That awkward moment when you condemn passages from the Quran, that are actually from the Bible.

Courtesy of The Friendly Atheist:

A lot of conservative Christians like to argue, as do atheists, that the Qur’an is full of barbarism and misogyny. Unlike the atheists, though, they forget that their own Bible is also full of horrific verses.

So the Dutch pranksters at Dit Is Normaal ran an experiment. They bought a Bible, but changed the cover to say it’s the Qur’an. Then they asked people to read passages and give their thoughts.

You know as far as pranks go, that was fairly brilliant.

And of course that is the point that Atheists make over and over again.

These books are FILLED with hateful, violent, misogynistic garbage like that and if you do not live in a relatively progressive society, and instead one that bases its laws and guidelines on the holy book, you are essentially surrounded by barbarism.

They should try the same thing in Texas, because in Holland people don't give a fuck about the bible, whitch explains why they don't know what's in it.

Wow, 3:05, what crawled up your ass? 2:49 said. IN Holland, people (comma added for clarity). Is the world not hateful enough, so you wanted to add some ugliness to a discussion that should be thought provoking, not pc? Happy holidays. :-(

I think you read that rather too quickly. Also, the people who live in Holland are indeed Dutch, but the country is The Netherlands (Holland is a region in The Netherlands).

"...because in Holland people don't give a fuck about the bible...."

PROVE it! Give me, and everyone else here, a link to back up your statement. And even if you CAN back it up, they seem to be living more according to what Jesus was preaching than a lot of people here!

As has been said many times here, the bible is crammed with hate and murder and violence of all sorts, including genocide and infanticide and slavery and misogyny and mental torture. What so great about that?

Oh, and there is no "t" in the word which.

Two-thirds of the primary schools in the Netherlands are either catholic or protestant.
"Don't give a fuck about the bible" is just plain wrong. Amsterdam is not the Netherlands, and if you ever visit the Netherlands and stay somewhere in the (rather extensive) Dutch bible belt, you're in for a big surprise.

You clearly don't know anything about "Holland".

I feel so embarrassed for religious people and I've felt that way ever since I was very young. Anytime someone brings it up I just have to say how embarrassed I feel for them and I just can't discuss it. It's the same way I feel around special needs individuals; I don't know what to do and I don't know how to act because we are obviously not operating on the same level of intelligence. It's just so bizarre to me, these beliefs in things that are obviously not real and it makes me really uncomfortable to be around those people.

    1. Yes, yes. To know that a person believes in all those ridiculous fairy tales, takes Biblical metaphor as literal truth makes me question their intelligence. How grown men and women can call themselves adults with "minds of their own" is preposterous. And they raise their children to be just the same? It's just not right.

How can they believe in a God that would give them an analytical brain, then tell them not to use it. Their preachers tell them it's a sin to question The Word of God. Why listen to them?

@ 2:51 PM - I can understand you feeling embarrassed for religious people but why would you feel embarrassment for special needs individuals?

4:32, I think 2:51 was saying HE/SHE was embarrassed for herself/himself, not the special needs person.

There really is no difference between the Quran and the first chapters of the Old Testament. None at all. The difference is that those who proclaim Christ, and the fake war on Christmas, never bothered to read the New Testament.

Law and Gospel, and everything they stand for never came out of Jesus' mouth.

Although I always found the teachings of Jesus (if real) to be inspired, I never could believe the old and new Testaments were a good marriage of religious beliefs. They negate each other. I was always offended by the teachings of the old testament and did not want to be a worshipper of that God. I understand why conservative Christians cannot follow Jesus. He is everything that they find offensive.

What a brilliant experiment! It's the similarities that are surprising more than the differences.

And now for a break from domestic terrorism and religious fanatacism, ......

I got a really bad vibe when Ronnie Bedtime for Bonzo Raygun was erected. The fact that Bush1 his running mate was the former head of the CIA didn't help any either.

Know why Xians love to say "my thoughts and prayers are with you"

Because it doesn't cost them anything and it's better than saying, fuck you, you're on your own. It's essentially saying the same though.

I for one have never preached hatred towards the Quran. But, what I will never hesitate to point out is that Christianity would not have come into existence had it not been for the Muslims who preserved the writings of Aristotle whose philosophy formed the basis of Christofascism as we see it today.

    Take that Sarah (and Brisdull.)

Islam and Christianity all stem from the same religion, and from Abraham. So it's not surprise there would be overlap. Christians "added" the writings of the followers of Jesus, and Muslims replaced the old testament with the Quran. There's an important difference in prophets, though. Jesus taught non violence and willingly was jailed, then killed. Mohammad refused to be captured, and instead created an army, and marched on the cities that opposed him.

While all religion is dangerous, not all are created equal. Yes, Christianity had it's horrific moment in the sun, but mostly because of the ambitions of powerful people. If you broke it down, really, you're left with a peaceful Jesus. And that enabled various denominations to break from the original church, because they can point to Jesus's life as an example, and his teachings.

The problem with Islam, is they can't do this. If you break it down, you're still left with war and conquering, and intolerance. So when ISIS acts the way it does, I don't think it's a perversion of the faith, it's the core of the faith. Even the parts about Muhammad taking young girls as wives and smashing artifacts from older cultures when he comes across them - It's what the Taliban and ISIS do. Why would they see anything wrong with that?

Another key thing, to me is, that there's been no fall of Islam. It conquered, and it pretty much stayed in place. They never lost Mecca and Medina. Jews lost their temples, their lands, their priests. Their power was transferred to the Rabbis, out of necessity, and that is a very different kind of power than a priest. Christians lost Jesus, they were practically wiped out and their leader was crucified. Later, after they did regain power and influence in the form of the Catholic Church, they broke apart in a Reformation. There were preachers everywhere who thumbed their noses up at the Pope. These ups and downs for Jews and Christians, I think, helped the religion in the long run. This hasn't happened for Islam. They still hold the same lands, still pray to Mecca, still make the yearly Haij, still have strict laws and customs, and are still at war with other sects in and out of Islam.

So....I think it's a problem. This is why the Arab spring failed, because of the culture and religion, and while I have no doubt that eventually, the civilized world will absorb Islam....I think there's going to be a lot of bloodshed before that happens.
