Bernie Sanders honoring the fallen on Memorial Day in his own unique fashion.

Now when this picture started making the rounds yesterday it received quite a bit of mocking on the internet, but the Bernie supporters were quick with an explanation.

He was praying.

However as we know Sanders is not a very religious fellow, and he appears to be the only one whose head is bowed in prayer in this photo, so that sort of failed the smell test.

Well he is 74 years old after all.

In other news Howard Dean wants Sanders to stop giving his supporters false hope:

HOWARD DEAN: I think this a problem, I wish he would stop doing this. We have a streak of him -- he never quits, he is a tough guy, obivously we admire that in a politician. But this attempt to undo the rules, this business in CA of trying to get a federal judge to extend the registration.

First of all, they are changing the rules after the fact, second of all, they are not going to happen. So he is giving his supporters false hope that somehow this is going to change, this is all going to work out [for Bernie]. This is not what he needs to be doing at this particular time.

I can only imagine the profound disappointment that the Sanders supporters are going to experience when it finally dawns on them that Bernie is not Santa Claus and cannot magically give them everything that he promised during his campaign.

That is of course if he can stay awake long enough to disappoint them.

74 years old Sanders fell asleep during a Memorial Day Celebration!

What's going to happen when 75 year old Bernie Sanders is attending National Security meetings and an ISIS security meetings? Does everybody stop so 76 year old Bernie Sanders can drink his warm milk, eat his cookies and take his two hour nap?

7:20am - I am a long time IM reader - since Sarah Palin came on the scene and used to enjoy the writing here, but am not impressed with the one sidedness that G. is displaying. And 7:21am, I don't see the President travelling from state to state day after day. Of course the pace would lessen.

Meghan@7:20. I discovered IM shortly after Sarah Palin's nomination for VP. It's the first blog I read every morning - or if I wake up at 3am and can't go back to sleep. I have been stunned and apalled by the dealings of the Palins and their supporters, and I'm patiently waiting for the day her house of cards finally falls, and she's revealed for the lawless liar that she is.

I am still on the Bernie bandwagon for good reasons. The more Hillary can be dragged toward the left of center, the better. Keeping Bernie in the mix may force her to choose Elizabeth Warren or Bernie himself as a running mate instead of a more traditional and corporate owned politician. I'm in California, and I really feel like I should get to cast my vote in the primary without being berated for not abondoning ship and signing up to volunteer for Clinton.

There's more to "the pace" than travelling from one state to another. This person is UNCLEAR ON THE CONCEPT of what it means to be President!

    9. Anonymous8:32 AM

The travel pace lessens a little bit but the stress factor ratchets up 1000% or more. That can take more out of a person than you know. Just look at EVERY modern president's before and after picture and you will see the proof if you think I am blowing smoke up your ass. If Sanders can't handle a campaign how in the fuck is he going to handle a presidency.
Hint, he can't and he won't.

Per weekly standard, trump stated his personal Viet nam was avoiding venereal disease in the 80s.

He was here for rolling thunder and expressed disappointment that his audience was not like MLKs in terms of size. He said that people were oppressed from attending.

"Yikes - maybe he is praying? #ImWithHer and/but don't think Bernie closing his eyes at a memorial service negates his good works for veterans and military families. As Hillary often reminds us, #LoveTrumpsHate ."

Instead of promoting your candidate, your blog is daily vilification of Sanders and his supporters. You post a still picture taken on the sly at an official Memorial Day service of Sanders looking down, which he famously does when he's listening: watch his latest interview with Bill Maher. Like the "they're throwing chairs" tweet, Dunning's assertion that Sanders was sleeping is uncorroborated anywhere.

The disrespect shown by taking the picture during a somber event and the mean-spiritedness with which Dunning posted it and with which you've chosen to spread it is a shameful reflection on Clinton and her supporters. You, like Dunning, should let what Pelosi's saying sink in then take it down.

Hillary has a host of negatives and she and Bill "built the neoliberal wing of the party" --which doesn't represent the party's traditional base. The Clinton wing of the party sold out the working and middle class to globalization and the financial sector that funded the "New Democrats" from the 1980s onward. As a result millions of Dem. progressive votes were lost, as well as those of progressive independents. Bernie has those voters now along with other Dems tired of the corruption and business as usual at the top.

For those interested in a more substantive political analysis of the reality facing the party:

      http://www.huffingtonpost.com/seth-abramson/how-to-explain-the-sanders_b_10206250.html

" The Democratic Party has never, in modern history, run a candidate with an unfavorable rating as high as Mrs. Clinton’s; it has never, in modern history, run a candidate who was currently under FBI investigation; it has never, in modern history, run a candidate who will (per polling reported by Nate Cohn) not receive the support of fully 50 percent of her opponent’s supporters, under circumstances in which her opponent has commanded nearly 45 percent of the popular vote; it has never successfully run a candidate for President who previously lost a Party primary, which loss suggested now-evident infirmities in that candidate’s appeal even to Democratic voters; it has never run a candidate who secured only 50 percent of the pledged delegates in the final two-thirds of Party nominating contests; it has never run a candidate whose only consequential primary challenger came from outside the Party, due to her cynical strategy of intimidating other qualified Democrats away from running using a massive pre-election superdelegate lead; it has never, in what is at once predicted to be a “movement” and “base” election, successfully run a candidate for President who neither has broad support from the Party’s progressive wing nor is at the head of any identifiable political movement; and it has never nominated for President a candidate losing in national polls, at the time of her media-driven elevation to the status of “presumptive nominee,” to a clinical sociopath; for these and other reasons, Sanders plans to continue his campaign in the hope of saving Democratic elders from their slavish devotion to a political dynasty that’s turned the Party from its New Deal roots toward a neoliberal corporatism now destroying the middle class."

10:59 I agree that it appears to be different moments. However, there are none in the photographer's hundred or so photos that show the moment in the Twitter photo.

In the Twitter photo, Bernie's head is clearly canted to his right and down low. None like that on the photo page.

And, yes, there are some showing him reading his paper with his head down low. However, there are several with his hands folded in front with his head down low. Right after those he starts looking around. Made me think of times when you fall asleep accidentally and wake up suddenly and need to look around to see what you missed.

This could be a toss up. Without third source it's hard to tell.

But, yes, if Hillary or Obama had appeared asleep at a big event it would be splashed everywhere, so get over it you Bernie fans.

If he cannot take the heat, he should get out of the kitchen.

We have never seen President Obama 'nod off' in any of the events he's attended during these years he's served as POTUS.

He has one hectic schedule and always moves quickly when crossing a stage, going up the steps to his jet, etc.

I know he's younger, but we also know that he exercises daily which assists in keeping him in excellent health and more able to deal with the pressures he experiences, with the job, on a daily basis.

Donald Trump doesn't move well across a stage, is obese, is lumbering in movement if you watch him walk and doesn't appear to exercise at all!

Bernie is an old man and has been keeping one hectic schedule which would cause him to fall asleep on stage. Plus, I'm sure he is eating on the run which probably isn't helpful to him either - especially at his age!

Older people don't mince words. If I sat through ceremonies I would be comatose. Plus he's old. Plus he's running from state to state on a young man's agenda. Any one of the candidates are old. Donald is old. Hilary is old. Bernie is old. It's the weirdest election year ever. All the young uns were takin' out one by one by Trump. Seems like people are trusting the wisdom of the old. We just have to prop them up and whisper out their lines when the time comes. Either way we get grandma and grandpas ruling our country come November. And I don't believe any of them are saviors. They just spew rhetoric. It's a typical political maneuver. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Big business backs these puppets, and we the people are fed ideology and digesting everything sent our way. The fact is if we want change we have to work together. If that doesn't happen we get gridlock. After gridlock there's nothing. Just trying to outlast the other fellow. Or punch his face.

Fuck you, both myself and my husband along with hundreds of other old people sat up straight and paid attention and somehow managed to stay awake during the very large Memorial Day service we attended yesterday. If Bernie is too old to stay awake and show minimal respect he doesn't need to be CIC.

Funny that Hillary managed to stay awake and alert when questioned for hours during the Benghazi! Marathon, being that she is SO VERY OLD and such.

My grandfather often looked that way after Sunday dinner. Rest easy, Bernie. Only a week or so left and, if you play it right, you can go back to Vermont and relax. Windmills are soon out-of-season for you.

I'm still wondering what the heck Trump did all day Memorial Day. He couldn't wait to get in front of a mic today to do a job anyone on his staff could have done re the money raised and distributed to the misc vets' organizations. But yesterday he was nowhere to be found. He had an early tweet and then went silent for the day until evening. I never saw a thing online or on the news about what he actually did do. After that DC rally, I guess he just slept in and ate some steak on the BBQ and pigged out and watched some TV or something. I saw nothing of any Trump sightings, and he certainly didn't go to any events for our lost vets.

I thought Trump appeared with the biker groups in D.C.? Didn't quite understand his connection to them as many are and were Vietnam vets (and Trump got deferments five times to avoid that specific war!).

I'm surprised they didn't grab him and drag him from behind one of their bikes through the streets of D.C.

What is wrong with Americans? They obviously are not informed when it comes to The Donald! The guy is a liar and fraud and it can be proven daily!

    Shady accounting underpins Trump’s wealth

Donald Trump claims a net worth of more than $10 billion and an income of $557 million. But he appears to get there only by overvaluing properties and ignoring his expenses.

POLITICO spoke with more than a dozen financial experts and Trump’s fellow multimillionaires about the presumptive Republican nominee’s financial statement. Their conclusion: The real estate magnate’s bottom line — what he actually puts in his own pocket — could be much lower than he suggests. Some financial analysts said this, and a very low tax rate, is why Trump won’t release his tax returns.

“I know Donald, I’ve known him a long time, and it gets under his skin if you start writing about the reasons he won’t disclose his returns,” said one prominent hedge fund manager who declined to be identified by name so as not to draw Trump’s ire. “You would see that he doesn’t have the money that he claims to have and he’s not paying much of anything in taxes.”

While I no longer support Sanders, I wish he had quit when he was still perceived as strong. He has clung to the limelight too long. This will hurt him very much. The optics are terrible. I don't think he deserves to go out like this. But he brought it on himself.

Be assured, he will not be elected POTUS. Liked him in the beginning of his run, but don't anymore.

It's time he goes back to his small state and actually does something for them as he continues to serve in the U.S. Congress. I doubt he'll be reelected to that position either!

Is anyone else as skeptical of these Republican polls as I am? The media and Republicans are constantly siting polls indicating Hillary's downfall.

Remember, it was the same constant hype with Barack Obama and then President Obama in the last two elections! They were so, so wrong and Barack Obama won in landslides both times!

Hillary Clinton will be the winner for 2017! President Obama will begin campaigning for her soon with his approval ratings now exceeding 50%! That is a win, win, win!

She will have my vote in November and I look forward to casting it for her!

I'm with Hillary because she most closely reflects my values and issues. I don't care if Bernie was praying, sleeping, meditating or examining the inside of his eyelids. All I'm concerned about is getting the Democrats act together, stop this divisiveness, and get our platform solid, GOTV and make sure Trump doesn't buy his way into the white house. Free sounds wonderful, especially free college, but I wanna know where all that money's coming from. Gryphen has just as much a right to his opinion as everyone else does, he does a Hillary or Bernie post, and everyone's at each other's throats. We're acting like the GOP, which is exactly what they want.
