"We just pulled it," he tells me.
House Republican leaders abruptly pulled a Republican rewrite of the nation’s health-care system from consideration on Friday, a dramatic acknowledgment that they are so far unable to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
“We just pulled it,” President Trump told the Washington Post in a telephone interview.
The decision came a day after President Trump delivered an ultimatum to lawmakers – and the defeat represented multiple failures for the new president and House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.). The decision means the Affordable Care Act remains in place, at least for now, and a major GOP campaign promise goes unfulfilled.
The decision also casts doubt on the GOP’s ability to govern and to advance other high-stakes agenda items, including tax reform and infrastructure spending. Ryan is still without a signature achievement as speaker – and the defeat undermines Trump’s image as a skilled dealmaker willing to strike compromises to push his agenda forward.
Trump has previously said that if this fails he wants to move on, so there is little chance the Republicans will attempt this again.
And let's face it they really don't want to anyway.
The response on Twitter was epic!
Holy smokes. This also entirely destroys the president's bluff for the next round of negotiations. He just straight up folded.— Christopher Hayes (@chrislhayes) March 24, 2017
Substance matters. The reason Ryan, Trump, etc, could ever make a persuasive argument for this bill is there wasn't one to make.— Ezra Klein (@ezraklein) March 24, 2017

Trump will want to pass the blame, as if #Trumpcare wasn't his even though he campaigned for it. Ryan will be the scapegoat. Popcorn please.— George Takei (@GeorgeTakei) March 24, 2017

Not dead.
ReplyDeleteOnly dormant.
They can bring it back for a vote any time.
Probably when no one is paying attention.
Obviously you weren’t listening.
DeleteLittle donnie has moved on. He is going to let Obamacare “implode”, now he is going to work on screwing the Americans with his budget.
Whatever Humpty Trumpty says is a lie, 1:33.
DeleteMlaiuppa is right. They can and they probably will try it when no one is watching. Doesn't mean the nay-sayers in the own party will be gone, though.
Why should anyone listen to "Little donnie." All he does is lie, name call, and brag. He is a problem child. Mlaiuppa's take on it is very plausible.
DeleteNope, like everything else they have "promised" to do they are going to quietly forget about healthcare, just like they have "forgotten" about all those illegal voters"
DeleteIt's dead. People will always pay attention to healthcare, and there's no reason to think the GOP could magically summon up enough votes with Congress members willing to lose their seats. Trumpcare is not dormant and it is not a zombie. It's dead.
DeleteThey'll quietly tweak it behind the scenes until they've got enough votes on board. Then it will suddenly come before a vote and pass.
DeleteThis is how they do things.
But first they'll kill it by starving it to death. They control the budget, so they'll withhold money. This is now they killed public education. They cut funding and added unfunded mandates until schools simply couldn't maintain the quality education they had always provided. Then the set up unreasonable goals and pointed and said "See? Failing!"
They'll do the same to Obamacare. They already choked the funding that would allow the insurance companies to operate in some of the smaller markets. They'll keep doing that until it can't function or enough people complain.
The only way to really save it is to make sure the Democrats have a majority in 2018 and 2020.
BUT if congress uses their CRA they could permanently cripple the ACA.
"They" can vote all they want in prison.

Republicans lied about healthcare for years, and they're about to get the punishment they deserve
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to decide which would be the more politically damaging outcome for Republican politicians: passing the American Health Care Act, and therefore owning the premium increases and coverage losses it would cause; or not passing the bill, and therefore failing to do anything that can be framed as "repealing Obamacare."
Each option is a political nightmare for Republicans for the same reason: Each would amount to an admission that Republicans cannot deliver what they have promised for years on healthcare.
For years, Republicans promised lower premiums, lower deductibles, lower co-payments, lower taxes, lower government expenditure, more choice, the restoration of the $700 billion that President Barack Obama heartlessly cut out of Medicare because he hated old people, and (in the particular case of the Republican who recently became president) "insurance for everybody" that is "much less expensive and much better" than what they have today.
They were lying. Over and over and over and over, Republicans lied to the American public about healthcare.
It was impossible to do all of the things they were promising together, and they knew it.
Then they unexpectedly won an election and had to face the question of whether they would break all of their promises — or only some of them.
And if they don't pass the AHCA, well, then they'll have broken all of the promises.
Either way, Republicans will have to face an angry electorate in 2018 and 2020 that did not get what it was promised. The exposure of Republican healthcare lies will do grave damage to the party, and that damage will be richly deserved.

Little donnie is blaming the Democrats because they wouldn’t vote for this bill. And kept yakking it was very close, like 10-20 votes. That is not very close at all.
ReplyDeleteTo listening to his “speech” he made it sound like it was a crappy bill anyway and Americans weren’t going to “love it” until they got to phase 2 and phase 3 so now we can all move on and work on a bill in the future that everyone will love.
What a moron. What I want to know is what are the planning to “make” Obamacare implode, it won’t be the market it is going to be something they can sabotage in the bill.
ABC took a poll today and 59% of Americans want to keep Obamacare.
I think ater a few years the ACA costs go solely to the states or something, andsdtates can't afford that...unless they, for instance, stop the gazzillions of dollars skimmed from bridge crossing money or something.
DeleteLike any Democrat in their right mind would vote for anything that he throws up? Hello Donald...
DeleteYes. Democrats do own Obamacare. Proud of it.
DeleteIt works and they'll be reminding people of that fact every day until the 2018 elections.
They'll also be reminding people who tried to take their healthcare away from them. That would be Trump, Ryan, McConnell and the GOP.

Republicans Are Playing A Losing Hand In The Health Care Debate
ReplyDeleteHouse Republicans pulled their Ryancare proposal today, but this story is not over. They promise to try again to repeal and replace Obamacare in the coming months and years, but it will be no easier next time.
They are playing a losing hand. And playing it poorly.

Notice how trump has already changed his tune, oh I really didn’t like this bill much, we can do better. Next time we will come up with a really great bill. How by actually putting something about healthcare in it? Or more tax cuts for the rich.
ReplyDeleteSo why was he pushing it, if he didn’t like it. A few hours ago, he was saying it was a great bill. What a liar.
He even had the audacity to say he NEVER said he wanted to repeal Obamacare !!!!!! I can’t wait to see what the responses on twitter are about that.
You start to wonder if he needs to take remedial reading lessons every time he reads a 'speech' off of the teleprompter.... there's no evidence that he's even capable of reading legislation much less understanding it.
DeleteAnon at 3:07 pm. There are simply too many words in a piece of legislation, even one that is laden with references to all that was going to be changed in the ACA. RESIST Trump and ALL Republicans - on the national, state and local levels.
There are 2 things I think they are smart NOT to have brought up - and I wish the Democrats had.
DeleteFirst, if my memory serves me correctly, wasn't it a Repube Think Tank that developed the main body of the ACA?
And, second, If it's so bad, why hasn't the state Of Massachusetts been heard screaming? I mean it was a repube who was governor when it was instituted, right?
I live in Massachusetts. My son is on Romneycare. It's not perfect, but it works. Thanks, Mitt.
DeleteAnd this will haunt them into the next generation. Had a blast today , after listening to my teen's friends say what did it matter to them. They were on mom's and dad's insurance. Proceeded to point out that a) they could stay on that insurance until 26 thanks to the ACA (Obamacare) and that their girlfriends would no longer be able to access birth control easily/affordably and thus they were likely to not agree to sex, or, the boys would be wearing condoms and with that failure rate, pushing strollers. I calmly walked out of the room and as soon as the door closed, a resounding chorus of Fuck Trump, I'll NEVER vote for him or a Republican ensued. What a rewarding afternoon.
DeleteWell done!
DeleteResign small hands!

Hillary Clinton on Friday cheered the cancellation of a vote on a GOP ObamaCare repeal bill, calling it a "victory for all Americans" but cautioning that "this fight isn't over yet."
ReplyDeleteClinton tweeted an official statement along with a handful of stories from people who have benefitted from ObamaCare.
"Today was a victory for the 24,000,000 people at risk of losing their health insurance, for seniors, for families battling the quiet epidemic of addiction, for new moms and women everywhere," Clinton said in her statement.
"Most of all, it's a victory for anyone who believes affordable health care is a human right. We cannot forget: This victory happened because people in every cover of our country committed their time and energy to calling their representatives, showing up at town hall meetings, and making their voices heard."
"The fight isn't over yet," she added, saying that "we will have to push back on future bad ideas and embrace good ones to make health care more affordable."
Clinton ended her series of tweets with a call to "continue to stand up, organize, resist, put forth good ideas to improve the existing system and people's lives."

We will never beat Republicans again if we are not honest about ALL the reasons why we lost to DonaldcTrump. Of all people.
DeleteNo one believes you.
DeleteDNC's strategy was flawed. Google it if you're open to facts. They ASS U MEd that those that voted for Obama would vote for Hillary. They failed to deliver on past promises. They took voters for granted. They didn't listen to their boots on the ground. They abandoned their 50 state strategy. They have been giving up control at the local and state level for almost a decade. They failed to make a case to the common people as to why they should give the Democrats one more chance when they have failed to deliver on previous promises. And most of all, they failed to continually remind them of what had been done for them.
DeleteThe last thing you need to tell an angry voter is you should have gone to college and gotten a better education because those jobs aren't coming back. That may be reality but that's not what they want to hear.
Trump told them what they wanted to hear and he made them feel like he was listening and that he cared. Sure it was all a con and he is a big fat liar. But this was an election of emotions, not facts.
The DNC blew it. Hillary should have paid more attention to what Bernie Sanders was doing. If she had pivoted and campaigned more like Bernie, if she had even picked him as a running mate, she probably would have won the electoral college and her popular vote would be even higher.
Mialuppa, remember that Hillary Clinton got almost 3,000,000 more votes that Trump. It was the distribution that was skewed. In fact, it was so skewed that I really suspect that there was serious meddling in key states.

Kochs pledge millions to GOPers in 2018 -- if they vote no on health care bill
ReplyDeleteThe advocacy groups helmed by Charles and David Koch have unveiled a new pool of money for advertisements, field programs and mailings that would exclude those who vote for the health care bill they oppose on Thursday. The effort, which they described as worth millions of dollars, is an explicit warning to on-the-fence Republicans from one of the most influential players in electoral politics not to cross them.
The Koch-aligned networks oppose the bill because they think it does not do enough to scale back former President Barack Obama's health care policies.
"We want to make certain that lawmakers understand the policy consequences of voting for a law that keeps Obamacare intact," Americans for Prosperity president Tim Phillips said. "We have a history of following up and holding politicians accountable, but we will also be there to support and thank the champions who stand strong and keep their promise."

In the moments after it was announced that his health care bill was dead and pulled from consideration, President Donald Trump had pinpointed the culprit. Democrats, he explained, were to blame for the failure because they refused to provide him with any of their votes.
“We had no Democrat support. We had no votes from the Democrats,” Trump explained. “With no Democrats on board, we couldn’t quite get there.”
“When you get no votes from the other side ― meaning the Democrats ― it is a very difficult situation,” he said elsewhere.
Given how divided the alt-right and moderate GOP Congress is, we might have the gift of seeing NONE of his bills make it through to a vote, or watching that asshole get impeached
Why on earth would Donald Trump think that any Democrats in the House would have voted for Ryancare? It eviscerated the ACA. Trump is such a chump.

These guys expect things will be handed to them on a silver platter....we all expect nothing good from them. I keep thinking of wanting and having...eat your defeat.
ReplyDeleteThere is a lesson to be learned here, become a learner and not the learned. Every day is a new day to kick some GOP butt!
The toy 'vehicle' suits childman Trump and his tiny hands. He is a 70 year old baby.
ReplyDeleteHis ludicrous assertions that the bill was pulled because of the Democrats will be believed by his cretinous base(as if that is a bad thing for them). His base is incorrigible and staggeringly ignorant. They will continue to vote against their self interests based on the propaganda put out by the RW oligarchs.
ReplyDeleteWhine on. Donnie Dumbshit. You expected bipartisan support? Face it, those GOPers that would have voted for were facing political suicide and they knew it.
DeleteThe more he blames Democrats for his shitty bills not passing, the more power he gives them. I'm delighted to think his idiot base is blaming Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer.
DeleteMore, please.
I've been wondering what Schumer had to do with a bill hurtling through the House of Representatives. Schumer is a senator, not a representative. God, Trump is stupid.

Trumpcare? Great healthcare includes no emergency care, no maternity care, no lab, no preventive, no rape kits no care what so ever except penile implant and Viagra. Yep that's trump care. The dick is so obnoxious and insane and ugly no body can stand him. Gosh, the most hated sob on the planet. Toxic assclowns careers are over.
ReplyDeleteOf course the Pasty-faced Twatwaffle is going to blame somebody else for his failures. It's what he does!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd maybe people will realize, based on the hideous meanness and hypocrisy from the Alt-right, that these sad excuses for human beings need to be far, far away from the halls of power. Send them back to their snaggle-toothed cousins and let them wither into nasty impotence with polydactyl hands and feet.
The American Affordable Care Act has saved more life's in 7 yrs than one could imagine. The pre existing clause alone saved life. Everyone has a pre existing condition these days. Families are facing critical disease decisions when least expecting it. Accidents and on going care. It is awful that asshole could sit in our building and threaten the entire country that he will take away what insurance we have. What a nasty lousy ugly lying person. He will never be president of the united states of America. never.
ReplyDeleteThere is no American Affordable Care Act. It is the Affordable Care Act.
DeleteTrumpcare was called American .. blah blah act. To make it sound more patriotic.
Well you can call it the ACA but it is an American product. Unlike the un-American trumpcare fiasco. Nothing about trump is patriotic. He is a fraud, fake, liar and lousy ugly actor. He will never be president of the usa because he did not win he lost and stole the election and will pay the price for his deceitful hateful criminal treason and espionage. Russian putin set him up to fail because he cannot pay his debt to him.
DeleteNot to mention simply being a woman is a pre-existing condition under Trumpcare.
DeleteThis is totally silly, but .... the array of little coffee containers on the credenza behind Hair Head? Proof once again that money won't get ya class.
ReplyDeleteFor your viewing pleasure the wags of Twitter drag Trump and Ryan through their own mess (and by "mess" I mean the euphemism you use in front of your boss to describe what the puppy left after someone left the WHOLE pepperoni extra-large pizza within pup's reach and didn't lock his crate door -- and the "puppy" is a six month old St. Bernard.)
ReplyDeletehttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/twitter-tweets-health-care-vote-trump_us_58d57aaee4b02a2eaab3fd64?lk3m&
My father called and said “they dumped trump”, I nearly had a heart attack. I thought they got rid of The Donald, instead he was talking about trumpDoesn’tCare.
ReplyDeleteWell the cowards were too chicken to even take it to a vote, next they will be telling us it would have passed, but we decided not to vote on it. Little donnie’s head is going to start spinning with all the lies he is going to tell.
They also gave themselves an out by not voting, come election time, they can lie and say to the trump supporters, I was for it, to the rest of us sane folk, I was going to vote against it.
I am going to enjoy this defeat, after scaring people for months with their threats to rob us of our healthcare, to end up trying to replace it with tax breaks for the rich, they deserve so much more bad news.
I hope their Supreme Court justice is not confirmed.
Then we can move on to Impeach and Refund.
OT Gryph, when you posted this, you had a visitor from Finland. Way cool.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking on Fox tonight, Charles Krauthammer predicted: "Single-payer in 10 years."

DeleteWell he is such an expert don't cha know.He joined because he needed a job and was too stupid to do anything else. He has made money off of his MOH ever since. That ass is going to ride that train for the rest of his life.
DeleteHe fits right in with the Palin clan, uneducated fame seeking whores. Name another current MOH that has used it for money. They are out there but unless you look it up online you don't know their names.
Can you imagine this interview?
Dakota: " Yeah, the bad guys are out there and we need to like umm stop it".
Interviewer: "Thanks Dakota for your insight into this horrific problem"
Dakota: "Thanks for having me on."
If they would have given him more than 2 minutes he would have said "My wife sells diet drinks, no really you shit all day and it works! and did you know my Mom In Law is Sarah Palin? "
Blah blah blah, duh, why don't you share the REAL reason you're moving to Austin.

What does MOH know about anything? This just proves that Fox News is really scraping the bottom of the barrel now. I thought they were doing that when Sarah Palin had her gig with them.

The GOP had no plan and have plotted to take down the ACA since the day it was put in place. Why should we be surprised?
ReplyDeletelololol
ReplyDeleteRepublicans more afraid of voters than tRUMP!!!
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/24/us/politics/trump-white-house-health-care.html
"WASHINGTON — When Speaker Paul D. Ryan arrived at the White House on Friday to inform President Trump that the health care bill he had made his first major legislative push could not pass, Mr. Trump had one reaction: He wanted revenge.
Furious at rebellious Republicans who refused to back the measure, Mr. Trump demanded that defectors cast “no” votes for all to see — even if it meant the measure’s high-profile defeat, broadcast live on television.
But over a lunch of chicken, brussels sprouts and twice-baked potatoes in the Oval Office, Mr. Ryan pleaded with Mr. Trump to reconsider.
A loss could do lasting political damage to Republicans who supported the contentious bill, Mr. Ryan argued, especially those in competitive districts who were vulnerable to primary challenges. It would do nothing to isolate or punish the Freedom Caucus, the conservative faction that had resisted the measure all along, he added.
And it could alienate rank-and-file Republicans needed to push through other challenging initiatives in the weeks to come, including an increase in the debt ceiling, a sweeping tax cut and the president’s promised $1 trillion infrastructure package."
Apparently what really angered Trump was that the tax cuts to the richest didn't pass. Trump had not wanted the tax cuts in the bill but apparently Ryan wanted to sneak them in. That shows what he feels about healthcare for Americans.

Are we tired of winning yet? Trump talking about how "Tired we are going to be from winning"
ReplyDeleteMakes me laugh at him and all the losers who bought his bullshit. You are not winning tRump and even your own party knows you are on your way out! Every man for himself!
Can you just see it? Rebublicans like rats deserting the sinking ship.

Trumpcare ultimately failed because it was all about denying healthcare, not providing it.
ReplyDeleteEven Republicans aren't stupid enough to think they can get re-elected by taking away their constituents' healthcare.
Well looks like lots of people are happy. I like happy people.
ReplyDeleteI don't know where he got it, but you *MUST* save that photoshopped LittleTikes Cozy Coupe image that Keith Olbermann used. It is so going to come in handy.
ReplyDeleteTrump wishes he had pulled out when he got Marla Maples pregnant while still married to Ivana.
ReplyDeletePoor Tiffany Trump just cant measure up.She never sat on her Daddy's lap like Ivanka did.Trump rates Ivanka a 10 and Tiffany a 6.
It's a disgusting low life that publicly states preference to one child over another.
DeleteHey! give Trump a break he is sad right now.
ReplyDeleteHe did not even go to Mar A Lago this weekend saving us 3 million bucks. He thought he would waltz in like the conquering hero to applause but sadly it was not to be so he holed up in the White House staring at the tv, texting Ivanka for support and texting Melania asking her to look especially "hot" and maybe she needs to actually move to Washington to start her bully agenda or whatever his team came up with for her to be a champion of.
Melania's response was " It's your bag Donald. I like New York you should have asked me how i would feel about it if those idiots actually voted for you and i am tired of competing with your daughter for attention.
"“We didn’t have the votes, so we’re not going pull it up and just kill it. We’re going to keep working till we get something that does work,” said Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga).
ReplyDelete“This process doesn’t end just because this one bill’s been taken off the table,” said Rep. Bradley Byrne (R-Ala.). “It just shows that our first attempt didn’t work. This is not our last attempt. There will have to be other actions here.”"
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/republicans-keep-trying-repeal-obamacare_us_58d5a268e4b02a2eaab44c18?section=us_politics
Told you so.
Trump's statement, "[w]e pulled it," was meant to show that he's the boss of it all. I don't think he understands anything about how the US government works, especially how Congress works.
DeleteBeaglemom
I mean, who in their right mind would buy a health insurance plan that does not cover doctors visits or hospital stays or health screenings?!
ReplyDeleteLook, they were never going to end Obamacare. They never intended to. What they wanted was to look like they were trying to. Because that's what their voting base wanted. But the insurance companies and the medical industry who give the big bucks to politicians they like didn't want it gone. The Republicans have all the control, but they didn't really have the will. That means we all lost again.
ReplyDeleteHow do you figure that you lost?
Deletehttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/trump-says-he-should-let-obamacare-collapse-thats-cruel-and-irresponsible_us_58d59c8ee4b03787d358cd76?section=us_politics
ReplyDelete"The president of the United States and members of the party that controls Congress are saying that they see problems in the health care system and their plan is to stand by and do nothing while people suffer.
This is breathtakingly cynical, and reveals the Republican Party’s priorities. Getting rid of the dreaded Obamacare at any cost is more important to Trump and his party than acting to improve the health care system for the people they represent."
"Rather than try to help people, Trump will actively avoid helping. Even if you accept his highly debatable premise that the Affordable Care Act is irreparable, what he’s saying is that because he and the Congress his party controls failed at the first hurdle, they will now do nothing to solve the problems with the American health care system they themselves have been decrying for seven years.
Indeed, the Trump administration instead has taken steps to suppress health insurance enrollment and make the ACA work worse. More may be coming."
"At this point ― seven years and a day after Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law ― legislating and regulating to make its health insurance markets work better is a responsibility Trump and congressional Republicans accepted when they took their oaths of office.
This isn’t “helping Obamacare,” it’s helping Americans. There’s no such thing as Obamacare anymore. It’s just the health insurance system.
In the words of House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) on Friday: “Obamacare’s the law of the land.”
But if you’re one of those people who can’t afford your health insurance or your deductible, Barack Obama can’t help you anymore. Donald Trump can. And he just told you he won’t."
How....presidential.
Sad.
