California pastor shot by his own gun safety instructor. Well it's a good thing he was trained.

Pastor Tom Smith. Now holier than ever.
Courtesy of CBS News:

A Modesto pastor is recovering after being shot during a gun safety class, CBS Sacramento reports.

Tom Smith, a family pastor who also helps with church security, was shot by his own gun safety instructor.

Modesto Police say they were acting out a scenario when a loaded gun the instructor was holding accidentally went off. They say they gun fired at the end of class after the instructor put a mock gun down and picked up his real loaded gun.

Police say so far it's unclear if the instructor believed he was using the mock gun he had been using to teach the class.

You know I'm certainly no expert on gun safety instruction but it seems to me that the first rule of gun safety class is to NOT shoot any of your students.

But hey, maybe I'm wrong.

Yep, more guns in more hands is certainly keeping us all safe.

IMHO, your comments are completely uncalled for.

8:23 AM Most Pastors' comments are uncalled for every Sunday. But you can continue to help supply them with paid vacations and new cars for falsely interpreting your Bible for you.

The only hope we have in this nation is that all these RW gun lovers shoot themselves before they shoot someone sane. It doesn't seem to matter to them that we are losing a child a day to a gun found in their own homes. They really truly do not care, unless the 'poor, distraught parents' get charged, and then they are all up in arms about that. Of course, they are always up in arms about something, aren't they? Just not the number of shootings in this nation. Vote out the NRA loving GOP...every last one of them!

shame on those who have been struck by gun tragedy and don't make it their life's mission to educate the public about the dangers of guns.

Great idea ... shoot all students at gun safety classes. Once they feel the pain of a bullet, they will be more careful with their guns.

A loaded gun in the classroom and the gun did not have the safety engaged. And the guy calls himself an instructor.

Instead of registering Muslims, maybe we should be registering and certifying gun instructors.

I appreciate all the articles you write on the dangers of gun ownership.

The fact that they call it an accident is just wrong. It wasn't an accident.

Exactly. There is nothing accidental about leaving a loaded gun lying around.

This Is How Fox News Brainwashes Its Viewers: Our In-Depth Investigation of the Propaganda Cycle

...Over the last ten years, everyone I know has lost a friend or family member or mentor to Fox News. Like me, they have watched helplessly as people they love have become part of the conservative punditry herd and, over time, traded their compassion for paranoia; their thoughtful opinions for manufactured outrage; and their empathy for hateful rhetoric. These people — these moms and dads and aunts and uncles and grandparents and brothers and sisters and pastors and politicians and friends — have been deceived into believing that Fox News and Fox-approved talk radio hosts provide the only commentary they can trust.

What these people so dear to us fail to understand is that Fox News is not only uninterested in being fair and balanced; it is also uninterested in being a reliable source of news. That’s because Fox News is playing a zero-sum political game in which every major news story is an opportunity to use their viewers as pawns to advance the power and agenda of the most extremist ideology of the Republican Party.

I don't know why a church would need armed security. But I hope this taught the pastor and his flock that this may not be a good idea.
Though I will say that at least the Pastor did go to get trained, unlike many people that buy weapons.

  13. Am I a bad person because I don't care?
He was romancing violence and connecting it tacitly to faith.
How does the saying go- "You lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas"? (something I think of everyday when I see how the GOP embraced the skank from Wasilla and now has a whole roster of them vying for the presidency).

Just an observation - this happened in Modesto which is near where I live. It did not show up in The Modesto Bee until after this story hit the national news - believe it was about 10 days - I could be wrong about exact number of days. This pastor heads one of Modesto's "mega-churches".

Generally speaking, there are good gun safety instructors and bad gun safety instructors. Just like anything else, I wonder what research Reverend did? Or did he just go with the lowest bidder?
There's something wrong with the concept of guns being allowed on church property. This "not really an accident but we'll call it one to save on filling out paperwork and filing pesky charges" wouldn't have happened with a good instructor AT A SHOOTING RANGE.
I'm a bit rusty, I'd have to wear a hardhat before setting foot in a church, but is there a patron saint of guns or a blessing of the guns ceremony?
