Trump told visiting Russian officials that James Comey was a "nut job, and firing him had removed "great pressure" on him. Update!

Courtesy of the New York Times:

President Trump told Russian officials in the Oval Office this month that firing the F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, had relieved “great pressure” on him, according to a document summarizing the meeting.

“I just fired the head of the F.B.I. He was crazy, a real nut job,” Mr. Trump said, according to the document, which was read to The New York Times by an American official. “I faced great pressure because of Russia. That’s taken off.”

Mr. Trump added, “I’m not under investigation.”

The conversation, during a May 10 meeting — the day after he fired Mr. Comey — reinforces the notion that Mr. Trump dismissed him primarily because of the bureau’s investigation into possible collusion between his campaign and Russian operatives. Mr. Trump said as much in one televised interview, but the White House has offered changing justifications for the firing.

This information came via an official account of the visit, which was read to the Times by one official and confirmed by another.

After this story broke ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, Elijah Cummings, said that he is demanding to see these documents.

So to be clear the day after he fired James Comey, Trump then invited Russia’s foreign minister, Sergey V. Lavrov, along with Russian ambassador, Sergey I. Kislyak, into the White House, to assure them that he was not under investigation and had just fired the FBI Director who was leading the investigation into his campaign's possible collusion with representatives of their country.

Okay so is THIS the smoking gun?

And if not, why not?

But hey if that's not enough there is also this from the Washington Post:

The law enforcement investigation into possible coordination between Russia and the Trump campaign has identified a current White House official as a significant person of interest, showing that the probe is reaching into the highest levels of government, according to people familiar with the matter.

The senior White House adviser under scrutiny by investigators is someone close to the president, according to these people, who would not further identify the official.

The revelation comes as the investigation also appears to be entering a more overtly active phase, with investigators shifting from work that has remained largely hidden from the public to conducting interviews and using a grand jury to issue subpoenas. The intensity of the probe is expected to accelerate in the coming weeks, the people said.

This story by the way was NOT denied by the White House.

Okay I'm guessing Jared Kushner the son-in-law on this one.

Well I certainly hope that Trump has himself a good ole time on his trip this weekend, because I have a funny feeling that might be his last one for quite some time.

Boy I thought I was looking forward to Comey's testimony before, but now......holy shit!

Update: And now Comey has officially agreed to testify in an open session before the Senate Intelligence Committee.

And the hits just keep on coming.

The White House Is Weighing A Plan To Weaken The Special Prosecutor's Investigation Into Trump's Russia Scandal

...according to administration officials who spoke to Reuters anonymously.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Trump administration is exploring whether it can use an obscure ethics rule to undermine the special counsel investigation into ties between President Donald Trump's campaign team and Russia, two people familiar with White House thinking said on Friday.

Within hours of Mueller's appointment on Wednesday, the White House began reviewing the Code of Federal Regulations, which restricts newly hired government lawyers from investigating their prior law firm’s clients for one year after their hiring, the sources said.
An executive order signed by Trump in January extended that period to two years.

Mueller's former law firm, WilmerHale, represents Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, who met with a Russian bank executive in December, and the president's former campaign manager Paul Manafort, who is a subject of a federal investigation.

Legal experts said the ethics rule can be waived by the Justice Department, which appointed Mueller. He did not represent Kushner or Manafort directly at his former law firm.

If the department did not grant a waiver, Mueller would be barred from investigating Kushner or Manafort, and this could greatly diminish the scope of the probe, experts said.

.... But the administration is now mainly focused on placing a cloud over his reputation for independence, according to the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

..... “If you just parse the words that Donald Trump says, it does seem very close to a confession of obstruction of justice,” Toobin said, according to Mediaite.com. “He is talking about James Comey, who was investigating him and his campaign in connection with the whole Russia campaign matter, and he says ‘I fired him and the pressure’s off.’ It doesn’t seem much more complicated than that.”

CNN political analysts Pamela Brown and Gloria Borger revealed the explosive information on “Anderson Cooper: 360” on Friday night.

..."I just fired the head of the FBI. He was crazy, a real nut job," Trump told them (Russians)...

That statement would constitute the most direct admission by Trump that he had fired Comey in an attempt to impact the investigation....

The White House initially said Trump fired Comey because of a recommendation by Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general.

Trump later told NBC News that he would have fired Comey regardless of Rosenstein's recommendation and that he had the "Russia thing" on his mind when he made the decision

Well that didn’t take long, however I expected them to say Mueller was bias because he worked with Comey.

Little donnie should have paid more attention in history class when they taught the Nixon white house years because this is going to back fire bigly.
    ===========================
The White House may be looking at ways to undermine the special counsel investigation into the Trump campaign’s alleged ties with the White House, Reuters reported Friday.

According to anonymous sources close to the White House, the administration has begun reviewing an obscure ethics rule in the Code of Federal Regulations, which could prevent Robert Mueller, the newly appointed special counsel, from investigating anyone who was a client of his law firm — which includes President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and former campaign manager Paul Manafort.

The rule restricts newly appointed government officials from investigating clients of prior employers. Mueller's former law firm, WilmerHale, represents Kushner — who has been in the spotlight over the president’s decision to fire James Comey from the FBI and for meeting with Russian officials — and Manafort, who is currently under federal investigation.

If the White House couldn’t get Mueller removed, they’d use the rule to cast doubt on his impartiality, according to Reuters: “Under this strategy, the sources said the administration would raise the issue in press conferences and public statements,” Julia Edwards Ainsley reported. “Moreover, the White House has not ruled out the possibility of using the rule to challenge Mueller’s findings in court, should the investigation lead to prosecution.” .......

Tips for Leaders Meeting Trump: Keep It Short and Give Him a Win

After four months of interactions between Mr. Trump and his counterparts, foreign officials and their Washington consultants say certain rules have emerged:

Keep it short — no 30-minute monologue for a 30-second attention span. Do not assume he knows the history of the country or its major points of contention. Compliment him on his Electoral College victory. Contrast him favorably with President Barack Obama. Do not get hung up on whatever was said during the campaign. Stay in regular touch. Do not go in with a shopping list but bring some sort of deal he can call a victory.

Report: White House Lawyers Looking Into Impeachment

White House lawyers started researching impeachment procedures this week in order to defend President Trump from potential efforts to remove him from office, reports CNN, citing "people briefed on the discussions." The unnamed sources say White House lawyers have consulted experts on impeachment. That being said, White House officials say impeachment is an extremely unlikely possibility, as Trump still has the support of Republicans in Congress. CNN notes that Democratic lawmakers have also been hesitant on the possibility of impeachment.
