A New York City tabloid is continuing its battle with the National Rifle Association, calling NRA honcho Wayne LaPierre “Jihadi Wayne” on the cover of Monday morning’s edition for opposing sensible gun laws that could prevent terrorists from purchasing high-powered weapons.
The New York Daily News screaming headline “Nowhere To Hide, Jihadhi Wayne” on Monday morning comes on the heels of a similar headline last Wednesday reading: “NRA’s Sick Jihad.”
At issue is the NRA using their overwhelming influence with lawmakers to block a law that would ban anyone on the terrorist watch list from purchasing a gun.
The bill, known as the Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act, was proposed in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris that left 129 people in Paris dead and hundreds more injured. Gun control advocates say that a legal loophole allows suspects on the terrorist watch list to purchase guns while the same list prevents them from flying on U.S. airlines.
The bill was originally proposed in 2007, but has been blocked by conservative lawmakers who are heavily backed by the NRA.
Well good for the New York Daily News. Which is not something I get to say very often.
So I guess the next time Americans are gunned down in the streets by terrorists, most likely NOT Muslim terrorists, we will know exactly where to lay the blame.
Not that I did not know that already of course.
We need to see more of this from other papers and all the other news media. AND doing the same thing when our politicians make insanely stupid remarks or flat out lies.
ReplyDeleteLet the jackasses sue and when they lose, turn around and counter sue for court costs. Maybe if a few of them lose in court, we can get rid of the fear the media currently seem to have and get back to actually DOING their job.
As for the garbage at places like Faux News? I haven't a clue how to handle them.
Tabloid truth. Sort of like a stopped clocked being right twice a day (or a military clock being correct once a day.

As usual we're left scratching our heads trying to understand why such a common sense piece of legislation would be opposed by the very group that espouses guns as necessary to our freedom.
ReplyDeleteApparently hundreds of America lives don't outweigh the financial benefits of selling more guns. Bottom line: acceptable losses.
It was a "tabloid" that exposed the Duggars too...
ReplyDeleteThe reason gun owners resist any new, even reasonable regulations is that gun haters make no secret of the fact that they really don't want reasonable regulations. They want the end of private gun ownership period. So gun owners, even reasonable ones of which there are many, fear any new regulation will be a wedge used to wriggle gun ownership away from them.
ReplyDeleteIf you really want reasonable regulations, you need to be reasonable yourself. Otherwise, just like all other aspects of politics and life in general, you have the two extremes fighting it out from two equally ridiculous positions, while the vast majority in the middle seethe at the disfunctionality of it all.
If, as you say, the vast majority in the middle wants reasonable legislation, then why don't we have it in a 'majority rules' democracy?
