Donald Trump's call for a database to track Muslims takes him to a place where even Ted Cruz dares not tread.

Courtesy of NBC News:

Donald Trump "would certainly implement" a database system tracking Muslims in the United States, the Republican front-runner told NBC News on Thursday night.

"I would certainly implement that. Absolutely," Trump said in Newton, Iowa, in between campaign town halls.

"There should be a lot of systems, beyond databases," he added. "We should have a lot of systems."

When asked whether Muslims would be legally obligated to sign into the database, Trump responded, "They have to be — they have to be."

As one might imagine Jeb Bush also immediately called Trump out for his remarks:

"You talk about internment, you talk about closing mosques, you talk about registering people. That's just wrong. I don't care about campaigns," he said on CNBC. "It's not a question of toughness. It's to manipulate people's angst and their fears. That's not strength, that's weakness."

Less predictably fellow candidate, and Trump sycophant, Ted Cruz slammed his foot on the brakes:

"I'm a big fan of Donald Trump's but I'm not a fan of government registries of American citizens," he told reporters of a plan Trump said he backed a day earlier. "The First Amendment protects religious liberty, I've spent the past several decades defending religious liberty."

Wow, losing Ted Cruz. That's big!

I have this image of Cruz following Trump around like a puppy, desperate to snatch up any crumbs of support that might fall off his master's table. Those crumbs are the foundation of Cruz's plan to win the nomination, so you know he is not walking away from that on impulse.

So now the question is, will THIS hurt Trump's poll ratings, or is he really just tapping into the darkness at the soul of the Republican base?

And remember a Rhode Island state senator has already resurrected the specter of internment camps, so there is already evidence that Trump's statements will not be seen as problematic to those who see a terrorist behind every bush and believe that white Christians are losing their hold on the reigns of power in America.

Ted wants to bring only Christians, so he is just as bad as Trump. How is he going to separate them, don't be fooled, Cruz will have databases too. He sees the backlash against Trump so he is pretending he is all for religious freedom. Just waiting to see Trump fall.

Stephen Colbert Is P*SSED OFF At The Hate Aimed At Refugees, And He’s Not Afraid To Show It (VIDEO)

Stephen Colbert isn’t typically one to get angry on his show. He has the ability to add a light-hearted touch to just about any issue. When the House decided to be cowards, however, passing a bill that would refuse Syrian refugees safe haven in the United States, Colbert had clearly had enough.

Combine that extreme act of cowardice with the yellow currently being worn by every single Republican presidential candidate and no less than 24 GOP Governors, and what you get is a Colbert rant so fine you won’t be able to help but laugh as the anger builds.

Award-Winning Vet Blasts Anti-Refugee Republicans Using Reagan’s Words (TWEETS)

...One of the people calling the GOP out is U.S. Marine Corps veteran Phil Klay, who was in combat during the 2007 and 2008 troop surge. When Klay returned home from Iraq, he wrote “Redeployment,” a book based on his experience that would earn him the National Book Award for fiction in 2014. When the U.S. House of Representatives voted to pass a Republican-backed bill that would halt a program aimed at resettling thousands of Syrian refugees yesterday, Klay blasted the GOP in a series of tweets, questioning if America really was “home of the brave” and using former Republican president Ronald Reagan’s own words to illustrate his point:

Seth Meyers DESTROYS GOP Refugee Hatred, Bludgeons Cruz’s Hypocrisy (VIDEO)

The relentless Republican hatred of Syrian refugees seeking asylum away from their war-torn nation and rampant extremism is utterly reprehensible. For being such “compassionate conservatives,” you sure wouldn’t know it by this representation of their actions and behavior.

Taking them to task over this horrific behavior is none other than Seth Meyers on Late Night. He completely destroyed them, calling them out one by one, even going after New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie when he said he wouldn’t take in five-year-old orphans. Meyers said:

Muslim US Marine DESTROYS Donald Trump In Single Tweet, Drops Mic

...Donald Trump, who has spent the week embracing his inner Nazi, has officially been put in his place by a Muslim U.S. Marine.

Sergeant Tayyib Rashid, a veteran of the Marine Corps, took a special offense to the GOP presidential front-runner calling for Muslims to have to wear ID badges to track and identify their religion.

In perhaps one of the greatest mic drop moments of all time, Rashid tweeted, “I’m an American Muslim and I already carry a special ID badge. Where’s yours?” He finished the tweet off with his identification card for the armed forces.

If You Didn't Think Trump Was A Fascist, Consider His Database Idea

.... Later, Trump was repeatedly asked to explain the difference between requiring Muslim to enter a database and the requirement the Jews register in Nazi Germany.

He responded four times by simply saying, "You tell me."

I repeat: This is the guy who leads the field for the GOP nomination. Nothing says small government like forcing an entire group of people to register in a government database on the basis of their religion, right?

Why isn't the press blowing a gasket over this?

This is arguably their leading candidate, and they seem content to let everyone know that they are giving Trump's nasty plans tacit approval by remaining mute.

And our politicians worked together to make things happen. Most of the time they were able to get things done. Were they perfect? No, but they TRIED. Look at what we became when no one listened to Goldwater's warning about religion taking over the republican party.

When fear takes over, rational thought flies out the window. Here's an example: the chances of dying in a car accident are a thousand times greater than dying in a plane crash. Yet, so many of us fear flying and but think nothing of getting in our cars to go shopping (and statistics show that most accidents take place close to home).
The Repubs are hyping the fear factor largely because history has shown that when personal and economic security are at higher risk, the GOP wins.

Donald Trump's bigotry against Muslims has safety implications we can't ignore

People who wouldn’t dream of voting for Donald Trump still mostly perceive him as a joke – with a platform far too outlandish and racist to win him the presidency. But Trump’s candidacy is no laughing matter. Whether or not he has a chance at the White House, the racism and white supremacy that Trump is tapping into runs deep in the American psyche, and his incitement is strengthening a violent and racist undercurrent.

His latest comments, calling for unprecedented levels of surveillance of Muslim communities – including a database to track them and possibly including special identification cards – are appalling. But what really sends chills through my body – as an American and as a Jew – is the lack of serious and sustained public outcry in response.

Thus far in his run for president, Republican candidate Donald Trump has made headlines in his fanning of fears, xenophobia, racism and religious bigotry against immigrants, people of color and Muslims.

As Republican governors rush to keep Syrian refugees out of their states, it is clear that Trump’s rhetoric is revealing and emboldening a revanchist nativist strain in the Republican party. Treating Trump as a joke gives his noxious ideology room to grow. The climate he is creating has very real implications for the safety and lives of people of color, Muslims and immigrants.

I’m reminded of Hannah Arendt’s warnings that the world’s greatest tragedies are not just the result of leaders misusing their power, but also of average people who simply stay quiet and go about their business. This is a moment when all of us who find Trump’s ideas repellent need to make our voices heard. He isn’t funny. He isn’t colorful. And he certainly isn’t harmless.

Demagogues are quick to use the Holocaust as a prop to make their points, so like many Jews, I am hesitant to compare current day politics to the violence and virulent anti-semitism of the Nazis. But the parallels between what Trump is proposing and what European Jews faced in the first half of the 20th century are too blatant for me – or the US Holocaust Memorial Museum – to ignore.
Isis wants Christians and Muslims to fight a war. Will Republicans take the bait?
    Ali Gharib
    Read more

In 1938, Jews were described as a threat to German national security. The German government forced all Jews to carry identification cards with the letter “J” to indicate their Jewish heritage. Jews with “non-Jewish” first names had to add “Israel” and “Sara” to their given names on their IDs. Each step further threatened their rights and safety; each was deemed necessary for the wider public good. And most average Germans failed to speak out in protest against these affronts to their neighbors.

Asked in today’s interview whether he would support “registering Muslims in a database or giving them a form of special identification that noted their religion”, Trump told reporters that: “certain things will be done that we never thought would happen in this country in terms of information and learning about the enemy”. He added: “We’re going to have to do things that were frankly unthinkable a year ago”.

Americans think that the tragedies of yesterday could never repeat themselves. But with each racist incitement, Trump is making the “unthinkable” more and more possible in our country. We need every American who rejects racism and the politics of fear to demand that Donald Trump and his ideas be marginalized and seen in the true depth of their racism and xenophobia. If we don’t act now, we risk allowing a truly dangerous climate to develop – one that we will regret for decades to come.

While his methods are a bit over the top I bet that countries such as Belgium, if they could go back in time and know what they know now, might enact a bit stricter controls on immigrants from the Middle East. Rather than harass those that are already in our country we should certainly exercise the tightest controls regarding those who wish to travel or emigrate here from muslim jihadist hot spots.

An ounce of prevention, and all that, is what will save us from having to clean out a mess of jihadists, such as Belgium, and now France, will have to, rather than just nip this thing in the bud.

They were given election platforms (from all parties) in their own language and encouraged by 48 Imans in Mosques that it was their civic duty to vote in their adopted country and look at the result.

When this comes to peoples attention, a common theme I hear is "what is it about the Germans that they could allow Hitler to come to power". My response is that this level of hate is possible in any country and with any religion or race. The factors have to be just right for it to bubble to the surface and take control.

My prediction is that this revelation on his part will strengthen Donald's standing with the republican base, not weaken it. If that comes to pass, I will consider that as a piece of evidence that my assertion is correct.
