The biggest election-related scandal since Watergate occurred last year, and it has largely disappeared from the political-media landscape of Washington.
According to the consensus assessment of US intelligence agencies, Russian intelligence, under the orders of Vladimir Putin, mounted an extensive operation to influence the 2016 campaign to benefit Donald Trump. This was a widespread covert campaign that included hacking Democratic targets and publishing swiped emails via WikiLeaks. And it achieved its objectives. But the nation's capital remains under-outraged by this subversion. The congressional intelligence committees announced last month that they will investigate the Russian hacking and also examine whether there were any improper contacts between the Trump camp and Russia during the campaign. (A series of memos attributed to a former British counterintelligence officer included allegations of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.) Yet these behind-closed-doors inquiries have generated minimum media notice, and, overall, there has not been much outcry.
Certainly, every once in a while, a Democratic legislator or one of the few Republican officials who have bothered to express any disgust at the Moscow meddling (namely Sens. John McCain, Lindsey Graham, and Marco Rubio) will pipe up. House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi days ago called on the FBI to investigate Trump's "financial, personal and political connections to Russia" to determine "the relationship between Putin, whom he admires, and Donald Trump." Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), responding to Trump's comparison of the United States to Putin's repressive regime, said on CNN, "What is this strange relationship between Putin and Trump? And is there something that the Russians have on him that is causing him to say these really bizarre things on an almost daily basis?" A few weeks ago, Graham told me he wanted an investigation of how the FBI has handled intelligence it supposedly has gathered on ties between Trump insiders and Russia. And last month, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) pushed FBI Director James Comey at a public hearing to release this information. Yet there has been no drumbeat of sound bites, tweets, or headlines. In recent days, the story has gone mostly dark.
I would disagree with David Corn that this is the biggest election scandal since Watergate.
I think this is MUCH bigger than Watergate.
And because of that fact he is exactly right that it is not receiving anywhere near the amount of coverage that it deserves.
Remember that for awhile we all suffered through almost 24 hour coverage of Benghazi, which pales in comparison to this story by every metric imaginable.
Here is Fox News coverage alone. |
• Trump’s campaign manager worked directly for Russia to subvert the government of the Ukraine, and was paid millions of dollars to generate “spontaneous demonstrations” in which US Marines were attacked in order to give Putin an excuse to seize Crimea.
• The Russian assistant ambassador is on record saying that, despite numerous denials, Russia was in contact with the Trump campaign on a regular basis.
• The only item where the Trump campaign forced a change in the Republican platform—the only item—was in modifying a plank to weaken the party’s stance on opposing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. And Trump representatives said that concern came from Trump personally.
And yes, out there is a supposed folio of kompromat containing items that Russia feels it can use to put pressure on Trump and his team. But even if every disgusting item in that secret file is just a fantasy, how is it possible that this story has completely disappeared?
And just yesterday we learned this about Trump's new National Security Adviser:
A U.S. intelligence official briefed on the matter confirmed to NBC News that National Security Advisor Mike Flynn discussed sanctions with the Russian ambassador before Flynn took office, contrary to denials from Vice President Mike Pence, White House spokesman Sean Spicer and others.
So yes, this story needs to be the top story leading EVERY broadcast until we all get the answers that we deserve to know about our new president and his ties to that cold blooded murderer in Russia.

It is appalling to me that we've now totally forgotten Trump's love affair with Putin. THE STORY that should be investigated in Congress is the relationship between Trump, his advisors and sycophants and Putin's Russia.
ReplyDeleteSo Trump keeps whining about his not winning the popular vote - lots of coverage - and GOP members of Congress keep whining about town hall meetings where people ask legitimate questions and want legitimate answers - lots of coverage, with the focus on the poor GOP members of Congress.

DeleteMJ"UPDATE: On Friday morning, the Trump administration confirmed that Flynn did speak to the Russian ambassador about the sanctions. And Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the senior Democrat on the House intelligence committee, called for Flynn's dismissal with this statement: "The allegation that General Flynn, while President Obama was still in office, secretly discussed with Russia’s ambassador ways to undermine the sanctions levied against Russia for its interference in the Presidential election on Donald Trump's behalf, raises serious questions of legality and fitness for office. If he did so, and then he and other Administration officials misled the American people, his conduct would be all the more pernicious, and he should no longer serve in this Administration or any other."

ReplyDeleteRussia Considers Returning Snowden to U.S. to ‘Curry Favor’ With Trump: Official
U.S. intelligence has collected information that Russia is considering turning over Edward Snowden as a "gift" to President Donald Trump — who has called the NSA leaker a "spy" and a "traitor" who deserves to be executed.
That's according to a senior U.S. official who has analyzed a series of highly sensitive intelligence reports detailing Russian deliberations and who says a Snowden handover is one of various ploys to "curry favor" with Trump. A second source in the intelligence community confirms the intelligence about the Russian conversations and notes it has been gathered since the inauguration....

That's so nice of that killer. Will he return all the countries he forcibly took?
Delete""I think he's a total traitor and I would deal with him harshly," Trump said in July. "And if I were president, Putin would give him over." In October 2013, Trump tweeted: "Snowden is a spy who should be executed." WILL drumpf DO IT ON 5TH AVE?
DeleteCIA Director Mike Pompeo has also called for Snowden to face American justice. "I think the proper outcome would be that he would be given a death sentence," Pompeo said last February""Is this going to happen? I don't know. Could it happen? Sure. Am I worried about it? Not really, because here's the thing: I am very comfortable with the decisions that I've made. I know I did the right thing."
There's the rub: Putin doesn't need to curry favor with Trump while Trump's head is so far up Putin's ass. Not gonna happen.
DeleteThis sounds like the “deal” Regan made with Iran to hold the hostages until after the election to make him look good.
DeleteTrump and Putin probable made this deal before the election to make trump look like he is being tough on putin. Putin turns Snowden over, then trump owes putin something.

3 Winter White House, Mar-a-Lago Florida (plus armed Coast Guard)
This is everyday 3 locations - 24 hours/7 days a week/365 Days

ReplyDeleteSeveral members of Congress said they will investigate, I believe them.
We don't know what is going on behind closed doors and maybe that is for the best right now. It can take months to collect and review all the information. The last thing we need is to have some last minute thrown together investigation and look like a bunch of idiots like the republicans.
Don't show donnie your cards until your ducks are all in a row.
I believe the reason this is not given the attention it deserves is because the news media CEO's and other top management are really afraid of the Donald. The anchors and the guests are also afraid of not getting access to executive branch & top republicans. If only they actually ask questions that matter. Most of the talking heads do not want ask probing questions and follow up on alternative facts that most of the Trump minions spout when ever they are on camera. They certainly do not want to talk to progressive Democrats or just democrats in general. Most of the Dems that appear are the wall Street lovin variety which are past their sell by date. Donald Trump is scapegoating lunatic Michael Flynn over Russia – how will Flynn retaliate?
ReplyDeleteMichael Flynn, an erratic disgraced former military leader with a history of illegal behavior, is precisely the kind of shady guy you use if you’re Donald Trump and you need a underhanded go-between with Russia. But then you’ve got to reward the guy, which is why the unstable Flynn is currently Trump’s National Security Advisor. But what happens when the eternally enraged Flynn sloppily gets caught on Russia, as he did today, and Trump tries to scapegoat him? We’re now finding out.
Flynn, by any measure, appears to be a complete lunatic. He was the guy who was screaming crazy lies about Hillary Clinton in such a ragingly unhinged manner at the Republican National Convention that one half expected him to keel over in the middle of his speech. Flynn has also willfully and illegally leaked classified information on multiple occasions, including one instance where his boss wouldn’t sign off on his plan to leak classified into to Pakistan, and he did it anyway.
According to insider reports, Donald Trump has already had enough of Michael Flynn’s endless rambling during high level meetings, and Flynn has been rapidly becoming irrelevant despite his fairly high level title of National Security Advisor. But Trump probably would never would have fired him, just to make sure the erratic Flynn didn’t leak the Russia secrets in retaliation. Except now it turns out the intel community has caught Flynn for having illegally discussed sanctions with the Russian ambassador before Trump took office, which means he has to be scapegoated. And that’s already underway.
The blame game has already begun within the Trump administration.

Mike Pence throws National Security Advisor Michael Flynn under the Trump-Russia bus
ReplyDeleteNow that the U.S. intelligence community has confirmed today that National Security Advisor Michael Flynn did indeed discuss U.S. sanctions with the Russian government in December, in violation of the law, the exploding scandal has quickly spread to vice president Mike Pence. When Flynn previously claimed that sanctions were not discussed during the phone calls, Pence publicly confirmed as much. But now Pence is throwing Flynn under the bus to try to protect himself, in a sign of how swiftly Trump-Russia is unraveling.
Mike Pence had previously confirmed publicly that Michael Flynn had not discussed sanctions during the numerous phone calls he made to the Russian ambassador, on the day the sanctions were announced by President Barack Obama. But now that the intel community is confirming Flynn did discuss sanctions, Pence is hanging him out to dry. Pence’s office is now leaking to CNN that Pence had merely been taking Flynn’s word for it when he vouched for him, and that Pence doesn’t definitively know what Flynn said to the Russians. This is rather clearly an attempt on Pence’s part to insulate himself from the scandal. The question now is what Flynn, who has often come off as being unstable, will do in response — and it may not be pretty.
The last time Michael Flynn got ticked off at his boss, he retaliated by going against orders and leaking classified information to Pakistan. Now that Mike Pence appears to be trying to set up Flynn as the fall guy for Trump-Russia, the erratic and often angry Flynn could rat out Pence (and Trump) in retaliation – or simply to protect himself legally, now that he’s been exposed as having violated federal law on Trump’s behalf.

U.S. intel confirms key details of Donald Trump – Russia golden showers blackmail report
ReplyDeleteOne month after a now infamous British intel dossier first became public which claimed that Donald Trump was being blackmailed by the Russian government over his bedroom habits, the United States intelligence community is now confirming key details of the thirty-five page report — helping to establish the credibility of the stunning and sensational claims that the report made.
CNN first announced the news today, reporting that U.S. intelligence investigators have confirmed the details of a number of the conversations documented in the dossier, including when those conversations took place and who the participants were. This is not a confirmation of most infamous details in the report, such as the claim that Donald Trump participated in lewd acts with Russian prostitutes in a Moscow hotel, or that Vladimir Putin and the Russian government are using a “pee pee tape” video of the incident to blackmail Trump. However, the details now being confirmed do lend significant credibility to the veracity of the report overall, increasing the likelihood that the golden showers and blackmail incidents are also true.

Melania Trump absent from Abe Shinzo visit to DC after White House said she’d be there
ReplyDeleteWhere in the world is Melania Trump? Last night the White House announced that Melania would be in Washington DC today with her husband Donald Trump to greet Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo. But it turns out Melania was not there today, and that Shinzo’s wife was left to her own sightseeing devices while Donald and Abe met privately. It points to a deepening problem in which the “First Lady” of the United States can’t be counted to show up at the White House and represent her country when necessary. So what happened today?
It’s already known that Melania Trump and her son Barron are living full time at Trump Tower in New York, while Donald Trump lives on his own at the White House in Washington DC, and only sees his family on vacation weekends. This arrangement means that there has been no one to run the East Wing of the White House, which handles the more procedural and ceremonial aspects of the presidency. Some had expected Ivanka Trump to step into the role, but that hasn’t happened either. And today the lack of a First Lady became an embarrassing problem, both for Donald Trump and for the United States.
...Did Melania Trump tell Donald and the White House that she would come to Washington DC for Prime Minister Abe’s visit, and then fail to show? Did the White House merely assume Melania would have the sense to be in town for this kind of major ceremonial event?

ReplyDeleteReeling Trump Devastated As Info Showing He Was Compromised By Putin Gains Steam
It's been reported Friday evening that the intel compiled by the former British spy has gained credibility among law enforcement.
The dossier that wouldn’t go away. Some got distracted by the urine aspects, but the real issue is whether or not Donald Trump has been compromised by Russia. It’s been reported Friday evening that the intel compiled by the former British spy has gained credibility among law enforcement.
In January, reports said the intel community was investigating claims that Russia had compromised Trump, and had damaging personal and financial information on then President-elect. Those reports haven’t gone away, and unlike accusations that they were false, they are gaining credibility among the law enforcement according to CBS and CNN.
CNN reported Friday evening, “For the first time, US investigators say they have corroborated some of the communications detailed in a 35-page dossier compiled by a former British intelligence agent, multiple current and former US law enforcement and intelligence officials tell CNN.”
The salacious aspects of the dossier haven’t been corroborated, but other aspects of the dossier have been corroborated. “The corroboration, based on intercepted communications, has given US intelligence and law enforcement ‘greater confidence’ in the credibility of some aspects of the dossier as they continue to actively investigate its contents, these sources say.”
In response, the Trump White House accused CNN of being “fake news.”
However, CBS News’s sources concurred with CNN’s report:

Democratic Senator Busts Trump Making America Less Safe By Recklessly Handling Intel
The sharp eyes of Democratic Sen. Martin Heinrich caught President Donald Trump jeopardizing national security by recklessly handling classified information.
Trump left the key in the lock bag in the same manner that someone might accidentally leave their house keys in the front door while bringing in an armful of groceries. Donald Trump is so ignorant and reckless with classified info that he not only left the key in the bag, but he left the bag out in the open and exposed to non-classified individuals.
This is a breach of the most basic information handling protocol and displayed an absurd lack of common sense and recklessness from the President Of The United States. Keep these pictures in mind the next time that the President talks about how is keeping America safe.
Trump can’t even keep a classified file safe from potentially prying eyes, so the odds of him keeping an entire country safe aren’t very good.
Every single day, Donald Trump does something to prove that he is a danger to the security of the nation...

CIA gets Michael T. Flynn’s top deputy fired, amid exploding Donald Trump-Russia scandal
ReplyDeleteIf you were wondering how long it would take before the Russian pee pee would hit the fan after Donald Trump’s National Security Advisor Michael T. Flynn was caught colluding with the Russian government, you now have your answer: it’s already happening. In response to the exploding Trump-Russia scandal, the CIA has taken action this evening which directly resulted in Flynn’s top deputy being immediately forced out of a job.
The Central Intelligence Agency has now denied elite security clearance for Michael Flynn’s top National Security Council deputy Africa Robin Townley, meaning that Townley is immediately out of a job, as the clearance was required for the job. Incoming CIA Director Mike Pompeo, who was recently appointed by Donald Trump and is presumably still fully loyal to him, signed off on the denial of clearance. Assuming that Pompeo is acting on Trump’s orders, it means that Trump is now immediately freezing Michael Flynn and his staff out of power.
This stunning late night development comes shortly after Palmer Report concluded that the Trump administration was setting up Michael Flynn as a scapegoat on the Russia scandal, based on the moves today by Mike Pence to distance himself from his previous vouching for Flynn on Russia. It now raises the question of whether Flynn, who has been known to act erratically and rebelliously, could end up trying to take down Trump and Pence with him.
Flynn is now furious at the fact that the CIA has just purposely gotten his top deputy fired, according to Politico, which has broken the the CIA ousting of Townley. As of yet there’s no word on Flynn’s own security clearance being revoked, which would essentially cause him to be fired from his role as National Security Advisor. And again, we’re under the working assumption that Pompeo is acting on Trump’s orders. If the CIA Director has gone rogue against Trump, then that’ll be whole other scandal.

Donald Trump fired White House cybersecurity chief last week, hasn’t replaced him, and he’s vanished
ReplyDeleteMore details are emerging surrounding Donald Trump’s abrupt firing of White House chief information security officer Cory Louie, who was reportedly escorted out of the building after being terminated from his job. While confirmation of the firing is just coming out now, it actually took place a week ago – and it appears there is now no one in the crucial role. Even more strangely, Louie appears to have since simply vanished from the face of the earth.
Impeach Trump Now
The buildup goes like this: Cory Louie was hired by President Barack Obama in 2015 to be in charge of making sure that the top people in the White House are digitally secure so they don’t get hacked. Although the job was non-political in nature, something happened last week which caused Louie to be not only fired, but escorted out of his own office — a tactic which is most typically invoked when the fired employee is believed to be some kind of risk, or the employer wants to humiliate him.
Louie’s underlings are declining to serve up the details of what happened, but they are now leaking that the working environment under Trump is “toxic” and that they’re now afraid they’re the next to go. Even more strangely, no one appears to have taken Louie’s place. So it’s not as if Trump merely wanted to bring in his own guy. And now no one appears to be officially in charge of keeping the president and his computing devices from getting hacked.
Meanwhile, Cory Louie has apparently disappeared since he was fired.

DeleteThe Donald Trump regime, already thrown into total chaos by the judicial demise of its Muslim ban followed by revelations that Mike Pence and National Security Advisor Michael Flynn have been caught lying about Russian collusion, has taken another chaotic blow. The conservative bigot thought to be Trump’s leading candidate for Solicitor General has abruptly dropped out of consideration.
ReplyDeleteChuck Cooper, perhaps best known for arguing in court in favor of California’s ban on gay marriage, was thought to be Trump’s top pick for Solicitor General – which would have been a severe blow to civil rights around the nation. As if to underscore just how much of a bigot Cooper is, he sided with lifelong racist Jeff Sessions while explaining why he was dropping out. Describing the openly racist Sessions as a “decent and honorable man who bears only good will and good cheer,” Cooper stated that he was unwilling to put himself through the same kind of grueling approval process that and Sessions faced.
But it was always a given that Jeff Sessions would be forced to answer for his decades of racism during his confirmation hearings, and it shouldn’t have come as a surprise to Cooper. His given excuse, as supplied to Politico, could merely be an arbitrary one, as he sees Donald Trump’s mental state continue to publicly deteriorate, and as the Trump administration comes fully unglued. And Cooper is not the only one of Trump’s top candidates to drop out.
