GOP finally recognizes that health care bill is dead.

Courtesy of NBC News:

Short on votes and time, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is moving on from health care for now.

Republican senators decided during their weekly conference lunch to not take a vote on a measure that was sure to go down in defeat with three senators explicitly against it and others wavering.

“The decision was a joint one between Lindsey and Bill and the other two sponsors and also the leader that if the votes are not there, not to have the vote, but not to give up,” said Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., after leaving the lunch referring to the latest health care bill’s co-sponsors, Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Bill Cassidy, R-La.

With no Democrats supporting the repeal of Obamacare, Senate Republicans could only lose the support of two of its 52-member caucus and still pass the bill. On Monday evening, Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, became the third GOP senator to publicly oppose the measure, delivering a fatal blow to what was already a last-ditch effort. Sens. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and John McCain, R-Ariz., had previously said that they were against the measure as well.

The Graham-Cassidy legislation was the latest version of a series of efforts to partially repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, but none were able to find the 50 votes it needed for passage.

You know it just breaks the GOP's heart that they have failed once again to take healthcare away from millions of their fellow Americans.

Maybe they will get lucky on their way home from work today and run over a squirrel.

You know just so the day is not a total loss for them.

It boggles the mind that each time the bills to repeal the ACA failed, with each of them receiving less public support than the one before, Republicans went back to the table to make the next one even MORE cruel.

"We're not hurting and killing enough people with this bill! What can we change in the next one to hurt and kill even MORE people???"

Graham told reporters that the GOP conference will return to Graham-Cassidy “with a process that gives more attention and time,” directly addressing concerns from Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and others about the rushed process. Other GOP senators seemed optimistic that they could seal the deal on a seven-year-long campaign promise.

“The decision was a joint one between Lindsey and Bill and the other two sponsors and also the leader that if the votes are not there, not to have the vote, but not to give up,” said Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS). “We're going to try to do this in some form in this session of Congress.”

With O’Care Repeal Dead Again, GOPers Cautiously Open To Bipartisan Talks

After Senate Republicans officially gave up on the Graham-Cassidy Obamacare repeal bill Tuesday afternoon, some Republican senators and members of leadership suddenly warmed to reopening bipartisan talks on a bill to stabilize the Affordable Care Act markets.

The talks led by Sens. Lamar Alexander (R-TN, pictured above) and Patty Murray (D-WA), the leaders of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, were abruptly abandoned a week ago when Republican leaders decided to push the Graham-Cassidy bill through the Senate. Now that another week’s worth of desperate attempts to whip votes for an Obamacare repeal bill have failed, some Republicans pointed to Alexander as the next step on health care.

Sen. John Thune (R-SD), the No. 3 Republican in the Senate, told reporters that Alexander and Murray should continue their stabilization work.

“There are going to be some things that in the near-term may have to be done to stabilize markets, and that kind of thing can be done in a bipartisan way,” Thune said.

He noted that Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Bill Cassidy (R-LA) would continue to work on gaining support for their bill, but could not offer an exact timeline.

Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) also encouraged Alexander to continue with bipartisan talks, but seemed pessimistic about the outcome.

“Sen. Alexander’s going to continue with his meetings with Sen. Murray, so they are going to continue on the bipartisan discussions,” he told reporters.

“I want much more flexibility to the states than any Democrat has ever been willing to offer,” Barrasso said when asked if he supports those stabilization talks, referring to cost-sharing reduction payments to insurers. “And if we can’t get the flexibility to the states, so that people can buy in their own home state what works for them personally, then I’m not supportive of a direct continuation of those payments.”

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), one of the co-sponsors of the Graham-Cassidy bill, said that the failure of the repeal bill would “give Democrats an opportunity to really step up to the plate” to work with Republicans on bipartisan legislation.

Two of the three senators who publicly opposed the bill, Susan Collins (R-ME) and John McCain (R-AZ), also called for bipartisan talks to resume....

Another Republican Flees The Trump Dumpster Fire As Sen. Bob Corker Won’t Seek Reelection

Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) has announced that he will not be seeking re-election in 2018.

...At one time, Corker was considered for a top position in the Trump administration, but over the summer, the Senator questioned Trump’s behavior and mental fitness at a town hall.

Corker’s retirement has thrown Republicans for a loop. Both Mitch McConnell and Trump were urging him to run for reelection. It is difficult to imagine a Democrat winning in Tennessee, but without the powerful incumbent, the GOP will be left trying to hold onto an open Senate seat that they assumed was safely locked up.

Democrats And The American People Win Big As GOP Cancels Graham-Cassidy Vote

...Obamacare has survived another attempt to kill it, but Senate Republicans are already angling to attach health care reconciliation language to the 2018 budget. The reason why Republicans are pushing so hard to get Obamacare repeal passed this year is that they don’t want to touch it with a one hundred foot pole during the 2018 midterm election.

The fight is not over. Republicans will be back to try this again, so those who care about healthcare must stay vigilant and ready.

GOP already eyeing next chance to revive Obamacare repeal

Senate Republicans are discussing whether to use their next budget reconciliation measure to target the health law.

The supposedly hard deadline at the end of the month to repeal Obamacare might not be so hard after all.

With their latest attempt to dismantle the health law on track to fail this week, GOP senators are already raising the prospect of going after it again with the same powerful tools that currently let them pass legislation with just 50 votes.

There is nothing to suggest Obamacare repeal would get any easier in the coming months and doing so may significantly hobble the Republican majority’s other chief legislative priority: tax reform. But facing a floundering repeal push, wrath from the base and a frustrated President Donald Trump, Republicans may have no other choice but to keep pushing to uproot the law.

Another Charlottesville is descending on North Carolina

Adding to those similarities, organizers are urging attendees to bring “torches, guns, armor, gear and flags,” which sounds eerily familiar to the tactics seen during Unite the Right. This time, though, it’s not Confederate monuments the marchers will be circling: Marshall Park is home to a statue of Martin Luther King Jr. and a Holocaust memorial.

    Undercover With the Alt-Right

...Mr. Hermansson and Mr. Jorjani met at an Irish pub near the Empire State Building, where the baby-faced Mr. Jorjani imagined a near future in which, thanks to liberal complacency over the migration crisis, Europe re-embraces fascism: “We will have a Europe, in 2050, where the bank notes have Adolf Hitler, Napoleon Bonaparte, Alexander the Great. And Hitler will be seen like that: like Napoleon, like Alexander, not like some weird monster who is unique in his own category — no, he is just going to be seen as a great European leader.”

More shockingly, Mr. Jorjani bragged about his contacts in the American government. “We had connections in the Trump administration — we were going to do things!” he said at one point. “I had contacts with the Trump administration,” he said at another.

“Our original vision was the alt-right would become like a policy group for the Trump administration,” he explained, and the administration figure “who was the interface was Steve Bannon.”
