Texas family argues that they do not have to really teach their children anything while homeschooling them because Jesus is coming.

"Oh thank God, now I don't have to finish my homework."
Courtesy of KRGV:

Laura McIntyre began educating her nine children more than a decade ago inside a vacant office at an El Paso motorcycle dealership she ran with her husband and other relatives.

Now the family is embroiled in a legal battle the Texas Supreme Court hears next week that could have broad implications on the nation's booming home-school ranks. The McIntyres are accused of failing to teach their children educational basics because they were waiting to be transported to heaven with the second coming of Jesus Christ.

At issue: Where do religious liberty and parental rights to educate one's own children stop and obligations to ensure home-schooled students ever actually learn something begin?

Well the woman has a point.

After all if she teaches her children facts, they may not be so easily manipulated by her iron age superstitious nonsense.

People have literally been waiting for the return of Jesus Christ for over two thousand years. Putting their lives on hold, terrifying their children with stories of the Rapture, ignoring Climate Change, and refusing to learn anything that might refute their faith that this life is nothing except a stepping stone to the eternal life which awaits them.

This is child abuse, plain and simple.

Great comment! Maybe Jesus doesn't want ignoramus people in heaven.

  2. Well of course. It's the same reason we can trash the whole fuckin' planet, and not conserve anything, because as long as we get our dumb asses 'born again' and "saved" we'll be among the privileged when Superm-, er Jesus, arrives again to lift us all into the clouds, happily ever after. No need to trouble about any clutter left behind.

Maybe for fun, he'll get the spell wrong and land in somebody's utility closet like Aunt Clara on Bewitched.

    3. It would almost be worth believing in God so that he would meet these destructive right wing nutjobs at the pearly gates, chastise them at a very high decibel level for trashing his planet, killing off his animals and vandalizing his creation. Then kicking them in the backsides all the way down to hell.

Jesus said to honor your Father and Mother, which would also pertain to God the Father. You can't respect God and disrespect his creation.

But I expect most of them are Republicans so the disconnect is understandable.

  3. How about that: Rethuglicans raise their own "low information, easily duped" voters.

Hold that "logic" and take it one step further. Why have the kids live and suffer when it's going to end the same way? Hand them out loaded guns, think of the nice new car they could buy and upgrade to a shiny double wide with all the bells and whistles?
Uggggg NINE kids? Stupid people should need a license to reproduce. This is beyond child abuse.

Just another bunch of ill-educated children that the rest of us will be paying the welfare and food stamp bill for. At least now most states have a 5 year moratorium on welfare/food stamp benefits so we'll end up starving these idiots out of the gene pool. Why do these stupid assholes over-breed when they only set their children up for abject failure in today's society?

If the group wants to screw the Republicans all they have to do is reveal Sarah Palin and John McCain's biggest scam ever pulled on the American public with Sarah Palin's fake pregnancy with Tri-G. Reveal it ALL, Anonymous! Bring that bitch down This country can't take much more of her negativity and narcissistic personality.

I agree that to deprive a child of an education is child abuse. And I'm talking about keeping them illiterate, which would prevent them from holding any kind of decent job - not talking about giving them a Christian-centered education (which however much Gryphen would disapprove, isn't a bad thing.)

However, I also think that deliberately creating a fatherless child is also a form of child abuse. And having money doesn't make this right. It's like breaking someone's legs and then saying "well he has a golden cast, and that's a lot more than what most people with a broken leg have." This is why I alternate between pitying Bristol (for her dysfunction and incredible lack of dignity/shame) and resenting her for what she did to her two (three, four?) kids.

That second part is pretty offensive. First, no one creates a "fatherless child" by natural means. Many women of means choose AI from a sperm donation. and raise darn good kids.

"First, no one creates a "fatherless child" by natural means"

Of course no child is "fatherless" in the biological sense. I was referring to a child created by a donor who has no intention of being in the child's life. I see no reason why a child should grow up without a father because it's mother wants a baby. Why is her "right" to a child more important than a child's right to a father? She can always adopt. The question isn't whether the kids themselves are good, it's whether it's fair to deprive them of the love and influence of a Dad. I wonder why we expect the child to make the sacrifice. Is anyone else in American culture supposed to just accept second best? The unspoken rule of American culture is that accepting any kind of limitation is the equivalent of death - worthy of needing a liberation movement to help one restore his dignity and his rights. Children shouldn't be reduced to high-level house pets. The Left's obsession with legitimizing illegitimacy is even less understandable than their stance on abortion. At least with the later we could argue whether or not the entity in question qualifies as human. And the conservative movement's increasing use of the abortion issue to make single motherhood acceptable respresents a flight from reality. Of course I'd rather see a child born outside of marriage than aborted. But the Right needs to stop this obsession about out of wedlock children being OK because "a baby is a blessing." The important question is this: was being born outside of marriage a blessing for the child?

You might also consider all the men who fathered a child with a woman and then walked away. Particularly if the child is born with any birth defects or cognitive issues, the father just says, "I didn't sign up for this" and leaves, often fighting tooth-and-nail against paying any support at all of the child he helped create. Instead of hand-wringing and concern-trolling over women, let's put some focus on the real problem.

You might ALSO consider the mothers who divorce the children's father, then keep the father out of the children's lives by whatever means they can. Often, this includes filing false reports of child abuse so the father gets no time with the kids or only supervised time, or poisoning the children against the father and then stopping visits because "the kids don't want to see him!" It happens all the time.

I suspect for every false report of child abuse filed, there are 20 cases of actual child abuse happening that the judges don't care about and send the children back to their father to be raped and murdered.

  16. I guess it never occurred to these Rapture morons (including a certain grizzled sow in Wasilla Alaska) that Jesus might have something to say to them about "a mind is a terrible thing to waste", and they might get "left behind" for not respecting God's gift of human intelligence.

  17. It goes beyond child abuse.

Our government recognizes that children need to meet a minimum of education in order to be productive citizens and responsible voters. Failing to meet those minimums makes them a burden on society. That is why everyone pays property taxes toward public education whether they have children or not. An educated populace is a benefit to ALL.

Not only are these parents denying their children an education, which may be considered a form of abuse, they are also abusing the government by potentially putting 9 adults on social security or some other form of treatment/support at tax payer expense. They may also be a danger to themselves and others if they are so illiterate they cannot read well enough to pass a driver's test, read a voter's pamphlet or read signs and labels regarding poison and dangerous combinations of common products (like bleach and ammonia.)

I believe when you home school your children there are forms ou fill out that are essentially contracts. You agree to conditions to provide an education to your children in lieu of mandatory public school attendance.

Sounds like these parents violated those terms all over the place.

    But I'm not surprised.

    Texas.

They'll probably have a monument erected to them.

I believe that depends on the state.

    2. I believe school attendance, be it public, private or religious is mandatory. If not any of those, then there is something you fill out to indicate your child is getting an education through home schooling. There is some sort of ACCOUNTABILITY. The means may vary from state to state but all children have to be given an education of some kind, be it formal or informal. Even home schooled children and parents have to meet certain criteria. Hence the money to be made selling them packaged lesson plans.

I hope this couple loses all nine to foster care. It would be a kindness to these kids in the long run.

No I doubt any Oalin would do sjir to get an education..... None are that smart to begin with. :-)

One can only hope that this will lead to some standards regarding this thing called "home schooling".
