Two adults dead, two children badly injured, in California elementary school shooting. Update!

Courtesy of ABC 7:

Two adults were killed and two students were critically injured in a shooting at an elementary school in San Bernardino.

The shooting, which San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said was a murder-suicide, happened shortly before 10:30 a.m. inside a classroom at North Park Elementary School in the 5300 block of North H Street.

Burguan said two adults were killed, and two students were hospitalized in critical condition. A female teacher was shot and killed by the suspect, who was visiting her at the time. The gunman then turned the gun, which authorities said was a handgun, on himself.

Police said the children shot were not targeted and were likely struck by accident. The parents of the students who were shot have been notified, according to authorities.

From everything that I have been hearing about this today, it sounds less like a school shooting,  targeting teachers and students, and more like a crime of passion that was unfortunate enough to take place in a school.

It appears that a man came to the school, checked in at the front desk, and then went to the classroom where he killed the teacher and then shot himself, with at least two children also being wounded in the exchange.

I heard one reporter wondering out loud how this person could get into a school with a gun, but of course there is really nothing preventing that.

Most schools in the country do not have metal detectors at their front door, nor should they.

For my job I visit schools all of the time, and in most cases all I am required to do is to check in at the front desk, sign a form saying where I will be in the building, and put on a name tag identifying who I am. And in some cases, when I am just dropping something off real quick for instance, I just get waved right through by the staff at the front desk who know me by sight.

Before this whole ting blows out of proportion it should be stated that there was really very little that could have prevented this.

Not armed teachers. Not police officers working in the building. And certainly not those bullet proof blankets that they tried to sell a couple of years back.

I can think of one thing that very likely WOULD have prevented this shooting, but if  I say it out loud I will just get labeled a "gun grabber" and 2nd Amendment hater.

Update: So now we are learning that one of the children injured in the shooting has died, an 8 year old boy.

It also turns out that the woman killed was a special education teacher, which somehow makes this seem even worse.

Shooter's not a Muslim so then no big deal, right? I mean, this is just the 'Murican Way. It happens in a free society. What are you going to do about it, ban guns? Why that's blasphemy!

Now, if the shooter was a swarthy Muslim, then we've got to go on high alert and start banning more people and surrendering freedoms. Luckily, we don't need to worry about that in this case. Right?

Now that the GOP-led Congress has made it easier for people with mental illness to buy guns legally, this kind of tragedy will happen more often.

And innocent bystanders will be hurt and killed, even in shootings like this one that seems to be a case of domestic violence.

But we MUST preserve the profits of The Almighty Gun Industry, even at the expense of children's lives.

Why does the fact that she was a special education teacher worsen the situation? Is she more dead because of that?

Have you ever been around special needs children? It is even more traumatic to them.

Because children with special needs witnessed the murder of the person who helped them.

Teacher, boy die when husband opens fire in California class

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) A man walked into his estranged wife's elementary school classroom in San Bernardino and opened fire without saying a word, killing her and an 8-year-old student before shooting himself in a murder-suicide that spread panic across a city still recovering emotionally from a terror attack just 15 months ago.

Anderson had a history of weapons, domestic violence and possible drug charges that predated the short marriage, authorities said..........

  10. Just the thought of sending my son to school, and for him to be shot in his classroom, by a crazy man...is horrifying. He is sitting here in front of me playing his new Beyblade tops. How could I tell him no on a day like today, when so much horror happened in my city today? There is a mom just down the road who will never be able to buy her son a toy. My heart breaks for her.

A very interesting take on this situation on Patheos.com. It asks: Why has the shooter's religion NOT been mentioned by the media? After all, they seem to jump all over an action taken by a follower of Islam. And they certainly jump on a violent action performed by an avowed atheist!

It's like you, Gryphen, point out time and again. Why the uneven coverage?
