So it turns out that another Trump campaign worker tried super hard to arrange another one of those pesky meetings with the Russians. This one included Vladimir Putin.

Remember, all Russia meetings have to go through me.
Courtesy of the Washington Post:

Three days after Donald Trump named his campaign foreign policy team in March 2016, the youngest of the new advisers sent an email to seven campaign officials with the subject line: “Meeting with Russian Leadership - Including Putin.”

The adviser, George Papadopoulos, offered to set up “a meeting between us and the Russian leadership to discuss US-Russia ties under President Trump,” telling them his Russian contacts welcomed the opportunity, according to internal campaign emails read to The Washington Post.

The proposal sent a ripple of concern through campaign headquarters in Trump Tower. Campaign co-chairman Sam Clovis wrote that he thought NATO allies should be consulted before any plans were made. Another Trump adviser, retired Navy Rear Adm. Charles Kubic, cited legal concerns, including a possible violation of U.S. sanctions against Russia and of the Logan Act, which prohibits U.S. citizens from unauthorized negotiation with foreign governments.

But Papadopoulos, a campaign volunteer with scant foreign policy experience, persisted. Between March and September, the self-described energy consultant sent at least a half-dozen requests for Trump, as he turned from primary candidate to party nominee, or for members of his team to meet with Russian officials. Among those to express concern about the effort was then-campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who rejected in May 2016 a proposal from Papadopoulos for Trump to do so.

Not at all surprising that Manafort was the one who put the kibosh on this meeting since clearly this Papadopoulos fellow was acting as if everybody knew that Trump was Putin's little bitch and was not keeping all of this Russia meeting stuff on the DL.

According to the Post these exchanges were found among 20,000 emails that were turned over to the congressional committees investigating Trump's connections with Russia.

So clearly it appears that Jeff Sessions has not stopped any of the leaks, and it also appears that neither a White Supremacist riot nor a potential war with North Korea is going to distract the media from what will likely be the biggest story of the decade.

That's certainly good to know.

Trump Shares, Then Deletes, Twitter Post of Train Hitting Cartoon Person Covered by CNN Logo

WASHINGTON — President Trump shared on Twitter a cartoon on Tuesday morning of a train running over a person with a CNN logo covering the person’s head, three days after a fatal collision in Charlottesville, Va. Mr. Trump deleted his retweet minutes later.

Mr. Trump has been under fire for how he has publicly addressed bloody demonstrations by white nationalists over the weekend. Promoting a cartoon of a person being run over by a train appeared to belittle the attack by a driver who ran into a crowd of counterprotesters, leaving a 32-year-old woman dead on Saturday and 19 others injured. An Ohio man has been charged with second-degree murder in the crash.

In news cycles dominated by special investigations and bipartisan suspicion, it’s nice to pause occasionally to appreciate when someone does the right thing — especially if that person is President Trump. What can bring some comfort is to have the sacrifice acknowledged from the nation’s highest office. Donald Trump delivered the keynote address to the bereaved friends, families and colleagues of the fallen police officers ... Although a president obviously needs downtime and can’t accept every invitation, the annual service that honors the deaths of police officers is one that should be prioritized. Trump not only showed up for the police the first time they asked, but he brought Cabinet officials Jeff Sessions, Alexander Acosta, Elaine Chao, and John Kelly along with him. He also made history by being the first president to attend the event with his vice president. https://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2017/05/24/trumps_rhapsody_in_blue_a_smart_tribute_to_fallen_officers_133988.html

Trooper-Pilot Berke M.M. Bates is survived by his wife, Amanda, and his 11-year old twins, a son and daughter.

Lieutenant Cullen had served with the Virginia State Police for 23 years and was assigned as the commander of the Aviation Unit. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

New campaign emails make it harder for Trump to deny Russia meddled in the election

...From March to October, aide George Papadopoulos presented some seven requests from people who claimed to be tied to the Russian government who wanted to meet with Trump and his team, report The Washington Post’s Tom Hamburger, Carol D. Leonnig and Rosalind S. Helderman, who obtained emails from the Trump campaign during that time.

One of the most eyebrow-raising subject lines from Papadopoulos: “Meeting with Russian Leadership — Including Putin.”

There’s no evidence Trump’s campaign took Papadopoulos up on the invitations to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin; in fact, emails show senior campaign officials thought it could be a bad idea.

But news that Russia was trying at all completely unravels President Trump’s claim that Russia wasn’t trying to meddle in the election, or that the investigations into whether the Trump campaign helped are “fake news.” The Russians were meddling in the election, and it appears the Trump campaign was aware they were seeking its help to do it. Which raises the question of why Trump aides met with anyone tied to the Russian government at all during the campaign.

There can be only one reason for Russia’s attempts to reach out to Trump’s campaign, former intelligence officials have said: The Russians wanted to infiltrate it. The intelligence community has determined the Russians wanted Hillary Clinton lose, Donald Trump to win, and to undermine Americans’ confidence in their democracy in the process.

White supremacists say they are just warming up.

Already, white supremacist groups have promised more rallies in more cities and have begun raising money to pay for the legal defense costs associated with charges that might come out of the Charlottesville violence.

...After Trump's victory, Andrew Anglin, who runs the neo-Nazi website Daily Stormer, posted this reaction on Nov. 9, 2016: “Our Glorious Leader has ascended to God Emperor,” Anglin wrote. “Make no mistake about it: we did this. If it were not for us, it wouldn’t have been possible.”

...In the first month following Trump’s election, hate crimes and incidents of bias-related harassment and intimidation skyrocketed, the SPLC reported.

    Of 1,094 incidents reported from Nov. 9 to December 12, 315 were anti-immigrant in nature, 221 were anti-black, 112 were anti-Muslim and 109 were anti-LGBT.

According to the SPLC, “more than a third of the incidents directly referenced either Trump, his ‘Make America Great Again’ slogan, or his infamous remarks about grabbing women by the genitals.”

When an alleged white supremacist rammed a car into a crowd of people Saturday in Charlottesville, Virginia, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and members of Congress from both parties were quick to call it an act of terrorism. But U.S. law enforcement officials, who enjoy sweeping powers to investigate and prosecute suspected foreign terrorists on U.S. soil, face obstacles to charging the man, James Alex Fields Jr., as a terrorist. The Justice Department's civil rights division is currently focused on whether Fields committed a hate crime. Beyond Fields's case is the urgent question of how law enforcement can prevent further violence at a time when radical white supremacist groups appear emboldened. U.S. officials are severely limited in their ability to crack down on domestic extremist groups—even those who spew hate-filled rhetoric, acquire arms and advocate violence. http://www.politico.com/story/2017/08/15/us-hate-groups-legal-protections-241653

Trump Resistance Escalates After Charlottesville With New Campaign to Stop White House Agenda

A leading resistance movement against President Donald Trump plans to build on momentum from ongoing protests against white nationalist violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, by targeting members of Congress over the next few weeks in an effort to stall the Republican agenda in Washington.

Protesters took to the streets in recent days in states from California to Georgia in reaction to a “Unite the Right” rally on Saturday that led to the death of Heather Heyer after a car drove into a crowd of counter-protesters. In all, more than 600 events against white nationalism have been held so far this week across the country, according to MoveOn,

“These events were a reminder that there are countless Americans ready to show up when it comes to fighting to make our country a more just and equitable one for all of us,” read an email to MoveOn members Monday.

Activists' next steps is to call out members of Congress who have returned to their home districts during Washington's summer recess. MoveOn is calling for the ramping up of “town halls, rallies and office visits” in the coming weeks.

“Let's use this recess to keep hammering home the messages we need Congress to hear: Together, we need to let our lawmakers know that they must stop Trump from taking us to war with his dangerous rhetoric,” the message to members this week said. “Health care is a fundamental right, and we'll continue to hold accountable those members of Congress who voted to take it away from millions of Americans.

“We will let them know that any tax cuts for the 1 percent are unacceptable. And we will demand that every lawmaker speak out forcefully against white supremacists and the so-called "alt-right" movement as we also fight for the rights of immigrants, Muslims, people of color, and all the communities targeted by the hate we saw on display in Virginia,” the message continued.

In refusing to lead, Trump has united an impressive coalition of Americans against him. Increasingly unpopular, he is sealed in a bunker with Bannon and his acolyte, Sebastian Gorka, the laughably self-important Hungarian fanatic with alleged Nazi ties. The president’s voice is frequently channeled by Stephen Miller, a sclerotic nationalist who embarrasses the White House and the notion of public service. In thrall to these hateful pseudo-men, Trump lashes out at those who expect more from him, who continue to hope against hope that he can transcend his own worst impulses and demonstrate, if only for a moment, that he belongs in the Oval Office.
