Atomic scientists reset their symbolic "Doomsday Clock" to its closest time to midnight in 64 years on Thursday, saying the world was closer to catastrophe due to threats such as nuclear weapons, climate change and Donald Trump's election as U.S. president.
Its hands were moved to two minutes and 30 seconds to midnight, from three minutes.
"The Doomsday Clock is closer to midnight than it's ever been in the lifetime of almost everyone in this room," Lawrence Krauss, the bulletin's chair, told a news conference in Washington.
The clock was last set this close to midnight in 1953, marking the start of the nuclear arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union. Thursday's reset was the first since 2015.
Physicist Lawrence Krauss laid blame for this decision squarely at the feet pf Doanld Trump and his puppet master Vladimir Putin.
Just when you thought the news could not get any worse.
Believe me things are gonna get worse! A lot worse!
ReplyDelete...Just hours after White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Donald Trump’s proposed border wall would be funded by a 20 percent tax on goods coming into the U.S., the administration is backing away, telling reporters that they were just suggesting “one way” to fund it.
ReplyDelete...It’s clear the White House doesn’t have a clue what they’re doing – and it seems to span all levels of the administration. Instead of offering thoughtful and realistic proposals, they’re just making it up as they go along.
If there is a massive, negative response to one of the flags they run up the flagpole, they quickly pull it down and start over again, pretending they never really made the suggestion in the first place.
The great Paul Krugman’s reaction to the walk-back may have been even better than the countless negative is responses to Spicer’s initial proposal.

They're all trial balloons.
DeleteTrump says shit like the 20% tariff, then sniffs the wind. Too much blowback and they walk it back. Not much reaction and he goes ahead with an executive order.
You could chalk it up to his promise of the people being in charge.
But it's more like he is totally clueless and flailing around, relying on public cues for his decision making. Not a very reliable way to make policy.
What will be interesting is when he or the public disagree with the BananaRepublicans. Then he'll be torn as to which way to flop.
What a loser. Total maroon.

Trump dogged by insecurity over popular vote, media coverage
Donald Trump holds the most powerful office in the world. But he's dogged by insecurity over his loss of the popular vote in the election and a persistent frustration that the legitimacy of his presidency is being challenged by Democrats and the media, aides and associates say.
...The bad press over the weekend has not allowed Trump to "enjoy" the White House as he feels he deserves, according to one person who has spoken with him.
The result has been a full display of Trump's propensity for exaggeration and more. During an appearance at the CIA Saturday, he wrongly said the inaugural crowds gathered on the National Mall stretched to the Washington Monument, despite clear photo evidence to the contrary. And during a reception with lawmakers from both parties Monday night, he repeated his false assertion that millions of illegal immigrants provided Hillary Clinton's margin in the popular vote.
It's not the first time that Trump, who is known to be both thin-skinned and dedicated to polishing his public image, has become fixated on details that challenge his success.

ReplyDeleteSecretary of State
Donald Trump has given Democrats an immense gift with his latest Wall cave. As I've noted, Mexico paying for the Trump Wall has never been mainly about budgets or money. It's about dominance and humiliation. Countries defeated in war pay war indemnities. They are forced to agree to unequal treaties. Trump is all about dominance politics and humiliation. Forcing a foreign country to pay for a wall to keep its own citizens out of another country is almost the definition of national humiliation, as the Mexicans have themselves made abundantly. Although less deadly, it's symbolically comparable to how China forces families to pay for the bullets used to execute their relatives.
ReplyDeleteAnd yet here we are, one week in and Trump has managed his colossal self-own. Who's paying for it? We're paying for it! Or, who's paying for it? Mexico! How? On layaway! Or with some kind of forced promissory note which they themselves reject and say they'll never pay. Trump has made all of America into the first stiffed Trump vendor of his administration.

Trump Demanded Photos From Park Service Head To Prove Crowd Size
President Donald Trump demanded that the acting National Park Service director produce additional photographs of crowds at his inauguration to prove his claims about attendance numbers, according to a report published Thursday by the Washington Post.
In a phone call the day after his inauguration, Trump personally ordered acting National Park Service director Michael T. Reynolds to produce additional photographs of crowds at the ceremony, according to the report citing three anonymous sources with knowledge of the conversation.
The President thought that the photographs might prove that press had deliberately underreported crowd sizes at his inauguration.
Reynolds obtained additional aerial photographs of the ceremony for Trump, but these did not prove the President's claims of "a million, a million and a half" attendees, according to the Washington Post.
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/trump-demanded-inauguration-crowd-size-photos-from-park-service
Reynolds was taken aback by Trump’s request, but he did secure some additional aerial photographs and forwarded them to the White House through normal channels in the Interior Department, the people who notified The Post said. The photos, however, did not prove Trump’s contention that the crowd size was upward of 1 million.

DeleteTrump Team Still Doesn't Seem to Understand They're in the White House Now
ReplyDelete...In the meantime, Steve Bannon took to the New York Times to up the ante on the White House war with the media:
“The media should be embarrassed and humiliated and keep its mouth shut and just listen for a while,” Mr. Bannon said during a telephone call. “I want you to quote this,” Mr. Bannon added. “The media here is the opposition party. They don’t understand this country. They still do not understand why Donald Trump is the president of the United States.”
....Mr. Bannon, who rarely grants interviews to journalists outside of Breitbart News, the provocative right-wing website he ran until last August, was echoing comments by Mr. Trump this weekend, when the president said he was in “a running war” with the media and called journalists “among the most dishonest people on earth.”
Actually, I think we all understand just fine why Donald Trump is president: because he ran a racist, boorish, epically mendacious campaign and Republicans all decided to go along with it. And even that wouldn't have been enough if Trump hadn't gotten some additional help from his pals James Comey and Vladimir Putin. In any case, to the extent that the media is dedicated to exposing lies and reporting the truth, it is indeed the opposition party to people like Bannon.
Then there's this:
...And finally by a 42/39 spread Trump voters think he should be allowed to have a private email server:

White House Burns $5 Million When It Cancels ACA Enrollment Ads
With six days to go until open enrollment for the 2017 ACA year closes, the White House has pulled the plug on ads, which were bought and paid for encouraging people to enroll.
Politico:
The Trump administration has pulled the plug on all Obamacare outreach and advertising in the crucial final days of the 2017 enrollment season, according to sources at Health and Human Services and on Capitol Hill.
Even ads that had already been placed and paid for have been pulled, the sources told POLITICO.
"President Trump is signaling he's the new sheriff," said Rep. Chris Collins, (R-N.Y.), the president's top congressional ally. "He's been elected with a mandate. He's not going to tolerate his employees contradicting and undermining his mandate to get this country going in another direction."
Those ads were paid for and the money will not be refunded. That's $5 million the "sheriff" squandered because he's a vindictive, bitter, hateful old man.

I'm still seeing them every hour on Comedy Central and TBS, FX, FXX, and Bravo so not sure where they cancelled them. It's the standard ad reminding people to sign up by 1/31.
DeleteGood, maybe trump has never heard of those channels.
DeleteI was thinking about how crazy our media is today. I remember vividly when Clinton first ran in the 90s. People descended on hot springs and areas trying to find info. What one needs to know is, hot springs AR where he grew up is possibly the most corrupt place in the country. Except Hillary's hometown of Chicago.
ReplyDeleteI feel confident in saying had bill ran for the first time now, he wouldn't have made it a day.
Hot Springs AR? Most corrupt place in America?
DeleteAside from cornering the market on foreign-made banjos that they sell as "made in the USA" and the highest level of inbred people in America, I doubt that there is much more corruption in Hot Springs, AR.
8:12 pm Right... I see what you did there. But nope, not buying the shit you are selling.
DeleteFirst, the number one and number two most corrupt places in the country are not Chicago and Hot Springs.
Second, where you grew up has not got much to do with whether you are corrupt or not. It has much more to do with your integrity and your character. I think both Bill and Hillary have scads more integrity and strength of character than the current idiot in charge.
Third, the news media is not tougher today than in the 90s. In fact, that's one of the problems that allowed the current dangerous circus act to get into power.
So, you are confident? Right.
"had bill ran..."
DeleteRun along, amateur.
You are a moron.
DeleteHe's gone so far off the rails that there must be a self-correction regarding his comportment while holding the highest office in America.
ReplyDeleteIf that self-correction does not happen then others of saner minds, regardless of what we consider to be their terrible right-wing agenda, will make certain that he is rendered powerless, however that may manifest.
just selling fear...
ReplyDeleteYes selling fear at the weekly gun shows for the last 20 yrs.
DeleteAfter ranting about his crowd size and accusations that he packed the crowd with his own supporters, Trump said, “The media, much of the media, not all of it is dishonest. Honestly, it’s fake news. It’s fake. They make things up.”
ReplyDeleteTrump went on to call the media liars, and follow it up by lying again about his crowd size.
In the view of the President Of The United States, any media organization that fact checks him, or points out that he is lying is engaging in fake news, and making things up. By most CIA accounts, the applause that was coming from the crowd during Trump’s CIA speech came from the group that the President brought with him. There is photographic and crowd scientist evidence that Donald Trump’s inauguration was attended by an estimated 169,000-250,000.
The President and his administration are telling lies or making misleading statements on a daily basis, and anyone who fact checks them is labeled fake news.
Journalists and media organizations should now understand what Trump and his supporters mean when they claim that a story is “fake news.”
In Trump world, fake news is a synonym for facts that disagree with what the President is saying.
According to Trump, reality is fake news, and every responsible media outlet in America is fake news if they debunk his lies.

After Months Of Concern Trolling, Trump Proves He Really Thinks Chicago Murders Are HILARIOUS
http://addictinginfo.org/2017/01/26/after-months-of-concern-trolling-trump-proves-he-really-thinks-chicago-murders-are-hilarious/
Steve Bannon has a clear, strong agenda for Trump’s relationship with the press. The far-right white supremacist just did a rare interview with The New York Times, which is ironic considering how much he seems to hate the press, and he took the opportunity to paint the press as an incompetent enemy. In that interview, he said, point-blank:
“The media should be embarrassed and humiliated and keep its mouth shut and just listen for a while.”
Listen to what? More of Trump’s lies? The press should let his lies go unchallenged? Just for the record, the press does not like being told they can’t challenge public figures. The press does not like being muzzled.
So, one member of the press, CNN’s Jake Tapper, responded to that with something thoughtful and eloquent, yet appropriately brief. Watch below:
It’s brilliant in the face of Bannon saying, “Sit down, shut up, and let him lie all he wants.” That’s really what it comes down to – letting the administration put forth unchecked lies so they can create the reality they want. In fact, Bannon actually told the Times to quote him on this:
“I want you to quote this,” Mr. Bannon added. “The media here is the opposition party. They don’t understand this country. They still do not understand why Donald Trump is the president of the United States.” [emphasis mine]
So the media should shut up. Stop with the criticism. Stop with the challenges. It hurts Donald’s little feefees and we just can’t have that.
Too bad for them that the press isn’t going to listen.
