A group of Republican is running an ad asking Donald Trump to keep his promise that he would drop out if the polls showed he could not win.

Courtesy of Think Progress:

A group of Republicans who are dismayed by Trump and alarmed by his slipping poll numbers will be running ads in key states across the country, calling for Trump to step aside, according to a new report from Politico.

The ad, which was sponsored by the group "Free the Delegates" will run in suburbs in Florida, Virginia, Ohio and Michigan, according to Politico. Free the Delegates had tried to stop Trump at the Republican convention, but had fallen short. The ad is titled "Keep Your Promise," which is a throwback to a comment Trump made early in the campaign that he'd bow out of the presidential race if he was far behind in national polls.

"Resign the nomination. Let the RNC replace you so we can beat Hillary," the ad read at the end.

I don't often agree with Republicans but I DO agree with this group.

However I would like to see Trump wait until late in October to make this decision, so that there was nothing the GOP could do to replace him and his name remained on the ballots despite the fact that he no longer was actively running for the job.

Damn that would be delicious.

At this point, I don't see his ego letting him.
How NOT to run a campaign.

It's never about the good of the country with the GOP. It's always about winning and beating the other guy.

Don't forget lining their pockets while the rest of us suffer. Think they give a crap? I give you Joni Ernst exhibit A. Tundra twat endorsed, full 180 once she got her bread loaf-bagged foot in the door.

Doesn't matter. Whoever it is will still lose. They'll elect and throwaway placeholder. Someone who has no future chance of a nomination. That way they won't taint the possible future run of someone with a hope in hell. They'll elect a goat.

Sarah Palin would be perfect for that. And she'd agree in a heartbeat because then she would be a former presidential nominee, not VP nominee. She'd see an opportunity for more grifting.

But they'd probably ask Pence to step up a spot, then nominate someone lame for VP. Scotty Walker would be perfect.

That's what I think too. Both are Koch-fueled and the brothers and John Birchers would be delighted should they win.

Disappoint the Koch brothers, vote blue in November!

I don't agree with them! Knowing how ignorant and racist many voters are, Trump COULD win without campaigning. Take NO CHANCES! This election is too important.

I so agree re "Take NO chances." Even super-bright pals of mine are so disgusted with both parties AND the voters that they might not vote, or vote in some weird way that could support a Trump win.

If it's true that we get the leaders we deserve, get ready for a Trump win. I.e., a Hitler win. With all that that implies.

With all that implies indeed, and I hope the likes of c4p get EXACTLY what they're praying for if so. It would serve them right.

The Republican party is dead. The Drumpf party has taken over. It is unbelievable how reporters, hosts, supporters, supposed leaders of the old Rethug party like Ryan, McConnell etc. are hopeless and helpless when confronted with a serial liar, an ignorant, failed businessman.

Those followers, endorsers, have NO ability to deny, regroup, no Plan B for dealing with the bombastic persona. How in the hell could we expect that party to deal with real threatening issues in the world? The same way they always have - leave the problems for the Democrats when the Democrats regain the office. Look at history - that is the way it has always been when the Rethugs have taken us to war, spent us into a hole, etc. etc. etc. etc.
The Rethugs GROW the government, spend money they don't have and then blame the Democrats for not cleaning up the mess quickly enough once the Progressives are in office.

As far as I'm concerned, the GOP deserves every bit of this and you're right. Look at history; it's all there to how we got here! Why more people can't see this absolutely fries me, but they're more concerned about the SF QB that refuses to stand and Gabby Douglas didn't put her hand over her heart for the anthem. GMAFB. Sick to death of it.

It's already too late in many states to change the ballots.

We do not have direct presidential elections - we vote for Electoral College delegates, and they elect the president. If a candidate were to die or withdraw prior to their vote, they could still cast their vote for someone else, at least in theory. While the EC itself is Constitutionally created, it seems the rules for individual delegates are drafted by the individual states. And what if delegates fail to follow state law - does that nullify their vote in the federal EC balloting? Until this century, these things ran by common sense, but the modern Republican party is very capable of disrupting that history.

    1. @10:08 -- You've raised some good questions and we should not think the GOP won't do anything, even if illegal, to "win" the election (Trump notwithstanding!). There could be no elected President for some time, pending Supreme court action (a stalemate the way the numbers stand)... Would Obama continue to be President?

      Down the rabbit hole, indeed.

Barbara Carlson, don't get what situation we could not have a president for "some time" or "pending Supreme court action". Are you suggesting the Republicans are going to kill Hillary?

Well even if they did, there's a process that doesn't involve the Supreme Court or the office being vacant. Each party has rules to replace if a candidate dies before the general election. If the presumptive winner dies before the Electoral College votes, the states have laws how the electors shall vote. The 12th amendment tells us what happens if there's a tie in the electoral college: the House of Representatives chooses the president - each state having 1 vote - and the Senate chooses the vice president. The 20th amendment tells us who will be sworn in as president if the president-elect dies before the inauguration: the vice president elect becomes the president.

  9. I can't see them replacing him... okay, maybe they could garner the votes in the RNC to do so... but I can't see Trump giving up at this point. He's got too much of himself invested in the process; also, to resign would be to declare himself a quitter. I know that in the unlikely event that he does quit, he'll announce that Hillary gets the position "from default." Never that she's smarter than he is, more knowledgeable and experienced. He's already been setting up a scenario in which he can declare that he lost because of election malfeasance and/or cheating. He'll never accept that a woman just plain beat the socks off him.

He'll continue the campaign if for no other reason than he's still got 9-10 weeks to make money off campaign donations.

For him, this is a profitable venture.

I thought the date had passed where they could get another name on the ballot in any states? August 20?

I THINK he made that comment during the primaries, not after he 'won.' He thinks he's too HUGE to lose. He will not drop out.

Put on your thinking cap and give this a reasonableness test. It's only in the primary when states are voting at different times that delegate counts can show a candidate can't win enough remaining delegates to win the nomination.

In the general election when we all vote the same day, probabilities of winning can be calculated based on polls, but there is no poll or group of polls that can definitively say Trump can't win. Remember how Clinton had an 80% chance of winning Michigan on primary day?

betcha that tawd or track shoved the b*tch into that rock fireplace. Out of self-defense. She's been known to attack people in her drugged out stupors. Hell, Brsitol could have even done this. again. Violence is a feature of the household been that way for years.

They bought him, he broke them, too bad. I doubt we'll see the GOP survive in it's present state should he win, but hey, he watches the shows and knows more than the generals do. His other superpower is "I Will Fix".
