Veteran reporter Charlie Rose comes to the end of his career, as eight women accuse him of making unwanted sexual advances.

Courtesy of WaPo:

Eight women have told The Washington Post that longtime television host Charlie Rose made unwanted sexual advances toward them, including lewd phone calls, walking around naked in their presence, or groping their breasts, buttocks or genital areas.

The women were employees or aspired to work for Rose at the “Charlie Rose” show from the late 1990s to as recently as 2011. They ranged in age from 21 to 37 at the time of the alleged encounters. Rose, 75, whose show airs on PBS and Bloomberg TV, also co-hosts “CBS This Morning” and is a contributing correspondent for “60 Minutes.”

There are striking commonalities in the accounts of the women, each of whom described their interactions with Rose in multiple interviews with The Post. For all of the women, reporters interviewed friends, colleagues or family members who said the women had confided in them about aspects of the incidents. Three of the eight spoke on the record.

Unlike those allegations against AL Franken, these seem far more egregious and therefore appropriate that Rose steps down.

To his credit Rose did not deny the allegations, and instead took some responsibility for his actions:

“In my 45 years in journalism, I have prided myself on being an advocate for the careers of the women with whom I have worked,” Rose said in a statement provided to The Post. “Nevertheless, in the past few days, claims have been made about my behavior toward some former female colleagues.

“It is essential that these women know I hear them and that I deeply apologize for my inappropriate behavior. I am greatly embarrassed. I have behaved insensitively at times, and I accept responsibility for that, though I do not believe that all of these allegations are accurate. I always felt that I was pursuing shared feelings, even though I now realize I was mistaken.

“I have learned a great deal as a result of these events, and I hope others will too. All of us, including me, are coming to a newer and deeper recognition of the pain caused by conduct in the past, and have come to a profound new respect for women and their lives.”

I predicted before that we would see respected members of the political, entertainment, and media world accused of inappropriate sexual conduct.  And so we are.

Charlie Rose is also joined by reporter Glenn Thrush of the New York Times:

The New York Times said on Monday that it was suspending Glenn Thrush, one of its most prominent reporters, after he was accused of inappropriate sexual behavior.

The move came after the website Vox published a report containing allegations from four female journalists that Mr. Thrush, who was hired by The Times in January to cover the Trump administration, had acted inappropriately toward them. Mr. Thrush was a star reporter at Politico before joining The Times.

The women cited in the Vox article described Mr. Thrush’s behavior as including unwanted kissing and touching. Three of the women were not identified by name. The fourth, Laura McGann, wrote the article, which was presented in the first person.

“The behavior attributed to Glenn in this Vox story is very concerning and not in keeping with the standards and values of The New York Times,” The Times said in a statement on Monday. “We intend to fully investigate and while we do, Glenn will be suspended.”

It is clear that women are feeling very empowered right now, and overall that is a good thing.

However I certainly hope that the bar for sexual harassment is not being lowered to such a point that literally ANYTHING a man says or does to a woman, that is not specifically requested by that woman, becomes the definition.

If that happens it can undermine the legitimacy of actual sexual assaults and sexual harassment allegations, and allow predators to simply dismiss them all as a kind of mass hysteria.

This is potentially a watershed moment in American history, but if people are not vigilant it can devolve into, dare I say it, a witch hunt.

What about women who beat their husbands because it does happen?

And I am a little scared this is opening the door for liars to bank on 15 minutes.
My thoughts are as follows: every human has flaws. If one is apologetic and promises to seek help and or actually changes their ways, their career should not take a dive permanently.

However in cases like Cosby, and trump, fuck them. Id kind of like to see both men working the fryer at Burger King.

If someone in your home calls cops due to physical abuse, they will immediately assume the man did it, regardless of evidence.

HAppened to my neighbor a few years ago, he had enough, called the police on his wife, and they arrested him, even though she started the fight, and had been abusing him for years

I knew a woman years ago that use to go after her husband physically, verbally and mentally! She was a complete battleax!

He finally got out of the relationship and we all applauded and supported him for doing so.

He kept evidence that was used in his divorce proceedings (had an excellent attorney too!) and ended up getting their kids to raise.

It truly is not ALL women that are being abused (mentally and physically) in marriages and relationships.

Keep your eyes open as to the FACTS!

There is indeed F to M abuse, and that should be addressed. However, that ration is 10>90; men are by far the worse of the abusers. 50 women MONTHLY are killed or injured by their domestic partners/spouses.

Gee "hysteria" originates from the Greek word for uterus'

" by linking them to the uterus, suggests that the disorder can only be found in women.' Historically, hysteria was thought to manifest itself in women with a variety of symptoms, including: anxiety, shortness of breath, fainting, insomnia, irritability, nervousness, as well as SEXually FORWARD behavior'
"Previously held ideas surrounding hysteria, its manifestation, and its treatment in women persisted through to the 18th and 19th centuries. It is also during this time that hysteria starts to be thought of as less of a physical ailment and more of a psychological one"
'femininity is a natural and essential desire for women'
"With the advent of industrialization came the mechanization of massage therapy, the steam powered 'Manipulator’ table massager created in the late 1860s and other devices similar in nature were becoming more available in the mid 19th century.[2] Doctors could now increase their patient load by either investing in a portable vibratory device or having one installed in their office. This new technology also allowed husbands whose wives had been diagnosed with hysteria to partake in the treatments at home. This kind of treatment to induce what is now realized to be an ORGASM in women was not considered a SEXual act as, with the androcentric model for SEXuality, it wasn't considered a true SEXual act unless there was penetration and ejaculation. Other mechanized forms of treatment in the mid 19th century included Hydrotherapy with a pelvic douche massager, where cold water was blasted at a high pressure at a woman's abdomen. These devices were harder to $ELL to doctor’s offices because of the expense and the equipment needed to produce the right amount of water pressure, so spas took up the practice offering it not just as muscle therapy but also for treatment of hysteria"
"Freud furthered this research by claiming that hysteria was not anything physical at all but an emotional, internal affliction that could affect both males and females, which was caused by previous trauma that led to the afflicted being unable to enjoy sex in the normal way." "This would later lead to Freud's development of the Oedipus Complex, which connotes femininity as a failure, or lack of masculinity."
    Though these earlier studies had shown that men were also prone to suffer from hysteria, including Freud himself,[1] over time, the condition was related mainly to issues of femininity as the continued study of hysteria took place only in women." {BY WHITE HORNY MEN}
"9th century definition of femininity has far reaching implications in modern thought as it cements the idea of woman as child bearer, and denotes women who do not conform to the established norms of SEXuality and psychoanalysis, as WRONG or DEFECTIVE.[10] This definition of femininity as motherhood came at a time when women were fighting for more rights and a larger role in society. Hysteria was often used as a political tOOl in the media to impede these women’s rights movements and invalidate their arguments and desire for equal rights."

"Feminist social historians of both genders argue that hysteria is caused by women’s oppressive social roles rather than by their bodies or psyches, and they have sought its sources in cultural myths of femininity and in male domination"

"The term also occurs in the phrase "mass hysteria" to describe mass public near-panic reactions. Hysteria was often associated with events such as the Salem WITCH trials, or SLAVE revolt."

Couldn't agree more. Franken's behavior was frat boy obnoxious but not criminal. If we lose a good, progressive Senator over such accusations, I fear what's to follow. Plus, his accuser is nothing more than a Hannity sycophant.

    4. Franken is smart. He knows exactly what is happening and why. He isn't going to allow this to force him into a resignation. That is why he apologized and called for an investigation. The voters will decide whether he is re-elected or not.

Michigan Rep. John Conyers, a Democrat and the longest-serving member of the House of Representatives, settled a wrongful dismissal complaint in 2015 with a former employee who alleged she was fired because she would not “succumb to his sexual advances.”

Former staff members who allege that Conyers, the ranking Democrat on the powerful House Judiciary Committee, repeatedly made sexual advances to female staff that included requests for sex acts, contacting and transporting other women with whom they believed Conyers was having affairs, caressing their hands sexually, and rubbing their legs and backs in public. Four people involved with the case verified the documents are authentic.

As long as it is a Democrat that can be linked to some kind of sexual problem, that is what matters to the enemies.

I don't see Franken resigning. How long until Franken will run for the Senate again?
'voters will decide whether he is re-elected or not' YES, that is not an immediate matter. I doubt the Republicans care about the Minnesota Senator right now. However he is desparaged is fine, as long as Franken looks bad. If Franken wasn't in the Senate, another Democrat would take his place. I think it is the future re-election that matters.

Franken is laying low right now. That is good for Republicans. They can run with all their propaganda and work on public opinion. Franken can't say or do much. If he does talk, his word is questionable now. People loyal to him will be loyal. Those that don't like him won't care. It's the ones on the fence that have a vote that matter.

Now these men are being held accountable for tacky behavior. Some criminal. It sounds like both rose and franken cases are baloney. Sad situation for Charlie Rose. As erudite and intelligent as he is, you'd think he would realize that women, particularly young women want nothing to do with some old wrinkled up guy in his 70's.

Charlie should have done what all people do if they have the money, and that's seek out an escort for company, or more, if it's consensual, terms are agreed on, and respectful and non violent.

I'm sure that statement is going to trigger someone, but bottom line is that high end escorts make more in a week than most of us do in a month, and it's their choice to do so.

For lack of spending a few thousand dollars, he's ruined his storied and amazing career

This story goes back 30 years +. He's been divorced since 1980 and been known as a "bachelor catch" yet as all he did was try to sexually manipulate his assistants and those he purportedly was mentoring.

This just didn't happen in the last decade since he's been old and wrinkly, much of this happened when he was still an attractive young person with a lot of influence.

In many work environments now, men are never going to compliment anyone on how they look

Men will be not be inviting a woman to work alone on a project, won't stay late to catch up on work or collaboration, and won't ever be dining together, even on a business trip.

The only thing it takes now to ruin your reputation and get fired as a man now is a woman saying he made me feel afraid, or he talked down to me, mansplained, or he groped me or asked me to come to his room.

The only safety men have is to discuss nothing but business and weather at work, and to never be alone with any woman without at least one other person.
