Alabama Election Open Thread. Update!

Courtesy of the New York Times:

The results of a special Senate election in Alabama on Tuesday will carry immense national implications for President Trump and both parties, after a strange and ugly campaign left voters exhausted by the politicking and confused at the polls.

A victory by the Republican candidate, Roy S. Moore, who has been accused of sexual misconduct with teenage girls, would illustrate the enduring limitations of Democrats in the deeply conservative South. A win by his Democratic rival, Doug Jones, to fill the seat left vacant when the president appointed Jeff Sessions as attorney general, would shrink Republicans’ Senate advantage to a single seat, putting their majority in play.

Mr. Trump, who ultimately gave Mr. Moore his full-throated endorsement, tweeted his support on Tuesday morning: “Roy Moore will always vote with us.”

Mr. Jones, who cast his ballot early, will need strong turnout from black, urban and suburban white voters. Mr. Moore, who rode his horse to the polls, will need support from rural white voters.

This of course should be a slam dunk for the Republicans, as Alabama is a deeply red state.

However that was before Trump forever damaged the brand, and before they nominated an accused pedophile to run for the Senate.

Now the outcome of the election is anybody's guess.

But one thing for sure is that a win by a Democrat could indicate a progressive revolution that could sweep through Washington in 2018.

And for that matter even a close race in which Moore barely ekes out a victory could also indicate a progressive revolution that could sweep through Washington in 2018.

Both Jones and Moore already voted of course, though Moore's arrival at the polling station was somewhat more theatrical.
You know it takes more than a tiny pistol and a Brokeback Mountain sexy leather vest to be a real cowboy, and this guy certainly does not ride like a real cowboy.

It appears he is as real of a cowboy as he is a Christian.

For polling results online you can click here.

Update: The Associated Press just called the race for Jones.
This seems a little premature, and I don't think any other news outlet has joined them, but they seem confident.

    2. Moore lost by the write-ins.

      Jones won by 20,715.

There were 22,819 write ins. You bet those were Republicans that couldn't stomach voting for Molester Moore but couldn't bring themselves to vote for a decent Democrat.

      Delete
    3. Anonymous9:05 PM

I thought you told us Moore was going to win by 3-6%

      Delete
    4. Yep. And I spent the entire day believing it until I read here that Jones won. I still have a hard time believing it.

I've looked at the map and there are blue streaks around the larger cities and University towns. One big blue bubble near the top border.

It was the write ins. If they had voted for Moore he would have won, but by such a slim margin it probably would have triggered an automatic recount. As is Jones won by 1.5% so he's in. Until 2020. Now his job is to spend the next two years convincing the people of Alabama to re-elect him.

Meanwhile, Moore supporters are angry at the other senator from Alabama for saying he wrote in a candidate's name rather than vote for Moore. Sounds like he and Jones will be able to cross the aisle and work together for the good of Alabama.

      Delete
    5. Leland3:53 AM

mlaiuppa, trust me on this: THIS IS NOT OVER! Moore will DEMAND a recount and they will find something wrong with the absentee ballots and throw them out. Not only that, but I would be willing to be they will ignore the state's recount law and not make Moore for the recount demand. It is supposed to be that the candidate requesting a recount of votes if the margin is greater than half a per cent is required to pay for it.

Since Moore is a repube, they will ignore that. AND, since the state's Supreme Court invalidated the lower court order to save copies of the votes, they can't really do a proper count - no evidence for a REAL recount. So the only way they will be able to put him in is by canceling the absentees.

That, of course, will probably lead to a federal suit by Jones. That would take a fairly long time and by the time a decision is made, the term of the election will be over and a new election will be due, so Jones won't be seated.

If that happens, watch the number disenfranchised voters go through the roof.

      Delete
    6. If they do they'll have multiple lawsuits from the black voters that were denied the vote because when they go to the polls they were "inactive."

Alabama not only has an ID law, but they closed a lot of DMVs (where you register) in black communities and also closed a lot of polling places. It wouldn't be difficult to prove that voters that would have voted for Jones were denied the right to vote and that blacks have been systematically targeted for disenfranchisement. (Alabama, what else is new?)

Moore still thinks the absentee and military ballots, once counted, will win him the vote. He'd need over 20,000. Even if he got them, the margin would then be less than 5% and an automatic recount would be triggered. If there were provisional ballots, they'd have to be counted and you now they'd go to Jones because who is casting those provisional ballots? The disenfranchised that they're trying to deny the vote to which is....African Americans.

Moore and his supporters are stubborn and won't back down. They're already screaming voter fraud. The sane people are just accepting the outcome and looking forward to 2020 and defeating Jones fair and square. Or as fair as you can get in Alabama.

What the Democrats have to do now is show the African American voters that their votes count, they are listened to and they are not being taken advantage of. There are already feelings of them being ignored except in tight race like this. The Democrats need to get over that mindset and start operating on every vote matters and you better listen to the damned people, not just your big money donors. The Democrats need to be there ALL the time, not just knocking on doors when an election is coming and the vote is going to be tight.

That will have to come from the local as Tom Perez and the leadership don't operate that way and won't be any time soon.

USA Today editorial torches Trump: ‘Not fit to clean the toilets in the Barack Obama Presidential Library’

...“A president who would all but call Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand a whore is not fit to clean the toilets in the Barack Obama Presidential Library or to shine the shoes of George W. Bush,” USA Today explained.

“With his latest tweet, clearly implying that a United States senator would trade sexual favors for campaign cash, President Trump has shown he is not fit for office. Rock bottom is no impediment for a president who can always find room for a new low,” the editorial observed.

“Donald Trump, the man, on the other hand, is uniquely awful. His sickening behavior is corrosive to the enterprise of a shared governance based on common values and the consent of the governed,” explained USA Today. “If recent history is any guide, the unique awfulness of the Trump era in U.S. politics is only going to get worse. Trump’s utter lack of morality, ethics and simple humanity has been underscored during his 11 months in office.”

The newspaper also took issue with so few members of the Senate Democratic Party Caucus demanding President Trump step down.

    3. No. He needs the absentee ballots. The military ones are in there.

They'll have to throw out the provisional ballots from all of the black districts where voters showed up to the polls and were told they were "inactive" even though they just voted in the previous election.

      A little clarification for 9:01

(I am assuming you meant to say recount rather than recall.) They law requires a gap of .05% or less for an AUTOMATIC recount. Further, any candidate can demand a recount - if they are willing to pay for it themselves - regardless of the gap.

Donald Trump’s staff caught posting ridiculously phony tweet on his account

...Here’s what appeared on Trump’s official Twitter account just after 11pm eastern time on Tuesday: “Congratulations to Doug Jones on a hard fought victory. The write-in votes played a very big factor, but a win is a win. The people of Alabama are great, and the Republicans will have another shot at this seat in a very short period of time. It never ends!” Trump didn’t write this. First of all, he never congratulates his opponents under any circumstances. Second, this is not remotely his writing style or phrasing. Third, we all know Trump is fast asleep and passed out by that time of night. So what’s really going on here?

Rather obviously, Trump’s staff wrote this tweet and posted it to his account, in an attempt at making him appear magnanimous.

Democrat Doug Jones has won in Alabama, and it changes EVERYTHING

...Here are just a few new rules for U.S. politics, based on what just happened in Alabama:

    – Donald Trump obviously has no political muscle left. He endorsed Roy Moore repeatedly and emphatically, and even held a campaign rally for him just days before the election, yet it did Moore no good whatsoever. Trump can’t motivate his base to turn out for anyone, as we’ve already seen when his endorsements of Luther Strange and Ed Gillespie failed.

    – Nearly every Senate race is now up for grabs in 2018. States don’t get much redder than Alabama. The Republican should have won this race by twenty points. It’s now clear, however, that the mere presence of toxically unpopular Donald Trump in the White House means that the Democrats can compete in nearly any state in the midterms. There are a number of House districts that are too fundamentally red for the Democrats to win, but there are no statewide races that are off the table.

    – Come to think of it, the Republicans in Congress are probably on the phone with each other right now, discussing the cold hard reality that they’re going to get wiped out in the midterms if they don’t oust Donald Trump first. Then again, if they oust Trump and his base blames them, they may get wiped out anyway.

    – Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced earlier today that no matter who won the Alabama race, he would refuse to seat that person until after the new year. This is a blatant attempt at keeping lame duck Luther Strange in the Senate a bit longer so he can vote “yes” on the final version of the tax scam bill. Doug Jones needs to take immediate legal action to try to force McConnell to seat him immediately.

    – The Democrats are doing just fine. In every 2017 election that they were supposed to win, they’ve won big. In every 2017 election that was supposed to have been a toss-up, they’ve also won. In every 2017 election that was supposed to go to the Republicans, the Democrats have won or come close to winning. So much for the “Democrats in disarray” narrative that we’ve been hearing all year from the media.

    – Donald Trump is about to completely lose what little is left of his mind.

The Biggest Loser in the Alabama Election
It’s not Republicans or Democrats, but Christian witness.

No matter the outcome of today’s special election in Alabama for a coveted US Senate seat, there is already one loser: Christian faith. When it comes to either matters of life and death or personal commitments of the human heart, no one will believe a word we say, perhaps for a generation. Christianity’s integrity is severely tarnished.

9:11 This isn't an isolated incident. When Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinski were in the news, James Dodson of Faith in the Family wrote an open letter blasting Clinton, saying "Character matters. You can't run a family, much less a country, without it." During the campaign, with all these sexual harassment charges against Trump, and the famous "Grab them by the pussy tape", the same James Dodson said "He's just an Alpha male asserting his dominance."

At the same time, Newt Gingrich was condemning Clinton while he (Newt) was having an affair.

The two Palins, Sarah and Bristol, kept promoting sexual abstinence while Bristol was churning out kids. Neither one batted an eyelash, and Bristol really didn't bat an eyelash when she was getting paid by the Candy Foundation. What happened to "thou shall not steal?"

Mike Huckabee, who's a baptist minister, blasted President Obama for letting the girls listen to Beyonce. He didn't have any qualms about getting up on stage and jamming with Ted "dirty pants" Nugent and his songs with lurid lyrics.

Earlier this year, when the hurricane hit Houston, Joel Osteen didn't open his megachurch as an emergency shelter until he was asked. And even then, he passed the plate around. With all his worth, he could have extended a helping hand to his fellow man. Even the mosques in Houston opened their doors to all without being asked. Are the Muslims "more Christian" than Joel Osteen.

Several months ago, this site ran a graphic that really hit home. It was titled "Trump's America". The caption read "And I was hungry, and you said 'recipients of food stamps must be tested for drug use'. I was thirsty, and you said 'his right to oil supersedes your right to water.' I was a stranger, and you said 'deport him. He might be a terrorist'. I was ill, and you said 'take away his health insurance.'

These are the so-called Christians in the GOP."

The evangelicals in Alabama said of Moore, "he's a good Christian."
No, this wasn't an isolated incident, but the culmination of decades of hypocrisy in God's party. But when they started justifying child molestation and pedophilia, we've had enough. We don't know whether you're being sincere, or just putting on an act.

Until the last few decades (when the fake "pro-life" movement began), unbaptized infants born full term to Catholic parents could not be buried in consecrated ground. That's when the Catholic Church turned its back on science and opted to go along with the fundamentalist pseudo-Christians.

  60. I'm sure that brothel story from Moore's friend was a contributing factor in his defeat. It's gratifying to know that some Alabamans couldn't stomach voting for a pedophile.

But Trump was right about one thing. It was the write in votes. Doug Jones won by 20,000 votes. There were 22,000 write ins. Those weren't Democrats or Independents. Those were Republicans that couldn't bring themselves to vote for Moore so they wrote in a Republican. That allowed Jones to win.

He'll been sworn in in January and then have to re-run in 2020.

In other news, look what happened while we were all distracted:

    https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/senate-confirms-leonard-steven-grasz_us_5a2ffeefe4b01598ac486379?section=us_politics

" The Senate voted Tuesday to confirm one of President Donald Trump’s judicial nominees, Leonard Steven Grasz, despite the fact that Grasz earned an embarrassing and unanimous “not qualified” rating from the American Bar Association.

Every Republican present voted to confirm Grasz, 56, to a lifetime seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit. That includes moderates like Sens. Susan Collins (Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), as well as retiring Sens. Jeff Flake (Ariz.) and Bob Corker (Tenn.). Every Democrat opposed him in the 50-48 vote.

It is extremely rare for the Senate to confirm a judge with such an abysmal rating from the national legal organization. The ABA has reviewed more than 1,700 federal judicial nominees since 1989, and only three, including Grasz, have been deemed unanimously unqualified. The other two, both nominees of President George W. Bush, were withdrawn and replaced with other nominees after the ABA’s assessment came in."

I think they have two more "unqualified" nominees to go.

    Life time position.

    Federal court of appeals.

This is BAD. This is decades worth of damage that will linger long after the shitforbrains Trump is dead.

"“In sum, the evaluators and the Committee found that temperament issues, particularly bias and lack of open-mindedness, were problematic,” reads a statement by Pam Bresnahan, the chair of the ABA’s standing committee that reviews nominees. “The evaluators found that the people interviewed believed that the nominee’s bias and the lens through which he viewed his role as a judge colored his ability to judge fairly.”"

"Grasz is one of four Trump judicial nominees to get a “not qualified” ABA rating, unanimous or otherwise. Others include district court nominees Brett Talley, who has never tried a case and didn’t tell the Senate that his wife is chief of staff to White House counsel Don McGahn; Charles Goodwin, who raised questions about his ability to fulfill the demands of a federal judge; and Holly Teeter, who lacks trial court experience.

Grasz is the first of the bunch to get confirmed. "

Make no mistake. They'll confirm them all. Because we're busy being distracted by other Deplorable Asshattery.

    2. Nope. Once they are confirmed that position is theirs for life. Short of committing some sort of major crime, I'm not sure there is any method to remove them.

That's why these appointments are so important.

The horror we feel now is nothing to what will happen if Kennedy retires or Ginsburg dies. Trump will nominate a second Supreme Court Justice. Even worse than Gorsucks, if that is possible.
