Did Laura Bush hint that she would vote for Hillary over Donald Trump or Ted Cruz in the 2016 election? Maybe.

Courtesy of the Washington Times:

Former first lady Laura Bush hinted this week that she would rather see Hillary Clinton in the Oval Office than Donald Trump, saying she wants the next president to be someone who cares about women in Afghanistan.

“I want our next president — whoever he or she might be — to be somebody who is interested in women in Afghanistan and who will continue U.S. policies … that we continue to do what we’re committed to do as a country,” Mrs. Bush said during the annual Women in the World summit in New York, according to the Telegraph.

“That’s who I want — or the kind of people that will do that and will pay attention to our history, and know what’s happened before and know specifically how we can continue to do the good things that we do around the world,” Mrs. Bush added.

I have a feeling that a WHOLE LOT of Republican women will vote for Hillary Clinton over Ted Cruz or Donald Trump if those are there only choices.

And seriously, who can blame them?

They're all in bed with each other.

I have yet to see her roll up her sleeves and do jack. Leave it the "little people," right Laura?

"...saying she wants the next president to be someone who cares about women in Afghanistan."

I would hope that Mrs. Bush also wants the next president to be someone who also cares about women in the United States!

It is appalling in this day and age the regressive tactics the Republicans are spouting and legislating against women and their reproductive rights, and their less-than-equal-earnings status.

Yes Mrs. Bush, you better be concerned about the treatment of women in the U.S. too.

Very good point. I don't have any respect for any of the Bush women. They are complicit in the GOP's efforts to make women second class citizens.

Great point. Remember, she lives in regressive Texas, and I don;t recall her speaking out about the abominable treatment of Wendy Davis, not the closing of all the clinics that help poor women in her state.

Personally I can't see how any human could possibly want to stay married to a person like W Bush.

The man had no redeeming qualities.

    4. Anon 7:55, who knows how much time W and Laura spend together, if any?

They've got their, ahem, "ranch" in Crawford, and a big expensive house in Dallas.

Holidays and the occasional photo-op, mayhap?

I'm just glad they're no longer living in my town.

I would hope you're right Gryphen but I'll have to see it to believe it. Subservience to men is so deeply ingrained in Republican culture, it will be hard to overcome. If there were two "Trumps" to overcome, it might be easier but so many religious fanatics believe that Ted Cruz is being "called" to the presidency. These people often believe that God determines who should be President. Just look at Sarah's attitude during 2008.

I was thinking about women's rights when I woke up and was getting ready for work. The tide is slowly changing and women are definitely gaining ground in the fight to be seen as a man's equal. More and more mothers are able to work without judgment or being called neglectful. Personally, I believe mothers who work full time are the most exceptional. They work 8 hours then come home and do everything a SAH parent had 8 hours to do. They do everything for their kids AND provide.
I've also noticed more and more married folk are bucking tradition regarding last names. There are more men taking their wives names and more kids have hyphenated names, or a kid's middle name is a parent's last name.
This is wonderful. A child should always be reminded they are the product of two people. It's good to see "the family name" becoming obsolete in a world where 99% of families are blended.

This bodes well for gay couples especially.

May women continue to be strong and make sure their kids know and have pride for their family alongside the father's.

It takes a controlling man to refuse to reform his thinking and leave behind patriarchy. A real man should want his children to have a nominal piece of their mother's family.

Got it. The when the kid, say, Johnston-Palin gets married, his wife will be known as Mrs. Smith Johnston-Palin, and their kids as the Smith-Johnston-Palins, and when THEY marry the female will be Jones- Smith -Johnston-Palin...do you see how unworkable this is? My kids went to school with some kids saddled with TWO three syllable last names-I also wondered what the girl did when she married. I get your point, but it only works for the first generation. Then it is another burden to bear...for the females.

    2. @4:29--I do not disagree with working moms can be amazing, but they do not do everything that a SAHM does during the day. Part of what a SAHM does is 'be' with their children and care for those children. If a parent is not physically 'there', someone else has to do it. If you are simply talking about housework, then okay. You are probably correct.
@6:13--I agree on the name thing. My niece married a young man with a hyphenated name. The child's name is one heck of a long one with her last name and his last name.

4:29 there is so much more to focus on giving your children than a hyphenated name.

Personally I think women's rights are about letting the individual woman choose what is right for her. Though I do encourage women to get an education or skill set that would allow them to be financially okay if they need to support their children and themselves on their income. Financial independence can keep women out of poverty and give them freedom to leave a marriage if it is abusive( or just done) much easier.

Well you know the Bushes and the Clintons are likethis. W would probably vote for Hillary too. He could count on her to continue enabling Israel at the expense of the rest of the Middle East (not to mention the U.S. and Europe), and usher in the WW III his rapturous fundie heart so desires. Of course he could count on Ted Cruz for that too. But he doesn't consider Ted to be his sister-in-law. Like he does Hillary.

As the world turns, we are evolving into earthlings, not Americans, Germans, Mexicans, etc. 50 years from now or less we will be a global family. Our economy is global already. Each country's action can affect another country.

Today at the recycling center in Alaska, I learned the glass from old picture tube televisions is bought from a glass blower in Europe. Subaru's manufacturing plant is in Indiana, they purchase metal, glass, rubber, etc from U.S. companies but the transmissions and engines are shipped from Japan. Airplane parts are made in different parts of the world, as well as computer parts, etc.

Any president we elect needs to have the ability to navigate us through a global society or we will be a third world country. Medicine, technology, science are shared internationally. Air space is shared. We are global. Helping other countries helps us. We are neighbors.

  11. For the life of me, I can not understand how a woman can call herself a Republican. Everything changed in my life when I became a mother. I had been the ultimate Feminist-with-a-cause (attended CU Boulder the year of the "Divest in South Africa" thingy and didn't eat meat until I'd listened to too much Jimmy Buffett) until I became a mother. And not to get all politically correct, or not if that is the case, but we as a gender are wired differently. Someone needs to nurture. Don't flame me or troll me or say mean things. I have 3 college degrees, 2 of which are professional and give me many letters after my name. Now I am a stay-at-home mom and I homeschool my 9 year old daughter (NOT because of crazy, wacko religious views, but because the closest school is 40 miles away and the road just getting to the highway is treacherous).
    Geez, that was a tirade.
    Sorry.
What I wanted to say was Yay Laura Bush! And I would hope that many, many, many other Republican women come to their senses and realize that, yes, this can be a sexist world, and yes, we have our roles to play in it (see above, nurturing, etc), but it would be wise to not pick a misogynistic, bullying bastard to lead this nation.
Help Afghanistan women? How about women here? You think Donald Trump or Ted Cruz gives a rat's patootie about women around the world?
    Yikes, I better stop.

Has Laura Bush espoused any causes since leaving the White House in January 2009? She could certainly join with the current Michelle Obama and work towards helping girls around the world get educational opportunities. She could also join with both Michelle Obama and Jill Biden to help military families dealing with parents on foreign tours. It would be good to see that the ugly partisanship of the GOP does not carry over to the wives of politicians. Maybe that's just too much to ask for though.

She has always been a Democrat, only voting Republican when a family member is in the race, but it was widely known throughout her husband's administration that she quietly disagreed with their ideas. She is a quiet person and old-fashioned in her spousal support, but she never changed her opinions.
