There were a lot of good speeches last night at the DNC convention, but I think Michelle Obama's was the best.

Courtesy of Vanity Fair:

As perhaps the last Democrat who could do no wrong in the eyes of the American people, Michelle Obama brought a divided audience to their feet in Philadelphia by urging the country to vote for Hillary Clinton, speaking not just as the First Lady, but as a mother of two daughters who could not let a certain “bully” become president.

“Barack [Obama] and I think about every day as we try to guide and protect our girls through the challenges of this unusual life in the spotlight,” she said. “How we urge them to ignore those who question their father’s citizenship or faith. How we insist that the hateful language they hear from public figures on TV does not represent the true spirit of this country. How we explain that once someone is cruel or acts like a bully, you don’t stoop to their level. No, our motto is, ‘when they go low, we go high.’ With every word we utter, with every action we take, we know our kids are watching us.”

Obama never mentioned Donald Trump by name. But as she spoke about the need to elect a president with whom they could entrust the future of their children, she heavily hinted that someone “angry or disillusioned,” who liked to swear and degrade people, could not be a role model to young Americans.

She was incredibly inspirational, incredibly poised, and incredibly effective.

And yet as you can hear in the video even she was booed by those who will never be satisfied.

For me I was at times almost overwhelmed with emotion as once again I was reminded of just how perfect our first family is. Especially when compared to those on the other side of the aisle fighting to replace them.

We have been honored to have a magnificent President, a magnificent First Lady, and a magnificent eight years of Democratic leadership.

And that is why we need, and deserve eight more years of it.

Pure CLASS. Neither the President or First Lady were born into priviledge, yet they personify CLASS and DIGNITY. Soilid values they pass on to their two girls. Did any of the female speakers hawk their clothing like Ivanka tRump did after her speech? Girters gotta grift, I suppose.

Obama wasn't born Romney-privileged, but he was born to many privileges - college educated parents, travel and opportunities. Those are big deals. Not to dismiss the oppression also has endured as a black child and now man in America, but he wasn't born into poverty. His rise is remarkable, and he has pure class, as you say. let's just not make the story more than it is. It's a great story without amplification.

Same for Michelle although I don't think she had as many privileges. But she did have two parents and a traditional household and education was important.

8:09 President Obamas' father had very little to do with him . He was essentially abandoned by him.He says he tries to be like the father he wished he had.His mother sent him to live with his grandparents so he was raised without a father and for long periods a mother. I wouldn't say that was privileged.

  12. Bernie Sanders, despite intentionally running as an independent, from his initial run for US Congress, has been boosted, supported, aided, and abetted by the Democratic Party for decades. He repaid such invaluable help by stating that President Obama be primaried;ranting and raving against the front runner, HRC with horrifying unnecessary negativity;repeatedly labeling the primary process corrupt or rigged, except when he was winning; allowing his campaign to hack the DNC files illegally and criminally (but without any punishment); refusing to concede the race when all primaries had finished; and incessantly marginalizing the very people who have sustained and upheld the Democratic Party, people who did and are doing much of the heavy lifting and enduring the thankless grind of political labor, the people his supporters needlessly booed and heckled last night. I am infuriated, not because I cannot bear dissent, but because such behavior is infantile and disrespectful.

My mother, may she rest in peace, always reminded me how to behave when guests were coming. She would say, put on your company manners. Did no one ever tell these spoiled brats?

HRC continues to show class. FLOTUS Michelle Obama gently chastised the hecklers recalling how HRC and her supporters behaved back in 2008. Of course, none of them knows that history because they weren't Democrats then (or now, truth be told!).

Sanders sent out an email to supporters last night saying,

Our campaign has always been about a grassroots movement of Americans standing up and saying: “Enough is enough. This country and our government belong to all of us, not just a handful of billionaires.”

      He said,

I just finished speaking at the Democratic National Convention, where I addressed the historic nature of our grassroots movement and what’s next for our political revolution.

And that next step is a group called ‘Our Revolution‘ – you know, that revolution Trump claims he abandoned:

Our work will continue in the form of a new group called Our Revolution. The goal of this organization will be no different from the goal of our campaign: we must transform American politics to make our political and economic systems once again responsive to the needs of working families.

We cannot do this alone. All of us must be a part of Our Revolution.

He even has a book deal with Thomas Dunne Books to publish “Our Revolution: A Future to Believe In” in November.

On Sunday, prior to the DNC’s big show in Philadelphia, Senator Bernie Sanders had to weigh in and comment after Debbie Wasserman Schultz announced her departure as DNC Chairwoman. There was one specific remark that revealed, in a blazing display of either hubris or ignorance, precisely why Hillary Clinton garnered more votes from Democrats than Sanders; he is not really a Democrat. The revelation that revealed the registered Independent from Vermont’s identity as not a Democrat was:

“The [Democratic] party now needs new leadership that will open the doors of the party and welcome in working people and young people.”

Let that statement sink in for a minute. A “Democrat for life” would never have made such a comment and still expect to be considered a Democrat. One might expect to hear that from a Republican, but never from a career establishment politician with more than a passing knowledge of Democrats and their past and present political agenda and policies.

That stunning remark is tantamount to a white supremacist counseling the NAACP to get new leadership that will open its doors and welcome in African Americans, or scolding the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and demanding it opens its doors and welcomes members of the LGBTQ community.

For as many decades as this author has participated in the electoral process, only the Democratic Party has welcomed, advocated for, and worked tirelessly to advance the interests of working families, young people, minorities and all Americans. Just 8 years ago a lifelong Democrat, one Barack Obama, successfully campaigned on, and won two general elections, advocating for working families and young people; two groups that aided in his ascendance and two-term tenure in the White House.

Senator Sanders knows this as well as he knows he is an Independent from Vermont. Of all the comments the Senator could have made about Wasserman Schultz’s resignation, he certainly could have devised something other than calling for Democrats to do what they have been doing for decades or complain they didn’t embrace his candidacy after decades of criticizing Democrats for not being socialists.

The second part of Senator Sanders’ comment was

Sanders saved the best for last:

Our job now is to see that platform implemented by a Democratic Senate, a Democratic House and a Hillary Clinton presidency – and I am going to do everything I can to make that happen.

I have known Hillary Clinton for 25 years. I remember her as a great first lady who broke precedent in terms of the role that a first lady was supposed to play as she helped lead the fight for universal health care. I served with her in the United States Senate and know her as a fierce advocate for the rights of children.

Hillary Clinton will make an outstanding president and I am proud to stand with her here tonight.

Sen. Sanders’ speech was technically perfect. He made his supporters feel good about what they have done. Sen. Sanders praised his opponent. He gave the rationale for supporting Hillary Clinton, and he did his best to redirect his supporters’ efforts towards getting Hillary Clinton elected.

Her smack down of Trump was cleverly disguised as advice the Obamas have given their daughters about how to deal with surly classmates: “When someone is cruel or acts like a bully, you don’t stoop to their level. No, our motto is, when they go low, we go high.” Her gentle little stab at Sanders-Weaver-driven magical thinking was disguised as praise of Hillary from 2008: “And when she didn’t win the nomination eight years ago, she didn’t get angry or disillusioned.” And while her praise of Clinton contained the usual odes to her passion for children, Michelle also zeroed in on what is the nominee’s most impressive quality: “There were plenty of moments when Hillary could have decided that this work was too hard, that the price of public service was too high, that she was tired of being picked apart for how she looks or how she talks or even how she laughs. But here’s the thing. What I admire most about Hillary is that she never buckles under pressure. She never takes the easy way out. And Hillary Clinton has never quit on anything in her life.”

I would put Michelle Obama in the same category as Eleanor Roosevelt, they are the two greatest First Ladies in the history of our nation. Michelle Obama has an infinite source of grace and patience, I know she is exceptionally intelligent, but her compassion, her capacity for forgiveness is immeasurable. I am so proud to have voted twice for our first family, I will be so sad come next year to see them leave our White House. How do you follow an example like that? I have had my share of misgivings over some of our President's foreign policy measures, such as the drone program that rains terror and destruction over the Middle East at times killing innocents, not pushing hard for a public option in the early days of the ACA, he is pushing for it now, and not pushing the DOJ to prosecute bankers, but overall I am so proud of what President Obama has accomplished. Michelle Obama on the other hand, there is nothing but praise, she has worked so hard on the behalf of others, she has kept her head up high despite all of the racist and hateful commentary that has plagued her for the past 7 1/2 years and she has been an exemplary role model for children and young adults everywhere. She will be sorely missed.

I looooved me the speeches from FLOTUS as well as from Elizabeth Warren. Both VERY powerful speeches! And you could see that FLOTUS spoke from her heart, and not from a speech written by someone else who maybe sneeked in some stuff stolen from some other people's speeches...

That said, I find the following very interesting: http://www.rawstory.com/2016/07/social-media-slams-bernie-backers-for-heckling-black-dnc-speakers-bad-optics-but-perfect-metaphor/

I have long held the opinion, that many of the Bernie Bros actually are ReThugs, trying to derail the Dems by infiltrating some movement and pretending to be supporters. Their true colors came out during the black/hispanic/female speakers addresses, when they wouldn't STFU, not even for FLOTUS!
I am very glad at how the organizers handled them, though - like little two year olds, having a tantrum: eventually they will grow tired when noone else picks up their screams and they will shut up.

I guess after decades of the US meddling in Russian politics they finally decided that two can play this game.

We dangled financial aid to Russia during the 90's and would only give up the goods if they subscribed to our plans to build their post-Communist-Democracy. Our attempts failed and Boris Yeltsin, who was an American puppet, never regained popularity with his people and had to resign, ushering in Putin.

We meddled in their Ukraine crisis playing behind the scenes and ultimately causing more harm than good.

Why would you think it is only America that is allowed to insinuate herself into other country's politics, policies and conflicts and not the other way around?

And you are one of this site's more venomous fake BernieBros, 8:26. Sometimes your angst at your party not getting back the White House overwhelms you and you forget to pretend to be a progressive (or even a Democrat).

@8:26 AM What is your purpose here? Bernie is not a registered Democrat, so WTF makes him demand changes in policies of the Party? Bernie is an outsider, fact.

"How we explain that once someone is cruel or acts like a bully, you don’t stoop to their level. No, our motto is, ‘when they go low, we go high.’ With every word we utter, with every action we take, we know our kids are watching us.”

Now that's something to be respected for and exactly why I lost a deal of respect for Elizabeth Warren and the likes of IM commenters.

A good many of you need to grow up and take the First Ladies advice.
