Witness in largest money laundering scheme in Russian history either fell or was thrown from a fourth story window in Moscow.

Courtesy of Buzzfeed:

A Russian lawyer who was a witness in a US federal court case connected to the largest money-laundering scheme in Russian history was hospitalized in critical condition after plunging four stories on Tuesday in Moscow, a spokesman said.

There are conflicting reports about what happened to the lawyer, Nikolai Gorokhov. His spokesman, William Browder — who was an alleged victim in the money-laundering scheme — says he was “thrown from the fourth floor of his apartment building.” Russian media, often controlled by the state, says he “fell while he and workers were trying to lift a Jacuzzi into his apartment.”

“His name is redacted in all the documents,” Browder told BuzzFeed News regarding court filings in the US Southern District. “The feds were very concerned for his safety. I can confirm his role.” The Department of Justice didn’t immediately return a request for comment.

The case, USA v. Prevezon, is on the brink of going to trial in Manhattan — right in the middle of a massive shakeup of federal prosecutors by President Trump.

Gee, what another coinky dink.

Do you want another one?

The bank that lent Donald Trump 300 million dollars is also implicated in this money laundering scheme.

Boy the coincidences just keep piling up don't they?

Just like the bodies.

Kremlin blames ‘bathtub accident’ for Russian dissident being thrown out of fourth story window

Gorokhov was one day away from testifying in opposition to Putin

Yesterday we brought you the disturbing story of Russian attorney Nikolai Gorokhov, who was thrown out the window of his fourth floor Moscow apartment building just one day before he was scheduled to give testimony that would have been detrimental to Vladimir Putin. We also pointed out that the Kremlin already appeared to be laying the groundwork to frame it as an accident.

Sure enough, Russian state-controlled media is now claiming that Nikolai Gorokhov wasn’t thrown out of the window, but he instead accidentally fell out of the window while trying to move a bathtub or hot tub. These Russian news outlets, according to the NY Times, are even going so far as to post photos of a shattered tub outside Gorokhov’s building. He somehow managed to survive the fall but at last word he’s still in intensive care, meaning it’s probably impossible for him to tell his side of the story right now. But his political allies are speaking up on his behalf.

“The Republican chairman of the House Oversight Committee is joining his Democratic counterpart in demanding that the White House turn over former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn’s security clearance applications.

Reps. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) and Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) sent letters Wednesday requesting information on Flynn from the White House, FBI, Defense Department and the director of national intelligence.

Cummings originally requested some of the information last week after obtaining documents showing Flynn was paid nearly $34,000 for a speech he gave in 2015 in Moscow celebrating the Russian propaganda outlet RT.

Chaffetz and Cummings are trying to figure out, among other things, if Flynn disclosed this payment when he applied for a security clearance to be Trump’s national security adviser. Flynn resigned from the post last month after it became clear he misled his colleagues about his pre-inauguration phone calls with Russia’s ambassador.

Federal staffers panicked by conservative media attacks

A spate of stories in Breitbart and other outlets have singled out individual career employees, questioning their loyalty to Trump.

Conservative news outlets, including one with links to a top White House official, are singling out individual career government employees for criticism, suggesting in articles that certain staffers will not be sufficiently loyal to President Donald Trump by virtue of their work under former President Barack Obama.

The articles — which have appeared in Breitbart News, the Conservative Review and other outlets — have alarmed veteran officials in both parties as well as current executive branch staffers. They say the stories are adding to tensions between career staffers and political appointees as they begin to implement Trump’s agenda, and they worry that the stories could inspire Trump to try purging federal agencies of perceived enemies.

The claims posted on the conservative sites include allegations of anti-Israel and pro-Iran bias against staffers at institutions such as the State Department and the National Security Council. Breitbart News, whose former executive chairman Steve Bannon is now Trump’s chief strategist, has even published lists of workers that the president should fire.

Washington veterans say they can’t recall similar targeting of government employees, who are required to stay apolitical and generally shun the spotlight.

“It’s deeply unfair to single people out and question their loyalty,” said William Burns, president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and a former longtime diplomat. “It’s demoralizing for institutions. It’s demoralizing for professionals, and it’s offensive.”

FEC Commissioner Refuses To Let Trump Slide On Voter Fraud Claim

    “Facts matter, Mr. President.”

...“This allegation of a vast conspiracy, involving thousands of people committing felony criminal acts aimed at stealing the election, has deeply disturbed citizens throughout America. I have heard from many of them, including proud and patriotic New Englanders who are shocked by the allegation and feel that it impugns their historic role in our democracy,” she wrote in her Wednesday letter.

As several states across the country move to pass voting restrictions, Weintraub urged Trump to consider the weight that his allegations carry.

“As the President of the United States of America ― our head of government and head of state ― your words carry considerable persuasive and legal weight. Because of the trust that Americans place in their presidency, some lawmakers around the country may be tempted to rely on your words and move forward with unwarranted voter restrictions,” she wrote. “Indeed, this could result in deterring or preventing American citizens from voting.”

    O/T

There’s An Insidious New Plot To Make Trans Kids’ Lives Hell

A student in Pennsylvania is suing his school for treating a trans student like a human.

On Tuesday, a teenage boy in Pennsylvania filed a lawsuit against his school district in federal court because he doesn’t want to share a locker room with a transgender student.

The teen, known in the lawsuit as “Joel Doe,” claims that using the same locker room as a trans student has caused him “embarrassment and humiliation.” He is asking for damages and he wants the school district to rescind its current policy that allows trans students to use the restroom or locker room that corresponds with their authentic gender identity.

According to HuffPost’s Kim Bellware, Doe believes “unconsented exposure to persons of the opposite sex in various states of undress creates a sexually harassing, hostile environment,” which violates his rights under the federal Title IX law that prohibits sex discrimination.

In other words, the cis student believes he is being discriminated against.

I know. This is some next level “Twilight Zone” grade shit going on right here. But it’s not just twisted, it’s also diabolically brilliant.

Doe and his legal team are asserting that “people who oppose the equal participation of transgender people in society are the ones being victimized,” Harper Jean Tobin, director of policy for the National Center for Transgender Equality, told Bellware.

Essentially, this means that instead of claiming that trans people are (only?) a physical danger to cisgender (non-trans) people ― an argument proven baseless ― the lawsuit is positing sexual harassment and mental anguish as a possible side effect a cis student might experience upon seeing trans students being treated like human beings.

So now it’s not (just?) being raped or attacked in bathrooms that cis people are afraid of. Now it’s not (just?) the wives and daughters we’re trying to protect. Now we must look out for men and boys who are so terrified by the idea of maybe getting a glimpse of body parts that might not match their own that they can’t even function.

    It’s a cunning move.

It sounds like this is a person who is pre-surgery and still has female genitalia and breasts, and I can kind of understand if a teenaged boy doesn't want to be confronted with female genitalia and breasts in a locker room setting. 'm rather sure that it would cause unwanted sexual arousal even if the trans kid is presenting as a male person, however he can avert his eyes from this person while they are a state of undress, or perhaps the school could politely ask the trans kid to change in private until he is actually transformed into a physical male.

Lock him up: Devin Nunes didn’t just disqualify himself on Trump-Russia, he incriminated himself

Nunes took off the gloves today and began punching himself

Heading into today, we already knew that House Intelligence Committee chair Devin Nunes was a political rube and a panicky idiot. He’s been the poster child for why Congressional committee chairmanship shouldn’t be decided on seniority. But today Nunes became something different. His historically stupid panic move not only disqualified himself from the Trump-Russia investigation; he incriminated himself in the worst way possible for his party.

Nunes ran to the media today with an unsubstantiated claim that members of the Donald Trump transition team were under surveillance and investigation. It was a ham fisted attempt at validating Trump’s thoroughly discredited claim that President Obama had been wiretapping Trump Tower. But if Nunes is telling the truth, then he just purposely leaked crucial classified information about one of the most important ongoing FBI investigations in history. And that’s a felony.

Throughout the campaign, we had to endure Donald Trump and the Republican Party spend a year insisting that Hillary Clinton should go to prison for sending harmless low level classified information over a private email server that was never leaked to anyone (in the end it turned out she never did knowingly send any classified information, and the entire thing was a fake scandal). But now Nunes, by his own admission, is guilty of doing something infinitely more egregious with classified information than his party ever falsely accused Hillary of doing.

    So what now?

    https://www.palmerreport.com/opinion/nunes-lock-him-up-devin-trump-russia/2023/

Schiff and Nunes now set for historic showdown in Round 2 of House Intel Trump-Russia hearings

Devin Nunes just scandalized the whole thing, and now here comes Sally Yates

Thanks to Devin Nunes, the Republican Party has begun throwing Donald Trump under the Russia bus

...Even before Devin Nunes staged his bizarre, counterproductive, and likely illegal Trump-Russia meltdown today, it was already clear that he was in over his head. Now that he’s either leaked real classified information or invented phony classified information in a panicked effort to protect Donald Trump from his Russia scandal, it appears Nunes has unwittingly forced his own Republican Party to throw Trump under the bus. And that shift is beginning already, in real time.

...Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on Nunes’ committee, held a televised press conference and quickly voiced his view that Nunes had tainted the entire committee – and so he called for the formation of an independent investigation instead. Shortly thereafter, Republican Senator John McCain made a scheduled appearance on Greta Van Susteren’s MSNBC show, and he echoed Schiff’s call for an independent investigation.

This is specifically what Trump was looking to avoid, because he was hoping that his allies in Congress like Nunes would misuse their positions on the investigative committees to run interference for him. But now, leading voices in both parties of Congress are calling for the current investigations to be scrapped in favor of the kind of fundamentally serious independent investigation that Trump and his minions won’t be able to sabotage.

In so doing, these Republicans are throwing Trump under the Russia bus – not because they necessarily want to, but because today’s idiotic display by Devin Nunes left them with no choice. With their own credibility suddenly on the line, they’re choosing themselves over Trump, and not even thinking twice about it.

Bombshell Report Claims Trump Campaign Worked With Russia To Topple Hillary Clinton

...The FBI is now reviewing that information, which includes human intelligence, travel, business and phone records and accounts of in-person meetings, according to those U.S. officials. The information is raising the suspicions of FBI counterintelligence investigators that the coordination may have taken place, though officials cautioned that the information was not conclusive and that the investigation is ongoing.

Rachel Maddow Says There Is ‘Something New and Big’ Happening With Trump-Russia Scandal

    ...Maddow said:

'Whether or not the intelligence committees continue their investigations, the top Democrat who is part of that investigation in the House says there is something new and big that has just arisen since Monday that is evidence of collusion between Trump and the Russians during the Russian attack. That’s a big deal. And so whoever is going to carry on with this investigation, it seems more important than ever that this investigation carry on.'

The MSNBC star recalled how, just Monday night, Congressman Schiff was saying there wasn’t much more than circumstantial evidence showing coordination between the Trump campaign and the Russians. At the time, even that was pretty big news.

But in a matter of two days, Schiff’s tone on the matter suggests there is, indeed, something big and new that has been uncovered during the behind-the-scenes investigation.

Just a few hours ago, in fact, a bombshell CNN report claimed new information shows that Trump campaign associates may have worked with the Russians to defeat Hillary Clinton. If proven true, it would be a stunning development.

As Maddow said on Wednesday, this scandal seems to be getting deeper and each new revelation is more explosive than the last.

FBI hits paydirt on evidence Donald Trump campaign colluded with Russia to harm Hillary Clinton

...This is a crucial shift, because it means that members of the Donald Trump campaign are now being pursued as criminal conspirators. The Russian hacking was a felony; knowingly being involved in a conspiracy to commit a felony means you’re essentially just as guilty of that felony. The CNN report does not identify which Trump advisers were part of the illegal conspiracy. However, it’s long been widely reported that the FBI has been investigating Paul Manafort, Michael Flynn, Carter Page, and Roger Stone for their Russian contacts.

This new revelation may have been what House Intelligence Committee ranking member Adam Schiff was referring to earlier today when he upgraded his own assessment of the evidence. Schiff had stated as recently as two days ago that there was “circumstantial evidence” of collusion, and “direct evidence” of deception. But today he held a televised press conference and stated that there is now “more” than circumstantial evidence of collusion. Schiff is one of two members of the committee who are being actively briefed on the most severely classified evidence in the Trump-Russia investigation.

Even if the FBI does not have evidence that Donald Trump himself was involved in this criminal conspiracy, it can use the guilt of his advisers to get them to flip on Trump in exchange for leniency.

Paul Manafort Tried to Help Russian Oligarch Suspected of Mob Ties Get a US Visa

This was before Trump's onetime campaign chief was hired by the Russian to boost Vladimir Putin's image.

On Wednesday morning, the Associated Press released a bombshell report revealing that Paul Manafort, who ran Donald Trump's campaign for several months, had secretly worked for a Russian billionaire a decade ago to promote Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

The news service noted that Manafort "proposed in a confidential strategy plan...that he would influence politics, business dealings and news coverage inside the United States, Europe and the former Soviet republics to benefit the Putin government." Manafort pitched this idea to Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, a close Putin ally, and in 2006 signed a $10 million annual contract for the project. The AP's report shows Trump's campaign was managed by an operative who had received millions from a Putin crony to bolster the Russian leader's image in the United States at a time when US-Russia relations were tense.

Manafort's relationship with Deripaska began at least several years before they inked this contract when the Russian oligarch was banned from entering the United States due to his suspected connections to Russian organized crime. In the early 2000s, the aluminum magnate enlisted Manafort, a veteran lobbyist and fixer with a reputation for representing foreign despots and thugs, to help him secure a visa so he could travel to the United States, according to a source with knowledge of the arrangement,

In the late 1990s, the US State Department had refused to allow Deripaska (reportedly one of the richest men in Russia) visit the United States. As the Guardian reported in 2008:

Devin Nunes just unwittingly outed Paul Ryan as a conspirator in Donald Trump’s Russia scandal

Nunes is an idiot, but Ryan orchestrated today’s leak debacle

...Ryan sent Nunes to deliver secret evidence in a crucial FBI investigation directly to the subject of that investigation. That’s Obstruction 101. And while Nunes might honestly be too dumb to have understood as much, Ryan knew better. So why did he do it? 2016 didn’t just give us “fake news.” It likely gave us false memories.

A psychologist explains how easy it is to form false memories — and what that means for the future of our shared reality.

Here’s a reasonable fear: 20 years from now, very few people are going to agree on the details of our shared history.

Recently, I spoke Henry “Roddy” Roediger, a psychologist at Washington University in St. Louis, one of the world’s leading experts on memory and learning. In recent years, he has focused his research on a what’s known as “collective memory,” or the tendency for like-minded groups of people to form unique — and biased — narratives about events.

His research and others’ paint a grim picture for the future. Political polarization, misinformation, the internet, and the human mind are working in lockstep to fracture reality into countless pieces.

Why? It’s extremely easy to sequester ourselves in bubbles that protect our worldview. And never before has there been so much misinformation that seeks to prey on our preconceived notions.

And the most important reason: The human mind is incredibly susceptible to forming false memories. This tendency is kicked into overdrive on the internet, where false ideas are amplified and spread like a virus among like-minded people.

My conversation with Roediger is below, edited for length and clarity.
