Marco Rubio does not care if the Zika virus might give your baby birth defects, no abortions. You know, cause God.

Courtesy of Politico:

Sen. Marco Rubio said Saturday that he doesn’t believe a pregnant woman infected with the Zika virus should have the right to an abortion — even if she had reason to believe the child would be born with severe microcephaly.

"I understand a lot of people disagree with my view – but I believe that all human life is worthy of protection of our laws. And when you present it in the context of Zika or any prenatal condition, it’s a difficult question and a hard one," Rubio told POLITICO.

"But if I’m going to err, I’m going to err on the side of life."

For those who don't know people with microcephaly are often referred to as "pinheads" and they have a whole slew of challenges related to the condition such as developmental delays, hearing loss, vision problems, difficulty feeding, and seizures, to name a few.

That is of course if they survive, which those with a severe form of microcephany often do not.

The costs of caring for a child with these problems can be astronomical and typically parents require support from the state and federal governments. (Programs by the way that Rubio and his party are constantly trying to strip of their funding.)

No woman should be asked to carry a child to term if they are diagnosed with this birth defect, nor should any family be burdened with raising such a child unless they have chosen to do so.

Once again I work in the system and deal with children with similar challenges, and I would say that there are really only a very small population of the people out there who are equipped to deal with the problems and obstacles that present themselves when raising a child with such severe special needs.

Perhaps Marco Rubio and his wife would be willing to adopt few of the children born with mircocephany and he can show everybody how it is done.

But we know that will never happen. Don't we?

I saw this on cnn this morning and read it carefully to see if he made any mention of providing support for people forced to give birth to severely handicapped babies. Nope, nothing. He doesn't seem to care about the pain and suffering that the children will experience. Pence holds the same draconian views.

As a result the HIV rate skyrockets - because he also refused to fund needle exchanges for addicts. And he won't fund methadone clinics or Naloxin either. Hard core fanatical Catholics like Rubio rarely talk about it, but they believe that women should be home taking care of kids, not working, keeping quiet, have their heads covered, and should submit to their husbands 100%

No career, no contraceptives, and if you get pregnant and have eclampsia and are about to die, no abortion because white Christian males have the final say in all matters regarding female genitalia and reproductive functions.

Rubio sounds like a Taliban leader, forcing a woman to have a severely deformed, disabled, and hopelessly suffering baby, and then forcing the family to deal with this tragedy when they likely can't afford even the medical costs

All based on the teachings of Paul of Tarsus, a fanatical women hating unethical, hatefully misogynistic Pharisee that had his Iron age tribal ignorance codified and enshrined as 1/2 of the New Testament.

Donald Trump was their worst mistake in having him as their candidate for POTUS.

Lisa Murkowski is up for reelection in Alaska and is a 'do nothing' member of our current U.S.Congress! She has come out in support of The Don - go figure!!!

I sincerely hope that John McCain loses his reelection bid in AZ. It's time he retired too.

Hopefully, Alaska will turn blue in November and get rid of the majority Republicans in Congress and the Alaska State Legislature.

Also, Eagle River needs to vote out Anna Fairclough (Republican), who is in the Alaska Legislature and is in charge of one of the Committees that has spent our money! She's also married now - to a guy in Juneau! Does she actually live with him in Juneau or in Eagle River?

This crisis may actually help the pro-choice cause.

People never think they or their daughters will have an unwanted pregnancy and if they do well they should be punished for having sex.

Being faced with a Down Syndrome child is usually associated with an older mother and that can be prevented. It's not really an immediate threat to most of us (or doesn't feel like it) Plus many Down Syndrome children live somewhat productive lives (with proper therapy).

But this - the possibility of being bitten by a mosquito when pregnant or your husband being bitten and transmitting it to you when pregnant. That is real and that is a threat everyone is at risk at. Now it's personal.

There is a very real risk people for everyday people, not just the sinners or poor.

We may see a change of heart of a lot of voters regarding someone that touts no abortion EVAR

I think you have a very valid point. This is something that can affect ANYONE, even those who profess to lead exemplary, holier-than-thou lives and would NEVER face an unexpected or unwanted pregnancy (at least that they would admit to).

In addition, the symptoms of microcephaly can be severe, and decimate the lives of the families facing this heartwrenching disability.

      - shortened life span
      - mild to severe developmental delays and cognitive impairment
      - seizures
      - problems with vision and hearing
      - problems with speech
      - problems with feeding due to impaired ability to suck and swallow
      - problems with moving and controlling arms and legs and inability to walk
      - problems with balance
      - short stature
      - high pitched cry and inability to be soothed
      - hyperactivity

For those children who survive to adulthood, the astronomical costs associated for caring for them will increase significantly once they reach the age of 21 and can no longer receive services from their school district. Even those with minimal cognitive impairment may be unable to live independently, and require care and supervision for the rest of their lives.

Those with more severe cases may die in infancy or childhood and need round-the-clock care for their most basic needs. Parents who are faced with the overwhelming needs of a microcephalic infant often don't have the time or energy to properly care for any other children they may have or even to care for themselves.

It can be a short, painful life for the affected child, the parent, and any siblings in the family. But, sure, let's preserve the 'sanctity of life' without ever considering the QUALITY of life that the entire family will have as a result of these theocrats' arrogant pronouncements.

Don't blame Lil Marco for his lack of empathy.

In the Conservative mindset, compassion - like love or S&H Green Stamps - are a fixed and limited resource.

In that view, if you waste your compassion on someone elses' misfortune you risk a possible future compassion deficit in the event Jeebus chooses you or your immediate family for some misfortune of your own.

Better, then, to hoard your compassion, empathy, love and Green Stamps for your own benefit, as is commanded in the Bible somewhere in the Book of Endometriosis.

Naturally, if Mrs. Lil Marco was facing a prenatal microcephaly diagnosis, it's entirely plausible that "a very, very difficult, regrettable and ultimately compassionate" choice could be considered if not quietly and privately pursued. That's just how Xtian Right Wingers roll.

At some point, deciding not to bring a severely deformed child into the world should be looked at as being merciful. Especially when the deformity is n the brain, when the deformity keeps the brain from developing.

It is monstrous to think anybody has the right to tell a woman, or a couple (which most often this will be - it will be couples who want to have a child to raise and who they had all the hopes in the world for) that they MUST bear and raise such a child if their doctor gives them the worst news that they could possibly ever get in their lives.

Why would anyone expect a woman to carry to full term a fetus in this condition? It is straight-up sadism. She was judged harshly nonetheless. A church in my community harshly judged an infertile woman who had to decide how many fetuses she would carry to term, because she allowed some to die. Nobody should have a right to block anyone else's decisions regarding reproductive choices. An fetus has no rights. Vote only for pro-choice candidates. Biology is not destiny.

This all brings to mind the case in 1962 involving Sherri Finkbine of Arizona, pregnant and who had taken Thalidomide, recently linked to severe birth defects. She tried to obtain a legal abortion but her claim was dismissed by a judge unwilling to get involved in such a decision.

So, she went to Sweden to have the abortion which showed that the fetus was badly deformed. It was a case that brought much publicity and it sparked the abortion reform movement.

Unlike the current pregnant Zika sufferers facing possible birth defects, Finkbine was able to afford to go to Sweden for her abortion. With people like Rubio and other anti-choice zealots characterizing those who might choose abortion rather than bring a severely disabled child into the world as evil sinners, we seem to be revisiting the Finkbine scenario from over fifty years ago.
