Primary day open thread. Update!

This will be my last primary day open thread and thank Odin for that.

Today's offering will be, in the order that their polls close,  New Jersey, New Mexico, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, and finally California.,

New Jersey's polls should be closing right now.

The polls in North Dakota, South Dakota, and New Mexico close in about an hour.

Montana is next in about two hours.

And finally the big Kahuna California will close at about 7:00 PM AK time.

At this point there is of course no real suspense as Hillary is already the presumptive nominee, but it will still be interesting to see how certain states vote and if Sanders is actually able to steal California away from Clinton.

As always I will update this post as polls close and information is available.

Update: Well this doesn't bode well.
At some point you are just embarrassing yourself.

Update 2: Donald Trump is speaking right now and reaching out to Bernie Sanders supporters who were victimized by a "rigged system."

I bet he really thinks he can get some of them to come over to the dark side too.

And who knows, maybe he's right.

Update 3: Hillary just won New Jersey. Well that's one down.

Update 4: Sanders wins North Dakota. (It is the last caucus state.)

Update 5: In the speech she is giving right now Hillary Clinton just referred to herself as the first female presidential nominee in history.

Oh it is on now!

Update 6: New Mexico has been called for Hillary now as well.

Update 7: Hillary has now won South Dakota.

Update 8:
By the way Hillary is leading in California.

Update 9: Sanders has won Montana with a whole 21 delegates up for grabs.

Without Gryph's help I never would have found Malia or Stonekettle Station. I came to IM for the truth about Sarah and I found that and lots more.

Yes, Bernie is embarrassing himself, but hey, if he wants to, that's his decision. (I was once a fan of his, but not now.)

As for embarrassing yourself, that honor should ALWAYS go to Sarah Palin and her worthless spawn. Donald Trump however, is trying very hard to earn that distinction every day.

It is just a shame that a man with such good ideals and and love for his country can't see the writing on the wall. It gets harder each day to see him as nothing but blind by his own ambition. This is not the same man who captured the hearts and minds of Democrats across the country over the past two years. He is doing a disservice to himself and those who admire him. If he wants to be Ralph Nader and hand this election to the crazies and kooks, he is doing a fine job.

Me, too. I say that as a Hillary voter. I think that would make a lot of you happy, and it would be more authentic for Bernie. (8He's not a real Democrat.)

I wish he'd run with Jill Stein, who tweeted today that she's the greatest female presidential candidate in history.

I think it would be frustrating for Bernie after having been in the limelight to become a third party candidate. He spent way more than HRC--he spent something like 92 million on media buys. But maybe he could restart his fundraising. Then Bernie or bust people would have an outlet; maybe you can get some progressives in Congress that way.

I think HRC will still win, though.

    3. Anonymous6:01 PM

If Bernie took his supporters and went Indie, HRC would lose to Sanders or Trump.

      Delete
    4. Anonymous6:12 PM

6:01 - I don't think so. I don't think the ultimate Bernie or Bust movement would end up being that big. I think it's smaller than people know, and fueled only by social mediA. Notice how not one person ever said here that they had phone-banked for him. His numbers, which I read every other day, never met their targets. They never had enough volunteers even after they cut their goals in half. 70% of his supporters say they will vote for HRC. So that leaves 30%; at least a third of them will change over, too, or sit it out. Bernie would be just like Nader, but I think HRC is going to make some red states go blue because Trump is so repulsive.ive read at least 4 projections about that.

      Delete
    5. Anonymous6:20 PM

6:12, 70% say they will vote HRC, assuming Bernie is out of the mix. I doubt the number would be that high if Bernie was a 3rd party option.
The ONLY reason HRC might make some states change colors is because, as you stated, Trump is so repulsive. She certainly couldn't do that with a legitimate Republican opponent.

Hillary just called it in a great email:

    Tonight, we made history.

After all our hard work and tough fights -- and an unwavering commitment to love, kindness, our country, and each other -- we broke one of the highest, hardest glass ceilings in America.

Together, we secured the Democratic nomination. For the first time ever, a woman will be a major party’s nominee to become President of the United States.

I have to tell you, I wish my mother were here to see this.
She was my rock from the day I was born until the day she left us. This past Saturday would have been her 97th birthday -- she was born the same day Congress passed the 19th Amendment to give women the right to vote.

I wish she could have seen this team and your extraordinary conviction -- how you never stopped fighting, no matter how tough this election got. How your voices lifted this campaign up in communities all across the country. How your investment in the values we share made this moment possible.

We’ll need that same energy and commitment going forward, because the stakes of this election could not be higher.
We cannot let a man who demeans women, attacks people for their race or religion, and traffics in paranoid conspiracy theories take the Oath of Office.

We won’t let a man who said he’ll order our troops to commit war crimes by killing the wives and children of suspected terrorists become Commander-in-Chief.

This election isn’t about the same old fights between Democrats and Republicans. It’s about who we are as Americans. And it is an argument we must win.

What we did tonight is proof of what we can do when we work together. Don’t let anyone tell you that what we’ve achieved here isn’t important. And don’t let anyone tell you that we can’t win this election.

      Is this you,Peggy ?
      Tuesday, 8 January 2013
At the end of November 2012 a surprising social network battle developed between Adam Junglen, Jimmy “Gobboboy” Fricke and Peggy “gobbomom” Klausner. Once friends it seemed that Fricke and Klausner were accusing Junglen of stealing a bracelet.
On top of this, Fricke’s mum accused Junglen of abusing her son’s dog, calling him “a little bastard”.

The accusations shocked many people in the community, including Junglen, who insisted he never touched the bracelet and that Klausner was “insane”.

Since the incident there has been little mention of what went on but in the last 24 hours Klausner has taken to Twitter to apologise to Junglen.

According to a series of Tweets, Klausner and Jimmy were wrong and the bracelet was in their possession all the time.

@gobbomom: “sweet Jesus H. Christ, when will I/ we all learn that the opposite always come true? I'm sorry Adam Junglen. You were wronged, and INNOCENT. Jimmy found his bracelet while moving. Adam is completely innocent. Jimmy and I feel like idiots and are totally sorry.”

    My translations of Hillary:

"We are strong when our economy creates historically high levels of income inequality, like my husband did, and like Obama has done."

"Justice and equality can win. Just not today."

"While the 19th amendment gave women the right to vote, I spent most of the 1960s supporting candidates trying to take it away from black people."

"We need to be the clean energy leader of the world. That is why I have supported fracking across the country and strong armed foreign governments into fracking on their soil as well."

Trump goes against everything we stand for. What we stand for is forcing Haiti to lower its minimum wage so our corporations can take advantage of them

Clinton: "Bridges are better than walls. Well, unless they are walls around refugee children in this country, causing real and permanent psychological damage to them. Those are good walls. Because children who are escaping certain death don't matter."

Clinton, "Sanders has spent his whole life fighting for progressive causes. Unlike me, I have spent my life trying to destroy progressive causes from within."

Seriously, fuck you Hillary. Go home and spend time with the grandkid you and hubbell have. It MIGHT help you grow a heart.

Hillary is an upstanding, principled leader who has survived the most intrusive, invasive, aggressive and unending vetting process in political history.

Time and again, she has emerged with her integrity intact. In the words of the Des Moines Register, which endorsed her in January, “Clinton has demonstrated that she is a thoughtful, hardworking public servant who has earned the respect of leaders at home and abroad. She stands ready to take on the most demanding job in the world.”

Having worked with Hillary for three years as an adviser and seen her approach to life and politics, having watched her as a mom and daughter, as a friend to so many people, I know that the rightwing caricature of her is an offensive distortion and I feel personally compelled to speak the truth and to fight the slander.

This is very sobering. The author really lays out what is at stake.

No Time For Trump, Part One: Iraq, Syria And The Danger Of ISIS

...Only one candidate — Hillary Clinton — has worked to grasp the devilish military and diplomatic complexities thrust on us by ISIS. Donald Trump grasps nothing.

Set aside his standard-issue lies about opposing our involvement in Iraq and Libya — both of which he originally supported.

The real problem is his abysmal ignorance of pretty much anything involving foreign policy — let alone Iraq, Syria, or the rudiments of counter-terrorism against ISIS. Add to this an appalling lack of judgment or consistency rooted in a narcissism so deep that he is indifferent to the complex realities of a dangerous world, in which ISIS looms as a constant threat.

Every mindless riff threatens to enhance those dangers. His castigation of all Muslims abroad, a precious recruiting tool for ISIS. His call for surveillance of Muslims at home. His embrace of torture. His call for indiscriminate bombings of civilians. And his only prescription for fighting ISIS on the ground is seizing Iraqi oil facilities, the one thing which could unite all the warring forces against us.

Finally, Trump’s public musings about fighting ISIS with nuclear weapons. It is hard to list all the consequences of such an act, should it ever occur. But here are a few:

The mass murder of millions of innocent civilians. The poisoning of countless more. The environmental despoliation of a region. The ineradicable hatred among those who survive.

The loathing of the world at large. The enmity of Muslims around the globe. The terrible and twisted vindication of ISIS’s characterization of America. The burial of our capacity for good.

To even conjure those consequences aloud is a measure of Trump’s incapacity for office. Not to mention his capacity for empowering ISIS with every word and deed.

In short, Donald Trump would do more to promote the spread of jihadist terrorism than any military victory ever could. Unleashing him as president in a world of dangerous and complex geopolitics would be akin to giving a hand grenade to a two-year-old in a crowded room.

Come Election Day, the rest of us must be grown-ups.

    Statement Released By President Obama

Statement from President Obama just released by the White House Press Secretary. Pay particular attention to the last paragraph.

Tonight, President Obama called both Secretary Clinton and Senator Sanders. The President congratulated both candidates for running inspiring campaigns that have energized Democrats, brought a new generation of Americans into the political process, and shined a spotlight on important policy ideas aimed at making sure our economy and our politics work for everybody, not just those with wealth and power.

The President congratulated Secretary Clinton for securing the delegates necessary to clinch the Democratic Nomination for President. Her historic campaign inspired millions and is an extension of her lifelong fight for middle-class families and children.

The President thanked Senator Sanders for energizing millions of Americans with his commitment to issues like fighting economic inequality and special interests' influence on our politics.

In addition, at Senator Sanders' request, the President and Senator Sanders will meet at the White House on Thursday to continue their conversation about the significant issues at stake in this election that matter most to America's working families. The President looks forward to continuing the conversation with Senator Sanders about how to build on the extraordinary work he has done to engage millions of Democratic voters, and to build on that enthusiasm in the weeks and months ahead.
