As predicted Donald Trump pulls out of the Paris accord. Today was the day that America stopped being a leader in fighting climate change.

Courtesy of NBC News:

The United States will pull out of a landmark global coalition meant to curb emissions that cause climate change, President Donald Trump announced Thursday.

"The United States will withdraw from the Paris climate accord," Trump said to applause from the crowd gathered in the White House Rose Garden.

He added that the U.S. will begin negotiations to re-enter either the Paris accord or a new treaty on terms that are better for American businesses and taxpayers.

"So we're getting out, but we will start to negotiate and we will see if we can make a deal that's fair," he said.

Yeah that suggestion that Trump is going to try to get us a better deal is all bullshit.

Trump has no intention of working that hard unless he gets something from it personally.

Dana Bash, reporter from CNN, suggested that the speech sounded like Mad-Libs for conservatives:

JAKE TAPPER (HOST): And Dana, I know a line that the president said that struck a lot of us was when he cast the Paris agreement as quote, "a massive redistribution of United States wealth to other countries."

DANA BASH: Right, because the whole theme against President Obama during both of the elections against him was that he was a Democrat who wants to redistribute wealth. That is a buzz word, a signal to conservatives that we got your back and we're going to make sure that sort of the big bad Democrats who want to socialize and globalize and do everything that would hurt you and your jobs won't happen.

And there were a series of those buzz words, it was almost like mad libs for conservatives, this speech, and it was a long one. The thing -- one of the things that struck me is after all of the reporting that we've done about the discussions, and the debates, and the pressure that he got from his daughter, from his -- Ivanka, from his son-in-law Jared, from his Secretary of State Rex Tillerson -- there wasn't an olive branch in here.

It's like those people were walled-off in the writing of this speech, and it was clearly written by the Steve Bannon and Stephen Millers of the world.

And that's really it in a nutshell.

This speech is clear indication that Stephen Bannon is back in the driver's seat and that Trump is dancing to the tune that he is playing.

Reactions to this speech have been rather vocal to say the least.

Here is the obligatory response from Al Gore.
The Secretary-General of the UN was also quite unhappy:

The decision by the United States to withdraw from the Paris Agreement on climate change is a major disappointment for global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote global security.

California Rep. Speier claims that Trump has now made himself irrelevant.

Former President Obama had this to say:

"The nations that remain in the Paris Agreement will be the nations that reap the benefits in jobs and industries created," Obama said. "I believe the United States of America should be at the front of the pack."

He added: "But even in the absence of American leadership; even as this administration joins a small handful of nations that reject the future; I'm confident that our states, cities, and businesses will step up and do even more to lead the way, and help protect for future generations the one planet we've got."

Even the Weather Channel could not contain their disappointment:

The headlines on the homepage include:

So What Happens to Earth Now?
Still Don't Care? Proof You Should
...and More Proof...
...and Even More Proof...
...Or the Imminent Collapse of a Key Ice Shelf...
...Or Antarctica Turning Green
...Or California's Coast Disappearing Into the Sea

Here's how the Huffington Post responded.

And as promised Elon Musk has removed himself from Trump's economic council.

Of course Trump also had his supporters for this decision.

Of course most of them believe that there is no definitive proof the earth is round, think dinosaurs and humans lived at the same time, and believe Donald Trump is really worth 10 billion dollars.

It will be the leader of Syria and Nicaragua, the only two countries who did not sign the agreement!

Besides that, this idiotic thing just to spite President Obama will have repercussions for our near as well as long-term future. The rest of the world will NOT TRUST us anymore, because they will think/know that even IF we get a different president who will try to undo this damage, we, the citizens of the US cannot be trusted to elect future SANE presidents.
It took President Obama quite a few years to undo the damage from gwb (sic), and he had to fight very, very hard.

Nicaragua didn't sign agreement because 1) it didn't go far enough (i.e., 2 degrees, not 4) and 2) the large countries would not be held accountable, so even if Trump had signed, he would have done nothing to see it implemented.

Disney CEO becomes second exec to bail on Trump

Disney CEO Bob Iger has also chosen to cut ties with the White House Advisory Council — making him the second chief executive to bail on President Trump after he decided to back out of the Paris climate agreement.

“As a matter of principle, I’ve resigned from the President’s Council over the #ParisAgreement withdrawal,” Iger tweeted Thursday night, just hours after Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk revealed that he would be stepping down as a result of Trump’s announcement.

Their resignations came after countless people blasted the president for pulling the US out of the global pact. Much of the criticism came from corporate America, and CEOs from several major companies....

I,personally, have had it with the media referring to these ACCORDS and TRADE AGREEMENTS and PACTS as DEALS. They aren’t fucking deals. They are formal, legal documents and agreements that have the full force of domestic or international law behind them. They aren’t some scheme dreamed up in 15 minutes by some D grade Hollywood celebrity on a reality show. Thousands of researchers, policy makers, lawyers, health care workers, social workers, climatologists, scientists, and experts in thousands of different sectors have worked out the details over years and decades. THEY ARE NOT FUCKING DEALS.

The leaders of the other nations involved are telling DT to go pound sand.

    Several thoughts.

The progressive states along with forward-looking companies will ignore Trump and get on with addressing global warming and pursuing green energy, as will the rest of the federal government.

For example, the Norfolk-Hampton Roads region of Virginia is home to the Navy. The area is subject to flooding because of sea level rise and land subsidence. The Navy is spending hundreds of millions on moving buildings, installing sea walls, and the like. They will not stop.

WalMart has embarked on converting their stores to green energy. Given the savings, they will not stop.

Solar and wind power created more jobs in the US last year than exist in coal mining. The trend will not turn around.

The rest of the world will move right along, ignoring Trump. Meanwhile, China will continue to produce reliable solar and wind power devices and sell them to us, thereby worsening our balance of payments.

Trump simply will be ignored by the people and the organizations that matter.

The blue states will move right along into the future while the red states with their knuckle-dragging bubbas will continue to suck hind tit.

The US military is very concerned about climate change and not just because of naval installations. Fifty to seventy years in the future if nothing is done, there will be major populations shifts globally as parts of the world become more and more inhabitable and inhospitable to agriculture. This is part of the reasoning of the US military in wanting the world to do whatever is possible to slow the process.

Trump just walked away from the table. No longer will the USA be sitting at the top of that table, not for any matter at all. Not just abdicating the climate matter, but all matters. He has just withdrawn. After his disgusting and embarrassing behavior with our long term allies on that trip, he will have a hard time demanding anything of them in the future.

Until he is gone, our country will be second or third tier in the hierarchy of important countries in the world. the only place we are still going to be near the top is based on the size of our economy. but, by dropping concern for the planet and the people who live on it, we have lost any right to bargain with the rest of the world on any matter -- well except for Syria and Nicaragua, that is. And, haven't we just been bombing Syria? Maybe it is just going to be Nicaragua who will agree to deal with us.

Nicaragua didn't sign the Paris Accords because they felt it didn't go far enough, wasn't tough enough. Their leaders now have a petition headed their way from a number of citizens, imploring them to sign it, so they don't have to be in company with Trump's United States.

And Syria wasn't allowed to sign, because of the civil unrest & Assad's murderous acts against his own citizens; he wasn't seen as the legitimate leader of the country.

So, really, we pretty much stand alone here. Mortified in the eyes of the world.

When Donald Trump announced his intention today to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Accord, which he intended as a defiant slap in the face of pretty much everyone on earth, he left out a few key words: “…if I get reelected.” Because as it turns out, he can’t get the U.S. out of the Paris Agreement until 2021, and by that time someone else may be President instead.

That’s the buried lede in an otherwise run of the mill report tonight from the New York Times (link), which waits all the way until the fourteenth paragraph to reveal the day’s biggest news: “But [Trump] will stick to the withdrawal process laid out in the Paris agreement, which President Barack Obama joined and most of the world has already ratified. That could take nearly four years to complete, meaning a final decision would be up to the American voters in the next presidential election.”

And so while Donald Trump signaled today that he really wants to kill the planet by pulling out of the Paris Accord, it turns out his defiant gesture today was mostly bravado and wishful thinking. For the next four years, the United States will technically remain part of the Accord. The only way Trump could possibly remove the U.S. from the Accord is if he gets reelected and then does it early in his second term.

Donald Trump was “bewildered” after French President Emmanuel Macron put him in his place

...The report goes on to suggest that Trump made his decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord at least partially based on the handshake in question. So not only has Trump reached a point of psychosis where he’s making a decision that harms all Americans based on a mere handshake he didn’t like, he’s also too mentally vacant to grasp that the Paris Climate Accord didn’t really have anything to do with France. There is a psychologically incompetent and outright psychotic individual occupying the White House, and even his own staff is now publicly acknowledging it. The Republicans in Congress are derelict in their duties by refusing to impeach and remove him.

How the Trump administration’s secret efforts to ease Russia sanctions fell short

In the early weeks of the Trump administration, former Obama administration officials and State Department staffers fought an intense, behind-the-scenes battle to head off efforts by incoming officials to normalize relations with Russia, according to multiple sources familiar with the events.

Unknown to the public at the time, top Trump administration officials, almost as soon as they took office, tasked State Department staffers with developing proposals for the lifting of economic sanctions, the return of diplomatic compounds and other steps to relieve tensions with Moscow.

These efforts to relax or remove punitive measures imposed by President Obama in retaliation for Russia’s intervention in Ukraine and meddling in the 2016 election alarmed some State Department officials, who immediately began lobbying congressional leaders to quickly pass legislation to block the move, the sources said.

“There was serious consideration by the White House to unilaterally rescind the sanctions,” said Dan Fried, a veteran State Department official who served as chief U.S. coordinator for sanctions policy until he retired in late February. He said in the first few weeks of the administration, he received several “panicky” calls from U.S. government officials who told him they had been directed to develop a sanctions-lifting package and imploring him, “Please, my God, can’t you stop this?”

Fried said he grew so concerned that he contacted Capitol Hill allies — including Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md., the ranking minority member on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee — to urge them to move quickly to pass legislation that would “codify” the sanctions in place, making it difficult for President Trump to remove them.

68 mayors adopt Paris climate accord after U.S. pulls out

“The world cannot wait—and neither will we”

    https://www.curbed.com/2017/6/1/15726376/paris-accord-climate-change-mayors-trump

Trump just betrayed the world. Now the world will fight back.

...President Trump has made a colossal mistake in deciding to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement. There is simply no case for withdrawal, other than a desire to double down on an ill-informed campaign promise, while the case for staying in is overwhelming. But damaging as it is, this decision is not the beginning of the end for efforts to contain climate change. The world decided in Paris to confront the climate threat, and it is not turning back.

Around the world, climate change is a metastasizing danger, for some countries even an existential threat. It was understood in the years leading up to the Paris negotiation that the climate challenge could be met only with a new kind of agreement premised on concerted effort by all. That agreement — ambitious, universal, transparent, balanced — was reached in Paris, with the help of U.S. leadership every step of the way.

"Gary Cohn, director of the White House National Economic Council, told reporters aboard Air Force One Thursday night that coal “doesn’t make sense anymore,” as he talked up other energy sources.

“Coal doesn’t even make that much sense anymore as a feedstock,” he said, CNN Money reported. Feedstock refers to what’s used to produce energy. Cohn called natural gas a “such a cleaner fuel,” and pointed out that America has become an “abundant producer” of the fossil fuel.

He also praised renewable energy. “If you think about how solar and how much wind power we’ve created in the United States, we can be a manufacturing powerhouse and still be environmentally friendly,” Cohn said."

Tillerson didn't want to leave the Paris accord either.

But Tillerson was sure present when the Exon deal was made with the Saudis during Trump's visit there. Tillerson is trying to cozy up to the other side now. Don't trust him for a minute. If fossil fuels can profit, he'll be right there.

From his statements, I seriously doubt little donnie has read the Paris Agreement, He said he is going to negotiate for a better deal, his usual clueless statement, that he throws out there every time he hears the word treaty or agreement. There are no negotiations with this agreement, it is voluntary.

I would also bet not only did he want to get out of it because of Obama, but he saw the word “Paris” and decided to get back at the president of France !!!

So “protecting” the American people, ie a few thousand coal miners, who are too lazy to learn some new job skills, little donnie is willing to kill a few million because he hates Mother Nature.

I am happy to see that a few governors and mayors have given little donnie the big F.U. and are going to continue to restrict carbon emissions.

And I don't think that anyone has ever attempted to explain it to him. Since he's all knowing, he would have brushed the explanation off. What an evil, traitorous weasel we now have in the White House, surrounding by petulant little weasels.

" Guilfoyle also revealed that she had reassured Trump about his decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement - several hours in advance of his official announcement."

Trump is perfectly willing to punish the majority of voting Americans. Remember more of us voted against him than voted for him. Trump's action yesterday, masking as it does his infamous "gifting" of spy sites back to Putin, is simply diabolical. Hopefully, most states and municipalities will decide to participate even more fully in the agreement. WE MUST VOTE THE TRAITOROUS GOP OUT OF EVERY LEVEL OF GOVERNMENT in order to save out children's lives.
