VP candidate Tim Kaine seems to be at odds with Hillary Clinton's desire to repeal the Hyde Amendment.

(To hear the relevant portions fast forward to the 4:45 mark.)

Courtesy of CNN:

Tim Kaine differs with Hillary Clinton on a longstanding rule banning federal taxpayer dollars from funding abortions, the Democratic vice presidential candidate told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union," in an interview that aired Sunday.

That's a rare policy disagreement with Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee, and her running mate, who said he was "so humbled" to be chosen for the ticket.

"My job is really to just do everything I can to support a great Clinton presidency and I'm really excited to be off and running on that task," the Virginia senator said.

Abortion, though, remains a point of difference between the pair. Kaine said he supports the Hyde Amendment, a 40-year-old rule preventing federal taxpayer dollars from funding abortions. That contradicts comments by Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook in a July 24 "State of the Union" appearance. Kaine "has said that he will stand with Secretary Clinton to defend a woman's right to choose, to repeal the Hyde Amendment," Mook quoted Kaine as saying.

"My voting position on abortion hasn't really changed," Kaine said in the interview aired Sunday. "I support the Hyde Amendment. I haven't changed that."

Well this is interesting, and kind of addresses some of the concerns that certain progressive had about Hillary's selection of Tim Kaine.

While it is nice to hear that he supports Roe vs Wade, it is a little troubling that he is not as pro-choice as Hillary. Or as pro-choice as the majority of progressives in this country.

The thing that is kind of frustrating to me is that Kaine's point of view seems to stem completely from his Catholic faith, which means that he is a candidate for the VP slot on the Democratic ticket whose opinions are informed by a belief in primitive superstitions.

That is quite troubling in 2016.

As I have stated before I really don't give a shit what fantasies you choose to embrace so long as they do not impact your real world decisions.

Back in the day, if I had chosen abortion, I would have paid for it myself. Why should government?

    1. Poor women can't afford to pay for abortions on their own.

And trust me it costs the government SIGNIFICANTLY more to provide for a child whose mother is unable or unwilling to care for them, then it does to pay to terminate a pregnancy.

If Republicans were true fiscal conservatives they would be all for the repealing the Hyde Amendment.

AND ALSO, if men needed abortions, you can be sure they would be funded, like other medical issues men get funding for.

AND ALSO ALSO, if you don't fund abortions for poor women, some of them will resort to the coathanger and cause expensive other problems that ARE funded.

AND THIRD: Well-off women can and do have abortions when they want them, no matter the legalities. It has always been so. Not fair to have such a difference for poor women.

Love ya, Gryph, but disagree. Everyone has choices that they make daily right or wrong. Government is going to bail you out of poor decisions? I can't buy that while I totally understand your view.

Poor or rich, NO one gets the the right to mandate what a woman decides with her own body. It is her decision and hers alone.

There are so many reasons why women have abortions, many of them medical, yet they get no medical coverage. Unless, that is, their docs change the wording on why they're at the hospital; for example, and this has been going on for a long time, to get a D&C that's said to be for another reason--and as another poster said, rich women have lived this way with none of the burdens that less wealthy women have.

So many people, even ones who may say they're not staunchly anti-choice, talk about abortion in a way that reveals that they still think women need to be punished, that they deserve some amount of punishment. The guy involved makes half of the poor judgment, yet he's off scot-free usually, in so many ways that I won't list.

And of course there has been insurance coverage for penile operations and extender mechanisms and pills like Viagra that exist for the reasons of men having absolute pride in their manliness and long-lasting sexual pleasure, and for the reason of injecting women with their sperm. Yet women are treated like dirt when it comes to coverage for birth control.

So much to say on this topic, but so little time tonight.

Considering the alternative candidate, Clinton/Kaine would have to drop kick puppies from the stage for me to not vote for them. And even then, I might think twice. For the future of the world, you know.

Do you know who is actually intelligent enough to get abortions when faced with an unwanted pregnancy? Just a hint, it's not right wingers, whether their welfare via the federal government pays for it or not, they have those babies and we just keep feeding them, and diapering them and giving them WIC and paying for their public school supplies and then giving the same to their abundant offspring.

People who want to terminate and who can afford it will always do it, the "Clevons" of this world ain't gonna abort no matter who pays for it.

    It's a non-issue.

Morons breed, and they breed heavily, be it for "baby daddy money" or public assistance they just never consider abortion because there are too many financial benefits for "choosing life".

Why do you think we have a significant portion of our population that supports Trump for POTUS?

Yep, it's fine and dandy for the govt./taxpayers to pay for all the results of poor judgement when it comes to going through with a pregnancy--and the women need boatloads of assistance for so many things and for years--but to pay for a much less expensive abortion is just too much to ask.

It should come as no shock since while Governor of Virginia he agreed and signed a bill requiring "education" and a waiting period before women are allowed to get an abortion.

  6. Every candidate is going to be wrong on some things.

And I expect Kaine's position may well change over time.

Meanwhile, the legality of abortion and access to abortion remains the front line. Federal payment? We will get there eventually.

  7. Anonymous2:59 PM

Kaine separates his personal religious choice about abortions from supporting everyone has a right to choice. I viewed no federal funding for abortions a fair compromise regarding Planned Parenthood.

I will disagree with Gryphen on this point. I think it is absurd to pay for consequence of unprotected sex. I am more inclined to pay for having some people like addicts being sterilized.

Because we have too many old, fat white guys (sitting in the United States Congress and State Legislatures), that are Republicans, worried about their own sexual functions. Plus, they control women's rights and it's way past time they be stopped. Republicans are nothing more than do nothing, control freaks!

Guys like McConnell, McCain, etc. Paul Ryan is acting like them, but is younger. He needs to go too!

It's way past time to vote their butts out of office when and if they are up for reelection!

Also, we need term limits! The old, fat, white guys are getting rich throughout their long tenures, not following their constituents wishes and irk the Hell out of me!

We also need to get some of the Republican women out of Congress too! Namely, the 'do nothing' Lisa Murkowski! She's an embarrassment to Alaska - much as Sarah Palin has been!

What is wrong with Alaskan voters? We need change and November will be the election to impose it!

We are paying for all the women who are on GA for families. They are getting all sorts of medical treatment (all sorts, including for all the complications that exponentially outnumber those for abortion) and food and clothing and help with housing. When it comes to females who get pregnant and don't choose abortion, suddenly we're not talking about poor judgment? But anyone who chooses abortion has to pay for poor judgement? Give me a fucking break.

With the Clinton machine, there is no mistake in what Clinton or the VP says. Hillary has hopes of getting the "Clinton Republicans" just as Ronald Reagan had the Reagan Democrats in 1984.

Tim Kaine is not the one signing bills. But having the VP express his personal views on abortion might help bring a whole lot of Republicans on board the Clinton Train.

    Just a thought.

This has been a puzzlement to me for a while: Why do people respond to her with this gut reaction of discomfort—even dislike? I understand that the right wing narrative of distrust has been repeated so often that people find it an easy explanation to reach for, but over all these years of attacks against her, I have never heard anything substantive to support it.

...So now that the campaign cycle has reached a point that a lot of really reassuring and inspiring stories about her are coming out, I feel really great about her candidacy. I’m thrilled to support her. I think she’ll make an excellent president. What keeps startling me is that some people who kind of want to be on her side, or should be on her side, aren’t feeling it. I’m not startled that some right wing, Trump-supporting congressperson from a nearby suburban Republican district casually drops the “corrupt and dishonest” meme, but when the liberal radio host he’s talking with lets it go without a murmur, and when millions of voters find it plausible, I just wonder what is driving that. Why does it seem to so many people to somehow jibe with their own impressions?

IMO I don't have a problem with federal funding for abortions in cases of rape, incest, mother's life is in jeopardy, or the pregnancy will not end well (stillbirth or miscarriage). I do have a problem with my taxes going towards someone like Bristol Palin who doesn't take her cramp pills so she can trap an equally ignorant MOH winner and fails.

You can be a Democrat and pro life. I am, but I don't have any desire to prevent women from making their own choices. It is not my place to do that. Roe V Wade has been the law for 43 years. If Republicans wanted to do away with it, why didn't they try harder to prevent it all those years ago? Or was it the influence of Frances Schaeffer and others that used abortion to involve Christians in politics that has caused a great deal of turmoil in politics that simply does not belong there? There is so much animostity now with Christians attacking more liberal minded Christians with a passion? I am so sick of that crap, but it happens all the time. I think they have lost their minds in supporting Trump, just completely insane just because he is a "republican." They have simply lost all perspective. I hear it all the time, if you vote for a Democrat, you support abortion. The churches would tell you that you are killing babies if you voted for a Democrat and you'd better vote Republican even if you disagreed with them on almost everything else. They are great at guilting people to death. I had to quit goiong about a decade ago or lose my mind myself. Churches must stay out of politics or should be heavily taxed!

I'm pro choice and think Kaine can keep his religious beliefs separate. It needs to be available to everyone in a safe setting. I don't judge other women's choices, don't want an abortion? Don't have one. Make it illegal? Watch the death rate rise from back alley butchers, because someone else's beliefs are being forced on others. That's not America, and that's why we need to GOTV.
