Mike Huckabee thinks that it is perfectly reasonable to sell poor people into slavery for stealing. Hey, it's in the Bible.

I'm using this much of my brain to answer these questions.
Courtesy of Think Progress:

The former Arkansas governor weighed in on our nation’s current criminal justice system during an appearance yesterday on Mickelson in the Morning, a leading Iowa radio program.

Host Jan Mickelson began by bemoaning that the “criminal justice system has been taken over by progressives.” In order to fight back, he argued, conservatives should look to the biblical Book of Exodus. “It says, if a person steals, they have to pay it back two-fold, four-fold,”

Mickelson explained. “If they don’t have anything, we’re supposed to take them down and sell them.” Mickelson went on to argue why jails, which he claimed are a “pagan invention,” are inferior to slavery: “We indenture them and they have to spend their time not sitting on their stump in a jail cell, they’re supposed to be working off the debt.”

“Wouldn’t that be a better choice?” the host asked.

“Well, it really would be,” Huckabee replied without missing a beat. “Sometimes the best way to deal with a nonviolent criminal behavior is what you just suggested.”

Okay I have to admit that I thought this might be bullshit, or some kind of exaggeration.

But then I listened to the audio that Think Progress so helpfully embedded on their site, and sure enough this is exactly what Huckabee says.

The Biblical passage which supports the idea of selling poor people into slavery can be found in Exodus 22:

"Whoever steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters it or sells it must pay back five head of cattle for the ox and four sheep for the sheep."If a thief is caught breaking in at night and is struck a fatal blow, the defender is not guilty of bloodshed;but if it happens after sunrise, the defender is guilty of bloodshed. "Anyone who steals must certainly make restitution, but if they have nothing, they must be sold to pay for their theft."

Isn't it great that we have evolved to far as a society that we understand that owning other human beings, even one who has stolen from us, is morally repugnant?

And do we really want to elect a leader who still clings to archaic and primitive methods for dealing with crime?

After all what would be next for Mike Huckabee?

Stoning women for committing adultery?

Or perhaps killing people for working on the Sabbath?

Or perhaps simply forty lashes for the sin of being wicked.

Gee too bad Huckabee is not running for the leader of a fundamentalist Muslim country, it sounds like his way of thinking would make him a shoo in for the job.

I have no problem with prison work programs in theory, except that in practice, the oversight is so bad that they DO amount to slavery.

Rehab centers would be preferable to prisons. Help people kick their demons. What would Huckleberries sons do if they had been forced to face justice for their crimes? One skinned a stray dog, alive, then hanged it from a tree. Huck was governor, so pulled stings and he was ot punished. The other one tried to board a plane with a gun. No punishment, Thanks, Dad. The Huckster is a criminal himself, taking money under false pretenses, he pretends to be a preacher. Holding his thumb and finger like that, indicates the size of either his penis (last time he was able to see it over his belly) or his brain.

"Rehab centers would be preferable to prisons..."

Prison is meant to punish, not rehabilitate. Recidivism rates are pretty high among former prisoners.

Rehabilitation can happen but it depends to the largest extent on the education and mindset of the individual, not the rules of the system.

Well, how about that? Another damned repube who talks about protecting and preserving the Constitution and yet doesn't seem to have a clue about what's in it.

Has this idiot never read the 13th Amendment?

This has already been done by many southern states in the past. Just look up convict leasing where prisoners were rented out to plantations or companies to work for them. The convicts got shit, the state or county got payed.

I wonder what the gun nuts think about that part that says if a thief is caught at night you can kill him but if it's during the day and you kill him you are guilty of murder. The stand your ground nuts can't like that passage.

Well, Huckajeebuz? The Old Testament is quite clear on adultery, and Kim Davis clearly fits the description. If you're quoting from the Old Testament, you must be in the head of the charge to stone Kim Davis to death. Or, it it because she's white? You're awfully selective on what you choose to believe from the Bible.

Dear people: a portion of the 13th amendment abolishing slavery does include an unfortunate exception: AMENDMENT XIII

    Section 1.
Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

    Section 2.
Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

Passed by Congress January 31, 1865. Ratified December 6, 1865.

You're right, 8:18, but the courts at one point seem to have agreed the more important article of the 13th Amendment is the anti-slavery part. It's why the prisons are supposed to pay prisoners for work they do.

Besides, while those two sections may be there, I doubt
very seriously if enough people would support Fuckabee's idea. And if they do? I seriously hope I am dead at that point because the fundies and talibangelicals will have taken over and the USA of the Constitution will have died.

Why does the Huckster claim to be follwer of Jesus Christ yet not follow the teachings of Jesus Christ? Any Christian can tell you that Jesus Christ died for our sins to free us from the tyrannical of the god of the old testament. The books of the old testament that can be found in the Torah and the Koran. They are not the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Sorry, but I must disagree with you. The Quran is NOT part of the Bible. The books of the OT came from the Torah and the Talmud. The Quran was "delivered" to Islam only 1400 years ago, AFTER the Bible was put together as a collection of previous books.

Otherwise, I am in complete agreement. Christians would have been so much more christ-like if they had thrown out the OT at the very beginning. It's like Gandhi said: I like your Jesus. I don't like your Christians.

Personally, however, I can't see having to do with anything from the bible when it comes to a god.

"And god so loved the world...." Oh really? A vicious, murdering, insanely egotistical god who ordered genocide and infanticide and mental torture such as Abraham being ordered to sacrifice his own son? Or caused the entire earth to be drowned, animals and all? Yeah right. Like THAT THING is going to change?

Sure. And Shakespeare was a goose that could write!

    3. Leland8:50 AM

3:47, I'm sorry, but I wasn't talking about jesus per se. I was talking about the vicious, murdering god who supposedly spawned him.

And if the christian church HAD dispensed with the OT, assholes like the huckster wouldn't be able to fall back on it.

BTW, none of what Huck was speaking of comes from the teachings of jesus as supposedly written. It's ALL OT.

"Or perhaps killing people for working on the Sabbath?"

And just WHICH Sabbath would that be? Dr. Ben Carson, being a good Seventh-Day Adventist, celebrates the Sabbath beginning at sundown on Friday until sundown on Saturday. Similar to followers of the Jewish faith. Traditional Christians celebrate the Sabbath on Sundays.

More than one "Sabbath" to consider ...

    Dear Mr. Huckabee:

I have some questions about how I should lead my life according to scripture, and I though you might be able to answer them.

    1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

    2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

    3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

    4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

    5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?

    6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination, Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there 'degrees' of abomination?

    7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle-room here?

    8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

    9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

    10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

"Well, out of 19 kids, y’know, as far as we know, 18 turned out pretty darn well,” a smiling Huckabee said.

“That’s a pretty good percentage,” he continued, “And I don’t think you disparage..” as Harwood cut him off.

“I can just imagine quite a few people who feel disparaged about things you’ve say about gay rights, gay marriage, and would think ‘Heh, hypocrite,'” Harwood pressed.

“Look, I’m not to defend anything of Josh,” Huckabee replied. “Nothing to defend. But I don’t think you can disparage the entire family because one of the members did some pretty bad things.”"

    Let's see where to start?
