Donald Trump's national security adviser, Mike Flynn, resigns. Update!

Courtesy of CNN:

Embattled White House national security adviser Michael Flynn resigned Monday night, an abrupt end to a brief tenure.

His departure came just after reports surfaced the Justice Department warned the Trump administration last month that Flynn misled administration officials regarding his communications with the Russian ambassador to the United States and was potentially vulnerable to blackmail by the Russians.

"I inadvertently briefed the Vice President-elect and others with incomplete information regarding my phone calls with the Russian ambassador. I have sincerely apologized to the President and the Vice President, and they have accepted my apology," Flynn wrote, according to a copy of his resignation letter obtained by CNN.

"I am tendering my resignation, honored to have served our nation and the American people in such a distinguished way," he wrote. "I know with the strong leadership of President Donald J. Trump and Vice President Mike Pence and the superb team they are assembling, this team will go down in history as one of the greatest presidencies in US history."

The move comes less than a month into the job, making him one of the shortest-serving senior presidential advisers in modern history.

This changes NOTHING.

As was pointed out on a variety of cable news shows it is HIGHLY unlikely that Flynn reached out to Russia to discuss sanctions without the knowledge and direction of Donald Trump.

For one thing Flynn simply could NOT make any assurances unless he had Trump's blessing to make the calls.

By having Flynn take the bullet here the Trump administration is hoping that all of this Russian talk will blow over and that Trump can start receiving intelligence briefings again like nothing ever happened.

But fuck that.

Trump is the guy the Russians worked to get into the White House, not Mike Flynn, so clearly he is the one that they are counting on to do their bidding.

The media needs to keep the heat on and the Democrats need to continue to push for those investigations into Trump's ties with Putin and to get his tax returns released.

Mike Flynn is a good start, but our country will not truly be safe until the entire Trump administration is fired, impeached, or thrown in jail.

Update: By the way the man who feels that continuing to go after Hillary Clinton is still reasonable, sees no reason to investigate Flynn.
I think Chaffetz needs a few more rousing choruses of "Do your job!"

Useless POS!

Agreed. And if Gen. Petraeus is seriously under discussion as a replacement, even the stated reason for resignation isn't credible. He was forced to resign when his affair with his journalist/mistress was thought to leave him vulnerable to accusations of leaking classified information and/or subject to blackmail.

Flynn has the unique distinction of being canned by both the Obama and Trump Administrations.

He's a paranoid conspiracy theorist who has no problem turning his back on his country in return for $, he'll turn state's on Trump in a second if he's looking at even a day behind bars. Too bad The Logan Act is not really something that ever gets prosecuted. Hopefully the transcripts of the conversations have enough to keep this ball rolling.

Democrats demand independent Russia probe after Flynn quits

By RICHARD LARDNER - The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) Democrats demanded a special investigation Tuesday into possible links between President Donald Trump's administration and Russia, including when Trump learned that his national security adviser, Michael Flynn, had discussed U.S. sanctions with a Russian diplomat.

"The American people deserve to know the full extent of Russia's financial, personal and political grip on President Trump and what that means for our national security," House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said in a statement.

Flynn's resignation late Monday prompted Democrats to press for no-holds-barred investigations of Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election and Moscow's possible connections to the White House.

Republican leaders have refused so far to establish a special bipartisan committee to examine Moscow's meddling, arguing that the existing congressional committees are capable of handling the inquiries. But they'll be under pressure to reverse course after Flynn stepped down following reports he misled Vice President Mike Pence about contacts with a Russian diplomat.

.. California Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, says he wants to know whether Flynn was acting on Trump's behalf or whether Trump or anyone in his administration approved his contacts with Russia. He said Flynn's resignation "does not end questions over his contacts with the Russians."..

"It's time for a select bipartisan committee on the involvement of Russia in this administration and election," Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., wrote on her Twitter account Tuesday. "Period. Stop. Public hearings."

Rep. Eliot Engel of New York, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said a rigorous bipartisan investigation is needed because there are "far too many questions unanswered about this administration's ties to Russia."

--POTUS hates his strings being pulled. But right now he seems to feel more like Pinocchio than a real President.

--Only one thing changed over the course of Monday: publicity. Flynn wasn't fired, Pence forced him to resign.

--POTUS once again feeling like he's being sabotaged from within. He's not wrong, but his his reasoning is completely off the mark.

--The Yates news was the straw that broke Flynn, and also used to force POTUS to accept resg. Now POTUS angrier than ever about leaks.

--Ryan's statement false. POTUS was bypassed. Pence made resignation happen.

--The good news for POTUS is that accepting Flynn's sudden resg gave him leverage to negotiate the return of his phone. Such a deal maker.

--Pence and Preibus have scored a victory. But will it be enough to save Preibus? The W may be short lived.

GOP Oversight Chair Says His Committee Won't Investigate Flynn

House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) said on Tuesday that his panel will not investigate the circumstances that led to former national security adviser Michael Flynn's resignation.

"I think that situation has taken care of itself," Chaffetz told reporters, as quoted by The Hill. "I think he did the right thing stepping down."

Chaffetz's office did not respond to multiple requests for comment by TPM.

Chaffetz said that the House Intelligence Committee is investigating Russian hacks related to the 2016 election and that the circumstances of Flynn's resignation do not fall under the "purview" of his committee.

"It’s not something the Oversight Committee can actually look at because sources and methods are the exclusive purview of the Intel Committee," he said.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-CA) said earlier Tuesday that he does not plan to investigate Flynn's conversations with Trump about his calls with Russia's ambassador to the United States.

Kellyanne Conway Crumbles Under The Weight Of Her Own Lies

She struggled to answer basic questions about the timeline leading to the resignation of national security adviser Mike Flynn.

...But on Tuesday, Conway, who had claimed just hours before his resignation that the White House had “full confidence” in Flynn, repeatedly could not say why the administration waited to act.

On NBC’s “Today” show, the White House counselor claimed that “the situation had become unsustainable” after Flynn misled Pence.

“But the fact is, General Flynn continued in that position and was in the presidential daily briefings, as part of the leader calls, as recently as yesterday,” Conway said.

    Host Matt Lauer was incredulous.

“Kellyanne, that makes no sense,” he said. “Last month, the Justice Department warned the White House that General Flynn had misled them and that, as a result, he was vulnerable to blackmail and at that moment he still had the complete trust of the president?”

Lauer continued to press Conway, who would only say that “it was misleading the vice president that made the situation unsustainable” and that Trump “accepted the resignation, and he is moving on.”

On ABC’s “Good Morning America,” Conway similarly had no answers on the timeline of events and instead tried to push back on The Washington Post’s report.

“These are what are in printed reports, but the fact is that I can’t reveal what the White House knew or didn’t know and who in the White House knew or didn’t know,” she said.

The Russian Embassy sent out a cryptic message on Twitter on Monday that appeared to be in defense of Michael Flynn, the national security adviser to President Donald Trump who quit that evening.

Flynn has been facing accusations he discussed lifting U.S. sanctions against Russia in a phone call with the ambassador before Trump’s inauguration.

Kellyanne Conway’s Lies Drive Lauer to Suspect that Team Trump Was Behind Russian Calls

Conway's insistence on lying finally drove Lauer to drop a bombshell question, the question that could bring the entire Trump administration down. Lauer said Conway was making him think Flynn wasn't freelancing, and had made the Russia calls on behalf of the administration.

Democrats Must Go on the Offensive and Topple Trump’s Rotten, Treasonous Regime

Michael Flynn led the chants of "Lock her up!" Well, we know who should be locked up, and Flynn is only the first. He should be far from the last.

Key Republicans who held dozens of Benghazi hearings now eager to sweep Flynn scandal under the rug

...Similarly, Rep. Devin Nunes (R – CA), who serves as chairman of the United States House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, told CNN’s Manu Raju on Tuesday that he doesn’t plan on probing the Flynn scandal because he believes the president could use executive privilege to block Congress from looking into it.

Rep Blunt now wants investigations. Hopefully that will snowball. For all we know they are compromising Chaffetz as well.

On TV there was a mention of back when Hillary called Trump a Putin puppet during the debates. It was just one of a number of reminders of how people were wondering what Trump's connections to Putin were. But he went ahead and did whatever he wanted even though he knew eyes were on him. He thought he could just keep doing whatever the hell he wanted. Unless, that is, Putin had something on Trump and he had no choice.

Intel Committee Vice Chair Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) said in a statement today that the need for an investigation is more urgent than ever:

...Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) released the following statement today regarding the resignation of Michael Flynn as National Security Advisor:

“Michael Flynn’s resignation is only a chapter in this story, not the end. His ties with Russia remain an ongoing concern. He cannot be a sacrificial lamb for an administration that has already displayed a troubling closeness with the Kremlin. We must continue the investigation into Flynn’s communications with the Russian ambassador. The safety and security of Americans depends on it.”

Warner and Thompson are not alone. Democratic Sen. John Tester has said that Flynn’s resignation “may be the tip of the iceberg.” If so, this is certainly something we must know and it isn’t as though Trump is going to volunteer the information after weeks of pretending Flynn was innocent, even after being informed otherwise by acting Attorney General Sally Yates.

You know, before Trump accused her of betrayal.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) called for an investigation to determine who else on Trump’s team might have had contact with Vladimir Putin and Reps. John Conyers Jr. (D-MI) and Elijah Cummings (D-MD) want a classified briefing on Flynn. In a joint statement, the two Democrats said,

“Now, we in Congress need to know who authorized his actions, permitted them, and continued to let him have access to our most sensitive national security information despite knowing these risks. We need to know who else within the White House is a current and ongoing risk to our national security.”

Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) also called for an investigation, tweeting,

  41. So, Petraeus will replace Flynn.

    Higbie will replace Spicer.

    Who's next?

Kellyannus Conjob? If she isn't fired and doesn't resign, she may just be taken away in a white coat for observation and a quiet "rest."

Melanoma may be smarter than we give her credit for, staying the hell away from this disaster.

Higbie has a checkered past. He's a quitter too. College dropout. Screwed up a promising Navy career. Got RIF'd, and his discharge was downgraded from honorable to general. Even dumber than Spicer.

In my mind, Chaffetz' refusal to investigate Flynn proves his guilt and the GOP collusion in Russia's meddling with our election and with our security services. I plan to write to my two Democratic senators and ask that they continue to press for investigation of the very real Russian threat to our security. I'll also write to my Congressman. After all he's some kind of retired general from the Marine Corps. He should care about national security but I bet he doesn't. He's all about ending bureaucracy. . . .

  43. Why isn't Sarah lobbying for the job of press secretary, with her megaphone and all? Or better yet, her MOH son-in-law. Did Bristol marry him for nothing? He needs to pull his weight, bring in some bucks. He's already wimped out of the Iron Dog.

Please not Carl Higbie. Higbie is a grunt so dumb he makes Dakota sound like Socrates. On the other hand, Higbie would fit right in with Trump's negligent dismissal of the Constitution, Obama-envy, and contempt for everyone non-Christian, non-white, and non-male, especially Muslims--whom Higbie describes in abhorrent terms.

Spicer was given a thankless and impossible job. He's a smart man, with an impeccable advanced degree, but no one can defend the Trump administration. It's to Spicer's credit that he has outlasted Flynn. So will Spicer flame out next, or Kellyanne? What would be required for Trump himself to throw in the towel?

Should we mourn or celebrate each Trump failure? What comes next?
