Texas teen sues after being expelled for refusing to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.

Courtesy of ABC News:

A lawsuit says a Houston student's Constitutional rights were violated when she was expelled for not standing for the Pledge of Allegiance.

Randall Kallinen, an attorney for 17-year-old India Landry's family, said the civil lawsuit was filed Saturday against the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District and a high school principal.

The lawsuit says Landry, who'd been sitting for the pledge in class, was expelled Monday after doing that in the principal's office. The lawsuit says Landry returned to school Friday after the principal reversed course, saying Landry could sit.

Landry, who is black, told KHOU she doesn't think "the flag is what it says it's for, for liberty and justice and all that."

Denying a child an education because they are exercising their 1st Amendment rights?

Oh Texas, you never disappoint.

What's next Trump? Will you go after students who exercises their rights not to stand?

I went through the same "shaming" attempts when I refused to read the daily biblical verse in a public school in Charleston, SC, 1963. Not a happy time...

  4. I hope the principal has a very nice house and car that this girl can enjoy, once her lawyers take him to the cleaners.

It is the new black thing... everyone of all shades and colors are provided equal opportunities, public education, assistance... but if you are black and purposely make a scene to bring attention... sue!

Hope she loses the case, and has to pay her own attorney fees as she has suffered no real losses. Welcome to the modern world where everyone is equal. Maybe she will actually learn something.

7:28, she has suffered no real losses? She is being denied an education by being expelled from school. Time lost means not being there to learn the things on the tests which means low or failing grades which take time to make up. I am sure there is a emotional and stress component from being ostracized and now a national news story and by comments like yours. She had every right to sit just as others have the right to stand. That is what the song is glorifying, the land of the free.

@7:28 - your blind ignorance shows just as does the alt-right, white supremacist who babbles something as stupid as saying everyone is equal. Where the hell your stupidity comes from is a mystery.
All one has to do is pay attention to what goes on in the real world and has gone on since the beginning of time. Blacks are not treated equally in the real world, not in any part of it. The best compliment I ever got was 30 years ago when one of my employees of color told me, "The best thing about you is that you are color blind." How sad that I stood out because I treated everyone fairly.

8:54, she was un-expelled the next day. It is doubtful her education has been ruined. 9:07- the only ones that don't want to believe in equality are the SJW snowflakes like yourself that always have to continually create racial discord where there is none. You don't seem to understand that equal and fair means just that, no special treatment just because of ones skin.

    6. 8:54 You neglected to mention that that expulsion will not be on her permanent student record.

9:36 She was allowed to return. That doesn't mean she was "un-expelled."

When you're pardoned they let you out of prison, but records still show you're a criminal that has served time.

mlaiuppa, there will be no expulsion on her record. Momma and daughter are just looking for a payday... it is the soup du jour so to speak, these days of the SJW actors.

When I was in elementary school in the late 1960's, there were two kids whose families were Jehovah's Witnesses.

These two were NEVER made to either say the Pledge of Allegiance nor to stand during the Anthem. To do so would have been considered a violation of their freedom of religion.

But then again, this was New York.

This is so stupid. I'm old and grew up in the rural South, and back then we had kids in almost every class who didn't say the Pledge for religious or cultural reasons. No one made a fuss, and we let them be who they were.
When did my country become full of intolerant bullshitters? Shame on Texas schools.

  7. For 36 years I've allowed children to sit during any sort of pledge, when there has been one. Our district has stated from the start that students with objections to the pledge, mostly Jehovah's Witnesses, didn't have to stand. Some chose to stand but be silent, some chose to sit. At some schools there is no pledge, they play an orchestral version of a patriotic song, at some it is only when school opens and the flag is raised and the campus is mostly empty.

This latest fervor borders on McCarthyism. It's that orange turd in the oval office that is now forcing everyone to prove they are "loyal". Pretty soon he will say that disrespecting the flag disrespects HIM.

I'm waiting for them to start arresting people for not pledging allegiance.

What is this country coming to?

if the child was white..... trump has made it easy to treat black people like shit, in a lot of situations. we are meant to treat all children alike, but the days of trump in goverment, hey, we can do what we want to black kids. look trump is doing his best to turn us into a dictatorship. letting this sort of thing happen is the first step. he tried to get our voting records-but the states wouldn't hand them over. little things like this help because people play less attetion to it.

Even as a child in the 60s in rural Idaho,we had a choice to sit or stand. The Beast wants to control our very existence.
