The Republicans are trying it yet again!

Courtesy of WaPo:

Senate Republican leaders moved Tuesday to include a repeal of the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate in their tax bill, a major change of strategy as they try to accomplish two of their top domestic priorities in a single piece of legislation.

They also announced that the individual tax cuts in the plan would be made temporary, expiring at the end of 2025 to comply with Senate rules limiting the impact of legislation on the long-term deficit. A corporate tax cut, reducing the rate from 35 to 20 percent, would be left permanent.

Repealing the mandate, which compels most Americans to buy health insurance or pay a fine, would free up more than $300 billion in government funding over the next decade that Republicans could use to finance their proposed tax cuts, but it would result in 13 million fewer people having health insurance, according to projections from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

The CBO has also projected that repealing the individual mandate would drive up insurance premiums for many Americans by roughly 10 percent.

Simply put they are NEVER going to stop doing this until they no longer have the numbers to make the attempt.

And the only way to ensure that, is to start electing Democrats to put a stop to it for good.

And towards that end the Democrats are gathering an army.

Courtesy of The Hill:

House Democrats' campaign arm has named the first round of candidates to its "Red to Blue" program as the party looks to highlight promising Democratic challengers ahead of the 2018 midterms.

All but one of the 11 candidates highlighted by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) are running against GOP incumbents.

Only three in districts that Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton won in 2016, suggesting that they face a tougher path to victory. But Democrats are emboldened by the early signs from these campaigns, as well as the national trends tilting in the party's direction, as they look to seize the House majority in 2018.

Having good candidates is the first step, but then we have to push hard to get out the vote and take power back from these Republican thugs, and not only protect Obamacare, but also finally do the tweaking that it needs to be a more successful program to meet the needs of the American people.

Senate Republicans Admit They’re Repealing Obamacare To Give Corporations A Bigger Tax Cut

Senate Republicans admitted that the real reason why they are trying to repeal the individual mandate in the tax cut bill is that it gives them more money to give a bigger tax cut to corporations.…

Senate Republicans admitted that the real reason why they are trying to repeal the individual mandate in the tax cut bill is that it gives them more money to give a bigger tax cut to corporations.

Politico reported, “But Republicans argue it this way: It actually smooths passage for tax reform by giving them a pot of cash to play with for popular tax breaks. One GOP senator said Republicans might have had to set the corporate rate at higher than 20 percent if not for the savings from the mandate. The move also allows them to avoid killing popular tax breaks — such as the adoption tax credit — like the House initially had to do.”

Republicans aren’t trying to hide it. They are going to attempt to take healthcare away from 13 million Americans by repealing the individual mandate so that they have more money to give to the wealthy and corporations, and maybe keep around some popular tax breaks that they planned on axing because they were scrounging for cash to give to those who need it the least.

The Trump administration is reversing an Obama administration ban on bringing to the United States the heads of elephants killed in two African countries.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) said it has determined that hunting African elephants in Zimbabwe and Zambia “will enhance the survival of the species in the wild,” which is the standard by which officials judge whether to allow imports of parts - known as trophies - of the animals.

“Legal, well-regulated sport hunting as part of a sound management program can benefit the conservation of certain species by providing incentives to local communities to conserve the species and by putting much-needed revenue back into conservation,” an FWS spokesman said in a statement late Wednesday, after hunting group Safari Club International announced the policy.

Imports will be allowed for elephants killed between Jan. 21, 2016 and the end of 2018.

The decision, cheered by some hunting and gun rights groups, is a reversal of the policy under the Obama administration. The United States and international authorities say the African elephant is a threatened species, and the Obama administration argued that allowing trophy imports would harm the animals by encouraging killing them.

  12. This will drive premiums up 20% or more. And don't forget everyone's taxes are going to go up. Just the rich? Well, for a postgraduate student making $30,000 a year their taxes will go up 400%. That's right. Because the tuition they get in exchange for teaching will now be taxed as income at the highest rate. Half of the actual income they make ($30,000) will go towards paying taxes on income they never get. Now who will be able to live on $15,000 a year? This will simply drive people away from post-graduate studies. There goes our future innovation and economic growth. Of course, the Republicans have never valued education so they're just fine with that. And it will take a decade or more for the damage to really be exposed. Just like it took so long to show the damage Prop 13 and it's clones around the country would do to public education.

13 million will lose their healthcare and 13 million are going to see their taxes go UP. All to appease and reward the greediest 1% of Americans.

How could so many people be so stupid.

Twenty-first century Republicans do not want Americans to have health care (by decimating the ACA, Medicare and Medicaid), education at any level (by disallowing teachers from deducting supply costs, by taxing tuition costs and grants), or the opportunity to live in safe communities (by eliminating deductions for state and local taxes). The bill is an atrocity, both at the House and Senate levels. But people will not pay attention because, of course, the most draconian parts will not take effect for several years - when Democrats will likely be in power.

"The Trump administration will reverse an Obama-era ban on the importation of elephant trophies from Zimbabwe and Zambia after determining that sport hunting in those countries will help conserve the species, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service confirmed Wednesday.

The decision was made public not by the federal agency but via a celebratory news release early Tuesday from Safari Club International, a trophy hunting advocacy group that, along with the National Rifle Association, sued to block the 2014 ban. "

I guess Uday and Qusay want to go trophy hunting again.

    https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/senate-confirms-david-zatezalo-mine-safety_us_5a0ca41ce4b0c0b2f2f771cb?section=us_politics

"The Republican-controlled Senate confirmed President Donald Trump’s pick to run the Mine Safety and Health Administration on Wednesday, even though the nominee once ran a coal company that repeatedly violated mine safety laws.

Senators voted 52-46 along party lines to make David Zatezalo the assistant secretary for mine safety and health, a top position at the Labor Department. Zatezalo will be in charge of enforcing the same regulations that were broken by Rhino Resources, the company where he served as chief executive.

No Republicans voted against his confirmation.

Zatezalo fits a long-running pattern with the Trump administration, of nominees being chosen to run agencies that they previously stood across from."

Now I heard on NPR today that Elizabeth Warrens Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is going to be needing a new head when Richard Cordray steps down, which he is going to do. IF they don't get rid of it outright, which many Republicans want to do, who do you think Trump is going to put in charge of it? That's right. Someone that would be out to undermine it, just like all of his other nominees. Now who could it be? Someone in predatory student loan lending? Well, whoever it is, they might just as well get rid of it as it will no longer be the effective organization that Elizabeth Warren set up.

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-11-15/cfpb-s-cordray-to-step-down-allowing-trump-to-remake-watchdog

"Richard Cordray will step down as the head of a controversial consumer watchdog at the end of the month amid growing speculation that he will run for governor of Ohio as a Democrat.

The decision could clear the way for President Donald Trump to install his own director atop the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a regulator set up after the 2008 financial crisis to police mortgages, credit cards and other products. Cordray’s departure gives Republican lawmakers a chance to push a deregulatory agenda at an agency that they say has too much power and has burdened lenders with unnecessary red tape."

"A shadow has hung over Cordray at CFPB ever since a federal appeals court in Washington ruled that the agency’s structure was unconstitutional. The October 2016 ruling said the autonomy granted to the director -- who could only be fired by the president for cause -- was a departure from how agencies are typically set up.

At CFPB’s request, the court is reconsidering its decision. While the judges deciding the case could disband the bureau, the Trump administration would prefer that it just give the president power to fire the director at any time for any reason. The banking industry says it wants the agency reformed so that a bipartisan commission votes on regulations and rules, instead of a single director controlling policy."

    Yeah, we are all fucked.
