President Obama will make even reality shows temporarily cool tonight.

Courtesy of the New York Times:

He helped make tea from catkins, ate a salmon pre-chewed by a bear, and discussed why people would drink their own urine.

On Thursday night, President Obama will appear in an episode of the survivalist reality show “Running Wild With Bear Grylls,” part of an effort by the White House to highlight the perils of climate change. While trekking in the Alaskan wild, the president and Mr. Grylls, one of reality TV’s biggest stars, bemoan the rapid retreat of a vast glacier.

But the episode also reveals Mr. Obama as a leader made claustrophobic by tight security, a father who is worried about appearing cool to his daughters, and a man who likes pushing through a forest and scrabbling over rocks to reach his campsite.

“I think you assume that someone with that kind of responsibility and power is somehow different from the rest of us,” Mr. Grylls said in a telephone interview on Wednesday. “So it’s surprising to see how he really is.”

I think my distaste for reality shows is pretty well understood by now, but having said that I will totally be tuning in tonight at 9:00 Alaska time to see President Obama hanging out in the Last Frontier. Or as I like refer to it, home.

Not only am I jazzed to see the show, but this gives me a chance to repost my favorite President Obama pictures of all time.

I think that President Obama should forget about going back to Chicago when he leaves office, and move here instead.

I know that the crazy lady by the dead lake might have given a bad impression, but most Alaskans are very hospitable and President Obama made quite an impression while he was here.

Or has he forgotten?

Oh Gryphen, not a reality show. It's a documentary. :)

Mildred, were you joking because SPA was a reality show that Palin spun was a "documentary show" about AK? I recall C4P members were concerned about the reality show but approved of a "documentary" about AK. My favorite part of the "documentary" was when the Gosslimgs went camping with the Palin's to keep it dignified LOL

For you folks in Alaska: That Y-U-U-U-G-E "BOOOOOOMMM" you heard during the broadcast is Sarah Failin's head exploding!!!!

What an honor it's been to be alive, to see him voted twice into office, and to see how warm and genuine a person he is. A role model for fathers everywhere. As for that thing on the dead lake, I doubt she even crosses his mind at all.
As someone who's been to Alaska a few times, the people there, for the most part, are friendly, go out of their way to give directions, or help if something goes wrong with your car. What makes Alaska great is it's diversity of cultures, the landscape and the beauty of nature. Anchorage is just like almost any city in America. Some things take some adjustment (some places are only accessible by small planes, some outhouses are way too far for comfort) I'd love to go again someday if only the lotto would cooperate.

@8:47 You have the quote wrong. The president said "She said 'he was happy to see me'"

The urban dictionary gives the following definition for splooge: Any and all ejaculatory juices that derive from the male penis.

Why you choose to be inaccurate and still phrase your comment as a correction to the original comment is a puzzle.

I just finished watching, here on the East Coast, and it was great!! We laughed out loud many times, and got to see again, what a great man our President is.

I'm sure $arah is pitching a fit over how genuine and charismatic the POTUS is- something she will NEVER be.

He's a natural to succeed in TV. He has it all: charm, looks, a sense of humor, smarts.....

Unlike Sarah Palin, who demonstrated her singular lack of leadership skills and her puerile habits in her silly little subsidized reality show. And let's not mention her foul-mouthed children and grandchildren.... ewww!

HULU has NBC so I'll check if this show is available. I don't normally watch it but I might watch *this* episode.

It was wonderful having President Obama in Alaska. He was extremely well received wherever he went within the State! He and Michelle plan to visit Alaska sometime after his second term has been completed.

It was so apparent he loved our beautiful state!

What a great guy! Would so love to meet him!

Donald Trump's doctor is right. Look how skinny and fit President Obama is compared to Big Well Filled Out (that means fat) Donald Trump. Trump must be comparing himself to Taft and Cleveland as his standard of fitness.

I, too, think Trump looks very unhealthy. I don't think he works out and he shows no muscle tone. Plus, he appears to be overweight!

Plus, look at side shots of his head/face! He gets red in the face very easily too when agitated - which is often! Doubt he'd make it through a one-term presidency! Heart attack look to me!

Here in Seattle our tv stations are over-run with reality TV shows from Alaska..Alaska roads, Alaska rednecks, Alaska this & that. I am SO sick of them since Sarah Palin ruined any curiosity I had about your state. I know a wealthy author who every year took their family of 19 on a cruise to AK from Seattle but stopped after Sarah Palin the idiot clown was exposed. Keep your glaciers Alaska. If I want to see one one of yours I will look at the pictures. Sorry but pretty much all the states that begin with the letter A I have no desire to visit ever again. Enjoy.

That's too bad. I travel from Wasilla to Seattle to see my brother every two months and I love the scenery of both places. We spend time at Rainer and many of the other mountain parks and have climbed many of the mountains there. While Seattle is too big of a city for me I suck it up because I enjoy the scenery there so much and really, one never has to go to Seattle proper since the airport is not in the city. I hate it that you let one person taint your view of Alaska; if you at all like the natural beauty of your area of the Northwest you would appreciate ours as well, Sarah Palin be damned, hell, I live a few miles away from her and don't let her ruin my day ;-)

Set her out on an iceflow,or put her in prison where she belongs and see how much better outsiders view your state. Sarah Palin, the most hated woman in America, had given Alaska a big black eye. And the reason why is because you've failed to "clean your own house". Corruption is rampant while people turn a blind eye and sit on their hands. Definitely a land of the halves, and the halve nots.

  21. Okay not to be a Grinch here so closes to Christmas, but this hike to Exit Glacier is really more of a stroll than an actual hike, and yet this Grylls guy is acting like they are breaking trail in an unknown portion of the Alaska wilderness.

    1. I never watch this show and probably never will again, but that episode was awesome. I love how the president ate bear chewed salmon and made smores even though he's not supposed to eat on camera. And he made fire and caught glacier melt to make "tea" and then drank it. The selfies were good too. All in all he was a really good sport, the climate change agenda that drove it all wasn't too sermony or aggressive.

I fear after he steps down he won't get these opportunities again so I am thrilled he was able to do this show. He looked like he was really enjoying it. I hope he gets a few more opportunities in the coming year.

Just WOW!! Quite a guy. My favorite part was when he said he's told his daughters to "be useful and be kind". That's quite a combination and really just about sums up the differences between him and the RWNJs. No need to mention names.

  26. I think he is more likely to retire in Hawaii. He has a connection with that state.

But I expect he will travel a lot not only to states in the U.S. but also around the world.

This ex-president is not going to sit on his laurels or limit himself to $150,000 speeches.

This ex-president will be more Jimmy Carter and less any Bush president you can name.
