Rachel Maddow's big Donald Trump tax reveal, what did we learn? Well not that much actually.

So here is a brief summary of what was broadcast from The Rachel Maddow show last night:
  • Trump paid 38 million dollars in taxes in 2005.
  • Took write down of 103 million.
  • Made more than 150 million.
  • MSNBC sent the form over to White House and they responded that yes it is real.
  • Rachel says it is not illegal to share based upon the first amendment.
  • Journalist who recovered it is David Cay Johnston, who says it turned up in his mailbox.
  • Johnston mentions Trump himself may have leaked it, however no hard evidence.
  • The pages leaked are incomplete and do not provide whole financial picture.
  • Trump paid effective tax rate of 24%, which is the same as married couples in America. Usually the top pay ~36% during that time and ~39% this year.
  • Incomplete returns do not reveal sources of income.
There was lots of talk about what this could mean, why Trump would not voluntarily release his taxes, and why it is important for the American people to see them, especially in light of the Russia controversy. However what you see above was really the only actual data that was presented.

Some on the internet compared this to Geraldo Rivera's "Al Capone's Vault" stunt, but it was not on that level despite that fact that it was a little over hyped.

It seems that currently most people are of the opinion that Trump himself leaked this since the form that Johnston received is stamped "Client Copy."

That is certainly possible, even though the White House is acting like they are the injured party.
(Actually as Rachel noted this did NOT violate the law.)

It also should be noted that the White House took the highly unusual step of attempting to sabotage Rachel's exclusive by releasing the copy of the tax return themselves.

Which of course makes their charge of illegality even more ridiculous because how could the journalists be breaking the law by reporting on a document that they themselves just released?
All in all it was interesting, but certainly not groundbreaking.

However it IS more information that we have not had before, and as was mentioned on the show there are other copies of Trump's tax returns floating around out there, so if somebody wants to contribute to a REAL explosive story on this topic they certainly know what to do.

I have the feeling that this 2005 tax return may have been one of the few that showed Trump as a responsible tax paying citizen. I bet there are many others that would be devastating to his reputation as a billionaire and which might demonstrate some rather incriminating ties to unsavory business associates.

I watched this last night, and afterwards, watched Rachel's appearance on Lawrence O'Donnell's show -- along with David Cay Johnston, who'd also been on her show -- and the more I thought about it, the more certain I became that these tax records were sent to him by the Trump folks.

These docs mysteriously appearing in Mr Johnson's in box has all the earmarks of a set up. As in, "they want tax returns, let's send 'em a couple pages of the best one we've got, that shows them that DT is a responsible tax-paying businessman. And then let's let them embarrass themselves by making a big deal about it. Yay! Another way to make liberals look stupid."

The Trump gang knew exactly what they were doing when they sent this to Mr Johnson.

I agreed 100%! These are fake and Trump is the source of them. How do we know the returns are legitimate? I think they faked the return to one...dispell the previous return that showed a huge loss he could write off over 20 years, Two so he could prove he made millions, and Three, the biggest lie of all, that he paid millions in taxes.

OT? EVIL!"modern psychiatry, exacerbated by the profit motive of the medical industry, to confuse symptoms with illnesses and to offer criteria for diagnosis so broad that they would apply to most people. And, in fact, they do."
"Thus, these clinicians assert, Trump is mentally ill because he is delusional about reality, grandiose, impulsive, and believes himself to be the most powerful man in the world."
"We may not like his leadership style, but his personality seems mainly to have been an asset for him in the worlds of real estate and politics. And he seems constitutionally incapable of self-doubt or other kinds of personal distress, and perhaps even derives pleasure from his aggression and impulsivity." the ARTIST “allows his erotic and ambitious wishes full play in the life of fantasy. He finds the way back to reality, however, from this world of fantasy by making use of special gifts to mold his fantasies into truths of a new kind.” Trump has to be understood, then, as a reality ARTIST, one who is adept at the strategies that turn his biggest whoppers into reality. "technique: He simply shifts the evidence for what is real from facts to FEELings."Trump is a master at navigating the chaos he himself provokes."
"RADICAL EVIL is the manipulation of others’ perception of reality in order to increasingly concentrate power and wealth in the hands of the few. It is a strategy to sow chaos in order to take advantage of the fear that chaos brings. It is the twisting of facts to frighten citizens into believing that their safety requires them to turn against others. And it is the collapsing of what is good and moral into what is rich and powerful, and ruthlessly using that wealth and that power to accrue more wealth and power."

I think Trump is totally self-absorbed. He has "succeeded" because, as someone who does not care about other people at all, he has been able to become the consummate con artist. He conned the Republican Party and now he's in charge of the whole GOP con game that will destroy the entire country.

Five signs that Donald Trump leaked his own 2005 tax returns as a Trump-Russia diversion

This was all too strategic and misleading. Don’t fall for it.

Someone anonymously mailed the first two pages of Donald Trump’s 2005 tax returns to longtime Trump rival David Cay Johnston, who promptly handed them over to MSNBC host Rachel Maddow last night, and for a moment we thought we were off to the races. But by the end of the hour it was clear that this isolated bit of Trump’s tax returns contained little. In fact here are five concrete reasons to believe that Trump himself strategically leaked them last night as a diversion:

    1) These returns are from 2005, back when Donald Trump was still financially prospering. They show him with a decent income and nothing to suggest anything troublesome or embarrassing. General consensus is he likely went broke during the 2008 crash and was forced to begin borrowing Russian money laundered through Deutsche Bank shortly thereafter. How convenient, the,n that his one year of leaked returns happened to have been from before that. Also, any leaker who would have had access to the first two pages would have also had access to the entire return, and if someone leaked this to try to hurt him, the entire document would have been included. As it stands, the names of Trump’s businesses and business associates are conveniently removed.

    2) Trump never signed the leaked document in question. In the signature box it’s stamped “client copy.” So this leak didn’t come from anyone in the government. Even if Trump was forced to provide his 2005 tax return in a lawsuit, his attorney likely would have provided his own copy, not Trump’s unsigned client copy. The only people who could have realistically had access to the copy that leaked last night were Donald and Melania. And if Melania were somehow trying to harm him, this is not the year or the pages she would have leaked.

    3) Rachel Maddow reported on-air that when she provided the two leaked pages to the White House for comment before going on air, it swiftly confirmed the authenticity. This makes it extraordinarily difficult to believe that Trump and the White House didn’t already know what had been leaked. Trumps tax returns are such a sensitive subject for him that he was willing to risk losing the election just so he wouldn’t have to release the most embarrassing portions of them. Yet when this particular return leaked, the White House – despite lying constantly and ludicrously about anything it doesn’t want to acknowledge – immediately admitted to Maddow that it was real without needing time for digestion or internal debate.

    4) In fact the White House released a statement which, while clearly written by Donald Trump himself based on the signature hyperbolic verbiage, had everything spelled correctly. Trump is an extremely poor phonetic speller, as evidenced by his consistent mistakes on Twitter. So not only did Trump have time to write a statement full of carefully calculated faux-outrage at the media, his staff had time to fix his errors. And this all happened nearly instantly. Also, Trump released an official statement, which he never does, instead of letting loose on Twitter, which he always does when he’s angrily caught off guard.

Journalist Who Received Trump Tax Return Questions If Trump Leaked It Himself

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Cay Johnston says he received two pages from the 2005 document in the mail from an unknown source.

...“It came in the mail over the transom,” Johnston told Maddow, following the host’s roughly 25-minute build-up before discussing the documents in detail. “There is absolutely nothing improper about journalists — if you haven’t solicited something — getting it over the transom. Let me point out, it’s entirely possible that Donald sent this to me. Donald Trump has, over the years, leaked all sorts of things.”

Trump’s Lawyer Threatens Joe Scarborough After MSNBC Host Says Trump Leaked His Own Tax Return

...If one buys what Scarborough is selling here, Trump cherry picked a tax return and leaked two pages to the press to distract from the fact that he is going to take health care away from many of the rural and red state voters who supported him. Also, Trump is looking for a distraction on the Russia scandal.

What Scarborough is suggesting makes sense because only the first two pages of the return were leaked, and it was from almost 12 years ago. The more damaging information, if any exists, is will be found in the President’s more recent returns. Who was the president in business with while he was a candidate? What potential conflicts of interest exist now that he in the White House?

These questions can’t be answered by a couple of pages from a 2005 tax return.

The Trump circle doesn’t understand how the First Amendment works. Joe Scarborough has a constitutionally protected right to express his opinion about the President Of The United States. Rachel Maddow has a constitutionally protected right to report on Donald Trump’s 2005 tax returns.

Threatening the press is a great tactic to motivate journalists to keep digging on a story. People who don’t have anything to hide don’t threaten reporters.

Joe Scarborough expressed an opinion, but in Trump’s America.

Drumpf's approval rating will never be zero. In fact, there's a good chance it's not unlikely to drop much below 40%.

Like the douchebag himself said, "I could shoot someone in the street and I wouldn't lose many voters'.

It's time we wake up to the possibility that his supporters will never coming around. For one thing, it take a certain humility to admit you were wrong about something and Drumpf constantly models the tactic of NEVER admitting he's wrong despite being frequently wrong. His supporters admire and will likely adopt that behavior.

Anyway, how much more douchebaggery do you - anyone - think he has to display before people who like him now turn against him?

Maybe it's just going to be this way for the foreseeable future. You either believe he's the worst president of the United States since the last Ice Age or you think he's actually going to Make America Great Again even if he has to destroy it first. Are there any other options?

The man behind Trump’s tax return

...Johnston has a long history reporting on Trump, first reporting on the businessman’s Atlantic City dealings in the 1980s while employed at the Philadelphia Inquirer. In August, Johnston released “The Making of Donald Trump,” an unofficial biography of President Trump that Johnston said was a culmination of his years of reporting. Johnston has also written for POLITICO Magazine on his years of reporting on Trump's questionable business ties.

Now, Johnston is focused on DCReport.org, which bills itself as “a new kind of news operation for the Trump era” that focuses on policy proposals and the consequences of government decisions. The web site, which runs on reader donations and for which Johnston does not yet receive a salary, crashed on Tuesday night due to the swell of internet traffic.

Donald Trump and Congress plan to eliminate many of the rights and protections of Americans. They intend to further subsidize a few thousand millionaires and billionaires while gutting the services and benefits of hundreds of millions of ordinary citizens.

David Cay Johnston wants to make sure you know what they’re doing to your government!

The Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist has a plan to arm you, the average American, with the information you need about what your government is up to, what your fellow citizens think and — most importantly — what you can do about it.

David literally wrote the book on the president elect, The Making of Donald Trump. His reporting persuaded two presidents to rethink their tax policies, stopped tax dodges that Congress valued at more than $250 million in the first decade alone and promoted the passage of many federal and state laws and regulations to protect people. The Washington Monthly calls him “one of America’s most important journalists.”

David is proposing a new kind of nonprofit, citizen-centered news organization, David Cay Johnston’s DCReport features journalism that meticulously scours the public record to report what’s really going on inside your congressional committee rooms, your executive branch departments, your regulatory agencies and, yes, your White House. This is citizen-focused journalism that will value policies over politics. The focus: The results of government actions, not the rhetoric of politicians.

David has written six books and reported for the New York Times, the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Los Angeles Times. His readers rely on him for fearless, plain-English journalism that engages citizens and stirs them to action. But this isn’t typical of the press — not even the most responsible and well-funded news organizations, and especially not the Internet’s click-bait news franchises.

The best mainstream news organizations don’t cover what’s happening within the government until it’s far too late for citizens to do anything about it. Mainstream news focuses on controversies, like the campaign coverage of Clinton’s emails or Trump’s boasts about sexual assault. It’s rare for the mainstream press to report on the day-to-day mechanics of government, where laws get made, regulations are forged and backroom deals are struck. But this is where government actually happens.

DCReport will alert you each day of new proposed changes. These concise alerts will be followed by easily understood articles and infographics fleshing out the facts to explain how proposed new policies will affect your freedom, your life and your wallet. DCReport will also reveal who’s behind the proposed changes, who will benefit and who will be hurt.

Most importantly, DCReport will show you how you can exercise your constitutional rights to get involved in what, at least for now, is a process in which citizens are entitled to intervene and protest. DCReport won’t tell you what to do or what stand to take on an issue, but it will apprise you of what is coming, how to get involved and how to connect with others who share your concerns.

Trump’s Border Wall Sh*t Just Got Real – Texans Receive Notices To Sell Or Have Their Land Taken

...The government offered $2,900 for 1.2 acres near the Rio Grande. If Flores chooses not to accept the offer, the land could be seized through eminent domain.

The week before Donald Trump’s inauguration, Yvette Salinas received a letter she had been dreading for years: legal notice that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) wants to build a border wall on her family’s land near Los Ebanos. The 21-page document, entitled a “Declaration of Taking,” is addressed to her ailing mother, Maria Flores, who owns the property with her siblings. The letter offers Flores $2,900 for 1.2 acres near the Rio Grande. If she chooses not to accept the offer, the land could be seized through eminent domain. “It’s scary when you read it,” Salinas says. “You feel like you have to sign.”

I find it odd that no one is commenting on the poor return on investment he earned that year. Sure, $150 million is a lot of money but Trump claims to be worth $10 billion. He also claims that he is earning from all his assets including on his home,Trump Tower and his second home, the private club Mar-a-Lago. So, if the 150 million was earned off his claimed 10 billion in assets then he earned only a simple 1.5%. Money markets were paying more than that! So how much has little donnie run up the deficit between security and investigations into his paranoid theories?
    ==================================

BREAKING: House Intelligence Says 'No Evidence' On Trump Wiretap Claims
Congressmen Devin Nunes (R) and Adam Schiff (D) held a press conference today to announce that there is "no evidence" that Trump's 'wiretapping' claims against Barack Obama are true.

You're going to hear those words again and again: "no evidence." It's a polite (and why are we being polite?) way to say Trump's either lying or crazy.

Democrat Adam Schiff, the minority leader on the Intelligence Committee, was just adorable as he expects accountability from the Trump White House:

SCHIFF: I do think it's incumbent if we get to March 20th and have the testimony, we all expect from the director that there was no substance to the accusation that Barack Obama illegally wiretapped Trump Tower. That the president explain himself. I think this -- you can't level an accusation of that type without either retracting it or explaining just why it was done. And I think there are, from a national security perspective, great concerns if the president is willing to state things like that without any basis because the country needs to be able to rely on him, particularly if we have a crisis that is an external crisis as every president does within their term of office. So I think it is a serious matter. And I appreciate the chairman's willingness to have an open hearing on this. and I think the testimony will be very important.

Let's remember the facts as we know them: our so-called president woke up Saturday morning March 4, and, unsupervised by his daughter and her husband, read a Breitbart report about a Marc Levin radio program pushing the conspiracy theory that Barack Obama had wiretapped Trump Tower. The so-called President then broadcast via Twitter some truly insane charges about his predecessor. That is what happened.

They need to 25th Amendment this guy because crazy, lying, or both. There IS now evidence of that. And that is what no one on TV will say.

In the meantime, because the Republican Party insists that no, Trump really is the president, the REAL deep state, people like United States Congressmen and FBI officials, have been under pressure to "prove" that what the so-called president tweeted was either true or untrue.

Don't forget that primary source Marc Levin has taken himself out of the equation by claiming he is "not Nostradamus." Really.

And apparently no one in Washington including all media is willing to bare their chest to Steve Bannon's dagger by even mentioning Breitbart. Breitbart.com, who runs the Republican Party. And therefore the government of the United States of America.

PS. Our tax dollars are paying for all of this "investigation" by the way. Has Trump left for his regular Mar-a-Lago weekend yet?

  22. How does one stay a "billionare" and make only $150 million dollars in a year? And 2005 was a pretty good year, especially in real estate. That was before the crash.

How much does Warren Buffet make in a year?

I think Trump is a lying piece of shit. And 24% tax bracket? Really? He only released those two pages because any more and his tax cheating wouldn't hold up under scrutiny. 2005? That's because that far back the IRS can't touch him.

    Lying, cheating cocksucker.

The 1040 is clearly stamped "Client Copy", which means that Trump himself, or someone close to him deliberately leaked this to the media, almost definitely as a distraction from the investigation into his Russian connections - and let's not forget that Rachel spent the first half of her program talking about those, before moving on to the tax form.

I think it's his attempt at discrediting her because she's been soooo successful in the past couple of months by reporting on what he does vs what he says and he's scared of that.

She's such a poli-sci geek--I just love her rolling around in some obscure stuff and digging out the important stuff so we can all see why things are happening the way they are.

    Go, RM, Go!!!

I've never seen watched her show but I did meet her when she was here in AK back in 2009 (or 2010 or 2011, can't really remember but it was back during the Palin stuff) She seemed pleasant enough and smart but we have an aversion to any cable news in our home.

The released tax return, the wire tapping claim, golfing regularly, etc. are all distractions. Kellyanne Conway goes on TV to create doubt and confuse by not talking about the issues at hand.

People should remained focused on Russia's involvement in the election process (who, how and why).

Hey DOnnie "Little Hands", just because YOU are ignorant of a prize- winning journalist doesn't mean no one else has heard of him - like those folks who give out Pulitzers: David Cay Boyle Johnston is an American investigative journalist and author, a specialist in economics and tax issues, and winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Beat Reporting
