Former Bernie Sanders supporter admits that he allowed himself to be brainwashed by Republican anti-Hillary propaganda.

Courtesy of Social Justice for All:

Let me be as candid and transparent as possible: I was a very strong supporter of Bernie Sanders, and until the past four weeks, held out great hope that he would become our next President. Over the course of the past month, I have had to do a great deal of reflecting and ask myself where does this seemingly irrational antipathy for Hillary Clinton come from? Why have I participated in it? After doing some research and looking hard at systemic misogyny, I have had to confront myself with the truth that I bought into a narrative about Hillary Clinton that has been produced, packaged, and perpetuated by mostly the GOP with the help of many democrats and independents.

This narrative is a 30-year-old vilification of a woman who is bright, independent, wealthy, and powerful — a woman who asks for what she wants and needs. How very dare you, Ms. Clinton? How dare you have a mind of your own? How dare you be bright and powerful? How dare you ask for what you want and need? Don’t you know these rights are still exclusively for white, Christian, cisgender, able-bodied, heterosexual men?

My research indicates that the reality — the facts (I realize facts are immaterial when talking to many Trump supporters) — are that Hillary Clinton is one of the most honest politicians tracked by the Pulitzer Prize winning fact-checking project Politifact.

I never tire of sharing this graphic.
The author sums up his remarks thusly:

I truly believe that Hillary and her platform are beneficial to targeted communities: people of color, people in poverty, people with disabilities, veterans, LGBTQ people, and all of the intersecting identities thereof. She is a hard-working, fundamentally honest person for whom — as she so nicely framed it — “the service part has always come easier than the public part.”

This article is actually from the beginning of this month, but I thought it important enough to share with all of you this morning.

You see the thing that all of us who support Hillary have had to contend with is this deeply ingrained belief that Hillary is untrustworthy, a liar, a cheat, etc.

I actually came up against that with my own daughter who was adamant that Hillary was deeply, deeply flawed.

However when I asked her for examples she kept resorting to responses like "You just know by looking at her," or "You just feel it," and "Everything she says feels like a lie."

In the end she really could not provide any factual examples (Except the Bosnia sniper story. That really was bullshit.), in the end she had to admit that most of her "feelings" about Hillary's trustworthiness were the result of the opinions of her friends, and not really based on actual empirical evidence.

The thing that is so frustrating is that these opinions are baked into the narrative about Hillary Clinton.

And even after you reveal that the bakers were the folks at Fox News, or The Drudge Report, or Info Wars it is still a struggle to undo that perception and correct all of those lies.

Which of course is exactly what those bakers were counting on when they first fired up the ovens.

Good article and I am so happy to read someone admit this.

My intense dislike of Trump, revulsion really, has come because of what I have heard him say over and over. He alone is the reason so many fear and dislike him.

Not the same for Hillary. Since her husband's administration she has been the target of the right wing --- she was correct: there has been a right wing conspiracy and for decades now. No wonder so many feel as they do. The Republicans have been successful, but it does not mean they are correct. The big shame is that the "real" media has fallen to the level of Fox News. Shame on all of them!!!!!!

Lol. Trumps hands over on a silver platter all of inequities. Hillary has been maligned by the right for some 30 odd years and all of it is proven propaganda. Any critical thinking human-no matter what their political leaning-ought to be able to conclude that Hillary Clinton has what it takes to be president. Unless, you have a problem with women in powerful positions.

Yeah, Gryphen-I am a card carrying life long Democrat who has voted in every election at every level since I was old enough to vote. And I have never voted for a Republican for President. So, other than the few times when a Republican was the better candidate at state or local level, I think I have been a pretty good Democrat.
I see voters on both sides trying to spin their candidates corruption into something palatable. Like I said, two sides of the same dirty coin that has been in too many filthy pockets.

The thing is that I had the same concerns you have so I deeply researched (original documents) the claims against Hillary, and they are false. Because I did that, I know that you did not. You are speaking from an emotional tie to the false memes about her. This election has brought out the worst misogyny that I have ever seen in this patriarchal country, and she is the target. You are not thinking rationally or objectively, and you are supporting the persecution of women.

    7. Anonymous8:36 AM

8:01, please tell me where exactly you were able to access original documents to do deep research on Hillary?
I have read many stories in newspapers, online and watched many national broadcasts regarding the Clintons over the past 20+ yeats, but I have never had access to original documents to separate truth from lies. If I knew where to find such documentation, I would gladly read it. I did not realize that I am not thinking rationally or objectively. I certainly have no desire to support the persecution of women...

I'm not 6:38 but I've been voting for 42 years and I'm DISGUSTED with this particular campaign.

I have never voted for a Republican in my life and never will. That doesn't mean I'll automatically vote for the Democrat. Nor vote green.

So I might just skip the presidential choices altogether for the first time in my life.

Assuming I am a first time voter, naive, stupid, lying, full of "bullshit", goes beyond insulting. And there is plenty of bullying and insulting on this board to go around. I doubt it is unique to this board either. There is a certain HUBRIS in Hillary Clinton's supporters.

This attitude supports what the Democratic Party has become. In other words no better than the Republican Party.

No one is allowed to exercise their right to vote unless they agree with YOU. Apparently both the Democrats and the Republicans have problems with a citizen's free right to choose under our Constitution when it interferes with their candidate's chances of winning.

Status quo should be protected at all costs, including attacking your own. That includes the Democratic Party attacking Democratic candidates and I am *NOT* talking about Bernie Sanders.

The Democratic Party has become an ugly mirror of the Republican Party. Two sides of the same corrupt coin.

Those of us that want change are accused of being "liberal Teabaggers" wanting to destroy the party like what is happening to the Republicans.

Could it be we are simply Obama supporters? I was campaigning for him to be president in 2004, right after the DNC speech. Don't talk bullshit to ME about being a lifelong Democrat.

Well, if the Democrats won't CHANGE, then maybe that's what should happen. Because they aren't representing what a larger and larger portion of their voters want.

I can't wait until Hillary turns back into the right wing conservative that she has always been, signs the TPP, Fracking continues, the XL pipeline is approved, no change to college loans, college fees, Big Pharma continues to kill children by way of making an obscene profit, Wall St. and the insurance companies win and the American People lose.

I'll go hoarse shouting TOLD YOU SO!

And you brainwashed panty sniffers will still make excuses or bury your heads in the sand chanting "but I'm a life long Democrat and I support Hillary Clinton".

You'll still think you're so fucking righteous as our country goes down in flames. You'll never see that it was a Democratic torpedo.

Exactly! The misogyny is potent in this country. Even women have been brainwashed. Hard working women. My daughter also said the same thing. She had no real idea why she hated Hillary, only that she was untrustworthy. When pressed for a concrete reason my daughter's reasoning faltered. I then told her a long story of misogyny, political hate, the civil war, old memories die hard, etc. etc. She then admitted that she had not known all this and that she didn't really know Hillary other than the fact that she and Donald were two old white people. I then told her more so today than yesterday, that it is detrimental that she vote for Hillary because choosing Trump would be choosing Putin, bigotry, misogyny, going back to the 1950s, wiping out any memory of the sixies, seventies, eighties, ninties, and recently, 911. I explained the conspiracy theory craze, fascism, Hitler, things she should have known, and did know but didn't know her views of Hillary was being manipulated by a propaganda machine called Fox, Cnn, Nbc, Cbs, Abc, and the RNC.

Many of my American contemporaries (baby boomers all!) bemoan the fact that the American education system is failing the younger generations in placing too much emphasis on reciting the Pledge, singing the anthem etc., and not being taught the hows, whys and wherefors about their own government. Names, dates and places are not enough. Perhaps if students actually learned about gerrymandering, lobbyists, the fact that (by their own admission) members of congress use more than 75% of their time having to raise funds for their next election campaign instead of doing the work they're actually sent to Washington to do, maybe then they'd have a better understanding and put much more educated thought into what they see/hear from the media and march into the voting booth with the knowledge that they are participating wisely in the democracy their country espouses.

It's not going to matter if it was 1 or 30. The optics are bad and this time "I admit there's smoke. But I assure you there is no fire" isn't going to save her. Anonymous @11:24 AM all we've heard is that there were 30 emails found related to Benghazi. Why weren't we told what was in them if they are allegedly so important? It's likely they are much ado about nothing just as all the alleged scandals have been. Did it ever occur to you that Hillary never felt she was doing anything improper nor did she think she would be accused of doing something improper when she was merely doing the same as her two predecessors? Look at the Clinton Foundation, the AP took a small section of appointments, out of 1800 and then tried to sell everyone on the idea that half of her appts. were all people who had donated to the foundation. Nobody ever said a word when George H.W. Bush started his foundation when he was still in the White House accepting foreign donations, continuing to do so while his son was in the White House and yet the entire time refusing to make their donor list available, unlike the Clinton Foundation, whose donor list was available early on. Why the double standard? They have taken nothing from the foundation in the way of salary for themselves. They are highly rated by 2 different organizations, both non-partisan, that investigate charities for fraud. You and others like you are so determined to try to find something on Hillary that you believe anything you hear or read. As for Trump, he's told us who he is, we don't have to go back and read all the stories about his many lies, his stealing from employees and small business contractors in order to be convinced that he's unethical. Go ahead and keep your double standard. Hillary Clinton has been among the most admired women for 20 years running and your opinion won't change a damn thing.

The other thing about Hillary that made me realize it was all b.s. about her being manipulative and bitchy was that she's had most of her friends since college. Women who are nasty, manipulative bitches do not retain friends and employees for decades as Hillary has done. They all sing her praises. If more people had an open mind, they'd realize that she has been maligned, investigated and exonerated more than any other candidate in the history of our elections. That alone doesn't make her qualified to be President but her intelligence, dedication to her country and her abilities to do what needs to be done having been the Secretary of State, a Senator and a First Lady all make her one of the most qualified candidates we've ever had.

Any time we "just feel" that we don't trust someone, without data, with only our guts, any time we LOOK FOR REASONS TO HATE... that is bigotry.

Sexism and bigotry are unconscious. That is why it is so hard for us to see it in ourselves. If someone tells you, "I just don't trust her; I can tell she's lying..." they are speaking with unconscious bias. It is irrational, and it is for the person to deal with themselves.

The resistance against one's own prejudices is strong.... Americans will either get over their bullshit misogyny, or we'll all be trapped inside a prison of toxic masculinity with Trump. Truly a referendum this country needs to have, because I am damn sick and tired of bullshitters telling me they're not sexist, when I can see it from them (men and women), plain as day.

As a Canadian who has not been subjected to the 30-year campaign of the Right Wing against Hillary and Bill, I had the luxury to really look at Hillary's demeanor and interactions with people, listen to her speak with an opened mind and read about what she has actually accomplished. What I see is an honest, caring, hard-working, loyal, very intelligent person who has shown that she has the temperament, the qualifications and the experience to be one of your great presidents.

I can see through the innuendos, the propaganda, the spins, the unsubstantiated rumors, the distortions, the numerous investigations that never resulted in anything and the false narratives that are fed to the media daily. It's part of an enormous long-term effort by the Right-Wing (multiplied tenfold with the arrival of Stephen Bannon from Breitbart) to discredit her in order to prevent her from achieving her goals. Previously, it was legislation on health-care and other beneficial matters, now it's the Presidency.

By now, the propaganda has done its work and a large portion of the population has been manipulated to think the worst of Hillary Clinton regardless of the circumstances. It's mind-boggling to see that many of these same people are manipulated to put their trust in Donald Trump who actually has a well-documented history of shady deals, dishonesty and who is well on his way to perpetrating the biggest con of his career on the American people.

There are so many things wrong with Donald Trump that it's hard to know where to start. One thing is certain though, he is not doing this for altruistic reasons but to benefit himself, his need for power, adulation and you can get your bottom dollar that he will make money out of this endeavor one way or the other.

No one seems to believe that those that are not on the Hillary Bandwagon might have any other reason than that they are misogynists or "brainwashed" by the Republicans.

They don't believe it may be a decision that has more to do with her policies and her history on her voting choices than anything else.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/why-progressives-cautiously-optimistic-hillary-clinton_us_57b7951de4b0b51733a3a699?section=us_politics

"That has some progressives nervous that Clinton will take them for granted once in office, making their policy priorities disposable as well.

Many other veteran liberal insiders and activists, however, are unfazed by Clinton’s electoral strategy and bullish about her presidency. They believe that the candidacy of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) helped solidify a leftward shift in the party’s center of gravity that Clinton recognizes.

If Clinton is courting Mitt Romney voters, neoconservative thought leaders and Bernie Sanders supporters alike, whose core interests will she fight for once in office? She cannot please all of them at once, and with progressives lacking an alternative in the two-party system, she is more likely to view their priorities as expendable, the theory goes.

...the appointment of former Interior Secretary and Democratic Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar, as her transition chair, has spooked these same progressives. Salazar, now a lobbyist at Wilmer Hale, a powerful Washington law firm, is a staunch advocate of fracking and the Trans-Pacific Partnership ― twin progressive bugaboos ― with big business ties to match.

Progressives now fear Clinton is already repeating some of the Obama administration’s worst missteps. While liberals were basking in the historic glow of Obama’s presidency, Obama was appointing Department of Justice officials who would fail to indict any senior Wall Street executive for fraud in the wake of the financial crisis. He also allowed a top housing official left over from the Bush administration to hold up much-needed relief for distressed homeowners.

A key test for Clinton will be whether she re-nominates to the Supreme Court Merrick Garland, Obama’s centrist nominee who is stuck in limbo due to Republicans’ refusal to grant him nomination hearings.

The aide to a progressive house Democrat said Clinton is “even cool on Senate Democrats’ push to get her to renominate Garland,” indicating she is acutely aware of progressive trepidation about Garland."

Maybe it's time time to take off those rose colored glasses, get out of the kiddie pool and look an how you are going to hold Hillary's feet to the fire to follow through on those campaign promises she made to the skeptical and more progressive.

She *says* she still supports expanding Social Security, a public health insurance option, debt-free college and raising the federal minimum wage to at least $12.

She *appears* to oppose the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Tim Kaine truly does and always has.

Obama supported tax inversions and his education policy has sucked big ones for 8 years and still does. His appointment of Antonio Weiss failed so he just appointed him to a job that didn't require confirmation and now he's in charge of Puerto Rico's debt crisis.

Another test for Clinton will be if she continues that Wall Street friendly policy to the detriment of the American people.

No. We aren't all misogynists or brainwashed or naive youth. Some of us just PAY ATTENTION more than others.

"whose core interests will she fight for once in office?"

That's easy: the oligarchs she's been hobnobbing with in the Hamptons.

I didn't cut and paste anything. I am not the OP. You show yourself to be a low information voter, who throws insults, but brings nothing of substance to the thread.

The lazy and mentally challenged use personal insults rather than provide reasoned debate opposition with information to bolster their point of view.

It's just easier to call someone a whiny baby or call it drivel.

For the still frustrated Bernie Sanders supporters who've been commenting here today, my advice is to "get over it." You've spent about a year thinking nothing but villainous thoughts about Hillary Clinton, you should now learn some facts about her accomplishments. It's clear that you paid no attention to the Democratic Convention when the focus was on the elected nominee.

In this vital election, anyone who is a registered voter and who would normally vote for a Democrat but refuses to do so because Hillary Clinton is the candidate, you might as well be casting your ballot for Donald Trump.

I am quite sick of the mantra that I can't get over Sanders or that I don't do my research or that I failed to watch (both) conventions.
I guess if I don't see politics the way you do, that automatically makes me an obsessed Bernie bro, deaf and illiterate and I probably watched reality TV when you smart Democrats watched the Hillary show.

Ah, the intelligent and reasoned "Grow the fuck up." argument.

Yeah, right up there with whiny baby.

That will certainly put them in their place and get them to vote for Hillary.

Sure you don't want to throw in a threat that if they don't vote for Hillary it's a defacto vote for Trump? A little FEAR mongering couldn't hurt, right?

Be sure to call any reasonable doubts they might have "drivel". That will certainly convince them.

I visited an old friend last week who called herself a Democrat up until recently. She gave me those vague "I just can't stand the Clintons", and "What about the Clinton Foundation?" I asked her why she knew anything about the Clinton Foundation, and she said, "From the news". I told her, "No, because it's a 501 (c)(3) and their financials have been available to the public all along. What does she know about Trumps financials other than that he has made his living bankrupting himself and everyone he does business with? Where are his financials? Where are his tax returns?" Nothing.

OTOH, her new fiance tells me that Huma Abedin is a member of "The Islamic Sisterhood", and she & Hillary are lesbian lovers. That particular bait I did not bite at, because frankly, I found the man to be terrifying, and I was in his home - without her there. Oh - and he's a "Gnostic".

    This is a thing now?

Anonymous @1:23PM you keep saying that you don't care what other people do so why are you so invested in spending time insulting other posters on here? I wouldn't subject myself to C4P unless I was a masochist. Maybe you can find somewhere else where you'll be happier.

@Ibwilliamsi I've considered myself lucky not to have come across anyone who is voting for Trump because I don't know how I would react or if I could keep my mouth shut. I can understand not saying anything, however, when you're in the home of someone else. Huma Abedin has been working with Hillary since she was First Lady and Hillary has often said she's like a second daughter. Of course, the sick RWNJ's feel the need to make up stories about any Democrat that dares to challenge them. We all need to vote BLUE if we want to keep Trump out of the White House and take care of our country. He is absolutely clueless and has no idea what's going on around the world. Hopefully it will come out in the debates and that will be the final straw.
