According to Facebook as many as ten million people saw those Russia linked ads.

Courtesy of Time Magazine:

Facebook said that the 3,000 Russia-linked advertisements it turned over to congressional investigators on Monday were seen on the social network by an estimated 10 million people in the United States.

The social media company said 44% of the ads were seen before the 2016 presidential election, and 56% of the ads were seen after the election.

Facebook turned over the ads this week in the midst of public scrutiny over its role in spreading "fake news" stories that critics say might have influenced the outcome of the election. Russia created fake accounts on Facebook and bought ads with the goal of spreading false stories. And last month, Facebook said nearly 500 accounts that originated in Russia purchased $100,000 worth of Facebook ads during the 2016 election.

Well that's disturbing.

And what is more disturbing is that Facebook just handed them the tools to pull it off.

Courtesy of WaPo:

Russian operatives set up an array of misleading Web sites and social media pages to identify American voters susceptible to propaganda, then used a powerful Facebook tool to repeatedly send them messages designed to influence their political behavior, say people familiar with the investigation into foreign meddling in the U.S. election.

The tactic resembles what American businesses and political campaigns have been doing in recent years to deliver messages to potentially interested people online. The Russians exploited this system by creating English-language sites and Facebook pages that closely mimicked those created by U.S. political activists.

The Web sites and Facebook pages displayed ads or other messages focused on such hot-button issues as illegal immigration, African American political activism and the rising prominence of Muslims in the United States. The Russian operatives then used a Facebook “retargeting” tool, called Custom Audiences, to send specific ads and messages to voters who had visited those sites, say people familiar with the investigation who spoke on the condition of anonymity to share details from an ongoing investigation.

We can blame Facebook for their part in this, that is fair, but we also have to recognize that none of this would have been possible if the American people had not proven to be so susceptible to manipulation.

Now I know from experience that a number of you will say that this is the reason you don't go on Facebook, or use other types of social media, but that misses the point of all this.

It does not solve one single problem that you yourself don't use Facebook, because you are only one person and in the grand scheme of things your choice matters not at all.

The real problem is that multiple millions of people DO use Facebook, and THEY either need to be better educated or Facebook needs to protect them from manipulation.

That second one will simply never happen, because our entire capitalist way of life depends on the ability to manipulate people into buying certain products, adopting new technologies, and trying to live a lifestyle that advertisers convince them is more desirable than the one they are already living.

So that means we are left attempting to educate those who are likely targets of the kind of manipulation that puts people like Donald Trump and Sarah Palin into office.

And that my friends does NOT mean abandoning Facebook. It means sharing factual, informative articles on all social media platforms in an attempt to offset the fake news that is already much too readily available.

Keep in mind that if you are not part of the solution, then you remain part of the problem.

I realize social media is here to stay. Unfortunately, it has opened my eyes to the racist batshit crazy ideas some of my family and friends have. I’ve discovered I don’t much like some family members, and that saddens me.

Pro-Life Hypocrite Rep. Tim Murphy Caught Urging His Mistress To Get An Abortion

Rep. Tim Murphy (R-PA) is the latest Republican member of Congress to get caught living a lie behind their "pro-life" stance.

A text message sent in January to U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy by a woman with whom he had an extra-marital relationship took him to task for an anti-abortion statement posted on Facebook from his office's public account.

"And you have zero issue posting your pro-life stance all over the place when you had no issue asking me to abort our unborn child just last week when we thought that was one of the options," Shannon Edwards, a forensic psychologist in Pittsburgh with whom the congressman admitted last month to having a relationship, wrote to Mr. Murphy on Jan. 25, in the midst of an unfounded pregnancy scare.

A text from Mr. Murphy’s cell phone number that same day in response says, "I get what you say about my March for life messages. I've never written them. Staff does them. I read them and winced. I told staff don't write any more. I will."

NRA spokesperson dismisses Las Vegas massacre by claiming ‘feet’ are just as deadly as guns

NRA spokesperson and radio host Dana Loesch thinks that if guns are banned then fists and feet are probably next because people can punch and kick to harm others.

    Nasty shit is afoot.

Pence’s chief of staff floats ‘purge’ of anti-Trump Republicans to wealthy donors

Nick Ayers urges donors to ‘form a coalition’ to take on GOP leaders and members who don’t back the president.

Vice President Mike Pence’s chief of staff railed against congressional leaders in closed-door remarks to wealthy donors and called for a “purge” if GOP lawmakers don’t quickly rally behind President Donald Trump’s agenda.

In remarks at a Republican National Committee event at the St. Regis Hotel in Washington on Tuesday morning, Nick Ayers also warned that Republicans are “on track to get shellacked” in next year’s midterm elections if GOP lawmakers don’t pass Trump’s legislative priorities.

But Ayers reserved his harshest criticism for congressional leaders and members who have not offered full-throated support for the president.

“Just imagine the possibilities of what can happen if our entire party unifies behind him? If — and this sounds crass — we can purge the handful of people who continue to work to defeat him,” Ayers said, according to an audio recording of the remarks obtained by POLITICO.

One attendee later asked how the donors could “rally the congressional delegation that does support the president and vice president, and rally them and push them to change the current leadership in both the Senate and the House.”

“I’m not speaking on behalf of the president or vice president when I say this,” Ayers responded. “But if I were you, I would not only stop donating, I would form a coalition of all the other major donors, and just say two things. We’re definitely not giving to you, number one. And number two, if you don’t have this done by Dec. 31, we’re going out, we’re recruiting opponents, we’re maxing out to their campaigns, and we’re funding super PACs to defeat all of you.”

The gun lobby: See how much your representative gets

$5,900,000 given to Republicans in 2016 election cycle

$106,000 given to Democrats in 2016 election cycle

The Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan think tank that tracks money in politics, found that in 2016 more than half of the members of the House of Representatives — or 232 of the 435 — received money from gun rights groups like the National Rifle Association and Gun Owners of America. That money went disproportionately to Republicans. Only nine Democrats received campaign contributions from these groups.

Obama’s disaster chief unloads on Trump for dismissing Puetro Rico’s suffering as not ‘a real catastrophe’

Jeremy Konyndyk, who formerly served as Disaster Assistance Chief in the Obama administration, broke his own “don’t tweet angry” rule to take on President Donald Trump’s “fatal” response to the disaster in Puerto Rico.

On the ground in San Juan Tuesday, Trump downplayed the island’s devastation by comparing it to Hurricane Katrina.

“Every death is a horror, but if you look at a real catastrophe like Katrina and you look at the tremendous hundreds and hundreds of people that died and what happened here with a storm that was just totally overbearing,” Trump said. “No one has ever seen anything like that. What is your death count?”

The current death count is 16, but as Konyndyk pointed out, that total is almost definitely inaccurate.

“We have no reliable idea of the actual death toll,” he tweeted, linking to a Vox article about the death toll’s three-day lack of reporting. “Reporting of fatalities has broken down.”

“This is such a deeply wrong, deeply inappropriate, deeply disrespectful thing to say,” he wrote. “Toll of 16 reflects mostly those killed in the storm or immediate aftermath; number likely to rise are info links are restored.”

“Operative question here is how many have died during the ensuring response, when they *could have been saved.* We don’t yet know,” he continued. “But the bigger point – EVERY fatal catastrophe is a ‘real catastrophe.’”

Senator who took over $852,000 from NRA: People in mass shootings should just "get small"

South Dakota Sen. John Thune, like so many of his fellow Republicans, is not interested in talking about real solutions to gun violence, even after the latest horrific mass shooting in Las Vegas.

Instead of being willing to talk about gun safety, his advice to future victims is to “take steps in their own lives to take precautions” and “get small.”

Thune also happens to be one of the biggest beneficiaries of National Rifle Association (NRA) donations, hauling in at least $852,00 to finance his political campaigns over the years.

Before his re-election in 2016, Thune pulled in $5,000 from the NRA.

Thune told MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson that “all of us want to do everything we can” to prevent mass shootings like the one in Las Vegas, but because America is an open society, “it’s going to be hard to prevent anything.”

“I think people are going to have to take steps in their own lives to take precautions,” he continued, “to protect themselves. And in situations like that, you know, try to stay safe. As somebody said — get small.”

In exchange for those donations, Thune has received a rating of “A” from the NRA, voting on its behalf multiple times in Congress.

Thune opposed the background check bill that came up for a vote in the Senate after the Sandy Hook School massacre, joining a group of 41 Republicans who voted against the legislation. Only four Republicans supported it — despite more than 90 percent of American voters supporting it.

Thune voted against background checks again in legislation that came up last year, while also voting against a bill that would have allowed the Department of Justice to ban gun sales to suspected terrorists.

I respectfully disagree. I will not use FB. They had a credit card number and I cancelled it as soon as I found out. I do not post, or read posts there. The only way to hurt them is to boycott them. They won;t keep people safe. They only want their money. Give it up people. My 87 year old mom is on there and she's always writing to me about a sibling or a niece who said..."whatever stupid thing it is that day." I don't care. I lost a niece and a sister to FB lies, and that's enough.

Looks like the dots connected to the rigger in Michigan. Remember when Romney came out and gave that heartfelt speech warning the world how bad Donald john drumpf is? Yeah and he looked like he saw the ghost of morony? Well I guess the rigging in Michigan is one example of facesnot riggers and the trail of evidence.
