"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." Just so long as they're not Syrian.

Caught between Iraq and a hard place it would seem.

Is this really who we are?

Well, we will see what happens, but there are other Western countries that can take them in, even other Middle Eastern countries.

    1. Well, France is taking in 30,000 and that is after the attacks last week. So other countries are taking refugees.

That's not the point. We should be opening our doors as well. The Syrians I've met who are recent immigrants here are doctors, engineers- doing the jobs many Americans are frankly too lazy to pursue. It's haaarrrrddd and you have to know maaatttthhh. eeeuuuuwww.

With my off season small business I interact with a lot of refugees. It will be interesting to talk to them and get their take on it. These people have always treated me so well. My heart goes out to them.

    4. Others are taking more than their fair share.

The 10,000 the U. S. has pledged is little more than lip service.

I hope not, but it seems that some Americans, upset over the idea of the US taking in 10,000 Syrian refugees, are threatening to move to Canada. They seem unaware that Canada, with a population roughly one-tenth the size of the US, are talking about accepting 25,000. See for example http://globalnews.ca/news/2347401/americans-threatening-to-move-to-canada-if-u-s-takes-in-syrian-refugees/

Ttump wants to round up 11 million and ship them south of the border. Other GOP candidates say "we'll only take Syrans refugees who are christians". But..but..don't you think the vast majority of the Mexicans scheduled for deportment are christians? The gop/tp are so confusing.

Perhaps we should return the Statue of Liberty to the French,by letting the least among us promulgate their fear and hatred,it no longer stands as a symbol of freedom in the America.

  6. Worried over a terrorist attack - go to your colleges, theaters. And your churches. (I know this sounds wrong) only white Americans are allowed to play kill an American with the blessings of the NRA!
As for America there are still places that are white only. Better not be black, Hispanic, or Asian or the tired and the poor. You have to love this country, gave it 20 yrs of my life in the military for this crap.

Not here in CT, where the governor just accepted a family of Syrian refugees turned back in Indiana. Yes we do have an online petition to block refugees but last I heard it had only 17000 signatures. Hopefully more intelligent and compassionate heads will prevail.

Christian groups break with GOP over Syrian refugees

Evangelical Christians, as well as Christians more broadly, are a core group in the Republican electoral base and are among the most passionate advocates for aiding refugees.

No, the governors can’t stop Syrian migrants

Their talking point might be clever politics, but it's a legal non-starter.

... Politically, it’s a winning position with a lot of Americans right now: as presidential candidates whip up anti-immigrant sentiment, it plays on voters’ desire to be kept safe from what sounds like a dangerous wave of potential terrorists.

But legally speaking? The technical constitutional-law term for these declarations is “bluster.”

Here’s the fact about governors’ plans to block the entry of refugees or any other immigrants to their states: They can’t do it. The decision to admit a person to the United States belongs to the federal government exclusively. Once a person is legally admitted to the United States, she can live wherever she chooses. States don’t issue visas any more than they declare war. Indeed, putting foreign affairs under the firm control of one central government was one of the primary motivations of the Founders in creating the Constitution in the first place.

Unfortunately, 7:31, that does NOT mean the governors can't whip up anti-Syrian sentiment and endanger the lives of the refugees!

It's who we (the US) seems to have become. The fear propaganda under republican administrations has led us to this point. Most of us who remember NOT living in fear find all of this fear propaganda to be anti-American.

No, this isn't what we're supposed to be. Other countries are holding telethons, opening churches, their homes, and other suitable public buildings to help the refugees, regardless of religion. I know families from Syria who've done very well immigrating legally, hold good jobs, get decent educations, pay taxes, you know, "American" ish. Some people are painting with too broad a brush, I'd love to drop them in a foreign country with no money, housing, jobs, and make their way like our ancestors did.

  15. Today on the radio I heard our right wing wanting refugees to pass a "Christianity" test, be approved by THREE high officials and even that muslims be interred in camps.

There was also an interview with the daughter of a Japanese Camp survivor. She was a baby when they were interred and still has medical problems due to early childhood rickets because of the lack of nutrition.

Personally, I would love for George Takei, who remembers being interred, to really blast all of this talk of camps.

What are we going to do next? Have all muslims wear a yellow moon and star on armbands and make them all live in a muslim ghetto?

Is that the Fascism the GOP wants for Amerika?

And yes, that was a thinly veiled nazi reference.

And sadly that's the reality of it. We were bad before. Since 2008 this is who we've become.
