Tina Fey represented all of us on last night's Weekend Update. #sheetcake.

Courtesy of WaPo:

Tina Fey is fuming about last weekend’s violence in Charlottesville, home to her alma mater, the University of Virginia.

In response, the former “Saturday Night Live” comedian and writer is spearheading a movement: “sheetcaking.”

In a surprise appearance on SNL’s “Weekend Update: Summer Edition” Thursday night, Fey urged Americans not to get into screaming matches with neo-Nazis. Instead, she said, “order a cake with the American flag on it … and just eat it.”

She proceeded to stuff her face with sheet cake as she bashed white supremacists, President Trump, House Speaker Paul D. Ryan and conservative pundit Ann Coulter (“yard-sale Barbie”).

With her mouth full of frosting, she seemed to capture the frustration of many Americans in the past week. Almost immediately, the hashtags “#sheetcakemovement” and “#sheetcaking” began circulating on social media.

I had a couple of thoughts while watching this genius at work last night.

First, why doesn't this woman have her own show right now?

Second, I totally feel everything that she was expressing. Totally.

And third, is that not the moistest cake you have ever seen?

I don't even usually like cake, and she was eating it like a rabid wolverine, and yet I still wanted some of it. Really bad.

So thank you Tina Fey for channeling all of our emotions to eloquently.

And thank you for the extra three pounds I am definitely going to gain when I sit down to eat my own entire sheetcake.

There are those who are lamenting Tina Fey's advice to avoid mixing with the alt-righties/neo-Nazis/white supremacists when they strut through the streets of our cities. I actually agree with her. Stage a thoughtful, peaceful march or vigil on the following days. Let the crazies make fools of themselves and behave like the monsters they are. Why give Trump the opportunity to parade his false equivalences? The rest of us have better things to do - like taking care of one another and eating cake! Fey put the whole white supremacist anger-thing in its proper place in a few minutes.

Yeh, what if they marched and nobody paid any attention. They are like Trump: need the adulation, need the attention to the make them feel alive; without it they are empty and soulless.

If we avoid the fringe of both sides then we'll be okay. Don't forget those Antifa people showed up in Berkley and Portland and threw molotov cocktails and broke windows. We don't want to be associated with that either. They too seem to show up itching for a confrontation, lets all be better than the alt right AND the alt left.

Military leaders have hastened to denounce racism amid the furor over President Donald Trump’s defense of white supremacists who violently rallied last week around a statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee in Charlottesville, Virginia.

But they are also presiding over their own controversial symbols of the Confederacy — including 10 Army bases named for generals who commanded armies of the slave-holding South during the Civil War, such as Fort Bragg in North Carolina, Fort Hood in Texas and Fort Rucker in Alabama.

On Friday, a group of mostly African-American Democrats in the House proposed legislation that would require the defense secretary to rename any military property “that is currently named after any individual who took up arms against the United States during the American Civil War or any individual or entity that supported such efforts." They argued that the names undermine the military's commitment to American values of “freedom, equality, and democratic governance."

Steve Bannon Takes His Street Fight Outside

Trump didn’t personally fire his volatile chief strategist—but he might suffer the consequences.

“From a perch on the outside, Bannon reasoned, he could launch attacks on GOP leaders, stir up primary challenges, and rile conservative supporters — ‘going medieval,’ he has said — much as Breitbart did against former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor. Bannon can also pressure the White House to allowing a government shutdown if Trump doesn’t get what he wants in a funding bill.”

Not content, it seems, to simply undermine what the United States stands for, Bannon is also going to make sure the Republican Party is in disarray. “Such a barrage, should it materialize, would further exacerbate tensions that are deeply dividing Republicans during the Trump era.”

Conservatives love drama and see themselves cast as the hero of a Western meets Armageddon, so prepare yourselves for “Bannon ‘da barbarian.”

Other dramatic comments from “friends” of Bannon today included, “Steve is now unchained,” “Winter is here” and “#WAR”. So that’s fun.

Apparently up until now, including the white supremacy and nastiness to women, has been “Bannon ‘da Civilized”.

    Who knew.

This was the President’s Chief Strategist, so while these threats seem adolescent and silly, they are also indicative of the level at which our President most comfortably operates.

Medieval is the last thing Bannon should be talking about.

    2. I remember that Stone Mountain one. It was completed the year I graduated high school.

Perhaps all of the confederate statues should be gathered together and put at Stone Mountain to make it a living history park. Teaching the context and that the south LOST THE WAR. A concept that seems to be difficult for so many to grasp.

The state has considered topping the dome with a large freedom bell for Martin Luther King Jr's speech.

"On October 11, 2015, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported the park is considering a proposal of a permanent "Freedom Bell" honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. and the line "Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia" as part of King's "I Have A Dream" speech of 1963.[20] The proposed monument is inspired by a bell-ringing ceremony held in 2013 honoring the 50th anniversary of King's speech."

Seems to me the best "context" for the removed statues would be to stock them all at Stone Mountain with a carved frieze that can't be removed without a vote of the Georgia legislature, which isn't going to happen.

So line them all up for a one stop history lesson. But you better get the history right.

The south LOST 150 years ago. Get over it already.

The Week When 'President' Trump Resigned

... By those measures, it’s indisputable that his presidency ended in the lobby of Trump Tower on Tuesday afternoon, when he chose — yes, chose — to litigate rather than lead, to attend to his wounded pride instead of his wounded nation and to debate the supposed fine points of white supremacy.

He abdicated his responsibilities so thoroughly and recklessly that it amounted to a letter of resignation. Then he whored for his Virginia winery on the way out the door.

Trump knew full well what he should have done, because he’d done it — grudgingly and badly — only a day earlier. But it left him feeling countermanded, corrected, submissive and weak, and those emotions just won’t do for an ego as needy and skin as thin as his. So he put id before country and lashed out, in a manner so patently wrong and transcendently ruinous that TV news shows had to go begging for Republican lawmakers to defend or even try to explain what he’d said.

Schmidt went on to accuse the GOP of entering in an unholy alliance with what he termed the “nationalist Trump party.” And Schmidt says it’s an alliance from which the party must promptly break away.

“There was a lot of hoodwinks and dog whistles during this disgusting campaign in 2016 that have now given way to foghorns and loud speakers,” Schmidt said. “What we saw this weekend with this racist rejoicing with the president’s false moral equivalency is this: He’s fused the white nationalist movement as a credible force in American politics with neo-Nazis and Ku Klux Klan. And the Republican Party cannot exist in coalition with these groups.”

I am glad he is channeling his energy into Trump now. He has been articulate and sane. He fears this wave of lunatics are going to take over the Republican party. I hope it is not too late. But you see very little of the Republicans that aren't cowering.

    1. You have to order cakes several days in advance.

But you can make one in just a few hours. Sheet cakes are easy and fast. Once they are cool (the hardest part is the wait) you ice them, put on a few sprinkles and you're done. Even if he resigns at 5pm you can have cake by the time the prime time shows come on. Well, before Colbert.

If the timing is right, we could all be eating cake during Weekend Update on Thursday Night.
