Shouts of “U.S.A.!” and “Obama!” echoed over the stone plazas as President Obama and his family made their way around rain-slicked courtyards in Old Havana on Sunday evening, savoring the adulation of Cubans welcoming him warmly despite a driving rain as he began a history-making visit.
“Welcome to Cuba! We like you!” a man shouted as Mr. Obama’s entourage passed. Above, a woman applauded and hooted from her wrought-iron balcony.
Later, a motorcade including the presidential limousine, adorned for the first time with Cuban and American flags, snaked through narrow streets where elated residents, their clothing soaked from waiting in the rain, hoisted cellphones and cheered the first sitting American leader to set foot on Cuban soil in 88 years.
Okay so just how many history making, landmark decisions is that for this President so far in his two terms?
Ended our two unnecessary wars, killed Osama Bin Laden, repealed DADT, saved the US auto industry, brought healthcare to millions of uninsured Americans, saved the economy, and that was only in his first term.
The next time that somebody offers there opinion that this is a failed President, just go right ahead and laugh in their face.
Because that really is the only appropriate response.
Restoring USA relations with Cuba was such a common sense thing to do. I'm loving the Obamas trip there and can't wait until I can pick up some Cuban rum at my local market.
ReplyDeleteWonderful! Never thought I'd see this in my lifetime.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos at www.theobamadiary.com
Nothing but good happenings can come from this visit. Such lessons in this presidency for all future aspirants; I hope time will run over the likes of Trump, Cruz, and Palin with a big Mack truck.
ReplyDeleteAnd that lovely man held an umbrella for his wife.
ReplyDeleteI know, I know, Tawd holds his wife's purse.
But don't you think the umbrella is just classier?
I think it's obvious that the president and his wife enjoy being close to each other whenever possible.
DeleteDarn. You know what they say about Lame Duck office holders.
ReplyDeleteMight as well just quit early since you can't accomplish a thing.
50 years ago here is what I was watching on the nightly news:
ReplyDeleteSome people decided to march from Selma to Montgomery Alabama. Some other people decided they would not allow that.

We have traveled down that highway since 1965, be we have not yet arrived.
Don't think Obama accomplished that much? Here is an excellent site to visit to see all of the good things that he has done during his presidency. Everything is cited, so you have proof when you're crazy Republican friends and relatives deny it.

Considering the obstructionist congress that he had to deal with, his list of accomplishments is nothing short of amazing!
Thanks for this link. I'm forwarding it to all my relatives!
DeleteThe wackos in my family would just look at it as proof that Obama overstepped his power.
DeletePolitico has a great article "How Obama set a trap for Raul Castro."

Noting that Calvin Coolidge, the last sitting president to visit the island nation, in 1928, had arrived on a battleship after a three-day journey, Mr. Obama remarked, “It only took me three hours.”
ReplyDeleteMr. Obama thanked embassy personnel who had brought young children to the ceremony. “By the time they’re adults,” he said, “our hope is that they think it’s natural that a U.S. president should be visiting Cuba, and they think it’s natural that the two peoples are working together.”

ReplyDeleteOnly downside of all this is that my Canadian friends are unhappy that their favourite get-away place will be swarming with Americans next winter. I have quite a collection of Cuban souvenirs from my Canadian friends' trips. Now, I can join them on their holidays and I get to bring back kitchy souvenirs from Cuba.
ReplyDeleteI was just marveling at this sight, seeing an American president walking through old town Havana, walking. And we (hubby and I) that he's probably safer there out in the open, than in many, many US cities. And that's so sad.
ReplyDelete"Their opinion" not "there opinion" - I volunteer my services as a grammar/spelling nazi. :)
ReplyDeleteI was glued to the tv watching history being made, thought I heard popcorn, but it was the GOP heads exploding. What was with the awkward arm shake Obama got from Raul?
ReplyDeleteThey had a "feel good" segment, this reporter left cuba for florida, but his parents couldn't make the trip, his mom wrapped the key to the door and hid it on a ledge. He spent awhile trying to get his bearings, found the house, and spoke to the new owners, and yes, the key was still where she left it. Made my eyeballs sweat for awhile.
I love that Michelle's mom went with them.
ReplyDeleteI'm reading on Facebook that rightwingnuts are now convinced that President Obama is a COMMUNIST!
ReplyDeleteI mean, why ELSE would he visit Cuba and try to usher in CAPITALISTIC trade with them?
I don't know how these people find their MOUTHS when they try to eat. (I'm picturing a lot of spoons bonking into foreheads.)
Lots of hawks who wish it had not happened and that Cuba continue to be punished and ignored forever, because that sort of thing works so well. So what if Castro acts like an ass? Change is going to come.
