Vatican spokesman: There is "a sense of regret" concerning the Pope's meeting with Kim Davis.

Courtesy Yahoo News:

Pope Francis' meeting last week with an American woman at the center of a row over gay marriage was not something he had sought and should not be seen as an endorsement of her views, the Vatican said on Friday.

One Vatican official said there was "a sense of regret" that the pope had ever seen Kim Davis, a Kentucky county clerk who went to jail in September for refusing to honor a U.S. Supreme Court ruling and issue same-sex marriage licenses.

The encounter in Washington was originally kept secret and has sparked widespread debate since it became public this week, proving something of a misstep for the pontiff.

Looking to smother the fierce controversy, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said Davis was one of "several dozen" people who had been invited by the Vatican ambassador to see Francis during his visit to the U.S. capital.

"The Pope did not enter into the details of the situation of Mrs. Davis and his meeting with her should not be considered a form of support of her position in all of its particular and complex aspects," Lombardi said in a statement.

That sort of falls in line with some of the other recent reporting indicating that the Pope may have been tricked into meeting Davis, and that she was just a person among many to have a face to face with the Pope but that it was by no means an endorsement of her position.

Since I thought that overall the Pope's visit to America was very positive, I would like to believe that the Pope simply did not know who this person was, or understand how this interaction would be interpreted.

However I would hope that there was some disciplinary action taken on whoever set this thing up and gave the okay for it to happen in the first place.

I've read that at age 75, Archbishops must offer their resignation. It's not always accepted. But I think in this case it will be, Archbishop Carlo Vigano turns 75 in January. And I think the Pope feels hoodwinked by this Ratzinger devotee. (true). And I think a housecleaning will come about. Look how he demoted that cardinal who liked to dress in furs, and drive around in the big car. I think it was the same one who did tens of millions of dollars of upgrades to the estate he was living in. He got the boot, and I think Archbishop Carlo Vigano will very shortly.

Exactly. And this Vigano mole who tried to cut the Pope off at the knees, post visit, by having pushed Kim Davis into his line of sight, will be retired in January, if not before.
I'd expect that other Benedict and John Paul alumni will be eased out in the months and years to come. This sweet-smiling Pope has already cleared out the toxic mess that was the Vatican bank, and is moving his own people into position when he can.
But this Vigano business demonstrates that there's a strong and nasty opposition to Francis within the Vatican itself, and he must move carefully.

12:27 I agree. A couple of other facts: The lead American Bishop is the Archbishop of Louisville (Ky) who is a leader in the anti-gay marriage fight. Coming up soon is a meeting between the Pope and some/most Bishops. The topic: the family! The conservatives are afraid that after listening to all voices, the Pope is going to change some rules regarding marriage, divorce, gays, abortion. Some see this as an effort to undermine the Pope before that meeting. Afterall, the Vatican is known for byzantine intrigue. One last fact: the private audience the Vatican mentioned was with a former student the Pope is friends with. The invitation came directly from the Pope. The man is gay. The Pope knows he's gay, and welcomed his partner.

So Kim Davis is a liar, and, it's reported, this repudiation of her meeting with the Pope was dictated by Francis himself.

Anon 8:29 - And what difference does that make? Gay marriage is now the law of the land in the US regardless of what the pope says. American Catholics have picked and chosen what parts of the doctrine they want to follow for decades now. Look at the divorce rates among them.

The pope is a kind man who has been personally kind to gays and even to Kim Davis, even though she didn't deserve it. He has a job to do, which is to uphold the doctrine of the church ,which he is doing.

Kim Davis has a job to do which she is NOT doing.

Until the Pope changes Catholic dogma about gay marriage, and this one will not, gay Catholics may not marry in the Catholic church. And that is the church's decision, not theirs, so gay Catholics who marry legally are still not recognized as married by their own church. How kind and loving, huh?

Kim Davis is a repugnant piece of shit for misrepresenting the situation. (In addition to all the other reasons, of course.)

By her account, she was seated in a chair, in a private room, waiting for the Pope. When he entered, she embraced him and he embraced her.

Right then, I knew her story was bullshit.

Hopefully the Rowan County legislature will decide that she does not represent their county well and will relieve her of her duties.

It's gotten to the point where this may call for a special session.

I'm not Catholic or anything, but I just never believed the Pope would have given her a private meeting. It's unfortunate he got hoodwinked, but that's better than having all of his new fans hate him.

Are you kidding? She claimed to have a personal cuddlefest with the Pope? ::roll eyes::

People paid to stand in a line and shake hands with him. Her lawyers or book publisher probably put up the money to burnish her career as a speaker or whatever. As a fervent born-again holy wanna-be martyr, I doubt that Davis herself was overcome with a desire to touch a Catholic preacher.

So, yes, Pope Francis was taken advantage of. However, the idea of charging for a handshake with a supposed religious leader for fundraising purposes means that his own hands are less than clean in this affair. Paying for indulgences, paying for prayers, paying for handshakes, it is all the same thing: another way for a filthy rich corporation to further increase its wealth.

I have no sympathy for him.

Is the person signing one saying anything more than that the legal requirements have been satisfied? Is there a clause that says the signer—or the signer's god—approves of the marriage? If not, then her refusal to sign "is the use of powers by government officials for illegitimate private gain." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_corruption refers.

Kim was part of a group who got a hand shake, a rosary and a brief prayer, "Be Strong." If she wore a wig, it was so she would not be recognized by other people in the line who might be offended that she was there. And, let's remember that it was arranged by her lawyer who is also the head of a conservative religious organization. He is the one using Kim for his own purposes.

There was one private audience granted during the pope's visit to Washington DC, and that wasn't Kim. It was with one of the pope's former students, a gay guy, the gay guy's boy friend and some of their friends and family. http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/02/us/pope-gay-washington/
The former student and his boy friend also met the with the pope personally in 2014 in Rome. The former student had a personal relationship with the pope, dating to a time long before Kim decided to become a conservative Christian. The lawyer has an ulterior motive. The former student was renewing a longstanding relationship. I don't believe a word that the opportunistic lawyer has to say.

"This is what it sounds like when a pope gets mad."

The real story behind the pope’s meeting with Kim Davis

On Friday, Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi released anextraordinary statement, personally approved by Pope Francis, debunking nearly everything that has been reported this week about a meeting between the pope and Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who has refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

The private meeting between Davis, her husband, Joe, and the pope, which Davis’ attorney says took place at the Apostolic Nunciature (Vatican Embassy) in Washington, D.C. last Thursday? It didn’t happen. Instead, Davis was one of “several dozen persons who had been invited by the Nunciature to greet [Pope Francis] as he prepared to leave Washington for New York City,” Lombardi said in the statement.

What is the Catholic Church's position regarding sex outside of marriage (which resulted in children who were adopted by another lover of the woman). What is the Catholic Church's position on divorce, marriage, divorce, marriage, divorce and marriage again and again. (I know. Kim Davis thinks so highly of marriage that she got married 4 different times). But what about those divorces? Isn't the Catholic Church about annulment? And those bastard kids, born outside of marriage? Oh, gee, even good Christians are going to have to explain why it was moral for Bristol "not to have an abortion" while "not having a parent for the huge disappointment who should be arriving pretty soon. The Christo-Fascists will use her until she runs out of juice and then toss her aside.

As for what the Catholic Church does and does not condone, the Pope went to a prison last week. The people he chooses to meet are not all supposed to be saints, and especially not this pope. A huge part of his popularity is that he is so Christ-like and non-judgmental.

He meets thousands of people every week. He was duped by conservative American bishops, his predecessor's appointees, who are his political enemies. Papal intrigue has been going on for centuries. They probably told him she was a conscientious objector who had recently been imprisoned for her faith. He was kind to her. End of story except that now Francis knows better whom to get rid of among the American bishops.

George Takei: Kim Davis Is No Rosa Parks

The actor, activist, and internet hero to millions revisits the subject of antigay Kentucky clerk Kim Davis and her supporters, with a prediction that they are destined for 'the dust heap of history.'

Here are excerpts from Takei’s response, published in a blog on MSNBC.com:

"To her supporters, she is the Rosa Parks of religious liberty, someone who finally said, 'Enough is enough, I have rights, and I will fight for them.'

"When I view her behavior, however, I am reminded of a different character from the early civil rights era: Gov. George Wallace of Alabama. For those who weren’t born yet or simply don’t remember, Wallace was a staunch and vocal opponent to racial desegregation. For him, the sanctity of white privilege was a cherished way of life.

"Imagine if instead of denying a license to a gay couple, Ms. Davis had sought on religious grounds to deny a license to an interracial couple. She likely would have been fired on the spot, and no politicians would have rushed to stand by her side, no matter what her sincerely held religious convictions were. Discrimination based on sexual orientation is headed to a similar, inevitable end in the dust heap of history.

"And as with Gov. Wallace, decades from the day Davis stood her ground we will no doubt look back and wonder above all why so many stood with her."

And if a person does not allow others to be a conscientious objector, he denies a right.Conscientious objection must enter into every juridical structure because it is a right, a human right. Otherwise we would end up in a situation where we select what is a right, saying ‘this right that has merit, this one does not.’ It (conscientious objection) is a human right. It always moved me when I read, and I read it many times, when I read the “Chanson de Roland” when the people were all in line and before them was the baptismal font and they had to choose between the baptismal font or the sword. They had to choose. They weren’t permitted conscientious objection. It is a right and if we want to make peace we have to respect all rights."

This will give them time to plot a story of why this baby's daddy has had absolutely nothing to do with bristles during the pregnancy. Nor have the palins gone into an attack mode on who they suspect is the father.
What it boils down to is that at the age of 17/18 years old Levi Johnston stood up to the plate. He acknowledged paternity, never bad-mouthed bristles, paid child support that was inflated to the point one would think he was paying child support for more than one kid. He and his wife have welcomed his son into their home and requested to be able to have as much time with Tripp as his depraved mother allows.
Obviously this second victim of bristle's quest to trap a man isn't some high school kid the palin klan can manipulate and threaten into submission. He's either one who won't acknowledge he's the father or is planning to take bristle to court demanding a paternity

Conclusion: "It’s a good pot-boiling tale, and a convincing one. But it’s a reminder that even in an institution like the Catholic Church that is supposedly an absolute monarchy ruled by the Vicar of Christ, there’s a lot more going on that what one man wants to say. "

The meeting between Ms. Davis and the pope was brokered by Archbishop Carlo Vigano, napal nuncio to the United States of America. In short, Vigano, a Ratzinger loyalist, who has been conspicuous and publicly involved in the same cause as Kim Davis and her legal team, arranged a meeting with Davis that the legal team uses to its great public advantage. Archbishop Vigano and Ms. Davis' shyster lawyer, Matt Staver, were both involved in an anti-same sex marriage march in Washington sponsored the National Organization for Marriage, a borderline hate group. The poor old pope didn't know anything about Ms. Davis and offered her the usual warm encouragement that he offers everyone, especially gay people. Now, the Vatican is trying to backtrack and the Vatican spokesman is suggesting that people should ask the papal nuncio for clarification about why the meeting was arranged. Archbishop Vigano is a rightist malevolent force and his action was an attempt to take down a popular and marginally liberal pope.

      Delete
    14. Anonymous10:06 PM

No 8:55 they are not likethat because of one big difference. The pope has been friends for years with gays who are actually married while Kim Davis doesn't believe they should have equal rights at all. In fact with so many clergy sodomizing little boys and those that never had sex with women that the vatican has protected for centuries I'm sure he unknowingly knows of many more.

The vatican released this statement bout Grassi, the pope's gay friend: "“Mr. Yayo Grassi, a former Argentine student of Pope Francis, who had already met other times in the past with the Pope, asked to present his mother and several friends to the Pope during the Pope’s stay in Washington, DC,” the statement read. “As noted in the past, the Pope, as pastor, has maintained many personal relationships with people in a spirit of kindness, welcome and dialogue.”

In addition there is video showing Francis embracing both Grassi and his partner. Where is Kim's video embracing gays?
Grass told the media that he and his partner, Iwan, also met with the pope last year in Rome, and that Francis has never disparaged his sexuality.
“He has never been judgmental,” Grassi said. “He has never said anything negative.”
To put it flatly Kim Davis IS judgmental. I doubt she has any gay friends (that she knows of) while the pope is not. So Davis and the pope are not likethat.

    15. Anonymous10:08 PM

And 8:55 the pope hangs out with gay sinners while Kim Davis refuses to even do her job as a civil servant with them.

    16. Anonymous6:50 AM

Hanging out with gay sinners is good PR for the Pope. But that's all it is. The Catholic Church, of which the Pope is the head, still considers them sinners unless they are celibate, it still forbids them to marry in the church, and it still condemns gay adoption. It always will, as long as Francis has anything to say about it.

      Delete
    17. Anonymous9:22 AM

6:50 The pope was hanging with these gay sinners for 19 years because that's how long they have been life friends. Gay marriage wasn't even on the radar back then so this isn't a PR issue.

Staver said the request had come on September 14, the day Davis returned to work after her release from jail. Davis and her husband were picked up at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in a van by private security guards who spoke Italian, he said. She had been instructed to change her hairstyle so she would not be identified.

There's something rotten in the Vatican. I watched RAI, the italian station, and Lombardi's "take" morphed from "It didn't happen" to "It may have happened, His Holiness met with many people and was physically exhausted at times" to, today, it DID happen, she was with a group of pilgrims, among whom happened to be a former gay student of the Pope, his same sex partner, and their (adopted/ in vitro) children, the Pope turns no one away and may not have been cognizant of the politics surrounding Mrs. Davis" (paraphrased from memory, and may or may not change tomorrow or anytime in the future.

My ONLY question would be, Why did the story change when the truth wouldn't have to from the beginning?

    1. Anonymous4:29 PM

There was no change in story and nothing untruthful.

They never said it didn't happen. They initially didn't confirm or deny, which is quite different.

They obviously got caught off guard. They didn't know anything about her and got snookered by their own people, enemies from within.

They had to do some research on her and have now released a statement that is very clear that the Pope does not support Kim Davis and her ilk.

Political intrigue and infighting has swirled around the Vatican for centuries. This is a nonevent. A little inconsequential culture warrior tried to make points by using the Pope. It worked for one news cycle, but at the cost of her credibility. From now on, she'll be known as the asshole who lied about the Pope.

      Delete
    2. Anita Winecooler3:36 PM

From "It didn't happen" to "It may have happened" to "it did happen" were Lombardi's words reported in Italian Media, which surrounds the Vatican and has nothing to do wit what they put out publicly. The neither confirm nor deny part was reported here in the states.
I agree it's a non event, but someone other than Kim and her ilk are not telling the truth. It ultimately comes from Lombardi or it would't have had to change.

  42. So the truth has come out, and as I commented on Gryphen's Wednesday post on this topic, the Pope was indeed almost ambushed here.

Davis and her conniving attorney have been exposed as schemers trying to trade on the Pope's power and popularity. Not only did the Pope not grant Davis a private audience; he chose to have a confidential encounter with a former student of his, Yayo Grassi, a gay man, along with Grassi's partner and some family friends.

First the 100,000-strong Peruvian prayer vigil hoax, and now a failed attempt to use the Pope to further her biased cause. If Kim Davis wants to stay in the limelight, she should hire better PR people.

Was Pope Francis Actually Swindled into Meeting Kim Davis?

"First of all, let us stipulate that there are more than a few members of the Church's permanent bureaucracy, both within the Clan Of The Red Beanie and without, who are not happy that this gentleman got elected Pope, and who are not happy with what he's done and said since he was. Second, let us stipulate that many members of this group are loyal to both former pope Josef Ratzinger and, through him, to the memory (and to what they perceive as the legacy) of John Paul II who, for good and ill, had a much different idea of how to wield a papacy than Papa Francesco does. Third, let us stipulate that this opposition to the current pope has been active and vocal, to say nothing of paranoid. Finally, let us stipulate that, for over 2000 years, the Vatican has been a hotbed of intrigue, betrayal, and sanctified ratfcking on a very high scale. (It also has been a hotbed of, well, hot beds, but that's neither here nor there at the moment.) So, if you're one of these people, and you're looking to ratfck the pope's visit to the United States, and to his agenda in general, you'd be looking to put him in a box. So, how would you do that?"
