Courtesy of the Washington Post:
When Sen. Bernie Sanders, the now-vanquished Democratic presidential candidate, returns to Capitol Hill to vote Monday, he is expected to be accompanied by his constant traveling companions from the campaign trail: the U.S. Secret Service.
Although Hillary Clinton has clinched the party’s nomination, Sanders retains one of the trappings of a top-notch candidate. A team of agents still guards him at his home, where they’ve constructed a small watch station on the property. They travel with him on commercial and charter flights and use a motorcade to whisk him through cities he visits. And they recently marched alongside him during a gay-pride event here in his home town after the Orlando shootings.
Such round-the-clock protection can cost taxpayers more than $38,000 a day. And with the potential for the Secret Service to be watching over Sanders through the Democratic convention in Philadelphia five weeks from now, the taxpayers may get stuck with a big security bill long after his campaign receded from the daily cable-news cycle.
So much for representing the middle class and fighting to save the taxpayers money, right Bern?
And let's face it NOBODY is going to harm Bernie Sanders. They don't care enough about him.
He is currently an old man, surrounded by the ruins of a failed campaign, who simply refuses to give up the perks of being a national celebrity.
Man I can hardly wait to see how the Bernie-bots are going to spin THIS one.
No Bueno. If there is no way for him to win the nomination then SS needs to be discontinued. He may choose to go on till the convention on his own, his choice, but without Secret Service. Guess he's not as concerned about spending and special entitlements as he perpetually screeches about.
ReplyDeleteJane isn't going to give anything up until she has to. I can hardly wait until the convention when they lose all the extras Baby Jane loves so much. I hope they remember to schedule a way back to Vermont or maybe the NRA is doing that for their puppet Bernie.
ReplyDeleteSpouse only gets 120 days.
Deletehttp://www.secretservice.gov/about/faqs/
Title 18 U.S.C.' 3056(a)(7) states that the U.S. Secret Service is also authroized to protect spouses of major Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates, as identified by the DHS Secretary, within 120 days of the general Presidential election.
@anon 5:30pm
Deleteso do you think the SS vanishes when Baby Jane travels with the old goat?
@5:53
DeleteThinking is clearly not your strong suit.
120 days until the general election? So, that means she'll be covered during the convention. So, that rule is meaningless here, considering Bernie is dragging this out.
DeleteI'm sorry to see to you picked this story up from WaPo. It seems kind of trivial to me. I wish he wouldn't, but Bernie is entitled to take his votes and his delegates all the way to the convention if he wants to. And, in this day and age (i.e., since at least 1963) he should get Secret Service protection as long as he does.
ReplyDeleteWhat does he or we gain at this point?
DeleteA voice 4:56, which we are all entitled to, despite Griff thinking that only his counts.
DeleteThis is how it works and it's how it has always worked. How dare any of you think you can say otherwise.
@anon 6:58pm
DeleteNo, you are not entitled to a voice on Gryphen's blog, unless he grants it to you. Now, if you are displeased with Gryphen's blog you can go elsewhere or even start your own blog.
Anonymous6:58 PM,
DeleteYou got your voice and your chance. You got what you are "entitled to". Sanders and you are not "entitled" to anything more. Clinton beat him fair and square. She has been working to build the DNC and her campaign for a long time. She EARNED her win, depsite all the whining from Sanders.
The secret service resources would just be allocated elsewhere, costs would more or less still be there. Big picture thinking has never been Gryphs strong suit.
DeleteBesides, if Hillary is forced out, it will have all been a worthwhile expense.
11:30 - not true. Did you even read the article? Hillary will never be forced out. You are too low info to comment?
DeleteIt is absolutely true 9:17.
DeleteWhat do you think they just turn on and off secret service agents and stop paying them lol?
The article does not dispute that absolute reality. Do you have any idea how government agencies work and are funded annually?
Your dumb-assness is really shining thru, so thanks for that.
Then let him pay for his own security!!! He is not the electorate & frankly I don't want to have to pay for his ego trip.
DeleteGinger, you are a child that does not understand how the ss protection system works for candidates. It does it's job, whether it is for your chosen candidate or not.
DeleteHillary and Bill are worth well over 100 million dollars. Not bad for being lifetime (cough) "public servants" eh?. Maybe they should pay for their own per your dumbass logic, dumbass.
God I wish he'd run independently.
ReplyDeleteI wish he HAD run independently. He wouldn't have gotten anywhere near as far as this. He used the Democrats.
Delete@anon 6:14pm
DeleteI agree, all Bernie did was use the Democratic Party.
My preference is that Bernie would suspend his campaign; however, it annoys me even more that Trump gets Secret Service protection - I think it should be the responsibility of each candidate to pay for the extra security since there is so much money in the election process.
ReplyDeleteLove or hate Trump, he is the presumptive GOP nominee and as such, is entitled to protection. Bernie, on the other hand, never came close to being the Democratic nominee, in spite of what the crazy fool believes.
DeleteBoth Bernie and Trump are spreading hate and fear like no others.
DeleteWe should not be having to pay for their protection as taxpayers - especially those of us that do NOT support them!
@5:37,
DeleteGrow up! That's not how it works here.
It was heartbreaking to have Robert Kennedy shot and killed in 1968. I still feel the heartache. Bobby had heart and empathy, he was the real deal. I was a young teenager at the time, and my mind today always goes to his visits to the poverty stricken Appalachians. He cared.
DeleteSo, whatever their ideology, presidential candidates are running for the highest office, and are very much deserving the protection we offer.
It is worth it to me. But, Bernie is done, and is costing the taxpayers and he knows it.
Sometimes I think he & Jane are addicted of the adulation. Adulation I am sure is waning.
Trump needs cash asap, and Bernie supporters are gonna fart till they get their way, and Jeb Bush is all set to take Donald's place. (please clap) Wow, boys, you are something else. Go home and let the girls handle it this time around.

The Repub voters rejected Jeb Bush. He's done.
From the article: … can cost taxpayers more than $38,000 a day. And with the potential for the Secret Service to be watching over Sanders through the Democratic convention in Philadelphia five weeks from now …
ReplyDelete$38,000 × 5 × 7 = $ 1,330,000

Delete"more than $38,000" is not $38,000.
DeleteCost varies depending on travel and appearance schedule, etc.
DeleteThanks, Ted. It may seems like chump change in the big picture, but we can't critize a person like Ted Cruz for the cost if the government shutdown unless we're willing to concede that wasteful spending takes place on the Democratic side as well.
Delete5:26>FACT on Teddy the cruZZer" The shutdown itself cost the economy an estimated $24 BILLION and 120,000 jobs in just two (2)Weeks.

I'm not surprised. Anything that makes him feel like he matters more than he does, he'll take. Reminds me of $arah. He's become just as pathetic.

Remember "Guarding Tess"? Look for a sequel! lol
ReplyDeleteYour gal won. Stop being so fucking petty.
ReplyDeleteAs a taxpayer, I don't consider $38,000.00 a day petty, esp. considering all the other waste in gov't. And it's especially galling coming from a candidate who's been espousing himself as a "defender of the middle class". Fuck bernie and Mitch McConnell.
DeleteGeorgiaPeach
Yes, our woman won. Too bad no one told that senile old man that he lost, maybe you should tell him. And as far as being petty, I think delegates of Bernie's planning to fart alot during the convention is what you would call petty. This is about wasting tax payer dollars. Maybe you don't pay taxes, but those of us that actually do get to complain about how they are spent.
DeleteVery mature response.

@Anonymous 5:51 PM
DeleteCalling a woman a girl is not demeaning. The women I know call each other girl all the time.
Even Elizabeth Warren referred to she and Hillary has girl, the other day.
She didn't win anything, November will tell the real tale and Hillary has exactly zero in the bag at this point.
DeleteMaybe the reason we're being so firm (NOT petty) is because Bernie voters still insist on using terminology like "gal" to refer to the **most qualified and vetted Presidential candidate in modern history**.
DeleteJuuuuuuust maybe the only pettiness you'll find is when you look in the mirror.
Gee, i wonder what all those unemployed SS agents will do when Bernie concedes at the convention?
ReplyDeleteWill they go on unemployment, or will they be reassigned? This seems like a click-bait story that Gryphen fell for hook, line, and sinker.
The costs don't cover the agents salaries, the costs covered in this 38 plus thousand covers travel, hotels, overtime, providing meals away from their regular job assignments and the overtime to other agents who are getting overtime to cover their regular positions.
DeleteAnonymous5:10 PM,
DeleteCan you get any more knee jerk in your defense of your idol?
Probably get drunk and bang some hookers, as that's what the SS seems best at.
DeleteTrump’s Superstar Attorney For Trump U. Case Is A HUGE Hillary Clinton Backer
ReplyDeleteSo Trump has a skilled, powerful attorney, and in other news, fire is hot. However, Petrocelli is both a strange and notable pick for The Donald. Why? His political donation history shows that he’s not anything like a Trump supporter, or even Republican. In fact, he’s a registered Democrat, and he’s already maxed out the amount he can personally donate to none other than Hillary Clinton.
While Trump rails against the law firm representing the plaintiffs in this case—he claims they’ve given hundreds of thousands of dollars to Hillary’s campaign—he’s ignoring the fact that his own lead attorney has those kinds of ties to Hillary, too. If the plaintiffs’ attorneys are out to get him because they’re Hillary supporters, then it follows that he should worry that his own lead attorney can’t be trusted to represent him skillfully and fairly for that very same reason.

The REAL Democrats are going to come out in force this November to ensure that our candidate wins. The fake Democrats can sit this one and work on their flatulence.
Not really. There are some Busters who will never vote for HRC; these are the same peeps who gripe about President Obama as being too corporate. We won without them in 2012 & they never vote at midterms. We will make up their votes with voters of color and women: The Obama Coalition.

Delete@ Gryphen
DeleteMaybe with their Fart plan you should have said shit this one out.
Please note, Gryphen, that you have just illustrated in your reply to me (I am 7:24) what is losing Hillary her potential Bernie supporters. You have called me "ignorant and mentally unbalanced," and I am neither. I have been a faithful reader of yours for eight years, have helped you on the sly with your punctuation (more often, the lack of it) at times, and have donated money to you for your important work against Sarah Palin. We have a difference of opinion, and instead of telling me why Hillary is a better candidate that Bernie--she being quick to want to go to war and in the pocket of Wall Street, Monsanto, and Big Pharma--you resort to name-calling Bernie supporters. You cannot tell us how her having her own private server to circumvent FOIA requests and then her CHOOSING which emails to submit to the feds is any better than Sarah Palin. Please CONVINCE me why she is better. I'd like to vote for her but so far being female (which I believe is why she is a warmonger--to overcompensate and show she can match the good old boys in war games) is not reason enough for me to want to support her. Add to that her positions that shift with the winds, and I am not stupid to be skeptical of her. Bernie has moved her significantly to the left in her rhetoric, but we know better than to believe this is a true change in her beliefs. She is into the big money as much as anybody (except Bernie) and she will be beholden to the big money interests as she has been. Honestly, I see you as so much a feminist that you think a female President is the answer no matter what. Your daughter must have a really hard time reading these extremely divisive posts of yours.

ReplyDeletePhiladelphia’s archbishop Charles Caput is accused of using mafia-like tactics against a state lawmaker who stands in support of child victims of sexual abuse.
In an email to Pennsylvania state representative Jamie Santora, the archbishop accused the elected official of “betraying the church.” The email went on to say that Santora would suffer “consequences” for supporting legislation designed to provide victims of child sexual abuse with the justice they deserve.
The bill which provoked the vicious message from Caput would extend the amount of time that child sexual assault victims have to bring claims against their abusers.
Under the state’s current law a victim of sexual assault only has until his or her 30th birthday to file a claim against the abuser. The legislation, which passed the state’s lower house in April, would extend the deadline until the victim’s 50th birthday.

ReplyDelete● That old man won't concede to Hillary because that OLD FUCKER AND HIS $200,000 BITCH doesn't want to get rid of their free perks.
● “He has the perception of still running for president, but he’s not doing that in reality.”
WASHINGTON POST:
An expensive reminder that Sanders still hasn’t dropped out: His Secret Service detail
BURLINGTON, Vt. — When Sen. Bernie Sanders, the now-vanquished Democratic presidential candidate, returns to Capitol Hill to vote on Monday, he is expected to be accompanied by his constant traveling companions from the campaign trail: the U.S. Secret Service.
● Though Hillary Clinton has clinched the party’s nomination, Sanders retains one of the trappings of a top-notch candidate.
● A team of agents still guards him at his home, where they’ve constructed a small watch station on the property.
● They travel with him on commercial and charter flights and use a motorcade to whisk him through cities he visits.
● Such round-the-clock protection can cost taxpayers more than $38,000 a day.
● And with the potential for the Secret Service to be watching over Sanders through the Democratic convention in Philadelphia five weeks from now,
● the taxpayers may get stuck with a big security bill long after his campaign receded from the daily cable news cycle.
● The continued security presence also reflects a larger reality of Sanders’s muddled standing in the Democratic race. He has virtually no chance of becoming the party’s nominee, and he is no longer pressing his case to Democratic leaders that he should.
● Yet Sanders remains an active candidate because he has not “suspended” his campaign or taken any other steps that would alter his official status.
● “He has the perception of still running for president, but he’s not doing that in reality.”
● Depending on how that effort goes, it’s possible that Sanders could endorse Clinton before the July 25 start of the convention in Philadelphia, Sanders’s campaign manager, Jeff Weaver, said.
Yet even if that happens, Sanders has no plans to suspend his campaign before the convention, when the party’s platform is finalized, Weaver said.
WHICH MEANS THAT OLD FUCKER KEEPS HIS SECRET SERVICE DETAIL AND POLICE ESCORTS UNTIL JULY 25!
● Sirens from a Metropolitan Police Department SUV blared as the cars sped to a stop in the driveway, and a half dozen Secret Service agents in dark suits exited the vehicles.
● A handful of them glanced around, keeping a protective circle around the gold-colored SUV that Sanders sat in. Another whispered into a microphone on his sleeve.
● A moment later, the agent guardedly opened the door, and Sanders and his wife, Jane, emerged.
● As Sanders and his entourage breezed through the lobby, they were greeted by a large crowd of onlookers who clapped and yelled “Bernie!”
● He is just so convinced of the righteousness of his cause that I think he is having trouble giving it all up,” Manley said.
● "He’s still a candidate for president, so we continue to protect him,” said one agent, who requested anonymity
● the Secret Service estimated it would need $123.5 million to carry out its protection of presidential candidates.
● There are only two options,” she said. “He doesn’t want to land the plane, or he doesn’t know how to land the plane.”
LOL they are going to spin this one by having a massive fart-in like 4 year olds. I'll bring the match so they can feel the burn in their butt hurts.

DeleteInfo for Anonymous 10:25
ReplyDeleteWashington (CNN) – With the stroke of a pen Thursday, President Barack Obama gave himself and his wife Secret Service protection for the rest of their lives.
The new law, which passed the House and Senate in December, designates that all former U.S. presidents who served after January 1, 1997, along with their spouses, receive protection from the Secret Service for their entire lifetimes – meaning former President George W. Bush and his wife Laura are also covered. The law also stipulates that children of presidents receive protection until the age of 16.
Lifetime government-provided security for former presidents was the law of the land until 1997, when Congress passed legislation limiting Secret Service protection to ten years after leaving office.
The 1997 law said any president serving before January 1, 1997 would still receive the lifelong protection. That means with the law signed Thursday, every former president – Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush – along with Obama will continue to receive Secret Service details for the rest of their lives.

In 2008, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, were virtually tied in the popular vote and MUCH closer in the number of delegates. Sanders lost the poluar vote, the pledged deleagtes and super delegates. So what is Sanders point in not conceding?
DeleteGenerally, I have liked following this blog, but the obsessions with Palin and Sanders escape me. Palin's politics and her family have zero interest for me. As for Sanders, pain in the ass that he might be, he's attempting to bring some much needed change to the Democratic party. Its no understatement that as a national party, the democrats have been pretty spineless. They did far more damage by rejecting Obama in the midterms than Sanders ever will by remaining in through the convention.
ReplyDeleteSanders interest in changing the Democratic party was minuscule right up to the point when it was clear he could not win under the existing rules. Sanders knew the rules when he decided to run for a spot on the Democratic ticket. His preaching about fixing the rules (which he ignored for 40 years) is laughable.
DeleteDemocrats did far more damage by not showing up to vote at the midterms.
DeleteAs much as I feel that Sanders is a pain in the ass and delusional, I have to agree with your statement that "as a national party, the democrats have been pretty spineless. They did far more damage by rejecting Obama in the midterms than Sanders ever will by remaining in through the convention. "
DeleteI'll still never understand why so many democrats didn't like Bernie's ideas, especially the free college.
ReplyDeleteDemocrats are always for expansive social programs; welfare, food stamps, WIC, student loan reductions, ACA healthcare subsidies, the auto buyback in 2009, all of them nothing more than government freebies, yet Sanders mentions free college and all hell breaks loose.
Just never made sense to me as it doesn't fit with the social liberal paradigm espoused by Democrats.
There are surely many things you do not understand.
DeleteDemocrats have many "ideas" like Bernie Sanders' but they are attentive enough to know what may pass through Congress and what will not go over in each of the states. Bernie, for someone who's now been in Congress for about two decades, seems absolutely clueless about how legislation works. And, to boot, he never addressed how any of this would be paid for!
DeleteIn his rush to engage all of the "youth" vote, Bernie Sanders made pie-in-the-sky promises, from legalizing pot to free college. Somewhere in his brain, he must have had at least an inkling that none of it could become the law of the land. Remember his interview with "Rolling Stone" when he simply sloughed off questions about how any of this could work.
The vast majority of Democrats are more mature and smarter that the Berniebros.
Beaglemom
Free college=higher taxes for the middle class and poor as explained by Bernie's tax plan.
DeleteIt took him a long time to explain how he was going to pay for free college, now we know why, he had to raise taxes on the least that can afford it.

ReplyDeleteIf we don't keep the SS (Secret Service for you Retawds) busy they'll just be out bangin' hookers.
I agree with 7:58. We need to keep the SS busy. Why should the American taxpayers pay the SS's salaries and they turn around and give it to Pimp Daddy Todd's prostitution business? Todd, Sarah, Track and Bristol needs to find real jobs if Todd feels the need to recruit and exploit our young women to feed his family. Just telling it like it is Lou Sarah.
We like Bernie's ideas, but he's selling a bill of goods he can never possibly enact. Surely you've witnessed the do-nothing Congress, whose primarily goal is to defeat our president. That plan will remain in effect with the next Democratic president. Bernie has not explained to his followers that what he proposes will be next to impossible to do. Congress will never cooperate. Bernie hasn't prepared his supporters for the realism that is in DC; he also doesn't have the people skills, or the patience to try his policies incrementally.
ReplyDeleteIt's not his policies we don't like, it's that he has burned a lot of bridges with us. He's lost plenty of supporters (me, for one).
His idea of changing or improving the DNC is hubris in the making. How he can be so belligerent toward the DNC that made it easier to run under its auspices is beyond me. He wants to dictate who & how the convention is run and the parties policies is pretty brazen. I would suggest that maybe he could stop creating havoc where none should exist.
He needs to stop the disrespectful planned fart-in now.
If he insists on continuing on, then I want to see his tax returns. I would like an accounting of where the funds came from for that trip to Rome. I want to consistently see some of that trunculent anger aimed at Donald Trump instead of aimed at lifelong Democrats.
It is what it is and nothing's going to change. Just accept the reality. Hardly the attitude this country was founded on.
DeleteSo much for being a Socialist, they should send Bernie the bill for Burning the taxpayers.
ReplyDeleteJust like other revolutionaries, they get a little taste of power and it goes to their heads.
Free College, Stop Trump from becoming president, Free round trip visits to the Vatican for Everyone. Bernie doesn't want a revolution, he wants free room and board at our expense because his plan is to raise taxes. Nothing's free. Every "Bernie" post turns into a Gryphen bash, name calling, and jumping up and down like a kid who's parents said "no" to an ice cream cone. He's our version of Trump, he makes the demands and expects everyone to jump.
