Ted Cruz claims that "Climate change is not science. It's religion."

Courtesy of Think Progress:

Sen. Ted Cruz, candidate for the highest office in the land, thinks that climate change — a phenomenon widely accepted by the scientists who study it — is a religious belief.

“Climate change is not science. It’s religion,” Cruz told Glenn Beck on Thursday.

To back up his claim, Cruz pointed to the way we talk about climate change.

“Look at the language, where they call you a denier,” he said. “Denier is not the language of science … Any good scientist is a skeptic; if he’s not, he or she should not be a scientist. But yet the language of the global warming alarmists, ‘denier’ is the language of religion, it’s heretic, you are a blasphemer.”

Gosh I love getting a lecture on science from such a burgeoning (Cough, cough) intellect as Ted Cruz.

As you can hear part of Cruz's argument against climate change being science is the comical claim that his parents are both scientists.

Some of you may remember that Ted's dad, Rafael Bienvenido Cruz, is a man who believes the story of Genesis is literally true, that Obama is a secret Muslim, and that LGBT activists are trying to legalize pedophilia.

Clearly Cruz is clearly pandering to the oil companies by making these remarks, perhaps missing the fact that at least one of them knew that burning fossil fuels was leading to climate change as far back as 1981.

Just another reason, as if people needed another one, NOT to support Ted Cruz in this nomination process.

P.S. BTW the Washington Post refuted that crap about the satellite data back in March.

Do they really believe this crap; or do they just know some voters will?

I'm no supporter--I think Cruz is a vile manipulator--but he isn't stupid. Went to Princeton, graduated magna cum laude from Harvard. That's part of what makes him evil and scarey--he's acting dumb to appeal to the worst of the Repub. party.

I don't like to hate anyone but I absolutely despise Cruz - I can't even stand looking at him.

There's a very long line but I think there may still be a few 3-slap tickets available in the matinee line.

  6. By saying it's religion, is he implying that science is an irrational set of beliefs?
Odd from a person who seems to believe that religious beliefs should trump reason when making policy...

I never took a science or energy class but I agree with Ted Cruz.

Validation that he is playing up to the money folks behind him! Did anyone else notice that the backdrop of the last Republican debate had Your Money, Your Vote plastered all over the wall? It was all I heard during the debate.

His mother is a scientist? Who exactly is his mother? She is his claim to being a US citizen but I have never heard anything about her, just about his father. Is she still alive? Are his parents married?

Dora Cruz, better known as Dora the Explorer, discovered the arc of the covenant which clearly states something, but it's not in a language she speaks. She even tried calling and there was no "Press 3 for pandering".

2:12PM -- Google and Wiki: His mother is Eleanor Elizabeth Darragh Wilson.

While I would hardly consider her a scientist, she has an undergraduate degree in mathematics and worked as a computer programmer for an oil company, which is why they ended up in Canada.

Very little other information is available about her.

It always interests me the way religious people try to defend a point of faith or in this case, willful ignorance, they ALWAYS begin by redefining words to slant the playing field in their favor.

Their favorite one is to claim that science is equal to religion because "both require belief." Obviously that's ridiculous, because accepting validated data and trusting in the scientific method to get the best answers isn't equivalent to deciding that God wrote a book based on the "fact" that the book says it's so.

But no Ted, "denier" is accurate because people like you are not "skeptical", which would require some grasp of the data and having applied some thought to it. Ted is merely dismissing the data out of hand because it does not comport with the needs of his wealthy donors.

The funny thing when the bible bangers use "science is a religion" trying to make science seemingly like a scam discredit their religions by doing so.

I think it's time for Ted to quit the campaign and to build an ark using the dimensions in the bible. But of course he's a science denier and only saying this because so many rwnj bible thumpers actually believe the Bible as God's word.

"Denier" may not be a "scientific" term but it is the appropriate descriptive word for someone who has renounced the reality of statistics and fact. So, yes, Ted Cruz, you are a "denier."

Presumably then we can count on the Liberty Institute to vigorously defend our belief in climate change on the basis of religious freedom.

We should be very afraid of this man. Both he and Rubio are giving statements that make them appear more moderate and toning down the rectiric. When Trump and Carson fail, (and they will fail) they will step forward and move into the nomination. They are both young, energetic, charismatic, and crazy. Progressive and intelligent voters, of all political party types, need to play close attention to their proven history and how they are changing their platforms to appeal to a broader base. In addition because they have Hispanic roots they would appeal to a large voting block, even though it's against their best interests to vote for these men.

  21. Ted Cruz is smart, but (IMHO) ultimately unelectable. He lacks the looks and charisma required to be president. He just doesn't come off as "presidential." Personally, I find Rubio more concerning.
