's how insidious and pervasive gun culture is in this country. Here you are speaking of gun control, only to use GUN SHOOTING metaphors to make that plea/point. Either you are being ignorant to that fact, or you are using it as 'no pun intended', which would be sad. Either way, there must be a way to express that thought without using a shooting metaphor, eh?

I actually took it as a horse racing or betting metaphor - i.e. something is possible but not very likely to happen.

There is a reason that the NRA does not allow guns in their own meetings. I am sorry to say it, but they will not be moved to change their views about background checks and regulating automatic weapons until one of them suffers the same kind of loss that so many others have suffered.

Earlier this month, I joined dozens of my colleagues in the creative community to take a stand against the gun violence that has insidiously become routine in the United States.

We are actors and artists, but we are American citizens first. We have a role to play and a responsibility to do more to prevent these tragedies. We are anxious to do our part to galvanize more Americans and find ways to help in the effort for sensible reforms. Our new Creative Council is part of Everytown and you can see a list of members and read about our organizing principles right here.

We're acting now because, for too long, the gun debate in this country has focused on choosing a side: pro-gun or anti-gun. That is simply a false choice. We respect the Second Amendment but keeping dangerous weapons out of the hands of convicted criminals, terrorists, domestic abusers, stalkers and dangerous people isn't anti-gun; it's pro-common sense.

As a pool player I recognize billiard/pool metaphors everywhere. Surprising considering how few people play. So the idea that gun culture has invaded our language isn't the crying shame you make it out to be. Furthermore "a long shot" might not be the best example of a gun metaphor.

I think the statement made by 7:01 AM is full of caca! It's a perfect sentence made by IM!!!

The NRA organization is about guns and guns shoot and have shot 'people' throughout America in huge numbers during the past recent years.

I detest the leader of the NRA and think he should be replaced. He is the most non inviting, unkind, stick in the mud I've ever viewed when he speaks! He makes the NRA disliked by Americans! Time to move him out NRA members! (And, no I'm not a member even though owning a gun!)

A change is needed - much like the Speaker of the House of the U.S. Congress was made this morning!

Screw LaPierre! His problem isn't because of President Obama - it's due to his poor leadership skills and personality!

  8. i really hate to say it but...this is an extremely effective ad. Gun control advocates do not have this kind of sophisticated propaganda and that is what is needed to way enough people to act. The country did not act after small children were gunned down which is when emotional (propaganized) appeals may have worked to get momentum. Maybe we never will act. it is diheartening to say the least.

I love how this coward keeps flinging poo in the hopes that something sticks. The current laws don't work, it's not for lack of trying either. Whenever they have gun shows in my city, the news covers people with out of state plates openly selling illegal guns out of the trunks of their cars. The cops come, they disperse or if the cops are lucky, they'll nab a few. For some reason, we're getting inundated with straw sales from Virginia. We can't even get stronger background checks passed, and the corpses keep piling up. We need higher taxes on bullets AND guns, if the numbers don't drop, keep raising the taxes.
