Donald Trump has the lowest approval ratings of any other president elected since World War 2.

Courtesy of Gallup:

Donald Trump averaged 41% job approval during his first quarter as president, 14 percentage points lower than any other president in Gallup's polling history. Bill Clinton had the previous low mark of 55%. The average first-quarter rating among post-World War II presidents elected to their first term is 61%, with John Kennedy's 74% the highest.

You know I so want to celebrate this, but the fact is that this asshole represents all of us now so unfortunately this is also a reflection on the entire country.

God I hate Vladimir Putin right now.

Hoover was president from 1929 (March) until March of 1933. Hoover and his administration and their Congress did absolutely nothing in the face of the onslaught of the Great Depression starting in September 1929. Massive stock market and bank failures; business closings, job losses; streets lined with unemployed men waiting for food from "soup kitchens." Meanwhile, the federal government, under the GOP, remained frozen in their ineptitude and inability to abandon any of their late 19th century capitalist doctrines in part, perhaps, because they were so afraid of the "red menace." People really suffered - in cities and in rural areas as well. Interesting especially because Hoover made his fame by being in charge of relief to war-torn Europe in the immediate aftermath of WWI. My parents lived through those years and their lifelong frugality was partly in response to their experiences during those years.

    Liar, fraud, cheater.

Donald Trump’s inauguration fund: fake people, fake companies, and fake addresses on vacant lots

Crowdsourced research led by Christina Wilkie reveals astounding results

It turns out the biggest controversy surrounding Donald Trump’s inauguration had nothing to do with crowd size or the fact that almost no one wanted to perform at it. After two major newspapers published the records of donations made to the inauguration, another reporter led a crowdsourced effort which revealed that many of the records may have been falsified. That includes instances of donations being made from “people” whose names don’t exist anywhere else, and whose listed mailing addresses are vacant lots.

The process began when the New York Times and Washington Post published the Trump inauguration donation records. They were suspicious from the beginning, because Trump’s inauguration ended up being a poorly attended and comparatively small event, not justifying the large amount of donated funds. But from there, Huffington Post reporter Christina Wilkie put the records into an editable online Google Document and asked her followers on social media to help her investigate the more than fifteen hundred supposed donors. The results thus far are astounding. A few examples:

    – On line 183, a $400,000 donation is listed from “Isabel T. John” who doesn’t appear to be a real person according to any available public records. Moreover one participant confirmed first hand that the listed mailing address for the donation has been a vacant lot for years.

    – On lines 726 and 727 of the document, a combined $100,000 was donated from the mailing address of a nonprofit organization that appears to have only had $500 in revenue to begin with.

There are a number of these kinds of seemingly outright falsified donations to the Donald Trump inauguration. There are also quite a few entries in which the listed zip code is on the other side of the country from the listed city and state. The collaborative research is still ongoing, as the Google Doc continues to evolve. You can find it here. And if you want to follow Christina Wilkie, who spearheaded this project, you can find her here.

Trump Russia Defense a ‘Bullsh*t Tornado’ of Magic Spells and Rejected X-Files Scripts

Ever wonder what bizarre alchemy is holding together the defense of Donald Trump and his GOP allies against charges of collusion with Russia? GOP strategist Rick Wilson offered an answer in an epic 13-tweet takedown, and it’s not pretty.

The formula he reveals includes early-onset dementia, lies, and worse: pitted against the findings of the US intelligence community (IC) is a ‘bullshit tornado’ of “Spells of Forgetting” and “rejected X-Files scripts.”

As former Clinton-era White House staffer Claude Taylor observed, this is “State of the Art Twitter.” Read on, and enjoy the epic takedown:

There are still a few Republicans on the committee who believe Yates can be a foil for the dumb “unmasking/leakers” strategy. This is dumb, because it was led by Devin “Patsy” Nunes on direct orders from WH/Bannon. This basal, twitch-reflex “But Obummer” defense of Trump’s Russia ties is understandable but also literally betting the GOP’s future on Trump and his team telling House GOP Intel Committee members the truth.

Given Trump is a serial fabulist surrounded by the same does this strike any Republican in the House as a good bet? That the denials don’t come with caveats, exceptions, codicils, memory lapses, early-onset dementia, attorney-client privilege, Spells of Forgetting, lies, obfuscations, lacuane [sic], evasions, rejected X-files spec scripts, and his usual tenuous ability to tell the truth about simple facts like the day of the week and his own name. So keeping up the bullshit tornado as per the last hearings is a weak hand.

It’s also been VERY clear the House Intel staff has had enough. The GOP members know now that the Trump/Russia intel didn’t come DOWN from the Obama WH but UP from organic collection. The hissy-fit, stompy-foot “conservative” writers trying to turn this into the Evil Kenyan Muslim Sleeper Agent’s Dirty Tricks are free to continue. Soldier on, clickservative warriors. Soldier on.

    And the concluding three tweets:

    VANITY FAIR:
INSIDE THE TRUMP MARRIAGE: MELANIA’S BURDEN

Until November 8, Melania Trump’s marriage provided her with a golden Fifth Avenue fortress, at a price—putting up with her husband’s humiliations and boorishness. From Melania’s ill-fated campaign appearances to her apparent reluctance to embrace the role of First Lady: how a very private woman is coping with the intense public scrutiny of her marriage

.... from almost the first moments of Inauguration Day, during the ceremonial arrival at the White House, it seemed something was amiss with the Trumps. Perhaps you’ve seen the clip: Donald and Melania’s black S.U.V. arrives at the White House, where Barack and Michelle Obama are waiting to greet them. Donald bolts from the car and marches up the stairs, leaving behind Melania, in her powder-blue, Jackie-esque suit, carrying a large Tiffany box.

..... Trump found in Melania the perfect mate. “She doesn’t make waves,” says Bytner. “She speaks only when spoken to.

.... When she went out, it seemed to be with older men, only for dinner,

......The union made perfect sense for Donald too. After demanding Ivana andneedy Marla, Melania would be the perfect mate, one who would be an advertisement for his virility while giving him his “space.”

..... While instead, Melania . . . really no fights.” For her part, Melania would get a luxurious home where she could indulge her hobbies—Pilates and reading fashion magazines, according to People—in peace, and a promise that she would never have to return to drab Eastern-European prospects. Donald accompanied Melania to her homeland once. “I was there for about 13 minutes,” he later said to Larry King with Melania by his side. “We landed. I said, Hi, Mom. Hi, Dad. Bye.” .....

Frankly, I don't think we should have to pay for anything for the third wife until she assumes her role as first lady by living in the White House (although I shudder at the thought) and behaving like a 21st century first lady. WSJ: No Lawmakers Representing Border Region Support Request For Wall Funds

Not one member of Congress representing the region that President Donald Trump's proposed border wall would run through has declared support for his request for funding to begin construction, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

Per the report, the Wall Street Journal surveyed lawmakers who represent territory on the United States' southwest border and found that most are opposed to Trump's request for funding to begin work on the wall, while many still have questions.

"Not a single member of the House or Senate representing the region expressed support for the funding request," per the report, which noted that lawmakers on both sides of the aisle were included in the survey.

"There is no way in hell I support the request for $1.4 billion in border wall spending," Rep. Filemon Vela (D-TX) told the Wall Street Journal.

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) said in a statement obtained by the Wall Street Journal that he "will continue to review options as the current appropriations process moves forward."

On the campaign trail, Trump often repeated his signature pledge to "build a great great wall" and "have Mexico pay for that wall." In March, however, the White House requested more than $1 billion from Congress to begin construction.

Dem Lawmakers Respond To Mulvaney's O'Care, Border Wall Proposal: No Way!

Democratic members of Congress shot down White House budget chief Mick Mulvaney's proposal on Friday to fund Obamacare subsidies to insurers in exchange for funding to build President Donald Trump's proposed border wall.

"We'd offer them $1 of CSR payments for $1 of wall payments. Right now that's the offer that we've given to our Democratic colleagues," Mulvaney said at a Bloomberg Live event on Friday as quoted by the Hill, referring to cost-sharing reduction payments.

A spokesman for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) in a statement Friday called the proposal a "gambit to hold hostage health care for millions of Americans" and "a complete non-starter."

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) on Friday called Trump's proposed wall "a stupid use of money" and pledged to block "any funding for it."

Sen. Ted Lieu (D-CA) tweeted that he would only vote to fund Trump's "stupid" proposed wall "if Russia pays for it."

The first weeks of Trump’s presidency—our introduction to this man as chief executive—visited havoc on the nation. His tweets were impolite, immature, and menacing, from targeting a sitting federal judge to attacks on The New York Times. His executive orders defy any logical and accepted manner of shaping the federal government to a new president’s will: witness his Muslim ban which is a rebuke to the nation’s history of welcoming the stranger, regardless of faith or origin.

As he moved into his first month in the Oval Office, the transgressions continued: He has insulted the leaders of Australia and Mexico; attacked the concept of an independent judiciary; affronted a revered civil rights leader, John Lewis; excommunicated leading news outlets from White House briefings while slandering the press as the “enemy”; suggested a moral equivalence between state-sanctioned killings in Russia and actions of the United States; turned his Florida resort into an open-air situation room; pandered to anti-Semites and racists; persistently lied about his electoral college “landslide;” and impugned the integrity of his predecessor with baseless claims of wiretapping.

AP FACT CHECK: How Trump Takes Credit, Assigns Blame

One of the most consistent features of President Donald Trump’s public statements is his drive to take credit and assign blame. It’s a tendency that consistently lands him in trouble with history, either recent or long ago, and has been on display as he approaches his 100th day in office.

Over the past week, the president claimed unprecedented achievement as he tried to shape perceptions of his 100-day legacy. He then pooh-poohed that benchmark as time ran short for him to get big things done. He disparaged the record of his predecessor, specifically on fighting the violent MS-13 gang, and Trump addressed his abandonment of a central campaign promise on China by denying he’d changed his mind.

Ezra Cohen-Watnick: Inside the Rise of Trump’s Invisible Man in the White House

...A high-income enclave of Volvo-driving, wine-sipping, NPR-listening lawyers, lobbyists, journalists and government bureaucrats, Chevy Chase is such a liberal stronghold that local Republicans said last year they were afraid to plant Trump campaign posters on their lawns.

All of which makes the town an unlikely launch pad for Ezra Cohen-Watnick, the suddenly prominent White House National Security Council official at the center of a bizarre backdoor maneuver to provide House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes with top-secret documents on government surveillance. Cohen-Watnick reportedly retrieved the documents from a classified CIA terminal in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building next to the White House and gave them to Nunes, a California Republican who had been a member of Trump’s transition team. They were intended to prove that former President Barack Obama was “wire tapping” Trump during the 2016 campaign. The documents did no such thing, other members of the panel concluded after studying them. What they actually showed is that U.S. intelligence agencies did have Trump’s associates on their radar—but only because they were tracking Russian agents.

The incident triggered a House Ethics Committee probe into Nunes and forced him to recuse himself from his own panel’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 elections. But it also prompted questions from longtime intelligence officials about how Cohen-Watnick, a 30-year-old with apparently only a single, allegedly trouble-filled, junior-level tour of duty with the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) in Afghanistan on his résumé, managed to secure one of the most consequential jobs in the White House: coordinating all of the U.S. intelligence community’s operations with the Oval Office and Congress. In less than a year, Cohen-Watnick had been raised from the equivalent rank of an army captain to a three-star general.

Momentum: New poll shows Dem enthusiasm seen in Georgia and Kansas is a “national phenomenon”

Ever since Donald Trump landed in the White House and Republicans seized full control of the federal government, Democrats have been expressing their outrage, flooding their representatives with phone calls, and staging enormous nationwide protests like the Women’s March and the Tax March.

But one of the most seismic shifts in the wake of Trump’s victory is the backlash against Republicans in elections all over the country.

Republicans nearly lost a House race in Kansas and are locked in a neck-and-neck runoff in Georgia, both traditionally safe GOP districts that never should have been competitive. They failed to flip state legislatures in Delaware and Connecticut after pouring investment into both. They lost a state House race in Pennsylvania to Democrats even though the Republican was the only candidate on the ballot. Meanwhile, Democrats swept elections in conservative, rural towns in Illinois, defeated pro-Trump school board candidates in New Mexico, and just this week flipped a county clerkship in Virginia, despite being outspent 4-1.

Now, a new poll from Public Policy Polling confirms the reason for the recent strength of the Democratic Party — and the results bode very well for Democrats’ prospects in 2018.

First, Democrats have a decisive edge in the generic congressional ballot, 47 to 41. To put that in perspective, simple math suggests that structural factors like gerrymandering and urban packing bias the House in favor of Republicans by about 5 points — and Democrats are leading by 6 points.

But these results are even better for Democrats than they look at first glance, because...

Trump Is the New Insult on Playgrounds
Bizarrely Trump-themed play is popping up in schools for children as young as four years old.

It’s a Trumpian take on the playground game “cops and robbers”: one student plays “Trump,” another is “Pence,” and the rest play “Mexicans” who must escape the threat of deportation by being tagged.

The students are as young as nine years old and this is the playground at a New York City elementary school in predominantly Latino East Harlem.

Once tagged, the “Mexicans” rely on their friends to free them from “detention” (a fenced-in play area) otherwise Trump and Pence win, one parent whose child participated in the game said. This oddly politicized game of tag has some parents wondering how students have incorporated notions of immigration and deportation into otherwise innocent play, and just how much they know—or don’t know—about the new president and his policies.

...“Many children perceive [Trump] as just being really mean,” Maureen Costello, director of the SPLC’s Teaching Tolerance project, told The Daily Beast. “Kids are absorbing that language and reflecting it back.”

At school, Arrow and his friends talk about Trump as best as they can. “Literally all they say is ‘Donald Trump is not nice,’” Blankenship said. “Actually, I think Arrow learned the word ‘asshole’ from a conversation about Trump at school.”
