North Carolina mayor takes oath of office on copy of Constitution instead of Bible. Baby steps man, baby steps.

Bob Scott, a humanist and AHA member, was sworn in yesterday as Mayor of Franklin, North Carolina. He said, "Last night...

Speaking about taking his oath of office, Scott said:

"Last night I decided to take my oath holding a copy of the Constitution because there is so much controversy surrounding separation of church and state. I am a firm believer in keeping religion and government separate."

In my opinion EVERY American politician should take their oath of office holding the Constitution.

After all THAT is the document they are swearing to uphold.

Thank Zeus.

    Good for him.

Meanwhile, something's wrong with these people.

The scorned ex-girlfriend of an S&M “master” to a Catholic priest went right to the top and sent Timothy Cardinal Dolan e-mails that were hardly suitable for church — laying out details of the romps that were allegedly funded with cash skimmed from the poor box.

    Jeebus!

I so agree with this action! We badly need to implement this throughout the country and get rid of the bible!

We also need to redo guidelines as to the IRS and stop waiving taxes for the various churches throughout our country. They should also be required to pay real estate taxes on all the properties they own throughout the country too.

Amen. I attend a small church, an this would be hard for us, but it is the right thing to do. We own two lots. We pay taxes on our parsonage because we are currently renting it to a non church member, but we should sell the extra lot, and we would, if we had to pay taxes on it. There are 60 churches in my small city of 50,000. That's a lot of real estate!

Ending all government welfare for religion would be a excellent step.

That's what it is, government welfare for religion.

Amazing.. Queue the outrage, hubris, and umbrage from the slavering hordes of Christian supremacists who can't live without subjugating all else to their own ancient myths.

Ready for the onslaught of Palin worshipers, Ted Bundy acolytes, and disciples of Ted Cruz who are poutraged over this slap in the face of 'Murcan values??

If only President Obama had done that. They hated him even before he'd been inaugurated, so he had little to lose by doing it.

Unfortunately Obama is a christian and promotes such farcical government-sponsored drivel such as the National Day of Prayer. Don't count on him to take any swipes at religion, he's one of them.

Bob is my Mayor and I am proud to call him my friend : ) Bob is countering our county commissioners and our Sheriff who have recently decided to add " In God We Trust " to the outside of our Courthouse and on every patrol car : (

I used to live out there in Cullowhee and head down to the Nantahala to enjoy the white water and the gorgeous scenery. I'm glad to know people like you and Bob are there.

Unfortunately, there are also lots of people like your sheriff and county commissioners.

Great! ...and alsotoo they shouldn't be able to swear on the Constitution until they can pass a basic high school civics test on the Constitution. That requirement alone would have kept in hideously inept Paylin from public life.

Boy, are you correct with that idea! I wonder how many of our politicians on the national, state and local levels could pass a "Constitution" exam?

      I would suspect very few!

I think the Constitution should be used for oaths of office. Officeholders have to swear their allegiance to uphold the Constitution, not the Bible. GOP members of Congress ought to have to repeat their oaths of office at least once a day so they can remember who they represent. And it's not the Koch brothers or Grover Norquist or the NRA.

Makes absolutely more sense than the Bible or any other Holy Book. A pin cushion would be fine as long as they promise to stick a needle in their eye if their oath isn't followed. But you're right, baby steps!!

  10. Excellent!

Who is going to argue with this?

And what better way to swear an oath but on the very document you are swearing to uphold?
