Courtesy of the New York Times:
The editor of The New York Times editorial page testified on Wednesday that he did not intend in an editorial to blame the former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin for a 2011 mass shooting, but was instead trying to make a point about the heated political environment. The editorial is the focus of a defamation lawsuit brought by Ms. Palin against the news organization.
The editor, James Bennet, said he had wanted to draw a link between charged political rhetoric and an atmosphere of political incitement after a gunman opened fired in June on a baseball field where Republican congressmen were practicing, injuring several people including Representative Steve Scalise of Louisiana. But Mr. Bennet said he was not trying to make a direct connection between a map of targeted electoral districts that Ms. Palin’s political action committee had circulated and the 2011 shooting in Arizona by Jared Loughner that severely injured Representative Gabby Giffords.
“I did not intend and was not thinking of it as a causal link to the crime,” Mr. Bennet said. During cross-examination, he said he did not know if Mr. Loughner had seen the map and “did not know if the map incited him to his conduct.”
I think that what Mr. Bennet wrote is a valid observation on the effects that violent rhetoric has on the behaviors of certain individuals.
We just saw that same thing take place in Charlottesville, where people reading White Supremacist postings online showed up ready to incite violence and kick ass.
We have seen this happen time and time again, what SarahPAC did with that map is nothing new, but it DID help to create an atmosphere of hostility that could be tapped into by people with certain violent tendencies.
The judge is still considering the idea of throwing this whole thing out, and if he does I really hope the Times counter sues Palin for everything she still has left.

What I've said from the start. She took great delight in amping up the hatred, but she didn't pull the trigger so "who ME?" victimhood. Words (and gun sights) have consequences, whether she meant to or not (yeah, right).
ReplyDeleteHow many times have TAWD and she threatened to sue and never did? Because it was truth what was said, pardon the bad sentence structure, but this is the gray lady NYT!
For graduating with a journalism degree (HAH), she doesn't seem to understand op-ed pieces. I hope it's thrown out, and it should be, so the likes of c4p can scream, "we was robbed!"

Great article about how Palin begat Trump. Palin people are Trump people. They all have to be crushed. She makes me sick, but I have watched and opposed her since 2008. We have to drive Trump into nonentity irrelevance too.

DeleteI welcome the ACLU's announcement. Several years ago they came to the defense of the crazy pastor (?) from Florida who made a special trip to Dearborn MI to sit in his car in front of a mosque and frighten American citizens who happen to be Moslems. He had come armed from Florida and had made sure that he would have plenty of press coverage. When the Dearborn authorities made him move, the ACLU came to his defense. They lost my support in that moment. I still believe that freedom of religion trumps an armed protest by an outsider any time.
DeleteWhat made this man's sudden appearance in Dearborn especially distasteful was that it was done on Good Friday, as members of various Christian religions were going to their places of worship that share space along the same main street. These places of worship - Catholic, Protestant, Moslem and Jewish - have shared the street peaceably for many decades until the armed Florida intruder arrived.

Mother Of Charlottesville Victim Receiving Death Threats As Trump Emboldens White Supremacists
ReplyDeleteThe mother of Heather Heyer, the woman killed in Saturday’s racially motivated terrorist attack in Charlottesville, Virginia, is now receiving threats on her own life.
In an interview with NBC News, Heyer’s mother, Susan Bro, said she is receiving death threats not long after having to bury her 32-year-old daughter.
Bro lays at least some of the blame on Trump, who she says has given cover to the “marginalized” groups of people that participated in the white supremacist rallies over the weekend.
“I think the president has found a niche in voters of the people who feel marginalized and I think he has continued to nurture those marginalized voters,” she said, according to NBC News. “I’ve had death threats already … because of what I’m doing right this second.”
“Despite the threats,” NBC News added, “Bro said she refuses to live in fear and has vowed to continue to carry on her daughter’s legacy by establishing a foundation in her name.”
Since the attack, she has spoken out loudly against the hatred put on display in Charlottesville and criticized Trump’s despicable response to the racially motivated violence that led to her daughter’s death – but she refuses to be silenced.
“They tried to kill my child to shut her up,” she said after the attack. “But guess what? You just magnified her.”

In a hilarious interview with CNN’s Don Lemon Tuesday, Columbia University linguistics professor John McWhorter had a lot to say about President Donald Trump’s speaking style.
ReplyDeleteWhile Trump might claim to have “all the best words,” McWhorter had another take.
“What we’re dealing with is something we’ve talked about before,” McWhorter began. “The way to understand the man is to the understand him as a gum-popping 12-year-old. Not even 14. Twelve. that’s how much context he has. He understands racism is bad. A 12-year-old understands that, but he also doesn’t like this thing he’s calling the alt-left because they don’t like him. So, when he thinks about the people that are really egregious, he thinks ‘Well, people who are racist and want to hurt people, of course that’s not good,’ just like I shouldn’t punch one of my friends. But on the other hand he doesn’t like the left because they don’t like him and he finds them shrill. So, it has to be both sides.”
He went on to say that people expect him as an expert on linguistics to confirm that Trump is a racist and is “dog whistling” to the Nazis and white supremacists, but he refuses to think Trump is smart enough. He thinks that Trump is honestly only mean to them because he feels like they are mean to him.
“I think that it gives him more credit as a thinking being than is necessary,” he said.
He harkined back to Steve Bannon, who has likely “told him to watch out,” so Trump thinks it is his job not to step on “those people.”
Lemon wondered how there could be such a history with the birtherism and the Central Park Five case, but McWhorter said that the Trump is far too “ordinary” for that to be the case. Realistically, he has “reconstructed primitive views and he doesn’t even bother to hide.”
“I think what this is all about is he doesn’t like the idea that some people keep dwelling on the past,” he continued. “Once again, that bar stool, unsophisticated person. Let the past go. He doesn’t understand how the past extends into the present. He doesn’t understand what an unpleasant symbol might mean because he is not a victim to one of them, being of the ethnicity that he is. And so for him, he sees that statues are pretty. And I suppose in the aesthetic sense you could say that they are. He doesn’t understand that they stand for people who fought to keep black people in chains. Now, for him, of course that means let’s not go back the past. But for most of us, it means a great deal more and for him, he simply doesn’t understand significance.”
For Trump, McWhorter said that he sees it as something that will just keep going and going. The language he’s using is something that sounds like something someone would say over a beer. “When does it stop?” McWhorter called it an “ordinary thing.”
“Of course, Trump doesn’t understand there’s a such thing as a moral trajectory that a nation makes and that this one, despite people who pretend it doesn’t happen, has made quite a moral trajectory in many ways.” McWhorter continued. “And yet, he’s president. He is the most morally backwards president, in that sense, since Andrew Johnson, in terms of who’s in the White House and who understands where the country needs to go or at least knows to pretend. So, OK, Lyndon Johnson was not Mr. Racial Sensitivity, but especially when the chips came down, he at least pretended and evolved. Trump’s knuckles are dragging on the peanut shells of the floor of the tavern.”

Cantwell recently got his 15 minutes of fame when he was seen in a viral video crying about being arrested by police after the Charlottesville attack. Once OkCupid was alerted that Cantwell was a member on the dating website, the company worked quickly to show that white supremacist values would not be tolerated. In response, “white supremacist Chris Cantwell” has been banned from OkCupid – for life!

"A profile belonging to white nationalist leader Christopher Cantwell, most recently featured in a Vice News documentary about the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, last weekend, was discovered on the dating site. After OkCupid’s support team was alerted, it immediately banned him.
“We were alerted by another dater on OkCupid who had been contacted by Cantwell recently,” Melissa Hobley, a spokeswoman for the site, told HuffPost. “We wasted no time ― we quickly verified that it was indeed him and shut down his account.”
The site also tweeted that it “banned him for life” on Thursday afternoon, and that it has “no room for hate in a place where you’re looking for love.”"
Like any sane woman would want to date this piece of shit.
Why am I not surprised that all of these Nazis are single, horny and can't get a woman to date them? Gee, was it something they said? Or maybe all of the swastika tattoos are just a turn off.
So much for The Daily Stormer telling them that they'll have all these blonde bombshells falling over themselves to fuck them. That's not gonna happen.

"And so, I take it upon myself to make it very clear that women do not want to fuck the neckbearded neo-Nazi who fancies himself an edgy anti-hero whose only hobby is the internet. We see you, and we are disgusted by you. We are laughing at you."
"The community will come together to shame you: your bosses, your colleagues, the girl you’ve had a crush on since middle school who seems to ignore nice boys like you. She doesn’t ignore you because you’re “nice.” She ignores you because you’re a racist piece of shit who hasn’t showered in four days."
I wonder if The Daily Stormer has a personals section?
Christopher Cantwell would have a lot better luck if he were gay.
Um, no, gay guys as not as desperate. Never were. And why would anyone assume a Neo Nazi has a boss or co-workers? A grandma and a disability check is more likely.

While they might be able to sponge off Paypal individually, Paypal has just cut off the group accounts.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/paypal-charlottesville-hate-groups_us_59949563e4b0acc593e4ac94?section=us_politics
"PayPal says it will cut off its services to hate groups and other users collecting donations to promote violence and racial intolerance in the wake of Saturday’s deadly clashes at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.
The online payment platform condemned extremist groups ― including neo-Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan ― in a blog post Tuesday and vowed to crack down on their use of the company’s services.
“The events in Charlottesville are yet another disturbing example of the many forms that racism and hatred manifest,” Franz Paasche, PayPal’s senior vice president of corporate affairs and communications, wrote in the blog post.
“PayPal will – as we consistently have in the past – limit or end customer relationships and prohibit the use of our services by those that meet the thresholds of violating our policy,” he continued."
I can believe that it was the writer's intention to address the charged political atmosphere rather than to accuse Sarah Palin personally of causing shootings, but it was perhaps done in a heavy-handed manner.
ReplyDeleteOf course, the NYT writer did not then know of Sarah Palin's thin skin. (He probably has never visited the websites that have followed Palin so closely since she was foisted on the American public in 2008.) Given how nasty Palin's rhetoric and her (mostly) ghost-written screeds can be, an outsider would assume that she has a pretty thick skin.
But, alas, in many ways, Sarah Palin is much like Trump: all that vitriol hiding behind a wall of attorneys ready to sue at a moment's notice. Of course, no actual damage was done to Palin's reputation and she never worried that it was. But the lawsuit got her in the headlines again - as a victim, her favorite pose.

ReplyDeleteWell, someone has to do it.
DeleteThe high schools aren't.
Use to be when you graduated from high school you had some sort of skill that could get you a job. I could type 55 words a minute when I graduated. I could have gone into secretarial work but I went to college. (And worked summers as a temp secretary.)
There were all sorts of classes that gave you job skills for life after graduation even if you didn't go to college.
Not any more.
Now you either have to go to some sort of technical school or college to become a plumber or an accountant.
Unless you want to be a cashier or a salesman you need further education. And even in those jobs they have to train you somewhat.
If colleges, especially community colleges, started offering skills classes in pipe fitting, welding, auto mechanics, food service they would better provide for the needs of their students. They already offer accounting, secretarial and other white collar training.
Not everyone is cut out for or even wants to be a lawyer or a doctor.
Mlaiuppa the cc colleges here in MA have an incredibly vast array of programs beyond white collar jobs. I hope this link works - I was pretty impressed.
