The Second Amendment is more than 220 years old. When it was written, the world did not have machine guns, assault rifles, or tanks, instead relying on clunky muskets that were a pain to reload.
Yet as a video from States United to Prevent Gun Violence points out, America's lax gun laws are often based on a reading of the Second Amendment that makes it hard to pass restrictive gun laws, even as our weapons get much, much deadlier.
Powerful message don't you think?
Just imagine how few gun deaths we would have each year if our guns were still as primitive as they were when the 2nd Amendment was created.
There is also a petition you might consider signing located right here.
Powerful ad. But it's been around for a couple of years.
ReplyDeleteA least several mass shootings ago.
"Several mass shootings ago."
DeleteThat may be the most depressing way to mark the passing of time that I have ever read.
That's why I wrote it.
DeleteWhen does it stop?

This is disturbing. But gun rights/paranoid 2nd Amendment freaks will respond they have availed themselves to the same weaponry available to local governments through time.
ReplyDeleteTake a look on Twitter at Dana Loesch & the right wing trolls going after Gavin Newsom for his new bill to charge $ for ammo, hopefully on the CA ballot in 2016. They are disgusting.
ReplyDeleteAnd the bible? How old? Yet folks still believe 'cause most of us aren't curious enough to think.
ReplyDeleteSorry - correction. Newsom's bill is not charging for ammo but does this:
ReplyDelete"Bottom line: The initiative would outlaw large capacity magazines with 11 or more rounds, require background checks for domestic violence, felony records and mental health for ammunition sales; would require reporting of lost and stolen guns; would mandate felons relinquish weapons; and would significantly strengthen California’s firearms database.
'The paradigm of [the National Rifle Association] has been to fight a legislative fight, and the NRA has been extraordinarily effective at stifling the legislative process,' even in solidly blue California, Newsom told POLITICO. 'We’re now going to fight a different fight — that is, direct democracy. We’re going directly to voters.'"
I'm optimistic this bill will pass in California. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Yah, there have been a lot of school killings using machine guns and tanks. Talk about the right wing using fear and the boogie man to control the masses. Sheesh.
ReplyDeleteBut actually, this statement; "The Second Amendment is more than 220 years old. When it was written, the world did not have machine guns, assault rifles, or tanks, instead relying on clunky muskets that were a pain to reload.; advocates for common citizen's to own them. Because the government didn't have these weapons to use against citizens either and the Second Amendment was designed to give citizens the power to take down the government if it got out of hand.
Petition signed.
ReplyDeleteOkay! I've solved the conundrum. We uphold the 2nd amendment by allowing only guns that were available when it was written.
