Al Gore, campaigning for Hillary Clinton, reminds millennials of the importance of one vote.

Courtesy of Politico:

Campaigning with Hillary Clinton in Miami, Gore highlighted two messages he wanted to share with the former secretary of state’s supporters.

“No. 1, when it comes to the most urgent issue facing our country and the world, the choice in this election is extremely clear. Hillary Clinton will make solving the climate crisis a top national priority,” Gore said. “Very important.”

Donald Trump, whom Gore referred to as “her opponent,” would take America “toward a climate catastrophe,” he said.

“Here’s my second message: Your vote really, really, really counts — a lot. You can consider me as an exhibit A of that group. Now, for those of you who are younger than 25, you might not remember the election of 2000 and what happened here in Florida and across the country,” Gore said, prompting boos from the crowd.

“For those of you older than 25, I heard you murmuring just now. But take it from me, it was a very close election,” Gore said, as supporters began to chant “You won! You won!”

I was watching this on TV yesterday and I am not ashamed to admit to the wave of emotion I felt when the crowd started chanting "You won!"

In fact I even tweeted about it.
I reference the 2000 election fairly frequently here on IM.

And the reason is that it was when I really had my political awakening.

I was not necessarily the biggest fan of Al Gore back then, but it was clear to me that he was a vastly superior choice than George W. Bush, and when he had the elections stolen from him  I was apoplectic.

And then everything that happened afterward kept pouring salt in to that wound.

To this day it is why I cannot stand third party candidates and have no patience for idiots who "vote their conscience."

When there are only two viable choices you man up (I would say "woman up" but you ladies really seem to have your shit together this election cycle.) and make the best choice for the country.

THAT is how you keep a George W. Bush out of office, and save thousands of lives, and that is how you keep a Donald Trump out of office and save the future of this country.

Instead of saying "you ladies," how about "you people of the female persuasion"?

I'm with you 110% on this post. (and most othe posts!) I just cringe a little when "ladies" is used to describe people like me.

Ladies is a term of courtesy. Back when people were taught manners.

As for people of the female persuasion that just sounds pretentious. Plus sexist unless you also say people of the male persuasion as well. Nothing like a mouthful replacing a single word. Unless you *are* going for pretentious.

    I like this ;-)
Republican nominee Donald Trump told a crowd in Florida to go cast their votes on November 28—a full 20 days after Election Day, which is Tuesday, Nov. 8.

“We’re doing something that’s incredible, it’s a movement,” Trump said. “But if we don’t win, all it is is a little asterisk in history. There’s never been anything like this so go and register, make sure you get out and vote Nov. 28.”

Since Trump is never ever wrong, I hope his idiots do miss out. Save us all a lot of trouble if we can call Florida early.

I read one interviewer encountered a Trump supporter who was convinced that Trump was president because he already voted for him. The interviewer tried to explain him EIGHT TIMES that that was the primary and he would have to vote again. The supporter was having none of it. He had already voted, done deal.

Would that all of his supporters were as adamant. And the rest do as they're told and vote on November 28.

Al Gore was made into a ridicule figure by those who are threatened by his stance on global warming. They know he's right, and they are wrong but it's the bottom dollar they are worried about. Not the fact that our world is being flooded more and more each year. That's denial. I have always admired Gore, and did not vote for a long time during the Bush years because I was sure that my vote would be stolen. My bad. Obama restored my faith that our vote does count. Al Gore has always had my respect. I am reading his book Assault on Reason which was published back in 2007. George W. Bush was the precursor to Donald Trump. The Republicans played with fire and Trump is the result. Sad to see, and horrible to witness that by having someone like Trump who doesn't respect any boundaries, he has now knowingly or unwittingly invited the likes of Putin who also knows no boundaries and is scarier than hell itself.

  5. I think a lot of us had that moment of reckoning as you did in 2000. For me the "what ifs" have always rotted in my brain, mostly in terms of what could have been prevented.

Nader is still a pariah in my world. His damn narcissistic ambitions set up the whole damn mess. I view Bernie and his crowd with same lens. Third parties are fine, but by god earn the right to be there by affecting change on the local level and building. Don't mess with millions of lives for the sake of thinly constructed principals. Looks and sounds great on paper, but when you start to put the damn thing through practical application it folds like a house of cards.

But what about the people who believed this garbage, the ones for whom it was a lifeline in a world they no longer recognize or understand? What about the ones for whom it explained their anger and ennobled their resentment at a culture that has changed without their permission, a nation to which they feel less connected — and in which they feel less relevant — with every sunrise? Where do they go and what do they do when Donald Trump implodes?

    Getting Violent

...It is a very, very dangerous step when a presidential nominee openly threatens to jail his opponent if he wins. It's no less dangerous when a candidate pushes the idea that an election will be stolen and lays the groundwork for resisting the result. That's happening. It is difficult to overstate the societal benefit of being able to take it almost as an absolute given and assumption that no matter how intense and close-fought an election gets, virtually everyone will accept the result the day after. Undermining that assumption is of a piece with introducing into the political arena the idea that people who lose election might lose more than the election: loss of money, freedom, or worse etc.

The good news is that it now seems possible that Clinton's margin will be large enough even to convince many Trump supporters that he legitimately lost. But there's no guarantee of that. And in his currently expanding war against the GOP, we're seeing - if we needed more evidence - that Trump will act in the most destructive ways imaginable when he's losing and angry.

I'll put a pin in the discussion for now. But this is something to watch very closely as the next thirty days unfold. It is a very, very big deal. Trump has been making this argument explicitly for weeks. As I said, we're had the voter fraud racket for years. It's never been weaponized like this As the pressure on him grows and his own anger mounts there's every reason to think he'll keep upping the ante.

I admittedly have been a little bit on the fence about climate change. I watched Gore's speech on TV and he explained it plainly how man contributes to climate change. That's just what I needed to hear. That's what MORE people need to hear from our politicians! Thank you Al Gore and HIllary. They all should be speaking in depth about it. Also it was well pointed out that even though China is the world's biggest contributor to pollution that we are in a race to be the world's clean energy leader and China is already ahead of us on it. That is just one reason why education is so important if we want to remain the world leader in anything. It sure sounded like to me that Hillary may appoint Gore to a very important position and that is a win win for the planet.
