Democratic convention host warns Sanders supporters to "behave themselves" once he loses the nomination.

Courtesy of The Hill:

The chairman of the Philadelphia 2016 Host Committee for this summer’s Democratic National Convention said supporters of presidential candidate Bernie Sanders have to “behave themselves” when the Vermont senator loses the nomination.

During a radio interview with John Catsimatidis, Ed Rendell, a former Pennsylvania governor and Democratic National Committee chairman, laid out his vision for how the convention would play out.

“I think it’s gonna be a great convention, but of course the key to it is the Sanders people. Bernie’s gonna have his name placed in nomination; we’re gonna have a roll call; there’s gonna be a demonstration in support of Bernie; he’s gonna lose the roll call,” he said. “His supporters have to behave and not cause trouble. And I think they will, and I think Sen. Sanders will send them a strong message.”

I like how Rendell does not even bother to pay lip service to the possibility that Sanders might win the nomination. Just a simple "He's gonna lose the roll call" now don't be dicks about it.

Nobody knows how this will play out. The best case scenario is for Sanders to motive his supporters behind Hillary Clinton defeating Trump. Sanders' platform should be part of the democrats' overall platform.

Maybe you have never been to a nat'l convention, but it's not about the candidates platform. Platforms are developed and voted on from meetings all over the country and voted on to see which supported changes are brought to the nat'l convention where the delegates from every state/voting district vote on those proposed changes. The convention isn't about presidential candidates getting their way and that goes for Bernie like every other Democratic presidential candidate that there has ever been.
So no, it's not about Bernie's platform, it's about the platform that delegates are bringing to the table from all over this nation.
I would suggest that anyone who is new to the Democratic NC ( and that includes Bernie) read the Roberts Rules of Order if they expect their voice to be heard it will be done in the proper manner or they will be removed quite quickly.
Philly should be very fun this summer and it's not my first rodeo, but for those that it is should be well aware about the process before proceeding.
BTW I have seen ideas come from caucuses in towns as small as a hundred people be brought up through the process to the nat'l convention, now that is truly democracy in action.
Now if Bernie wanted his ideas brought up then he should have been involved in the Democratic party process starting in his own voting district and all the way up into the nat'l convention.
Bernie Sanders does not have a voice at the convention, if Bernie wanted a voice then he should have come up through the process to be a delegate himself. Delegates are the ones that propose changes and vote on changes. It is quite an orderly ( and admittedly sometimes boring process-- I'm probably the weirdo for loving the process myself. But votes from delegates is the ONLY way the party platform changes, not from old men having tantrums.

      That's the best case scenario?

How about Hillary gets indicted before the convention to avoid all this mess. That is an even better scenario.

Hillary will not win the general.

Yes he is, and he will have one vote just like me at the convention. And if he wanted any platform changes he should have attended to party business for the last FOUR YEARS like the rest of us. He isn't anything special, he has one vote, platform changes are developed over FOUR YEARS and voted on at the nat'l convention. If Bernie wanted his ideas to be added to the platform they would have had to have been presented and voted on at many other levels in the LAST $ YEARS to be brought up at the DNC in 2016. Apparently most of what I said went directly over your head and that the rules in place the rest of us follow are for Bernie to follow also. By joining the Democratic Party last yr does not give Bernie Sanders dictator rights to the party.

Many would have never been involved in the political process without Bernie, they never voted. We will not vote for Hillary, some will vote for Jill Stein and some will write Bernie in while others won't vote. Many are planning to go to the convention and there will be protesting. That is a right that should be protected. #BernieOrBust #DropOutHIllary

"Sanders' supporters will be brought to heel."

Consider the source. Since leaving elected life, Ed Rendell has made his living from Wall Street and the fossil fuel industry. Sanders' agenda threatens Rendell's livelihood.

In Feb 2011 "Rendell took up a position as Senior Advisor at boutique investment bank Greenhill & Co... Also in 2011, Rendell reportedly acted as a go-between for Range Resources Corp, an oil and gas exploration and production company, and then United States EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson, regarding a Texas water contamination case; and has been a vocal proponent of shale gas extraction as part of a United States energy strategy."

I don't think so. We want Bernie as President or right in the senate where he can do good. Vice President has no power he can't make policy. If he would do that, lots of Bernie supporters still will not vote for her. She is everything we are against. Money, bribes in government, money, laundering accounts out of this country. War hawk, courting wall street. Everything for the rich and Israel, and nothing for us. We can give them everything at a drop of the hat. The lying, cheating the voter purging losing votes changing of peoples votes.
Outright cheating everywhere If this does not bother you , you are part of the problem. We are not in it just to elect Bernie we are in it, to change the all this corruption. Bernie has woke us up, that we have to do something or it will be too late. We are in it for us, our children and grandchildren. Sorry if that offends you. That person would have emerged and taken over Sanders' platform in time to be on the ballot in the various states. Look it up.

Bernie Sanders has no right to claim the vice presidency. Where has he been all of these years? In recent decades, the presidential candidate gets to choose his/her running mate. We've had almost eight yeas with the perfect pairing: President Obama and Vice President Biden. They like and respect each other, agree on policy matters and work well with one another. They're adults. I cannot imagine Bernie Sanders working well with anyone, except, perhaps, Jane Sanders. But Hillary Clinton, if she's the nominee, should not be fettered with an uncompromising, unpleasant and grumpy old man.

@CeliaHarrison Bernie doesn't have anything to do with the DNC? You obviously know nothing about him despite being a supporter. He's attended fundraisers, given speeches, and taken money from the DNC raised by these fundraisers w/Wall St. execs. The DNC was Bernie's biggest donor to his Senate campaign. Where did the money come from? Wall St. Or do you think it's magically cleansed because it wasn't handed directly to him from a Wall St. exec? Bernie claims to be worth only $300k yet he owns two homes worth over $1M, with a mortgage of only $70k on the D.C. condo. They just sold Jane's mother's condo last year that hey had owned for years, receiving rental incomes from it. So someone with 3 homes sounds like one of the poor to you? The fiscally challenged that he claims to represent? He's a member of the D.C. establishment, having been there for 25 years and he had to play the games to get along and remain there. His past is filled with crap the GOP would use against him.

Of course, you come here and spew your b.s. but you don't allow any comments on your blog that disagree with you. What are you afraid of?! Finding out who the real Bernie Sanders is?

I agree 100%. The Democratic Party will become a victim of its own success. We've made great gains on civil rights for minorities, gays, etc. So now as the population of the persecuted group on the cause celebre du jour gets smaller and smaller, it will get tougher for people to remain distracted by it.
Take transgendered people--the kerfuffle over bathrooms affects so few people that while people have opinions on what is right, I think its implications are more academic than practical for most people and while people are in favor of social justice, if they're voting for their own best interests, these issues are becoming only marginally relevant.

Ultimately, the oligarchs who are controlling the Democratic Party for financial gains are going to be out of social issues used to distract people. At that point, can they prevent a revolution?

Ed Rendell sounds like another "limousine liberal" or now called neoliberal:

On Salon.com today: Hillary is Trump’s dream opponent: Clinton is exactly the “limousine [neo] liberal” his coalition distrusts the most

Trump scares too many voters to actually win. But he's facing an opponent who encapsulates what got him this far.

"Bernie Sanders has been a beneficiary from the left of the same disenchantment with the bipartisan neo-liberal establishment. But he’s trusted to say what he means to do, which is probably why he consistently outdoes Clinton in defeating all Republican opponents."

"Limousine liberals are history’s oxymoron, elites that undermine the status quo rather than defend it. Ironically the term was first used by a Democrat running for mayor in New York in 1969 to chastise his opponent, the sitting Mayor John Lindsay, who was indeed to the manner born, Yale educated, raised on Park Avenue, a high Episcopalian, once employed at a white shoe law firm, and, although a Republican, a proponent of civil rights reform, school busing, police review boards, and the War on Poverty and against that other war being waged in Vietnam.

"Limousine liberals would be treated thereafter as champions of reform and upheaval as long as it didn’t inconvenience them. They stood up for the (black) poor but had no intention of bearing the cost of doing anything about their plight.

"Not about to change the way they lived, they wanted everybody else to change, to have their kids bused to school, to shoulder the tax burden, to watch the racial and social make-up of their neighborhoods turned upside down, all the while safe in their exclusive neighborhoods, shipping their children off to private schools, sheltering their capital gains and dividends from the taxman, morally dissolute and irreverent, getting around town in limousines not subway cars."

(Why Hillary had to be seen using one, not easily it turned out and the photo of her stricken face viewing a tiny senior apartment were classic "to the manor born" attitudes of the limo libs.)

Bernie Sanders obviously paid no attention at all to national politics prior to sometime in 2015 when he decided to use the Democratic Party as a convenient vehicle for his independent run for the presidency. One would think that Sanders would at least have been willing to learn the rules and agree to abide by them.

And no, the Obama administration is not a "status quo capitalist government" run by "entitles-acting neo-liberals." President Obama won two highly contested presidential campaigns and defeated John McCain and Mitt Romney. Wow, when people become Sanders' supporters they seem to forget history and forego the real world.

(I'm sure as DA he was "out of the loop")

Philadelphia was given the sobriquet "The City that Bombed Itself."

As of April 2016, no other American police department has dropped a bomb on its citizens.

Remind me next time I see Ed in Dino's Casa of Beauty on Locust Street getting his nose and ear hairs plucked and his hair did (shampoo, dyed and cut) to be a little more tactful in silencing protesters.

Well, you're wrong. No one 'bought and paid for' anyone. And if the supers supported her BEFORE St. Bernie decided to become a Democrat to run against her, who's fault is that? He wasn't in the race. He is not a Democrat. Either get your facts straight or please, stay home. Frankly, I'd rather that Democratic super delegates commit to a Democrat.

Voting out of anger? Do what you want. If you really buy into the Hillary smears, and lefty paranoia over "purity," face other facts, too. Bernie voted for war in Iraq in 1998 and also for war in Libya. This is the 21st century; no one is "pure."

Gain a super delegate for a primary, and alienate and lose the public in the general.

      Real winning strategy there Sally.

Good to see the posts today: thought this site was becoming as rabid (and non-thinking) pro-H as the pro-T teams. Can't even put my name to these anymore, but see there are still a few of us out there who want Democrats to be progressive. Rendell is wrong.

Electing a woman is progressive. What planet do you live on?

12:42 is the perfect example of the worst kind of voter in this country. Voting for someone purely on gender, because progressive and all. You are the worst. Try some priorities and responsibility when voting.

1:20 - you, sir, are sexist--and unable to make any point without belittling others. Voters do not like your bullying.

His sense of entitlement to belittle people that aren't jumping on the "Coronation of Queen Hillary" is bullshit.

The dissing of Sanders and his supporters is why they are all hopped up. If Clinton is such a shoe in against Trump, any protest by Sanders supporters should not be a problem and no better time to voice their disgust with the party.

Nope, it's not a chicken-and-egg thing. Sanders fans have alienated everyone else from the very beginning. That's why Sanders gets no respect. Sanders is too weak to do anything and Mrs Sanders enjoys the reward$. Neither of them should be in public life. Go back to the pond.

  19. If Bernie had not run as a Democrat much less truth would have been revealed about the process, the voter fraud, the lies and the corruption. All the passionate people who never participate in the election process who are looking at how corrupt the system is would not be pushing for change nor would they even be voting. If he had not run as a Democrat how else would he help to reform the party from the inside out? By running with an established party getting small donations from regular citizens while his opponent gets millions from the 1% he contrasts ethical donations with corrupt ones showing that the system can be changed and a candidate could run purely as a candidate for the people. Bernie did not have to hire people on the internet to correct BS, we are all as real as hell.

Bernie Sanders is this a threat against Secretary Hillary Clinton?

So many things. She could have health issues. She could not get the nomination.

  21. Because Bernie supporters haven't been subjected to enough insults, disrespect and condescension.

I wouldn't even bother to attend the convention. It's obviously a 'boys club'. They've only replaced the R with a D.

Huge difference between what a supporter says versus what the candidate says -- Hillary herself suggested that she ought to stay in the race against Obama because Kennedy was assassinated in June.

Hillary Clinton today cited the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy during the 1968 presidential campaign to explain why she was remaining in the race despite long odds.

"We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California," Clinton told the editorial board of a South Dakota newspaper. " I don't understand it," Clinton added, alluding to the calls for her to quit.
